Previously enjoyed excellent and generous meals, not on this occasion. Hard, thick pasta with dry crab centre, average lamb dish served after 5 minute delay with reheated, just, potato confit. Small, thin piece of skate. Starter of crispy pork cheek good but otherwise, not worth £100 plus for 2 courses for 2. Hopefully, just an off day.

Not just any Sunday roast dinner, but the roast dinner of the year. Its was a pleasure to enjoy a Roast with my wife who had Lamb cooked to perfection and I enjoyed Top rump equally as good both accompanied by Goose fat potatoes, honey roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, roast carrot and braised cabbage. I could not resist trying the Soufflé for desert with an ice cream which was so light and melted in the mouth. We also tried the warm Brown Butter cakes to take home which melted in the mouth. Prices Lamb £27, Top Rump £24 Veg extras £6 each Desert £14

My husband and I went to the Hare & Hounds for dinner tonight, a sunny Friday night. Due to the weather, the offering was small plates from the BBQ, which we were happy with so we had booked a table outside for 18:15. BBQ in the sun is a nice idea but was poorly executed. We weren't allowed to order for 30 minutes because the orders were being staggered. We were also told that everything we ordered would arrive as soon as it was ready, which was fine by us. 20 minutes after ordering, my drink and our bread hadn't arrived, so I had to chase these up and wait another 10 minutes for them (though my husband's drink arrived promptly). I ordered venison in red wine sauce which was cold, and when I told the person who appeared to be in charge, she asked "was it cold when you got it?" Well yes, I didn't wait for it to go cold then try to send it back. When I received a "new" plate it was quite obvious that the piece I hadn't cut into had been re-cooked and served back to me as it was much more well done than the new slices that were placed strategically on top. We also ordered smoked potatoes which hadn't arrived after 45 minutes, so we gave up and asked for the bill. I asked that the potatoes be taken off as we hadn't been given them, then had to send the bill back to remove the service charge. I usually always pay the service charge or leave a tip, but neither the food nor the service was deserving of it on this occasion. The staff were clearly out of their depth and I witnessed the person in charge being rude to one of the young men waiting tables which was disappointing. It was nice to sit outside in the sun and the bread was delicious but those were the only positives. Lots of people rave about the Hare & Hounds but unfortunately we don't fancy returning.

Food was pretty good and nice wine too. Service was very minimal, kind of just left us to it which isn’t ideal. We were put it a a side room which had 0 ambience. Very good meal but the price and automatically adding a service charge seems unjust.

Friendly service with exceptional ingredients. Had a lovely lunch today. The courgette and aubergine dumplings were outstanding as were the sardines in langoustine sauce. I had the fish in a laverbread and mussel sauce. The fish was so fresh and perfectly cooked. I love that everything is cooked to order with many locally sauced ingredients. The soufflés here are legendary! Will be back!

We did not eat a meal, so no comments on Food, other than for the crisps. On the positive : my Wye Valley HPA was the best tasting beer that I have experienced in years - a really good session ale. However the prices were very high! The Merlyn, Bailleys Irish Cream substitute thst we received was a very small shot and £4 for one 35gm (~1-1/4 oz) packet of flavoured potato crisps. That's about £114/kg!!!!! I have bought less expensive caviar.

Looking forward to revisiting the Hare & Hounds but disappointed. Food not of quality. Starter, crab dish contained potatoes that were undercooked and dominated by samphire and mussels rather than crab. Mackerel main course selected by a fellow diner contained mussels not indicated on menu. She does not eat mussels. The dish was cold and underwhelming. Sat in an upstairs dining room with access up a narrow steep set of stairs. The service was excellent in view of challenges faced by waiting staff in bringing food from the downstairs kitchen. Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy. Was it too busy for the diners to be offered the food experience we have previously enjoyed at the H & H ?

Perfect way to finish off a mini break away by having Sunday lunch at this gem of a restaurant. The menu had plenty to suit all appetites and palates. My daughter polished off ALL her roast beef dinner which is unusual as there is often at least one element not to her liking - she described the pink beef as “perfection” and the Yorkshire pudding was a whopper. I had a very generously sized lamb dinner with dauphinois potato and lamb croquette - absolutely delicious and they kindly packaged up my leftovers for me to enjoy later (and I can confirm it was just as lovely then). We were both too full for dessert in the restaurant. but they kindly organised some welsh cakes for me to take home - these were a real treat after the drive home and were just like how my nana made them. Heaven in a few bites. Will definitely return as I can’t wait to try rest of the menu. Also it all comes accompanied by a really efficient yet friendly serving team (who kindly accommodated us an hour earlier than our reservation). Thanks all

Nice a cosy place and was a lovely ambiance in the main dining room, unfortunately and through nobody's fault, it was too busy in there so we went into the adjoining room. We were the only ones in there to start but after a while others came and it made the room much more appealing. Nice drinks and the white wine that we had was lovely. The Guinness was on point. I've not had many this good other than in Ireland. Certainly made me want a few more. Food was nice but certainly nothing worth the 7 month advanced booking we had. The pie filling was tasty but the top was slightly burnt and hard and not great which was a shame. We asked for some veg but was told we couldn't have anything other than a courgette dish which wasn't great. One of our party had lovely fresh broccoli so kind of surprising we couldn't have that. The others in our group enjoyed their food but again, didn't rave over it, just enjoyed it! The head waiter (assuming) was excellent and very knowledgable on the dishes we ordered and all staff were very pleasant that we spoke with. Would give it another go however. It has a long wait list for a good reason I suppose and maybe I'm critiquing a little hard.

After our visit for dinner on the 6th April, I was very disappointed, the food has gone down hill - the pigs checks were cold, and the meat portion was a lot smaller than normal. The cheeks are normally a star dish on the starters menu which we have had many times, the scollops were incredible and this dish was very good, but then we waited 45 minutes for our mains to arrive - the duck was good but the hanger steak was cold and flavourless. On this visit the heads of staff were very abrasive and are normally very helpful, so unfortunately will not be hurrying back.

First time for us to be ushered upstairs. Somewhat bewildered and a little agitated at the length of time we waited for the main course, (Sunday Roast) and when they were served, more disappointingly, the roast dinners were all only just luke warm, the portion of parsnips, a side dish of £5, had no familiar comforting caramelised colour, and were almost cold. The portion control on the lamb and beef was very meagre, beef, 1 slice, was sinewy and difficult to cut, however the pork dish had two decent slices and had excellent flavour with a little stuffing and excellent apple compote. The meat juices liquor or gravy or jus or whatever it was supposed to be, was unremarkable, almost watery. The serving team were first class, apologising at one point for the length of time, and it pleasing to hear one of them enquiring how our meals were. She was sorry to receive the feedback about the temperatures of the food and asked if she could get them reheated, we declined, we'd waited long enough, she mentioned she would feed back to the kitchen team and FOH manager, we sort of expected further engagement from one of the senior team members but nothing further. It was also a little disappointing to have the automatic 12.50% service charge added to drinks ordered and mainly drank at the bar counter downstairs and carried what was left in the glasses upstairs ourselves. £34.50 for two apple juices and a 2 and 4 year old childs portions of dinner, felt the polar opposite to bargainous. Weve always had very memorable and very enjoyable experiences here in the past, but they were not equalled today for us. Forage kitchen a mile or so away offers much better value for money, superb quality and presentation, excellent meat quality and portioning and additional veg complimentary on request in a very bright, airy, relaxed and contemporary setting. It will be Forage for us in the future im afraid team but we were very grateful you were able to host us this Easter Sunday.

My 83 year old friend booked a reservation for lunch by phone but when we arrived they had no record of our reservation and suggested she should have booked on line. As she doesn't use the Internet this was not an option. No apology was offered for losing our reservation. The dining room had a lovely roaring fire but we were told we would have to eat in the bar which was freezing. Five minutes after we sat down a couple came in saying they hadn't made a reservation and they were promptly escorted to the dining room, which we were told had no spaces! The food was nothing to write home about: one oyster costing £4 and the Welsh rarebit, although tasty, was served with no garnish just a small bit of cheese on toast with a small jug of vinegar dressing. Not impressed at all with the way my elderly friend was treated. We won't be going back.

Drove 35 minutes from penarth as my brother on visit from Birmingham loves eating out and had read good reviews about this restaurant Meal was fine unfortunately at 2:45 there was no parsnips or cauliflower cheese . The gravy they put on was minimal so when we asked for a bit more gravy we were charged £5 for a small jug . When dessert came they had run out of custard which you would have thought was basic . For a supposedly child friendly restaurant one would expect a section of the menu to reflect / appeal to the tastes of a child. The service was excellent with attendant waiting staff, the owner stopping to tell us about the food, quick drinks delivered to the table and our choice of table. Then the food came and our palates were spoilt for choice. The meat and fish were cooked to perfection and the sauces were subtle, tasty and delicious. Some of the veg choices did not entirely match but that is picking at extremely small nits! Finally the price was extremely reasonable for such amazing food and I would definitely visit again. It felt like a Michelin level experience. The area is also beautiful with clean air, ample space and preferable to the more upmarket Cowbridge. My fave was the crispy pig cheek which crunched and was soft in equal measure. My partner loved the beef which was delectably cooked and was accompanied with crispy potato and a rich jus. Try the produce and the fizz too I say!

We were really looking forward to dining here. It’s mentioned in a lot of guides and has good reviews (not so much recently though). The pub was nicely presented but the dining area was loud/echoey space which made it hard to hear each other. Lots of noise made by staff with plates/cups etc to add to that. We visited for Sunday lunch. A 1:30 booking didn’t feel late but already lots of items on the menu were not available. But that wasn’t communicated in advance of order and I’d have much rather known before ordering than keep changing our orders with repeat visits back to our table saying “sorry this has now run out too” The service was slow and inattentive. We chased for drinks twice with no joy until a different staff member spotted they were missing and sorted it out. No check backs for drinks and hard to catch attention. The food we did have was ok. The roast carrot (yes single carrot) was delicious on the thin pointy end but was almost raw and solid on the fat end. Yorkshire pudding done to death to the point it just crumbled into bits when trying to cut or eat with hands. Overall nothing special and I’ve had much better Sunday lunches in terms of the food and the service. Certainly not what I’d expected. A real shame and on that note not recommended

The food here was so nice. Had three courses for lunch on a Saturday and each one was brilliant. The staff were all lovely. Will definitely be back again.

Much improved since my last visit several years ago. On a Friday evening the bar was full with a great atmosphere and loads of character. Didn't try the food but an outstanding pint of HB. Well worth a visit.

Great food, however the "saver" menu isn't up to much. If you have the soup and the fish, you don't save anything and you have to buy spuds and veg on top of the set menu price.

Great quality food but prices and service charges are starting to leave a bad taste in the mouth. Our last few visits to the Hare and Hounds have had 10%, 12% and 0% added to the bill as s voluntary service charge. It doesn't feel voluntary if it keeps getting added to your bill. So we've asked to not have it added on occasion, especially when service hasn't been great. Add to the fact that beer can be £6+pint and wine £7+ small glass then it's become somewhere I recommend you don't drink alcohol. Food is still good, Hopefully food doesn't follow the drink overpricing otherwise we'll have to find elsewhere to spend our money.

We had a lovely Easter Sunday lunch at The Hare and Hounds today, it was a little pricey but lovely food and great service, if you don't like your beef too rare I would order the braised beef instead of the rump.

What a wonderful pub! The dinner was incredibly delicious! I really enjoyed the fresh oysters, and the lamb meal was delicious with the mint sauce.

I've waited three weeks before posting this review, to give some time to think about how bad the experience was at the Hare & Hounds. Went there for Sunday lunch. The loft space itself where we were seated was like a sauna, without any windows. The room furnished with cheap Ikea-like tables and chairs. The food was very poor. H&H had run out of parsnips, and lamb. Gravy was burned, with a bitter acidic taste. Roast potatoes cold. Beef (served as a steak, rather than roast beef) with the Sunday lunch was full of fat. £180 for 4 people, without deserts. Absolute rip off in my humble opinion, given the standard of food. 12.5% gratuity on the bill which I was too polite to object to. In retrospect I should have refused to pay the full bill, let alone the tip. It really only dawned on me walking back to the car after the food how bad our experience really was at the Hare & Hounds. Reviews here seem to be feast or famine. All I will say is that our experience was really bad, and I'd never return here.

My girlfriend and I went to the Hare Hounds for a midweek lunch. We both ordered off the saver menu due to the options being very appealing and such good value. The starters off lamb sweetbreads, and rhubarb, mackerel, and horseradish on sourdough were superb, with each flavour coming through. We both had duck, with bacon, and a type of roasted potato for main - this was equally tasty, and whilst the portion wasn't huge, it was certainly satisfying. We also opted to have pudding, Monmouth Plum Pudding which had a beautifully light egg meringue topping, and a chocolate éclair with cream and hazelnut praline. We washed the meal down with a glass of sauvignon blanc which was very well received and a very easy to drink golden ale from the Harbwr brewery in West Wales. Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive, and the food was served with the ideal amount of time between courses. Thoroughly recommend to anyone who appreciates good food and a nice atmosphere. We will definitely visit again.

Apparently this was meant to be one of the best Sunday dinners in Wales all I can say is they must not have tried many! The meet was fatty and the fat wasn’t rendered it was so hard to cut I give up on it!...

Lack of manners, perhaps female staff on duty who hangs up on customers needs to be retrained.

Nice pub with welcoming staff. We arrived at lunch time and found the restaurant a little chilly.Having chosen crispy pigs cheek I was served something resembling a slice of crispy belly pork. We had both chosen skate wing but I must say I've had a larger portion. I finished with an espresso, not served in an appropriate cup but a glass with less than a half inch of coffee in it. Also asked if they had a fish knife and was informed that they didn't have any. All in all an underwellming experience.

Xmas family meal with the mums and daughters. Was truly magical, place is decorated beautifully ready for xmas. Xmas menu was reasonably priced, food was fantastic. Must say though it was the staff that truly earned the 5 star, they were wonderfull with our elderly mothers walking us to our cars with umbrellas was so thoughtful. The staff serving us were so attentive too.. without being OTT. Truly lovely experience, really got us in xmas spirit! we will be back without a doubt.

I used to eat here on a Sunday regularly, all be it a while back. The Sunday roast options were always excellent with a proper home-made taste, Now its a pale imitation, a pseudo roast dinner of misplaced style over substance. A single leaf of Cavolo Nero, on top of that a 3x1 inch portion of Dauphinoise potato and a large quartered segment of very woody parsnip with an overcooked small single carrot laid languidly on top. A couple of slices of beef, somewhat well done casually leaning against the veg tower with it's ubiquitous Yorkshire pudding, all served on a cold plate, which did nothing to retain any meagre heat still present in the actual food. The accompanying soulless side veg, watery flavourless swede and carrot mash, an attempt at creamed cabbage with bacon, pointlessly served to 2 vegetarians who were sat at the table , and a small portion of steamed leaks, which were fine and some green beans, very much not fine, shrivelled for being held too long before serving. The service was good enough, though it did end once the plate was placed on the table. Though it was all let down by the dismally average pretentious food offering.
