The Hare and Hounds in Ashford

Never been here before pulled in on the off chance on a Saturday afternoon fantastic welcome by the landlady. My wife had a Ploughman. I had a ham, egg and chips. My wife said it was the best PLANS she’d ever had and my ham and chips was spot on give it a try you won’t be disappointed and great value for money.

This pub is single handedly the worst place I have ever been. The most unwelcoming staff and the food was atrocious. Only the locals are appreciated here, AVOID AT ALL COSTS

If the number of stars were a reflection of how miserable and rude the barman (owner?) was at this otherwise perfectly functional pub, I would use the Hubble Deep-Field image to describe the service we received. Despite the four of us ordering five rounds his demeanour got worse each time we approached the bar almost like the idea of us giving him more of our money was abhorrent and having patrons in his pub was incomprehensibly vile. At one point, determined to get even a tiny spark of life out of the guy, I tried to strike up a conversation about the Olympics which was playing on the tv and was completely ignored. Then just after 10 we were unceremoniously asked to leave as he was closing early. It truly was a joyous place to frequent, thank heaven’s we still had a good time regardless.

Visited on a Wednesday night as a group and barman couldn’t have been less interested in serving us. Pleases and thank yous missing and dirty looks when we bothered him for a round of drinks. Chucked out at ten as he wanted to close early - a pub for the locals I think.

Attended a wonderful wedding here last weekend. Such a lovely friendly atmosphere - staff were really friendly, food was excellent and everyone had a smile on their faces the whole day! Football was on and this didn’t detract from an amazing day at all. Well done Hare and Hounds - highest recommendation to you.

Lovely country pub with a lot of history. Welcoming atmosphere and staff really friendly. Plenty of choice of drinks and great food (gluten free catered for when we visited). Nice outside space for sunny days. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We recently had my brothers wedding reception here and what a fantastic venue it was!! Brilliant staff, great DJ, food was brilliant and we watched the Football!! Highly recommend!

Staff problem Asked to go to the toilet They refused at the bar counter I told them that I would pay money for the toilet. Also refused Goats! I don't recommend this place!

Today 23/3/2023 my partner and myself decided to have lunch at the Hare and Hounds. The time was 14:45 and I was aware that the kitchen closed at 15:00. That being said we were greated very unfriendly with "We close at three. I shall see if the kitchen will do anything". The place was empty, and very dull. The staff were more interested in the racing on the TV. I was asked to pay the bill before we had even sat down to eat. We ordered panini, which when arrived it was very mediocre. This was the first and last time I will be using this place, and neither will I be recommending it.

What a lovely pub! Friendly, attentive service. And absolutely superb food, Squid and prawn starters were beautifully cooked. And the Sunday roasts were incredible. Generous and beautifully cooked. Between us we tried the chicken, beef and pork belly, My husband reckons the roast potatoes were the best he had had in a pub. Finished off with home made gypsy tart. Wow. Super sweet but absolutely lovely. Dog friendly as well. Perfect pub for a Sunday afternoon.

A group of us went for our Christmas dinner as we have done for several years and it was absolutely wonderful as it always had been. A lovely friendly welcome and general atmosphere and the food was excellent and plenty of it!

Brilliant location, good atmosphere, beer served as its intended, overall good value for money, nothing is too much trouble.

Lovely place, my friend and I just popped in to check out this local pub, and we have stayed for dinner there. The atmosphere was really friendly and inviting. Service was really good as the kitchen was almost closed, but they decided to feed us anyway 😁 we had a few bears, garlic mushrooms for starter, and cod fishcakes for main. It was really yummy. We definitely will return there 😁

A fairly well-worn pub on the A20. One decent ale on (Doombar) which was up to standard. Sadly we visited because we were attending a wake - the food provided was good and hopefully the quality is reflected in the normal menu. Parking is a bit of an issue.

Called in for lunch on a Thursday. I had steak and onion pie, my husband had liver and bacon. All freshly cooked, served hot. Will definitelybe back.

Nice pub with a lovely feel to it, didn't try the food so can't comment on that, although the menu looked really nice. Sat in the pub garden which was a nice setting.

Food was excellent and really good value. It’s a really nice quaint pub and dog friendly too so was able to sit indoors with Barney our dog.

We popped in for a quick drink just before the place closed for the evening. Sadly very quiet, we were the only ones there, had a lovely chat with the landlord who is v friendly and has been at the pub (as a drinker, then as landlord) for decades! Would love to see it pick up more passing trade!

Stopped off for a drink after a walk, nice outside area , dog friendly. We didn't eat this time but definitely plan to after reading other reviews . Friendly locals, which probably sounds an odd thing to say but some pubs can be very clicky and it's nice to just go somewhere chilled out .

Friendly welcome, excellent food and good value. Tasty, tender liver and bacon, delicious cottage pie and beautifully cooked veg. Nice selection of desserts, too.

Took my wife for a Sunday roast and a week day lunch. For the roast my wife had chicken and I had lamb, both meals were cooked beautifully with plenty of veg, we also had a dessert which were very good. For the week day lunch I had beef stew and dumplings which was delicious and freshly made and my wife had her favourite, cod chips and mushy peas which she said was the best she'd had in a long time. Everything was well presented and we were looked after well by Mark and his staff. And the prices were very reasonable considering everything was freshly cooked. This is a lovely pub on the outskirts of Ashford. Book a week before for Sunday lunch or you might be disappointed.

Friendly service with good quality classic pub food. Would have got 5 stars if the Doombar beer had been spot on, instead taste was a bit off, my fault I should have mentioned it at the time, perhaps end of a barrel.

Yet another fantastic meal , been visiting roughly once a week since first trying in December 2022. Proper home cooked food served piping hot and extremely tasty and good value for money. Friendly family run pub where nothing is too much trouble. Try it you won’t be disappointed.

Hubby and I went here for our anniversary meal, lovely atmosphere, congenial host Plus well cooked meal what more can you ask for. We were not disappointed. We haven't been to H& H for years, liked it then liked it now...Well done, keep up the good work. 2023. Hubby now has dementia, and wanted to go there again this year,because he knew what a good night we had last year and it is comfortable for him. I had lasagne, hubby cottage pie plus veg both well cooked and presented well. Another pleasant night

Had an AMAZING Sunday roast today. Food was delicious and plentiful. Excellent service and great atmosphere. My Husband actually said “Why have we not been here before?!?” Menu has good mix of choices. We shall DEFINITELY be back. Would recommend 100%

This was our second Sunday lunch in the last few months. Although it was Mother’s Day and busy the food was excellent as was the service. We had the beef and slow cooked pork belly. We will be back soon

We discovered this pub during a dog walk before Christmas and have been back at least once a week since then. The staff have all made us feel very welcome and Steve and Maria (the chefs) cook superb meals. Great taste and great value for money. And on top of that - dog friendly which makes us and our dog extremely happy!! Sunday roast is outstanding! Best kept secret in Ashford

We had Sunday lunch there with friends and the roast dinners were really good. Plenty of fresh veg, which came separately, and a nice selection of meat. Reasonably priced for 2 or 3 courses, and the lady serving us was delightful. Would definitely recommend.

Home cooked food. Really lovely pub. Definitely somewhere you can bring your mum.

In a group of 12 for Christmas meal and catch up, the food and service was brilliant, will definitely return.

We had our Christmas meal here, was lovely food, warm welcome. The pub had a very festive ambience. It was a little quiet for a saturday night but this could also be an advantage for some. Dogs welcome and wine was lovely.

Out for a family Christmas meal. Couldn't fault the meal or the service . Good sized portions served on hot plates. Good price. Dining room was a bit small if you had a large party, unless there was another I didn't see. Small carpark but large layby very close. Recommend.

This was a beautiful place to stop on our way in to ashford from charing it would be very easy to drive past but dont this lovely family run pub brings back what a traditional pub should be and the staff were friendly helpful and went above and beyond to help us enjoy our time the food is top quality homemade pub food and portion sizes to match would 100% recommend

I went yesterday to the hare and hounds pub for a family meal with my husband and sons we all had a roast dinner me and my husband had beef my sons had chicken the chicken was pink not cooked and very slimey mine and my husbands beef was like a lump of grisle and blood dripping all over the plate the potatoes was rock hard not cooked at all the vegetables we're not cooked the yourkshire puddings was frozen cold not cooked through I'm not one to complain but I've never been out for a pub dinner as bad as that I told the staff in there we wasn't happy with the meal it was not cooked and disgusting the staff then turned around and said well your disgusting in front of my little 8 year old boy this made him very upset as she raised her voice at me very unprofessional ive never had this kind of disrespect and rudeness towards myself and my family very unprofessional unfortunately we all have diarrhea and sickness now today so I would certainly AVOID this place for food ......

This place is horrendous I'm not a complainer unless I have to !! We all had roast either chicken Ken or beef 17 of us so a large booking .....the beef and chicken needed a defibrillator not even exaggeration lumps of chewy red meat rare on plates you could not even chew the chicken was undercooked pink in the middle the roast potatoes were disgusting the cauliflower cheese was not even grilled to finish off the whole thing was disgusting but when I complained I was faced with verbal abuse by management and staff the place was a joke I asked for our money back which I got but I asked them for photos of our food and they took the plates pretty sharp .....we ended up going to the beefeater !!!!! Jokes AVOID you ruined my mum's birthday she could even touch her dinner disgusting and yes I know beef is pink but not flesh and raw flesh is what was on our plates Filth no wonder it was empty 🤔

we had a party of 17 and had booked sunday lunch, it was the worse sunday lunch most of us have ever experienced , the food was appalling uncooked pink chicken breast on the bone, meat so chewy it had to be swallowed in lumps if you ate it at all, uncooked roast potatoes, cooked frozen veg, bisto gravy granules gravy only 4 out of 17 dinners were eaten the rest were left mostly on the plate, lucky the owners knew it was bad and refunded us the money, but it didnt compensate for a ruined day, if you like your food cooked properly and fresh avoid this pub

8 of us on a day out in Kent. On way home looking for food. Found the Hare and Hounds on Google rang them and they said not a problem we can fit you all in. Well I must say great hospitality very pleasant welcome quick to serve drinks and take food order. Not at all disappointed the food came out all together and pipeing hot and it was delicious. We'll recommend a visit.

We dropped in yesterday unannounced with a party of 9 for drinks and dinner. We were welcomed, tables were assembled for us and eveything was handled in a pleasant and professional manner. We were all particulalry impressed by the quality of the meals. I would strongly recommend the Hare and Hounds for its exceptional service and quality.

Great little pub in the middle of the gorgeous countryside!! Beer tasted amazing, and they even keep there glasses in the freezer!!! Brilliant place.

Food was really nice and a reasonable price as well, the only downside is tables are a little cramped for four adults. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, we went for Sunday dinner the portion sizes are also very good.

Stopped off for a bite to eat, didn’t make a booking as just passed the pub by luck. Had the buttermilk chicken burgers that were beautiful, tasted chips and fresh salad on the side. Lad behind the bar was lovely too who served us!! Will be coming back!

This Victorian Pub is very traditional serving a range of Beers and Pub Grub. The beer and food is of a good standard and well priced. My reservations are woth the range of Beerscon offer. I am a Beer drinker and having only one Hand Pumped Beer is a little disappointing. Though with the uncertainty of regular custom created by Covid who can blame them?

Excellent meal for all 4 of us - home made steak pudding, mash and veg all cooked perfectly. Always really good, hearty pub food and you never leave hungry. Thank you.

It is very easy to whizz along the A20 and not even consider using this typical looking English country pub. Next time you are looking for a place to eat, use The Hare & Hounds. It is family owned and run, so forget the usual corporate Beefeater/Burger/Grill menu. The food is of a genuinely homemade style. We have had several lunches there now, with friends, different meals, and each time the food has been consistently good. We will certainly visit again next year when we are back in the area (we may even drive there specially).

For various reasons we haven't been to The Hare & Hounds for nearly 3 years, booked a table there last Sunday for lunch on the way back from a few days in Hastings ( first time we have visited in day light ) and we were not disappointed. The food was as good as ever ( first visit at lunchtime as always been for dinner before ), great Roast beef and plenty of lovely veg - superb value for money. Staff were fantastic, glad to see that they have survived all the problems with Covid.

It was a sunny mid day Saturday and we passed by this place, thought we’d give it a try, my husband and I had each half a pint of cider.. we sat outside which is really nice. We’ll come back again and try their food.

Lovely relaxing place for a drink

Have not been to the Hare and Hounds in such a long time, why did I wait. Met up with a friend for a catch up, ok a gossip...like ladies at lunch do. We spent a good few hours sitting under the umbrells on a hot day. Was fairly busy, but safe distancing and masks worn. The menu was varied and reasonably priced. We had the cheese and ham ploughmans and drinks. Ploughmans was nicely presented, all the usual trimmings, warm rolls and crackers. Very filling, and enjoyable. Service was prompt and non intrusive. Worth the money, and will visit again, hopefully not leave it too long this time.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. We can down as a post lockdown celebration as a group of 9. Not only were they able to accommodate us comfortably, but we're able to give us enough table space to keep within the social distancing guidelines...

I am not, by any means, a fussy eater;in fact, I'd say I'm easily pleased. That being said, I was extremely disappointed by the food. The started was okay at best. The main: the meat was dry, unseasoned and tasted old. Also, the e happened...

Nice and relaxed drinks outside with friends despite the busy road location. An understandably limited range of beers on at the moment limits this to 3 rather than 4 stars.

Visited yesterday with 2 kids and we were absolutely shattered. We were made to feel really welcome and the menu catered for all our needs and the food was lovely. Can not recommend enough.

Went to The Hare and Hounds for lunch on Sunday 19th January. The menu wasn't very extensive, offering the usual Sunday roast and not much more.......but what they did serve was EXCELLENT ! We chose to have the slow roasted belly pork with a Yorkshire...
