We visited Lismoyne as a party of 5 for Sunday Lunch to see if it would be a suitable venue for our parents 60th wedding anniversay, who wanted a traditional English menu. The restaurant was quiet, but they did have another function in one of the other private rooms, apparently. The staff were friendly and courteous. The food, when it arrived, was excellent - they followed our preferences exactly, all the vegetables were nicely presented and cooked but still firm, I had salmon which was not over-cooked (often experienced in other restaurants) and the puddings were lovely (I had a really nice light and fluffy bread and butter pudding and their creme brulee was just right). So, why only 'Average'? We arrived at 11:55, having booked our table for 12noon, and ordered quite quickly, then waited an hour for our food to arrive. We then had to wait a further hour for dessert to arrive. The staff were apologetic, explained that they had a big party elsewhere, and offered us complimentary coffee, but unfortunately well over 2 hours for a 2-course meal left us very disappointed.

My wife and I were staying at the Lismoyne last Thursday and Friday and, unfortunately, dined Friday evening when the hotel was hosting a 'Fawlty Towers' dinner event in another room and thus our order, we were informed, may be a little delayed; it was delayed so much that I complained, suggesting that, whenever there was a function the hotel should employ extra staff, only to be told that they had done. In addition to the tardiness of service, the service itself was deplorable, not one part of it being right first time. The barman was drafted in to serve drinks but he, clearly, was not familiar with the table plan as he didn't manage to deliver one order to the right table once and we got 1 glass of wine rather the bottle we had ordered. The food was very good when we got it and, perhaps, on a midweek night when the waitress wasn't chasing about like a headless chicken, the experience would be good but I can only report haw it was when I was there. I will comment on the hotel here as well to make this a little more balanced. We had a lovely room (bathroom a little snug), very comfortable bed & pillows and the breakfast was 'buffet' style rather than 'cooked to order' which I think is never as good but I order porridge and poached eggs to overcome part of this; I do, unfortunately, have to state that, again, service was terrible, the girl who started to serve us just didn't give us her full attention so we got tea instead of coffee and she forgot to ask whether I wanted white or brown bread with my poached eggs so had to come back. Again, I think that part of the problem was that people had stayed overnight and they just couldn't cope with the volume which made me wonder how frequently the hotel is full.

Just had a wonderful meal. The food was beautifully cooked, meat was succulent and the taste of each dish was outstanding. It was good value for money, with great service. Just a shame it was quiet, yet again it was Sunday evening!

Enjoyed Sunday Lunch here with friends and family last week. Reasonably priced, tasty food served well. Checked out the evening menu and rebooked for a party for 30 later on the year! Smart contemporary style, trying very hard to have its own identity although situated in a lovely hotel. Many restaurants have tried and failed but it looks like The Hampshire is on the rght tracks to make this restaurant a real success... Will definitely be back soon

Just to be clear this review relates only to the restaurant at the Lismoyne. I have no experience of its accommodation. We were invited to the Lismoyne for a friend's birthday party. Although our party size was quite small - less than 12 - we had to order in advance - always a bad sign I think. The restaurant itself was perfectly OK, although if I had been a regular diner I would have been a bit put out that our group (and not a noisy group) was in the same area as the few other diners that were there. In terms of food: Starters: my wife had Prawn Cocktail - Ok but just a prawn cocktail, and I had the Silton and bacon salad. it was quite nice but rather dry - it would have benefitted from a dressing on the leaves. Mains: Roast Loin of Pork. Very nice pork, but the whole meal was a little too cool; Chicken Forestiere. The Chicken was quite tasty - but unfortunately was very red in the middle, and the accompanying vegetables were cold. Had it not been to spare our friends embarrasment, I would have sent it back. Deserts: Ice cream - small portion; Cheese and biscuits - a good selection of cheeses and biscuits. I really would expect a full service hotel to be able to deliver food that is hot and properly cooked - especially when the numbers involved are not large.. Can't comnment on prices - but i don't get the feeling it's a bargain.
