Nice main courses; desserts ordinary, service very nice and efficient. Wines good but pricey, atmosphere rather dull and the heating seemed to be off (in November!).

The service was terrible. We had prebooked for 13, but they seemed totally unprepared and overwhelmed. The table we had was all sticky & was in need of a very good clean The menu is quite limited so when two items of the main course were not available, that did not help Will.never go there again,a bad experience

Have been here many times and have never been disappointed. A better range of beer than most of the pubs in the Fleet area, always well conditioned. Really good food at reasonable prices too. Recommend a walk along the canal to Crookham Village and back after a hearty meal here, lovely spot.

Very overpriced, especially drinks. Roast dinner overpriced, not enough of anything. Roast beef was a total rip off 2 small slices, horseradish non existent taste, wasn’t really sure what it was. Gravy the same regardless of which meat ordered. No plans to return.

Expensive roasty with the tiniest amount of vegetables, gravy and smallest amount of custard ever. Times are hard I get it but scrimping on the strangest things. Half a carrot! Quarter of a parsnip, spoon full of greens etc etc. nice meat but mean amount. Lovely wine, pleasant waitress who told us EVERYONE MOSNS about meat portion! £180 roasty lunch for 4!!!!!

To start with, once again, under staffed so we had bad service, in fact as we were outside, nearly non existent. We gave up waiting to order our deserts having been told by the waitress she would return to take our order! No mint sauce, just a jelly, tasteless gravy, dry chicken with no stuffing, 2 small slithers of beef @ £24.00 - 20% fat, over cooked veg @ very small portion, BUT the roast potatoes were good! Such a shame. We think that there are so many other venues offering better value, especially when you see the wine list prices, the food needs to be far more superior and plentiful to justify their prices.

Fabulous meal with family to celebrate my Father’s 90th birthday. Only hiccup was having requested a table in the conservatory area this request was not met but luckily I’d popped in early and this was rectified. This was soon forgotten once we’d all arrived, settled in and started enjoying delicious food and the attentive but not intrusive service. Puddings weren’t wanted as we were heading home for cake but regardless a complimentary desert appeared with candle for the Birthday Boy which was a lovely touch. Thanks to all the team, keep up the great work!

We went for dinner last night and will not be returning! We ordered the scallops for starters at 11 pound each and received what seemed to be 2 scallops cut in half, giving us 4 very thin slices of scallops with some chorizo scattered on top. Tasted good but the quality for the price was not acceptable in our opinion. I ordered the ragu which again was a rather small helping and personal preference found the pasta too hard still. My other half ordered the beef rib sharer plate which stated £30 per person. Maybe our mistake but we were then charged £60 for this! They knew we weren't sharing. Like I said, maybe it was us misinterpreting the price but nonetheless, the amount of meat that was on the plate WAS NOT enough for 2 people, let alone worthy of £60!! I suspect that when they knew he was having this alone they gave him less meat, and a large bone with no meat on it. He asked for it medium rare and it came, I'd say, more medium to well done. There were only 2 of us, and as I see also from another review, "optional" service charge was added to the bill at £14. We did not think to look before we left as we were so taken aback with the price! But as much as Service was quick, the pub wasn't that busy and I thought staff appeared grumpy. So for a bottle of wine, cocktail, 2 starters and 2 mains we paid £153 which we were shocked at, and I'll not be returning due to it NOT being value for money at all! Small portions and overpriced.

Food good quality but for £24.50 for roast beef it should have been more than 2 slices of roast beef. 3 roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, one carrot and one parsnip. Third time of visiting. Had the roast lamb. Unfortunately the veg looked as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. The lamb was very chewy but tasted good. Such a shame. It started out to be a lovely meal. The service was very slow and poor which is the first time we've experienced this. Very little attention to detail. We had to wait a long time between visits from anyone to check if we were ok or needed anything and had to wait a long time for the drinks. The pub was busy so perhaps too few staff available to serve? Overall, not the best experience to date. Hopefully we'll try again soon. Normally the food is wonderful.

What a shame! Menus are filthy. Had the roast lamb and Belly Pork, lamb was very chewy and lacked flavour. Belly pork was nice. Roast potatoes had been sitting around for ages and tasted like they had been refried. They were very dry inside. Didn't bother complaining as it took ages for our drinks to arrive, then had to ask for a change to them and this then took 15 minutes. Which the food came when we asked again when are meals were delivered as they had forgotten. Menu says the lamb comes with mint sauce, had to ask for that. They clearly forgot again. By the time it did come the meal was cold. Asked for bill waited 15 to 20mins then went to the bar to pay. The top of the bar was strewn with dirty plates mostly with left over potatoes, someone was eating at the bar surrounded by them. Was very off putting. Service shocking, food definitely not worth the price. We went at 7pm, I am looking for excuses but there isn't any at all! Go if you have money to waste..

Unfortunately since it's renovation and new management The Exchequer has massively gone downhill. Our visit was for a family meal on Saturday night, we were welcomed and shown to our table and then things slowed down, the restaurant was full but only two waitresses on duty who received next to no help from their management, the two waitresses were pleasant but simply over worked. The food showed signs it could be good but where the staffing levels were not adequate for the number of customers food came out slowly and warm at best. Basics such as clearing the previous courses plates and providing cutlery for the next course didn't happen. It appeared that the food was sitting on the pass waiting to come out for some time as the presentation was great but the temperature when it hit the table let it down. The cocktails were fab when they eventually got to the table but the white wine was dropped at the table warm and no offer for the customer to check they were happy with the bottle and temperature. I hope things get back to how they used to be but currently worth avoiding with so many good eateries in the area.

AVOID. We went for a meal for Mother's day (10.03.23) here and based on very good reviews we thought this will be a nice treat for all of us. We booked a table and preordered food in advance. Upon arrival our table was not ready and we had to wait half an hour for it to be available. Whilst we waited, we were offered a free drink, which was appreciated. Once the table was finally free, we were sat down and waitress brought our nibbles after about 10-15 min from sitting us down, which we basically inhaled as were very hungry at that point. Once we finished, we were waiting another 15-20 min we were served our starters. After we finished eating starters and plates were cleared, we waited another 30 min for mains. After the plates were cleared after mains, again we waited another half hour for desserts, which at that point we did not enjoy anymore. I appreciate, that this is one of the busiest days in pub's calendar, but if we were asked to preorder our meals to avoid delays, not sure why then a lunch which should have taken an 1.5 hr max turned to 3 hour event. The wait inbetween meals was exhausting and no updates were given as to why food was delayed, other than sorry. Additionally, food was not the best, pork was uncooked in places, mushroom wellington was bland and dry. We paid full price for this and service charge. I would not recommend this place, food is not worth the money. And a day which should have been a nice familly gathering was spoilt and made us feeling very dissapointed.

The sirloin of beef was cooked to perfection, medium rare, my husband had the roast lamb, which was equally well cooked, he also said he had some sort of shredded lamb served with it, which was extremely tasty, any chance of the recipe please?? 😊 the veggies were also well cooked, just right, I normally find they're normally practically raw in most restaurants but these were lovely and not crunchy.... Very disappointing. We chose The Exchequer on a cold damp night because of its real fire and cosiness - no fire on, no radiators on either and a freezing draught coming up from the cellar. We just wanted two burgers, which we’d had before but did not want the house sauce or pickles and ordinary ketchup and mayonnaise. One burger arrived with pickles hidden under the lettuce, the other slathered in the house sauce which contains pickles. The waitress did bring a fresh bun and fresh salad to replace the one covered in house sauce, and just said sorry but she had noted it down on our order. The chips were not particularly hot and the burgers cooled quickly with the chilly temperature inside the restaurant. We asked for the bill and were shocked to see a service charge added too. The Exchequer is not what it was, and seems well over priced for what you actually get on your plate - we realised when we got home there were no crispy onions either which were on the description in the menu. Not somewhere to return to.

Firstly the positive – the staff were friendly and accommodating. But sadly, now the negatives – although this pubs' website states "Our spacious patio area is ideal for soaking up some summer sun after a local dog walk", it did not mention that dogs are allowed in the restaurant area. I am allergic to dog hair and both my partner and I think it's unhygienic to have dogs around dining tables. There were so many of them on the day we visited it felt like we were having lunch in Crufts !!! Also, the food is VERY expensive for what is basically pub grub (over £120 for three meals with no starters, 2 cokes and two glasses of wine !). Our roasts were ok (although both the lamb and beef were not very tender) and we've had far better food that is less expensive elsewhere. We won't be returning.

We were a party of 9 and arrived at 7 o’clock for our annual Christmas celebration The tables were wobbly, there was a spring sticking out of the base of one of the chairs and we had to ask for the christmas tree lights to be put on. Not a good start! On paper the menu looked good and price was in line with other local pubs. However… The main courses came with very little (if any) vegetables which came at a supplement of £4.50. The scallops starter was a £4 supplement and you were given 2. The cheese plate advertised for desert had only one type of cheese. The pub says that it caters for gluten free diets, so why were there no gluten free mince pies? The beef bourguignon was a surprise. I was expecting some sort of rich casserole. Instead I received quite a thick slice of fatty beef with a small amount of gravy. All of us who had this dish complained. The choux bun desert was equally disappointing. On the positive side, the staff were excellent and did their best to make good. We were compensated with a free bottle of wine, a couple of free deserts and my beef was exchanged. However I still feel that I left the pub wishing I had gone elsewhere for this Christmas meal. It was overpriced for what it was and that special evening with friends was marred. Next year I will look elsewhere.

Nine of us went for our Christmas meal last night and we ate from the Festive Menu. It wasn't the best meal we have had together. Staff serving were very, very good. The beer was also good - and apparently, so was the wine ( I didn't drink any). But the food wasn't 100%. The menu is limited as it's 'festive', so there were about 5 or 6 items each for starter, mains and dessert. There was a 'fixed' price for two or three courses. We all had a starter and main and a few of us had dessert. There were no complaints about the starters. I had the scallops, which had a surcharge of £4 on top of the fixed price and had a bet with a couple of our crowd how many I would get. I reckoned 2, but the consensus was 3. When the dish came, I 'won'... I had two not particularly large scallops in a sauce with something green. It was a very tasty dish and I know scallops are expensive but it did seem a bit mean to me plonking an extra £4 on top of the standard starter price just for 2 scallops. But never mind, it tasted nice and certainly hadn't blunted my appetite! I then had the monkfish thermidore which I thoroughly enjoyed, although I just got four slices of sauteed potato at the side. Luckily my wife doesn't like potatoes much so gave me some of hers as I otherwise wouldn't have had enough food (and I don't eat much). Four of our party had the 8 hour slow braised beef bourguignon and three the turkey dish. No one had enough gravy for their turkey, but the staff quickly supplied some more and that was generally reviewed as OK. But everyone had problems with their beef - it was too fatty and tough and had very few veggies. One of our group asked for another dish instead - which the staff were happy to do. But there was a fair bit of grumbling about the beef around the table. And finally the people who had dessert, all had the choux bun with ice cream. That was considered as 'OK'. So not a brilliant meal. It was pretty expensive - but everything is when eating out nowadays - and there was obviously something not right with the beef dish - which isn't exactly complicated to make. In fairness, we got the price of a bottle of wine taken off our bill, plus a change of main course without any additional cost and as I said earlier, the serving staff did a great job - and the pub itself is very nice with a good atmosphere.

Although the food is very good at this pub the venue is terrible for disabled people and powerchair users such as myself. You are unable to get into the pub yourself due to two steps going up into the pub. Someone with you either needs to go in and ask for a ramp or if you were on your own you would need to phone inside and ask for someone to help. The ramp is kept outside so when visiting in the rain the ramp was slippery, the ramp is made from plastic and would not be suitable for heavy powerchairs as it would probably bend or snap. The ramp is also not fit for purpose as it doesn't sit flush and feels precarious going up and down it. Someone needs to stand at the bottom of the ramp and hold the end down in order for it to be used. There are two further ramps that are required when inside the pub, one of which is the one from outside and again was still slippery from the rain. I did not feel safe coming in and out of this venue. To top off a bad accessibility trip there are no accessible toilets, and the toilet that is available does not have a wide enough door in order to get a wheelchair or powerchair through. If this hadn't have been a group meal that I had already paid for then I would have turned around and gone somewhere accessible. Although the staff were polite and apologetic that there was no dedicated facilities for disabled people they stated that as the building was old there is no requirement for them to do so. So in short, if you're non disabled and can get in and out and use the facilities great, if you are disabled then please avoid like the plague for your own safety.

The food and service was to a good standard with everyone enjoying their roast meals. The kids prawn cocktail is a little on the spicy side. The wine selection is good and we were happy overall.

Very expensive, roast dinner was awful, I almost didn't want to eat it, luckily it was tiny! Left hungry. Service charge added. Won't be returning.

Really nice relaxed brunch on a Saturday lunchtime. We had the veggie breakfast and teas and coffees, both food and service was excellent.

Fantastic family pub popped in Sunday for a bite to eat and a drink didn't have a roast but must say saw some going past, looked lovely had some cooked snacks they were excellent bar staff and service staff were so friendly good choice of drinks the pub has a lovely front beer garden. when we parked in the car park we were greeted by 3 deer just standing in the field looking at us I would definitely recommend although the food looked amazing it did seem a little expensive ..but they do say you get what you pay for so maybe next timx😋👍

Very disappointed in our Sunday lunch here yesterday. We were a group of 4 adults and 2 children. Once seated at our table we were left for over 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. The food took over 45 minutes - one of the kids meals arrived about 20 minutes before everyone else’s, no offer of any sauces or condiments. We had to keep getting up to find someone if we needed anything. Eventually our food arrived and it was just ok. £22 for the Sunday roast beef and I had two small pieces of meet on my plate… I’m not sure if they were short staffed or had problems in the kitchen but either way, communication with us would have been appreciated. The servers all seemed very young, so either they haven’t been trained properly or they’re very inexperienced. No one checked on us to see if we needed anymore drinks or if everything was ok - we noticed the same at the tables around us and that other people were getting up to ask for things. My friend went to the toilet at one point while we were still waiting for food and he noticed that about 4 of them were just standing and chatting behind the bar! The female toilets also had the most awful smell (one customer commented that it smelled as if a dead animal was in the toilets). So unfortunately we didn’t have a good experience and will not be returning.

6 of us all had different roasts, including the vegetarian wellington, all excellent. Had a couple of extra sides of veg, the tender stem broccoli was amazing. Extra roast potatoes and yorkies were offered too! Nice touch. Deserts were superb also. Compliments to the “new” chef? It was a very busy Sunday lunch but everything went smoothly, perfect waiting time for everything served. Wine was pricey, £16 for a glass of Malbec, and roasts a little expensive but certainly worth it. Our waitress was charming, ( sorry didn’t catch her name but long blond hair?) very attentive. Will definitely return.

We arrived for an early lunch and were warmly greeted by our waitress. The service throughout was great. We chose a starter and two sides each for our mains. They were fresh and delicious and we couldn't resist the desserts. Well done, The Exchquer - we'll be back!

Lovely staff; very friendly and welcoming. Food is very expensive (imo) and portions are on the skimpy side. The food has alot of salt added and meals are very rich. Drinks are expensive too, compared to other pubs. Not wheelchair friendly - there are steps up to the entrance.

4 of us for dinner. Service was great, ales were great though portions were rather on the small side. My prawn curry, whilst tasty, was meagre. 8-10 of the tiniest little prawns.

So disappointed.I have heard nothing but good things about here so decided to go here to celebrate a birthday. There were small fruit flies flying around our table, dirty cocktail glass,. Ordered cauliflour cheese for an additional £4.50 which was just cauliflour sprinkled wiith parmesan and then over grilled. Ordered 3 roast Lamb and had to ask for the mint jelly and then they bought enough for one. The desert I ordered was caramelised banana This consisted of 3 small chunks of banana the ends coated in brown sugar and I think it may have had a brief contact with a blow torch accompanied with a sweet cream. Didn't complain and stumped up the extra for the service charge, which equated to almost £19, so do the maths yourself on a meal for 5. Won't be going back in a hurry!

Went there today for lunch to celebrate the news we are to become first time grandparents in March 24 and I mentioned this to our waiter on arrival. Food was superb and waiter very polite and friendly. After paying our bill our waiter bought us over a complimentary bottle of fizz to celebrate with after baby arrives, what a lovely thoughtful thing to do, many thanks will definitely be back with baby !!

Two of us went for lunch after a walk along the canal on a Tuesday in September. It was such a shame that there were but a few people in the restaurant area. The food is excellent and so much more than the average pub grub. The staff are charming and the menu has some delightful dishes. Highly recommended. Will we go again? Most certainly.

The Exchequer has always been a firm favourite for us, however our most recent visit was disappointing. There isn’t any table service outside, which meant we had to clear away a previous tables plates as this hadn’t been done. When our food arrived the waitress spilt some of the food on the table - we weren’t offered any replacement or gesture of apology. The food was also overcooked, and nobody checked on us to ask how our meal was. Given how quiet the place was, the staff could have done more to check in with us and their remaining guests. For the price we paid plus service charge, we were expecting higher quality.

I was keen to share this as I am aware the reviews haven't been great recently and we were told they had issues in the kitchen. However, today, we went for a family meal with a guest from NZ. They service was polite and attentive with a larger than life character who added that extra fun. Food was delicious, hot and generally excellent for the price. The Grosvenor Burgers were delicious, as was the sausage and mash and Thai Curry. The Chicken Cesar was perhaps the only slight disappointment, don't get me wrong, it was delicious and the Romaine lettuce heart with parmesan and anchovie crumb was stunning. It was only disappointing as compared to the other dishes it didn't seem much for the price. It wasn't a massive piece of chicken and it only came with the lettuce and a few sticks of asparagus but it was more expensive than all the other dishes. It was incredibly tasty and I won't critise it for that. Would highly recommend this delightful place.

We chose The Exchequer mostly for its location between Fleet and Winchfield on the towpath of the Basingstoke Canal, which we have been walking in sections. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the friendly service. We were here for Sunday lunch and both my belly pork and my wife’s mushroom wellington were excellent. We chose the miso hispi cabbage as a side dish and that was great too, as was the apple and gooseberry crumble with delicious custard we had for dessert. The wine list looks reasonably priced and well-chosen, although not all the wines listed were available. The service, particularly from the lady in charge, was very good. We will be back!

All 4 meals were cold. Took it back, and even though it was a bit warmer it wasn’t anyway near good enough. Did not offer anything as a gesture of good will. Have been going there for almost 20 years, but will not be going back again

As we were a party of 12 we ordered our menu choices a month in advance. We were told that there was a shortage of bar staff so there were limited drinks available and no cocktails, although there was a full complement of kitchen staff . The table wasn’t clean and was sticky, it hadn’t been wiped properly. We waited over 2 hours for our pre-ordered food to arrive and were just about to leave when it eventually did. The food was adequate although uncomplicated and some dishes were lukewarm. Two hours for a main course in a pub is way too long . If there are staffing problems and you cannot provide a proper service , cancel the lunch service. We were offered a discount off the bill to compensate for the shambles and poor experience. It was sad that my Dad’s 80th was marked by such a poor experience. Avoid !

The food was good, great pies, served with an odd gravy. Prices are good. Service was generally okay, but we were left waiting on 2 or 3 occasions. We needed more drinks on one occasion, but had to wait until someone appeared after a fair wait.

Four of us ate at The Exchequer today 8 Aug 23. Fairly disappointed. Two of us had the risotto, which was very salty and if you don’t eat salt at all, was nearly inedible. The fish and chips was fine, as was the Thai curry. Desserts were a big let-down - the chocolate mousse with salted caramel ice cream etc was just a bowl of ice cream with a thin coil of chocolatey stuff extruded from a plastic bottle on top. If there was any banoffee sauce, it was indistinguishable. There were a few crumbs of honeycomb and a tiny sprinkling of raspberry, all for the high price of £9.50. We had one starter, four main courses and two desserts, plus a pint of beer and four nonalcoholic drinks for over £120. Seemed very steep for what we had. As we were with guests we didn’t want to make a fuss, but we won’t be hurrying back.

Our first visit as fairly new to the area. Very welcoming, friendly, helpful staff. Enjoyed looking at the cars as it was a Motor fest event. Food was lovely, my husband had the pie of the day and I enjoyed roast beef. Will definitely be returning. Great country location near the Basingstoke canal.
