Best burgers in town! We visited last week for a lovely lunch with the family, and I have to say, it won’t be my last. This was my first time here, and we’ve already booked another table to return for their Sunday roasts! Now, onto the main event—the buttermilk Norfolk chicken burger. It was cooked to perfection, with a wonderfully crunchy crust. The combination of buttermilk chicken, smoky cheese, and streaky bacon was absolute heaven. And those beef dripping chips? A game-changer that paired perfectly with the burger. The service was fantastic too—friendly, efficient, and made the entire experience feel special. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

I was treated to a surprise birthday lunch at The Exchequer, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled! From start to finish, it was an unforgettable experience. We kicked things off with the Nduja Scotch eggs—wow, what a way to wake up the taste buds! Perfectly seasoned, with a runny yolk that was just spot on. Then, for the main course, I went for the classic Fish and Chips. It might be a traditional dish, but the talented chefs at The Exchequer really know how to elevate it! The batter was wonderfully crispy (and gluten-free!), the herby mushy peas added a lovely twist, and the tartare was fresh and full of flavor. The fish was perfectly cooked, flaky, and delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. Their warm and helpful approach added to the entire experience, making it feel even more special. I’ve already booked my next visit to try their Sunday roasts, and I can’t wait to return and explore more of their incredible menu!

Lovely staff; very friendly and welcoming. Food is very expensive (imo) and portions are on the skimpy side. The food has alot of salt added and meals are very rich. Drinks are expensive too, compared to other pubs. Not wheelchair friendly - there are steps up to the entrance.

After a poor experience, I revisited again on the 23rd January 25 as they were running a special offer. Having told the server that we were making use of this offer, which was quite restrictive, meant we had to change our food order to qualify. We chose to share a desert only to be told that now only one of us would qualify for the discount! Asked why he didn't let us know, we were told we should have looked at the T&Cs and was very rude. UNBELIEVABLE! He also added a service charge automatically even though he hadn't checked in with us about the food. Like other reviewers have shared, this pub is inconsistent with their service which is a shame as the we personally enjoyed the food and would have booked our family of 16 in for February but was not prepared to risk it. Better training on how to treat customers and when an issue is raised it is dealt with without ruining the customers' dining experience. Hopefully, this will improve their customer feedback scores.

Me and my family entered the Exchequer and all ordered the same burger. They all came at the same time except mine, which can half an hour later with no ketchup nor my pickle. The fries tasted microwaved. And the burger tasted disgusting.( I've eaten the same one before)When my brother's food was being served, our waiter sung the plate so fast, spilling ketchup on my jogging bottoms, which are now stained. It ruined my night.

We had scallops and prawn coctails to start. Excellent. Scallops cooked perfectly and lots of prawns in the cocktails. Main courses were Crab Cakes, Blade of beef and a Chicken burger. All loved them. Service was great although the two young ladies did struggle a bit when two large parties arrived. Not their fault as management should have more staff on if they know they have large bookings.

To keep this brief, the food was very tasty and, I fully accept, the staff very busy (it was Boxing Day). But I have to say the portions were ridiculously small. I ordered the Grosvenor Burger at £16:95 and had to pay extra for cheese and extra again for bacon. When it arrived there was a small pot of chips and a tiny burger. No garnish, no coleslaw, no offer of any sauces etc. All in, just short of £20. My son ordered pork belly. And I genuinely had to ask if I'd ordered a starter by mistake. I asked to speak to the manager who basically just stated that the price was the price. End of. So I informed him I wouldn't be paying that price as I'd expected a meal not a starter!! In the end he knocked off the drinks and a further 25%. Off the food. So £30 for two starter-sized main courses. And in appreciate that gesture. I always try to support local independents but in all honesty, I won't be going back. There's a lot of choice locally where they are more than happy to serve decent food at a decent price. My experience today is that The Exchequer isn't one of them.

We went for the Christmas meal with ten friends and pre ordered from the Christmas menu. I had Duck liver parfait to start, it looked like cat food and tasted no better. For the main course I had the 8-hour slow braised shoulder of beef bourguignon, it was a large lump of meat, dried out at the edges and really tough. Another guest had this and could not eat it as it was so tough. My husband paid £8 extra for the sole and it was a miserable fish and the vegetables did not come until after he finished the fish, even though they were pre ordered. It could have been worse if we could have ordered the turkey meal. I did not order a dessert but my friend ordered the Craquelin choux bun it looked awful just an enormous swirl of artificial brown icing. The custard for other puddings was delivered well after the puddings. Even though the restaurant was nearly empty the service was terrible.

The roast is awful quality, doesn't match the menu and it's an absolute rip off! We have been to The Exchequer every year for my dads birthday for several years now. We were so sad and disappointed by our experience today. The roast came and we thought we had accidentally been given a child's portion. The roast lamb, pork and beef were all one tiny slice of meat. The pork had no apple or crackling as advertised and we had to ask for both. The wait staff then bought us a bowl of pork scratchings. We pointed this out, they took them away only to come back and say "the kitchen says that this is just what we do now". The beef had no horseradish cream, the lamb had no mint. The entire menu was false advertising. Another table next to us also complained at the appalling portions. But we were also sadly shocked at the quality of the food. The gravy was instant granules, cold and incredibly lumpy. The potatoes were supposed to be beef dripping but were dry, bland and tasted like they had been cooked from frozen. The lamb on one of the plates was inedible. Unfortunately we have since seen several reviews saying the same thing (one stated that 2 slices of meat were a small portion, but clearly management thought this was too much, as they have reduced it further). To put it into further perspective, the child's roast (£9.25) was half a slice of meat smaller than the adults, how can they justify charging up to and over £10 more for half a slice of meat on an adult portion!! Aside from the food, the urinals were also leaking over the mens bathroom and had buckets underneath!! Please save your money, this is clearly a business that does not care about the customer.

Wine by the bottle very expensive around £46.50 for a bottle of Chardonnay. Wanted a glass of Chardonnay but unavailable by the glass. Asked for Pinot Grigio didn’t have any stock. Wine by the glass is very expensive for a 175ml glass of rose £11.95. They don’t do a 250ml glass of wine. Mains are expensive too for what you get. Most meals don’t come with vegetables so that’s an extra cost.

To start with, once again, under staffed so we had bad service, in fact as we were outside, nearly non existent. We gave up waiting to order our deserts having been told by the waitress she would return to take our order! No mint sauce, just a jelly, tasteless gravy, dry chicken with no stuffing, 2 small slithers of beef @ £24.00 - 20% fat, over cooked veg @ very small portion, BUT the roast potatoes were good! Such a shame. We think that there are so many other venues offering better value, especially when you see the wine list prices, the food needs to be far more superior and plentiful to justify their prices.

We went for dinner last night and will not be returning! We ordered the scallops for starters at 11 pound each and received what seemed to be 2 scallops cut in half, giving us 4 very thin slices of scallops with some chorizo scattered on top. Tasted good but the quality for the price was not acceptable in our opinion. I ordered the ragu which again was a rather small helping and personal preference found the pasta too hard still. My other half ordered the beef rib sharer plate which stated £30 per person. Maybe our mistake but we were then charged £60 for this! They knew we weren't sharing. Like I said, maybe it was us misinterpreting the price but nonetheless, the amount of meat that was on the plate WAS NOT enough for 2 people, let alone worthy of £60!! I suspect that when they knew he was having this alone they gave him less meat, and a large bone with no meat on it. He asked for it medium rare and it came, I'd say, more medium to well done. There were only 2 of us, and as I see also from another review, "optional" service charge was added to the bill at £14. We did not think to look before we left as we were so taken aback with the price! But as much as Service was quick, the pub wasn't that busy and I thought staff appeared grumpy. So for a bottle of wine, cocktail, 2 starters and 2 mains we paid £153 which we were shocked at, and I'll not be returning due to it NOT being value for money at all! Small portions and overpriced.

What a shame! Menus are filthy. Had the roast lamb and Belly Pork, lamb was very chewy and lacked flavour. Belly pork was nice. Roast potatoes had been sitting around for ages and tasted like they had been refried. They were very dry inside. Didn't bother complaining as it took ages for our drinks to arrive, then had to ask for a change to them and this then took 15 minutes. Which the food came when we asked again when are meals were delivered as they had forgotten. Menu says the lamb comes with mint sauce, had to ask for that. They clearly forgot again. By the time it did come the meal was cold. Asked for bill waited 15 to 20mins then went to the bar to pay. The top of the bar was strewn with dirty plates mostly with left over potatoes, someone was eating at the bar surrounded by them. Was very off putting. Service shocking, food definitely not worth the price. We went at 7pm, I am looking for excuses but there isn't any at all! Go if you have money to waste..

Unfortunately since it's renovation and new management The Exchequer has massively gone downhill. Our visit was for a family meal on Saturday night, we were welcomed and shown to our table and then things slowed down, the restaurant was full but only two waitresses on duty who received next to no help from their management, the two waitresses were pleasant but simply over worked. The food showed signs it could be good but where the staffing levels were not adequate for the number of customers food came out slowly and warm at best. Basics such as clearing the previous courses plates and providing cutlery for the next course didn't happen. It appeared that the food was sitting on the pass waiting to come out for some time as the presentation was great but the temperature when it hit the table let it down. The cocktails were fab when they eventually got to the table but the white wine was dropped at the table warm and no offer for the customer to check they were happy with the bottle and temperature. I hope things get back to how they used to be but currently worth avoiding with so many good eateries in the area.

New menu was disappointing. Under-cooked cauliflower and overcooked rare steak. Young staff polite and efficient but lacking in experience.

Disappointed that I didn’t even get the common courtesy of a response to my two emails to book for the locals evening! Checked my junk emails too. I went for a drink and found it very stark.

Visited for a spur-of-the-moment weekday lunch. Driven past many times, and now wish I'd been in before. Great food, attentive staff, a nice range of drinks. Will visit again.

I went along to the reopening of the pub after refurbishment. There wasn't a normal menu just canapes. These were nice but we were missed out on some of the rounds and still hungry when we left. Nice buzzy atmosphere, slow service but then it was v busy.

Brilliant Local Pub/ Restaurant. A lovely new look to our local restaurant and great service. A refreshing menu with a variety of specials to tempt the palette. Friendly service and always a warm welcome when you arrive.

We were out for a walk along the Basingstoke canal and stopped here for lunch. We immediately had a warm welcome and prompt service. French onion soup and crusty bread with Marmite butter - all really tasty and reasonably priced! Will definitely visit again and try some more of the menu which looked great.

Visited The Exchequer for Mother’s Day lunch. They managed to squeeze us in after a late request for a table, so was very grateful. Service was great throughout and food was amazing. We had lamb, pork and chicken roast dinners between us, plus chicken burger for my son. The onto the lovely pudding options. Can’t thank the staff enough and my mum loved her lunch. We both said we’d visit again separately, so wanted to say a big thank you and make a recommendation for others to go and try it as well.

AVOID. We went for a meal for Mother's day (10.03.23) here and based on very good reviews we thought this will be a nice treat for all of us. We booked a table and preordered food in advance. Upon arrival our table was not ready and we had to wait half an hour for it to be available. Whilst we waited, we were offered a free drink, which was appreciated. Once the table was finally free, we were sat down and waitress brought our nibbles after about 10-15 min from sitting us down, which we basically inhaled as were very hungry at that point. Once we finished, we were waiting another 15-20 min we were served our starters. After we finished eating starters and plates were cleared, we waited another 30 min for mains. After the plates were cleared after mains, again we waited another half hour for desserts, which at that point we did not enjoy anymore. I appreciate, that this is one of the busiest days in pub's calendar, but if we were asked to preorder our meals to avoid delays, not sure why then a lunch which should have taken an 1.5 hr max turned to 3 hour event. The wait inbetween meals was exhausting and no updates were given as to why food was delayed, other than sorry. Additionally, food was not the best, pork was uncooked in places, mushroom wellington was bland and dry. We paid full price for this and service charge. I would not recommend this place, food is not worth the money. And a day which should have been a nice familly gathering was spoilt and made us feeling very dissapointed.

Having arrived at 5.30 pm two of our party of 7 ordered monkfish which was off the menu. We ordered our starters, and only as they arrived they informed us that they had no scallops😱. Sadly being same person who wanted the monkfish, this was very poor. Portions very small. Nobody came and asked if we’d like more drinks. Ladies toilets one was blocked and flush broken, second toilet very difficult to get inside, and low on toilet paper. We will not return. We used to really love this restaurant, had it been busy we could understand, but very quiet at the time of our sitting. As a Mother’s Day celebration it was really poor. Finally when our bill arrived, we had been charged for the scallops that they did not have. 🤷‍♀️

Had a lovely Sunday roast here today, with family. Despite being really busy, the staff were very efficient and helpful. The sirloin of beef was cooked to perfection, medium rare, my husband had the roast lamb, which was equally well cooked, he also said he had some sort of shredded lamb served with it, which was extremely tasty, any chance of the recipe please?? 😊 the veggies were also well cooked, just right, I normally find they're normally practically raw in most restaurants but these were lovely and not crunchy.... A nice selection of desserts with some different things for a change...beware these are large!!!!. A lovely meal with family, and very well cooked, despite the pub being full. Doggy friendly (you wouldn't know our dog was there, he just lays under the table) Good size car park. Highly recommended!!!!

Very disappointing. We chose The Exchequer on a cold damp night because of its real fire and cosiness - no fire on, no radiators on either and a freezing draught coming up from the cellar. We just wanted two burgers, which we’d had before but did not want the house sauce or pickles and ordinary ketchup and mayonnaise. One burger arrived with pickles hidden under the lettuce, the other slathered in the house sauce which contains pickles. The waitress did bring a fresh bun and fresh salad to replace the one covered in house sauce, and just said sorry but she had noted it down on our order. The chips were not particularly hot and the burgers cooled quickly with the chilly temperature inside the restaurant. We asked for the bill and were shocked to see a service charge added too. The Exchequer is not what it was, and seems well over priced for what you actually get on your plate - we realised when we got home there were no crispy onions either which were on the description in the menu. Not somewhere to return to.

Been for Afternoon Tea today and was really pleased. Having been to lots of afternoon teas in various places this was one of the nicest. Sandwiches were very tasty and lots of them, the cakes were delicious and the scones were warm and came with plenty of cream. The staff were absolutely lovely and the pub itself was very welcoming. Will be back for a dinner next time!

Booked an afternoon tea for six to celebrate my birthday. The cakes and scones were very nice but the doorstep sandwiches with crusts on, cut in two and piled high on several plates were very disappointing and not at all like the photo on the website. Not sure what went wrong but won't be booking another tea.

Firstly the positive – the staff were friendly and accommodating. But sadly, now the negatives – although this pubs' website states "Our spacious patio area is ideal for soaking up some summer sun after a local dog walk", it did not mention that dogs are allowed in the restaurant area. I am allergic to dog hair and both my partner and I think it's unhygienic to have dogs around dining tables. There were so many of them on the day we visited it felt like we were having lunch in Crufts !!! Also, the food is VERY expensive for what is basically pub grub (over £120 for three meals with no starters, 2 cokes and two glasses of wine !). Our roasts were ok (although both the lamb and beef were not very tender) and we've had far better food that is less expensive elsewhere. We won't be returning.

We celebrated my daughter’s ’Baby shower’ here today with afternoon tea for 4 adults and the 3 children ate from the children’s menu. The whole experience was fantastic, The afternoon tea was really delicious: plenty of very tasty finger sandwiches; freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream and beautifully crafted miniature cakes. The tea and coffee supplies were indeed ‘bottomless’ and the children’s meals were generous, well priced and enjoyed. The staff were attentive and very helpful We have eaten many afternoon teas, as a family , and I must say that this one certainly rates amongst the best. The food was excellent and extremely good value. Thank you - we will definitely be back.

We were a party of 9 and arrived at 7 o’clock for our annual Christmas celebration The tables were wobbly, there was a spring sticking out of the base of one of the chairs and we had to ask for the christmas tree lights to be put on. Not a good start! On paper the menu looked good and price was in line with other local pubs. However… The main courses came with very little (if any) vegetables which came at a supplement of £4.50. The scallops starter was a £4 supplement and you were given 2. The cheese plate advertised for desert had only one type of cheese. The pub says that it caters for gluten free diets, so why were there no gluten free mince pies? The beef bourguignon was a surprise. I was expecting some sort of rich casserole. Instead I received quite a thick slice of fatty beef with a small amount of gravy. All of us who had this dish complained. The choux bun desert was equally disappointing. On the positive side, the staff were excellent and did their best to make good. We were compensated with a free bottle of wine, a couple of free deserts and my beef was exchanged. However I still feel that I left the pub wishing I had gone elsewhere for this Christmas meal. It was overpriced for what it was and that special evening with friends was marred. Next year I will look elsewhere.
