I visited on a Monday lunchtime and ordered a pie and regretably opted for roast potatoes. They had the taste of being previously cooked a long time beforehand and reheated (leftovers from previous Sunday's lunch maybe?). They were so hard they were very difficult to cut them. They were dreadful, totally unaccepatable for a chef to turn out this quality of cuisine, I shan't be returning

This is one of my Favorite Haunts. Con/Louise put on a 3 Course Greek Themed Meal on a Saturday Lunchtime for 33 Guests. The Event was for Charity. As always my only complaint was that the Portions were too large but very Tasty & wholesome. Everyone had a really enjoyable experience. The waitress's were Friendly, Bubbly & added to the Family Run Establishment. Louise kindly Donated a 3 Course Meal for 2 plus a Bottle of House Wine that was Auctioned.

Our booking by phone was effortless, and confirmed in a pleasant and professional manner. We arrived on time being welcomed on our entry and escorted to our table. The atmosphere is extremely pleasant, exactly as we expected from a wonderful old pub nestled in the Chiltern Hills, with log fire and pictures showing the local history giving you that warm feeling of times gone bye. The menu is just right not to long covering most favourite dishes, all involving local produce as expected. This included a good variety of local beers and a well stocked wine menu. The service was excellent delivered in good time with pleasant efficiency. We will definitely return very soon. A wonderful gesture at the entrance foyer boxes of local produce Sprouts, Carrots for any Senior Citizens to help themselves during these trying times. Thank you Graham & Kathleen Liggins

A Thursday evening and this typical country pub was heaving with a good natured crowd of locals which in itself says alot. Luckily we had booked a table for four in an adjacent dining room. The menu offered a choice of starters, main courses, a separate steak menu and desserts, The wine list whilst not extensive was balanced and outstanding value as was the food. The food was generous in quantity, excellent in quality and in short good honest pub grub. The steak and kidney pudding was outstanding, my chum had a ribeye steak and the ladies a very generous portion of grilled halibut each with a shared bowl of broccoli, peas and chunky chips. Service was informal, good humoured and efficient. Value was outstanding. Will we go again? Too right we will!

I booked The Hampden Arms for a post Christmas walk lunch with a group of 14 friends and could not recommend it highly enough. From the moment I first phoned to enquire as to whether they could accommodate us (a few weeks beforehand), Louise could not have been more helpful and welcoming and this was the same when we arrived yesterday. Louise brought the menus out to us when we arrived at 11am (before the walk) so that we could pre order which was really helpful and we were all really happy with the excellent food when we ate it a few hours later, after our walk. We had a slightly scary incident with one of our party suddenly fainting at the table whilst in the pub but Louise and her staff all dealt with it very professionally and sympathetically for which we were very grateful. Will definitely return and would very highly recommend.

Lovely warm pub, relaxing atmosphere... Disappointed with the Kleftico, it was very nicely cooked, but not as I had expected (quite British with gravy). It is made to the Cypriot recipe ... no additions. Unlike the Greek Kleftico, full of flavours culminating into the most delicious dish ...of lemons, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, oregano and wine. As we went there especially for this dish as special occasion... was disappointed.

We were a group of eight cyclists who used The Hampden Arms as a lunchtime stop on a two day cycling tour of the Chilterns. I had taken the precaution of booking ahead as I knew that many pubs are still emerging from lockdown, not offering food and maybe not accepting groups. The landlady couldn't have been more helpful and the food itself was superb. All of our party commented favourably on this! We were sat in the wonderful garden, so no issues with social distancing at a couple of the many well spaced out benches. It really was a lovely spot and we particularly appreciated the outdoor ordering and collection system for food and drinks. Hidden gem!!!I was recommended this place by a mate of mine, and I was told they have the best steaks in the area! However I didn’t fancy the steak, I had the venison, which was absolutely amazing and literally just fell part in my mouth. My Mrs has the mussels, I’m not a seafood fan but she had loads of them and loved them also. The starters were equally as good. Obviously, I’m a restaurant you slightly “rubber neck” and noticed the table next to us, they had one of the pies, and a mixed grill which was huge. Staff were fantastic and friendly and it was so nice sitting next a lovely warm wood burner and what has been a naff winter.I’ve eaten in some top end restaurants around the world and this place would happily sit up there with the best of them! I will definitely be going back.Oh, and reasonably priced to!

Popped after an 8k walk with Mrs M, on my birthday. After that walk we wanted decent wholesome food. We were made welcome and shown to our 'reserved' table (we had parked in the car park earlier and asked the chef if we needed to book for lunch). For some bizarre reason I wanted Scampi and Chips but it wasn't on the regular lunch menu. A glance to my right and there it was - on the specials board. That is also where the wide range of steaks are listed. The scampi was well cooked and the chips were perfect. But it's the little things isn't it? The coleslaw with the salad was homemade and really added to the dish. The chef (I now know to be Constantin) came out and wished us a happy lunch. It was a great birthday meal and we will be back for dinner one evening to try one of those promising steaks. Highly recommended!!

Sadly, there are increasingly few pubs like this one left in the Chilterns as the more traditional inns either close or get turned into chic but overpriced gastropubs. The Hampden Arms remains untouched, much as it must have been fifty years ago or even earlier. The atmosphere is great, the decor is full of quirky character, the welcome and the service are both good and the food and beer are not just decent quality but sensibly priced. I had a beautifully tasty pint of Addlestones Cloudy Cider and a big plate of ham, eggs and chips. Definitely one of my favourites in the area.

We have frequently eaten Sunday lunch at the Hampden Arms over the last few years and can't recommend it highly enough. Beer is always great which is a big thumbs up! Most importantly of all though, and why we love this place SO much, is the amazing welcome we always get from the Landlord (and Chef!), Constantine, and the lovely Landlady, Louise - always huge smiles and lots of banter, and those two in our opinion, tick every single box for the way they run their lovely country pub. We organised a walk around Great Hampden with a couple of friends and had booked the Hampden Arms for Lunch. We arrived around 1300hrs and were immediately made to feel welcome. The pub was cosy with fires going. We were given a lovely table and stared with nice Chiltern Brewery ale. The food choice was good but I was never so surprised at how fantastic the food actually was. I had the scallop starters which were to die for and the girls had the late. My wife is Coeliac and they had gluten free bread and a great choice for her to choose from. The chef personally came out to talk to her and advise what was in the food and what choices she could have. Great example of personal service. I ordered the steak, we also had the lemon sole and the festive turkey dinner. We did wait for a while but wow, was the wait worth it. The food was all freshly made, the steak and fish were superb and the festive turkey dinner was huge. We also had a big dish of 3 different veg plus another dish of roasted parsnips which was wonderful. Also really nice touches of a plate of breads with butter and Tapenade which was also lovely. It meant no room for the puddings which also looked good. Really great food for a good price. Lovely atmosphere and cosy so a really memorable lunch and would definately recommend this pub to everyone. Sunday lunch just before Christmas, so it was very busy, but the service was still excellent. Usual pub food, but with a few differences. I had tomato and red pepper risotto which was very tasty. They also did very reasonable children's meals. Definitely worth a return visit.

Called in for Monday lunch, not easy to find local pubs catering for lunch on Monday, and greeted by polite and helpful staff. Great menu choice, including breast of duck in redcurrant sauce, which was delicious. All our meals were obviously freshly cooked, and to very high standard of presentation This pub is hard to find, but well worth the effort.

A group of eight of us had a very nice meal following a lovely walk in the surrounding Chilterns. The service was excellent - and very amusing to boot! Great food and excellent value. Good all round!

This little gem is becoming increasingly busy. Lovely independant family run pub and restaurant. Menu varied with great fish. Fresh halibut was quality. Starter prawn and calamari with garlic Butter with a hint of chilli great. Best to book.

Ate here with family as a spontaneous birthday treat. Awful, the food was horrible I had a mixed grill that just tasted of liver. Will not be returning to this place again.

Came for lunch with my walking group, part way through a strenuous 10 mile walk. We got exactly what we needed. Tasty sandwiches and jacket potatoes and a good selection of beers and ciders, all served efficiently by friendly staff. There was special praise for the chips. The menu is relatively limited, without all the glitz of a gastropub. This is very definitely pub grub. The interior of the pub has hardly changed since I first came here almost fifty years ago as a volunteer pub inspector for CAMRA. Exactly what a local country pub should be.

Beer was a bit tired and the food was average. I had hoped for better Greek specialities, but the kleftico was a bit tough (with that reheated from frozen aspect), but it was a nice touch putting fresh thyme in the gravy it was served with,; almost brought it back to life!

Not many houses round about so how does the Hampden Arms get so busy? Because it's bang on! We booked a table for an evening meal because at lunchtime the place was rammed to the rafters. Really friendly staff, good menu for both carnivore and vegetarian, proper ales and ciders (some of it locally brewed) and the food itself was excellent. I couldn't drink too much as I was driving but next time I'm staying nearby I am going for a meal and a steady session.

My wife and I needed a good, not too expensive place to dine for four consecutive evening meals (including a Sunday, which always limits choice) while on business in the area. A search of the internet highlighted the Hampden Arms (British food with a Greek influence) as a serious contender. It came up trumps! Excellent, hearty food in a quirky, friendly environment. There was enough choice to enable us to dine well each evening, culminating in a choice of excellent roast dinners on the Sunday evening. I took the opportunity of inviting some friends as well on one of the evenings, again with a resounding seal of approval. After tiring days standing in a cold marquee it was good to know that a treat was awaiting us. We will be back next time we are in the area. Many thanks Louise and Constantine!

I live a short stumbling distance away from this chiltern gem, and I am very grateful for that fact. As a big foodie I love eating out and probably eat here once or twice a week on average. Try the garlic and chilli prawns as a main course - they are better than some of the best I have had in Spain or France, a heavy chilli kick and a lovely well seasoned garlic sauce ideal for mopping up with bread although check with your partner before ordering!! I took my Dad here a few weeks ago who ordered the sea bream. This is a man who eats out 10+ times a month all over the world and he said it was the best fish he had eaten in years. The steaks are also great, rib eye or chateau the best.Every dish is seasoned really well, they don't really need the salt and pepper on the tables. It's obvious the chef is clasically French trained and it shows in the food - generous portions, no pretentious rubbish or food served in buckets or trowels etc.Good selection of local beers and an interesting and affordable wine list.Basically, a great place. Visit!

I went to the Hampden Arms about 4 time last year with different friends. We all agree that the place has a proper friendly local atmosphere and that the food is good value, particularly the 3 course set menu and very tasty. Normally a good small selection of real ales and reasonably priced wine list. One of our favourite bucks pubs.

We visited on a Saturday lunchtime. Nice looking pub and the menu looked good. Service was really slow, we waited nearly no hour for our meal, and although the food was well cooked the language issuing from the kitchen was appalling. We won't be going back.

Small but cosy we managed to get six of us in for dinner recently. The menu is extensive (possibly too extensive for such a small place) although much of it seems to be prepared on the premises. Various choices seemed to go down well with the recipients, my choice of kleftico wasn't quite cooked through so not all the fat had been rendered, after cutting the fat off it still tasted OK. Desserts were OK too. The wine list was mundane and fairly short but the prices were very reasonable and they have a reasonable selection by the glass. Service was efficient enough, if a little distant. For those who bemoan the loss of a traditional pub to a restaurant this will suit you as they keep a small selection of decent beers and the drinkers seemed happy enough.
