We ate here mid week and I must say the food was amazing, I highly recommend a visit, very friendly staff, good to see Ben back, he has been very much missed, always smiling, a great atmosphere restored 👌

Really welcoming and cosy little pub, the bar staff are smartly dressed, and super chatty and personable especially Julie who was chatting away to everyone inside and ALWAYS smiling, also seeing people to the door on their way out which is a lovely touch! We had snacky bar food which came out really quickly actually, and was lovely!

I had a wonderful lunch with a friend today at this charming local pub. It’s a real gem, offering delicious food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I opted for the pan-fried white fish from their healthy options menu, and it was absolutely delightful. My friend had ham, egg and chips which looked equally tempting. Julie and David provided exceptional service, making us feel right at home. In winter, the pub boasts a cozy roaring fire, while in summer, the large, secure garden is perfect for children and dogs to enjoy. I highly recommend a visit!

Very disappointing food service tonight at the Black Lion, a pub that we often happily visit when seeing family who live in the area. We ordered food as soon as the kitchen opened and after checking with the bar staff, were assured that our table of 7 would be served at the same time. We ordered 7 meals and 2 starters; including one ham and mushroom pizza. 30 minutes after ordering we are informed there was no ham for the pizza. One starter came after 10 minutes, followed by two meals about 10 minutes later. These had been eaten by the two diners and 20 minutes passed before another 3 meals came out. It was over one hour after we ordered that the final meals came out, with the final starter being delivered as the final item. During this period, it was not busy and no one else was eating food in the pub. Our meals were also missing items and were cold. Very little way of communication of timings or apology was given by staff. After this disappointing service happened, I communicated to the staff member how long we had been waiting and he let us know that there was only one person working in the kitchen. While I understand that short staffing happens, we were at no time communicated with that this would be the case, and in fact were assured that the food would be delivered at the same time. Only after communicating our disappointment were we offered a free drink. However, we spent so long waiting for food that we had to leave. I would have appreciated them offering to refund our meal or at least some of it, as this spoiled our lovely family meal.

Popped into the Black Lion with friends, great to see Ben back, he has been missed. Great atmosphere and service. Highly recommended.

We live in a village with an embarrassment of quality eateries. For fifty odd years, we have suffered the cuisine afforded when visiting Hughenden Valley. Since I found it necessary to complain about a cube of indistinguishable meat topped with a pad of mash in a ramakin and advertised as 'venison pie' (they will know who they are), I feel it only right to give credit where due... 29-Dec-24 14:30 You gave we six the absolute best meal. Great Xmas dinner options and I had the lamb that was excellent. Friendly service and Julie was a star looking after us. Highly recommended at any time of year.

I was here for a works Xmas lunch. The Xmas menu has great options. Everyone's meals were fantastic. Julie was our waitress and she was so lovely and catered for all our needs. Full table service was lovely. The Black Lion never fails to deliver our Xmas meals. Lovely atmosphere and service with yummy food.

It was our 2nd visit for Sunday lunch, and again, we were very impressed. The food is delicious, reasonably priced, generous portions with a good variety of vegetables and, if required, plenty of extra gravy. The staff are extremely friendly and the service excellent. Give it a try, 10 out of 10!

Joined friends for a Sunday lunch. Ordered the full house house sunday lunch. Disappointed - the beef was not cooked, raw (not rare) in the middle,even the outside of the beef was not cooked. Everything on the plate was cold with the exception of the roast potatoes which were warm. Insufficient vegtables between guests. Not worth the money.

Second time here, it's a fantastic place with food that is amazing. Such a gem of a place. Attention to allergies was brilliant 👏 will definitely return.

Nice food, quiet, dog-friendly pub, with a covered smoking/vaping area outside and what would have been a nice outdoor area for drinking and eating, if the weather hadn’t been apocalyptically wet. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Would recommend for anyone in the local area. Be a little careful of the low ceiling by the bar for taller patrons, but the roof opens up nicely towards the back in the restaurant area.

Took my family for a Sunday lunch and have to say it was the best roast I have had in a Long time. Could not fault it and got the black lion Full house. Will 100 % be back for another. Thank you loved it

On a trip down memory lane, popped into The Black Lion as it was a local for my parents from yrs ago, had a beautiful lunch served by Julie, she was so nice and helpful, very friendly and a credit to the pub! The place is very welcoming and has changed quite a bit but still evokes lovely memories 😀

We had been walking, and had booked a table for lunch. It was excellent - first class pub grub, friendly service, and great beer. What more could you want? We'll be back.

Fantastic meal last night. Steak was delicious and huge! Good choice of sauces to go with the steak, peppercorn etc were equally delicious and generous portions. Service was excellent too. Will definitely go back for more!!!! Excellent value for money.

Food was SUPERB, hot tasty , great chips, lovely cooked cold ham , plenty of food - great salad dressing too . Gave three stars for atmosphere as it was very quiet which is a shame as food faultless . Will go back ! Great wine nicely priced

Came along for a few drinks, there was a private party going on but the staff were amazing. They were busy but very efficient and the service was fantastic! Ben, (I think the landlord) was great, remembering our drinks and super helpful and friendly. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends!

The food was tasty and everyone enjoyed their meals and drinks! Portions are decent too and the Sunday roasts are a winner! We will definitely be visiting again as this is our new local. I took a large group of friends for the £10 Fish and Chips lunch on 'Fish Friday' - slightly nervous as there was a time when this pub had a less than favourable reputation. BUT how it has changed!! The food was fantastic and beautifully presented. Julie (the lady in charge that day) was delightful - nothing was too much trouble and lunch was so enjoyable that I went back for the Sunday roast with another group of friends. I have no hesitation in recommending this pub which is now top of my list for delicious food at a great price with lovely service.

I have lived in Naphill for 22 years, The Black was never my local, due to previous owners/landlords. I have to say the new Manager, Ben, makes you feel very welcome. Such a friendly place. I now come a few nights a week.

Went with a party from W.I.for a fish and chip lunch. Were made very welcome by Julie with plenty of laughter and a lovely lunch. Would recommend this pub/restaurant to anyone.

Went for lunch today with ladies from our W.I. And had a great time. We were made to feel so welcome by Julie who quickly got us organised so we could each have individual bills when we finished. The food was delicious and plenty of it. We all left feeling very full and decided we couldn’t have chosen anywhere better.

We went for dinner on Valentine's Day - the food was excellent. Opted for the Chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection. All the portions were generous. Staff were attentive and friendly. Such a shame that there weren't more people there!! This place deserves to be busier.

Visited the Black Lion Pub on Wednesday and received a very warm welcome with good service and good food.

We went to the Black Lion in Naphill Sunday for a Sunday roast. Good selection of food, starters main and dessert. The service was efficient, fast and pleasant. I have gluten intolerance but found plenty of choices. I had chicken supreme. Nice tasty portion of chicken, vegetables and both gravy and Yorkshire pudding were gluten free. There were two choices of GF desserts. I had sticky toffee pudding... delicious. The price was excellent. The area is really nice. Plenty of walks (when the weather is warmer!). I really recommend a visit.

Had the senior lunch today .Great value and the food was excellent .Unfortunately i did not get the ladys name that served us. She was so friendly and helpful. The place was spotless clean we would highly recommend it. We will definitely be back

A great spot and really welcoming staff! We popped in for a couple of drinks one cold evening and were immediately impressed. Cosy, modern and clean - just what was needed! Cracking pub with excellent food and service in a great location. The food is a cut above regular pub food as it is cooked by a proper qualified chef, but the prices are very reasonable, reflecting the relaxed atmosphere of the pub. Standout dishes are the Chicken Supreme with Roast Potatoes & Wild Mushroom Sauce, Seafood Linguini along with many others, including good quality versions of pub classics. Beer is usually Rebellion IPA and one other. They have a safe, large garden for good weather and Naphill Common/Bradenham Woods are on the doorstep. It is easily accessible, being on the 300 bus route.

We enjoyed a great lunch, food was excellent and very generous, the staff were so friendly and helpful. As a group of eight we will be back again in January for another family catch up - thanks Black Lion :)

Went for a nice meal and quiz with the family. The staff were lovely and accommodating. Food was 10/10. All service received was great. The only hitch was towards the end of the evening when a couple went into the female toilets together. They were in there for quite some time. And not long after this all of us that saw them walk in quickly realised they were having a shag. “Dogging” (as my daughter-in-law would put it). Would be a solid 5 star rating overall if it weren’t for the dirty couple.

First real English meal and what an impressive beginning to the trip! Service was so friendly and efficient in a relaxing and casual ambiance. The dishes we got were sooo hearty and reminded us of comfort food. REBELLION BEER BATTERED FISH AND CHUNKY CHIPS Crispy layer of beer batter with just enough salt and pepper to go with the tender bite of fish. The chunky chips were crispy on the outside and had a bite similar to mashed potatoes, so delicious. The lemon tartar sauce went very nicely with it. That fresh squeeze of lemon juice over everything was just Chef’s Kiss. SLOW ROASTED LAMB RUMP The lamb was roasted for six hours in red wine and shallots for a delicately, earthy flavor. The meat just melted in your mouth with every forkful. The lamb was served on a tasty bed of fluffy, garlic mashed potatoes. The red wine sauce drizzled on complimented everything perfectly. RIBEYE STEAK Classic steak done right with all the right searing and flavoring. Every bite was juicy and delicious. The roasted vine tomatoes were a great touch. The fries were done English style, so tasty. All I can say is: so English and so damn good.

The pub opened especially for us, and the Christmas lunch was delicious. The smoked salmon parcel with cream cheese was perfect, as was the moist, tasty turkey, trimmings and vegetables. Julie and Will went above and beyond to serve us (a party of 37), unfailingly cheerful and helpful. I highly recommend the Black Lion and I will be back.

Took a short evening trip to the Black Lion. Were visiting from Germany. We really liked it. There is a large selection of drinks, very nice staff. There was a live band playing that evening and they were great.

Beautiful pub with lovely food. If where ever in the area again we will return. Small car park, so get there early. We enjoyed a meat Sunday dinner for £19.95. All fresh ingredients and no frozen veg! Highly recommend.

I have been here a few times now, and the service by the staff is always best, and the food is even better! definitely get the portion sizes for your money.

I never leave reviews via google but had to share…. I haven’t been to this pub in at least a couple of years, was not a great experience (both service and food) BUT had family from Canada visiting - it was local for us so decided to check out the the menu, get a drink and decide whether to stay or go . I am so happy I did. It’s back and dare I say better than ever!!!!!! Under new management the staff were prompt, friendly and knowledgable. The food (we went today - Sunday) was amazing! One of us had the beef roast (said it was so tender), two had sausage and mash, and I had a burger, it was delicious! Couldn’t be more thrilled, down the street, dog friendly, and back to a little local gem! If you haven’t been under new management - please give it another go! We’ll for sure be repeat customers, only sad we hadn’t tried it again sooner! Well done guys!

Took a new born here in a desperate attempt to give the wife time to nap back at home. Landlady could not have been nicer. There's a sort of summer house in the beer garden which allows you to still outside and entertain aforementioned screaming...

Thank goodness there is one venue in the area that knows the meaning of customer service. Took French friends there and we placed our order in advance and it was served to us 10 minutes after our arrival. Staff always helpful, friendly and pleasant.

Poor inexperienced service, food very average and not very reasonable. Such a pity, as this used to be such a great pub.

Haven't been here for a year, very disappointed with the service and food. Not sure if there's a new management team in, but I won't be rushing back. Shame.

Just had dinner here for Mother’s Day normally the food is nice however our table was half an hour late and food took over an hour to get to us. Roast potatoes were hard only a dribble of gravy and chicken was rubbery. Normally the pub is quite however I feel they tried booking to many in to make up there shortfall and unfortunately this had a knock on effect with food and service.overall very disappointing
