Princes Fish & Chip Shop in Wycombe

When I first went here in 2015 the 'large chips' was actually large and the food tastes nice too. After Covid and the energy crisis things have done downhill. Portion sizes have been cut and the quality has gone - a lot of the chips themselves are small dried out pieces - and the prices are now way way too high for what it is. The place has gone downhill massively which is a real shame. It's the only chip shop in town with a captive audience of pensioners without cars but... If you drive to the chip shop in Thame, then you get far more chips - at least twice as many and they are better and nicer (and cheaper) . I actually took a photo of the the chips at both places to compare and contrast because this has become annoying. I hope the owner sees this because I would like things to improve. I don't want the place to shut - but I don't think mediocrity should be rewarded either. If things turn around then I will remove or edit this.

The portions are very small indeed compared to all other local fish and chip shops. We ordered a large cod and chips with mushy peas and it came to £14. Whilst the food was average, the value for money is poor so we won’t be returning. Thame fish and chips shops and the Howe and Co vans are far better quality and value for money.

Just had the best two pieces if fish! Super tender fish and very light and crispy batter. We're sat in the park eating it. Our one year old is loving the fish too! Many thanks!

Our local chippy is pricey but worth it - Best tasting chips around! We’ve been coming here about once a month for the past two years and the taste is always a notch above the rest

Sometimes the fish and chips here are excellent but sometimes below average, not sure why.. very popular so expect a que and difficult to park near at times, nice staff.

My local chippy was closed so I thought I'd give this one a try. Firstly, It's expensive, secondly the staff are really not interested, and last but not least the portion sizes are ridiculous. I asked for small cod and a portion of large chips. There was only one size of cod which I thought, "Okay I can deal with that" They proceeded to put both fish and chips in a box together of which I asked can they be separate, this is not an unreasonable request as given that I'd ordered large chips these were to be shared. The member of staff looked down his nose at me and then said I have to pay extra for another box to put the chips in!!! When the chips were served I queried if it was a large portion as it was that bad I had to order another small portion otherwise there wouldn't have been enough to share around. As for the fish, there was at least three inches of just batter alone so even though it looked a decent size, the fish content was lacking. Bottom line is I won't be going back there, If I can't go to my local chippy I'll go into Thame instead and try one there. Avoid....

It’s a shame how bad this place is gone it use to be pretty good to, now the portions are half what they used to be the price has gone up and the quality now is awful, can’t see them staying in business for much longer

A young woman who was working there today made it very clear she didn’t have any loyalty to her employers. My daughter who is poorly answered a question quietly and the assistant responded by tutting, rolling her eyes and slamming the chip boxes boxes down. I couldn’t believe a grown adult acting like that in front of a child. It’s usually poor quality and grumpy service, sort of what I think people just expect, but ok if you are really hungry type place, but this was a new level.

food good friendly staff .not sure of the one size cod but that's my opinion. There is. Now there is a fish and chip van from another company that comes in to risborough have to say they do portion and you can see your getting large fish ,

Three of us had cod and chips this evening, from Princes in Risborough. It was delicious! Absolutely lovey! Very hot, lovely and crispy batter on the fish, and the chips too were super-made from smaller new potatoes, they were really tasty! Highly recommended! Sorry-no photos-we ate it all!!

Deliciously light and crispy batter on the cod, not oily at all and good size. The scampi was tasty with chunky pieces. Large chips was plenty for the two of us and not soggy. Nice curry sauce too for the chips. £20.20 all in

Food is nice, but, expensive, £7 for scampi, this is £5.45 in Wendover. In Wendover scampi and large chips is £9, Princes Risborough is nearer to £11, not sure if that is because of the ambience (see below). You pay for a large chips which then get shoved in the box with your food, so not large at all. Majority of the staff are either very depressed, deeply unhappy or just unaware of how to smile. But, this place is always busy, so maybe it's just my expectations.

Always disappointing. It's a shame because it's great to have a local chippy but complacency has clearly set it. Fish portions are pathetic, don't even do a large option. Chips are frequently undercooked and insipid. We even asked if they could make sure they were crispy and probably got the most soggy chips we've ever had there. Regularly mess up orders as well..got curry sauce instead of mushy peas this time. Sick of being disappointed so shall be going to other chippys for the foreseeable.

Been a regular customer since 1976 but recent change is not good. I ordered two cod and a regular chips, they normally split the chips between the two cod portions but the new guy got really rude with the server saying this was not allowed now - 'if the customer wants the chips split they can do it themselves' completely ignoring me standing there. She looked really embarrassed. They have been doing this split for e for years. I felt uncomfortable and he watched over her shoulder as she put the chips in the box saying 'only two scoops' but the scoops were only partially full. They are also very expensive compared to the Thame shops where you can get two cod and two portions of chips for £12 (with 2 cans of drink) compared to £18.50. The fish was freshly cooked but served straight away so the fat seeped through the box before I got to the car and it marked my jacket. I shall not be back.

Gone down hill - and today i stood there for 15 mins with person in front of me - i wanted fish which was slowly decaying away in the heat unit - i waited and waited - not a word said - i then walked out. I gave them a second chance 3 months on, got served - Wish I hadn’t as the fish was 90% batter and pretty awful. Goodbye Princes, £18 wasted.

These have really gone down hill, the portions are about half the size now as they we’r last year and they cost more now, I actually seen one of the girls working there counting how many chips she put in the box 🤷‍♂️I mean come on really?

Battered sausage and chips - sausage barely had any batter on and didn't taste cooked. Chips had lots of black bits. Staff not particularly interested and offhand. Won't be going again.

Camping nearby and wanted a Take-away. Despite being a Sat note and very busy the staff were great. Nice menu and very fair prices. My cod was freshly cooked and a lovely size & not too much batter. Chips good also with a big portion.

Love this chippy we come all the way from middx .must admit tho the fish was a bit on the small side so wont be goin back for a while .I think they tried this before and had to go back to normal size cod .still a nice chippy tho

The atmosphere at this shop is terrible. Staff get treated badly and the fryer is extremely grumpy - also getting upset when you have a special request like dietary requirements. No love in this business. Peas and beans taste like they’re being reused and portions are small compared to other places with the same price. Overall unhappy

They have started to take customers for granted for many years I have traveled 15 miles to give them custom. However, they are hostile to special request. Hostile in their body language. And really don’t seem to give a toss. Won’t be going back!!!

Use to be a amazing but now change

It used to be really good but gone down hill as fish has too much batter on it which is very hard and the last couple of times dripping in fat which isn't nice. And service not as good young boys working in shop and they don't pay attention to what you say. We used to go a lot but only twice in last few months and this time only to see if it had improved which it hasn't and not only is food not great the potions are tiny the smallest piece of fish and half a dozon chips is not fish and chips to me. And its got very expensive.

Good prompt service at 6pm Saturday night. Batter was crispy, fish delicious and chips were perfect. Nothing soggy or over greasy, so couldn’t fault it. Great to eat out of a box, and able to recycle everything. Thanks

Very pricey, paid for a large chips £3.90 but the box was tiny, smaller then a DVD case........chips were very nice but there needs to be more of them or they need to charge less.

Still unfriendly staff but this time we were both ill after because the fish had a very hard leathery batter indicating that it had been recooked. ( Also the excess chip oil ran out from the corner of its box onto my car seat ! )

Price has gone up, you now get smaller fish portions and fewer chips. Will still use the shop but not as often.

Shockingly expensive! Not in my travels up and down the country have I seen so small portion of a regular bag of chips for an average price. I thought I was going to get the usual amount but was I surprised. I said wow this is very small, they said that's how much portion it is! Wow, The first ever.

Not as good as it used to be. Not as good as Churchill's in Hazlemere for quality or quantity. But it's alright

Lovely fresh fish n chips and was served pretty quickly despite the Saturday night queue. Nice kids meal, friendly staff and great curry sauce too.

Consistently excellent food at Princes with all the usual fish & chip shop favourites served by an efficient and friendly team. My go-to takeaway in the local area.

I stood in front of the till waiting to be served while staff parcelled up orders - no glance, nod or smile to acknowledge that I was there. I walked out after 15 minutes without ordering, disgusted and ashamed that a local company has invested so little in training their staff in customer service. We ended up with a warm welcome and lovely meal a few minutes later from the chippy in the next village and will go there in future. Staff - I'd encourage you to go elsewhere too - there are more caring employers.

For the last year I have been using this fish shop on and off as I live in Wembley and travel out to the Chilterns for walks at a weekend mostly. Having taken a weeks leave i used Princes yesterday after a good 4 hour ridge way trek. It had been around a month since my last visit and I initially got excited about this establishment as I was convinced they were using a beef dripping / oil mix for frying which imparted a lovely flavor into the chips and batter. The initial few visits were very enjoyable and with glee I would happily extend the drive from Chequers across to Princes Risborough just for the fish and chips. I even went as far as to give them a call to try to discover if they did in fact use some kind of dripping/oil blend to achieve the lovely flavor. After speaking to presumably the owner it turned out they were using Palm Oil. Unfortunately not long after making that call it would seems as though the frying medium has changed as the flavor and texture of the chips in particular doesn't appear to be the same. Cant say that I am enjoying them as the chips particularly seem pallid in complexion and extremely soft to mushy in texture. It was around 5pm when I paid my last visit and a 'fresh' haddock was put on at my request. The fish had a very watery appearance, almost uncooked appearance and a slight ammonia taste. I would suggest that it was a less than fresh piece of fish which may have endured defrosting and refreezing at some point in its voyage. I NEVER leave fish uneaten, even at some of the most average establishments I've visited over the years, but on this occasion I decided not to risk it. Under normal circumstances I would have marched back to the shop and demanded an explanation and money back but as I was very relaxed after a lovely walk I could not bring myself to bother. I did not think that the youngsters who appear left to run the place would necessarily give a toss, so instead resigned myself to not using it again. What a shame, thought I was onto a winner there. On average I must have been spending at least £40 a month there over the last year or so. If I were running the place I would put an adult in charge, change the oil back to the palm oil product (higher burn point ensuring crisper chips and batter and less oil absorption) as it tasted great in my opinion, and probably look at your fish supplier and use actual salt and vinegar rather than the cheaper condiment alternative which just tastes chemically and artificial. Horrendous stuff.

Today staff are wearing their masks hanging from one ear apart from two who show no signs of any mask. Two girls in their teens (no jab - spreaders?) go in without maks and order chips, another woman goes in - no mask. There is a box of masks on the counter but none of them are asked to put one on. The staff are cooking and serving food - with no mask. If you are voulnerable, you are taking your life in your hands. They are new staff - the fish tasted good but was loaded with oil which soaked through SIX napkins. Not going back ! Sanitiser was available but - not used.

Could not fault it nice uality, service and price! Taste as good as any good fish and chips I have had.

We have treated ourselves to takeaway fish and chips a couple of times recently and they were first class. Be prepared for a wait as the queue was about 20 people and the wait was circa 30 minutes but it was worth it. Very well cooked, good portions and very enjoyable.

Hi, twice now we have had fish and chips which has been laying around for ages. When the fish is cooked freshly it is really good but when it has been out for a while it is not particularly hot and is greasy. Also why does the woman who bags the food NOT WEAR A MASK. Is this not illegal.

Week before Xmas i visited 3 times having 2 cod and 1 medium chips and paid £12.50. The chips came in the same size box as the fish. Today I ordered the same as i have done for years (been using this fish & chip shop since 1976!). They gave me a half size box of chips. When i queried this i was told they only did regular or large and they had given me a regular (1/2 size) for the same price as the pre Xmas 'large' chips. As they were serving at the door you could not see the price list. I could understand the different size portion if the price had changed but the £12.50 remained unchanged.I did not get any response from the staff when i said i had paid £12.50 on many previous occasions and had been given the larger box. Shame, although we moved away about 15 years ago, we still have a weekly fish & chips. Sadly, we will now be t6rying the fish and chip shop closer to home.

I usually pop down on a Tuesday night and both the food and service is excellent.The fish and chips are the best I’ve tried and I love the fact that they do a really nice Veggie (every family seems to have one these days!) option too with the halloumi sticks.

The food quality is good but very concerned that the young lady serving does not ware a face mask. Also on the 3rd visit two builders in the shop also not waring face masks. Surely this is dangerous and puts others at risk.

Within 2 minutes the batter was wet and stuck to the box, curry sauce not nice, chips not fresh....for these prices it should be a lot better

We have had takeaway fish and chips a few times during during lockdown because they are first class and secondly it is important to support local businesses during these difficult times or they will be lost for ever. The fish and the chips are always perfectly cooked and taste delicious. Well worth the journey into town.

Friendly service and following distancing guidelines with good food

Princes are a great fish and chip take away, batter is always crispy, chips aren’t too greasy and the kids meals are extremely good value. Service is always fast and friendly - a great local take away, highly recommend.

Had takeaway from here during COVID19 pandemic, social distancing was well observed, wipes and hand sanitiser were available for customer useage. I personally love the fish from here, always a generous portion size and well cooked. I hadn't visited in a while but I was glad to do so and will again soon.

After a mornings work we decided on a whim to get Fish and Chips. Not used PrincesFish & Chip Shop for a while but we’re really pleased with our meals. Really good, crispy batter on both fish and sausages and fantastic chips.

I once heard a fish shop owner say "if you see a queue outside a fish and chip shop join it!" Well on a Friday and Saturday night there is almost always a queue at this really good take-away restaurant. They have an extended menu offering something for everyone - including lunchtime specials and a kid's menu. All the food is excellent and the service is usually above par.Locals in the know drive quite a distance to get the best fish suppers - we have never been disappointed.The shop has just gone through a re-fit and it looking clean and professional, still serving the best fish and chips for miles around.

Cannot fault the fish. Fresh, cooked to perfection and very tasty. Chips can be a little iffy on occasion but generally not too bad and reasonable value too.

The problem with this chippy is when they’re busy and the food is freshly cooked it’s great, but choose a quiet time and they serve up all the dried up chips and crisped up fish at full price that should be binned. The only chippy in Risborough that trades on it’s monopoly. Don’t use Except busy times between 5-7pm otherwise your taking potluck of poor quality food. ======================================================== UPDATE: I am very pleased to say that Princes Chippy @ Princes Risborough have responded to negative reviews and have now what appears to be a new policy of cooking smaller amounts and subsequently that means that there could be a short wait for freshly cooked fish & chips. I consider this a plus to receive a freshly cooked meal and I applaud them for listening to it's customers. I hope they keep it up? My score increased from 2 stars to 4

Visited here a couple of times while working in the area very small portion sizes and expensive, staff very arrogant and look very young would rather travel a couple of miles to smarts in Thame better portion size and better quality of food
