The Hambrough Restaurant in Isle of Wight

Having eaten here 2 nights. The food standard was excellent both nights. The ambience in the restaurant would be better with more clients. The service on both evenings was attentive without being intrusive.. The trout small plate was delightful in taste and presentation. The lamb and duck dishes were cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. Both dishes were well balanced and filling. The cod dish was very filling and an unusual presentation of cod and crab. The meal was complete with great champagne and wine without a need for a pudding! Compliments to the kitchen brigade and waiting staff

We had lunch here using the October special offer. The food was superb, cooking of the highest standard and interesting and creative dishes. The staff are all delightful and an example of how it should be done. I am amazed but delighted that we could have a lunch of this high quality at such a reasonable price, especially compared with expensive a disappointing venus we have recently eaten in on the mainland

Excellent, top quality vegetarian meal

Just arrived in Ventnor not knowing one restaurant from another. It was listed as one of the better places to eat at by our AirBnB, so we gave it a try. Clearly an old establishment which had been modernised, we were immediately greeted on arrival, shown to the bar for a drink before dinner and in our own time taken into the restaurant. The food was excellent quality and the service tip-top. The serving staff were always there when you wanted them without being overpowering - a lesson in customer service many restaurants could learn from.

The menu outside was not same as the one we were given in the restaurant, which in fact was more interesting. The food was excellent. Service a little slow but that meant we could savour the food more.

We enjoyed a selection of food from a varied and exciting menu all the while served by very attentive and kind staff as we overlooked the sea. This was food created by a talented chef who put so much thought and effort into both presentation and taste with complementing flavours and textures. Highly recommend the experience!

We enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea with our friends as a birthday treat, and have now been fortunate to have experienced lunch, afternoon tea and dinner at the Hambrough. We very much enjoy the location, great service and, of course, the excellent food and drinks available.

Excellent base for exploring southern coast line, Breakfast was excellent and set you up for the day. Quiet but fortunate we were there for Carnival week so got to enjoy the procession and fireworks. Staff all friendly and very helpful with local information.

Have been wanting to visit for a while and certainly didn’t disappoint . Excellent interesting menu choice , food fresh , local , perfectly cooked and well presented . The staff were very good and attentive . We also thought it was good value . We’ll certainly return .

I've had the best time of my life.

The restaurant is rather old-fashioned and gaudily decorated, but we were made welcome. We had a drink in the bar, which has lovely views. I had a cocktail but my partners 0% beer was not available so a replacement was suggested. The bottle of wine we asked for to accompany the food was also unavailable so I chose a glass of something else and my partner, a Campari and soda and a large bottle of sparkling water. Once seated in the dining room the wrong drinks were brought, followed by my wine , the Campari and eventually, the sparkling water. No soda ever made an appearance except on the bill. A choux pastry amuse-bouche came and was tasty, as was the bread. Starters were good; I had the pressed watermelon and my partner, a tiny cheesy puff-pastry tart. For mains I had the duck; my partner the cured ibérico pork tenderloin. Both were so tender I wondered whether sous-vide was used, as both lacked “finish”. The kitchen clearly has what I regard as a chemistry set, producing tiny cubes of champagne jelly, too small to either taste or pick up with cutlery. The service was eccentric, which we found amusing but others might not. The waitress’ stock response to any comment was “No worries”. I wish she had worried a bit more, frankly. Has potential but needs a lot more attention to detail.

Disappointing start to the stay when the hotel had run out of hot water so couldn't freshen up. Then, I also found the cold water tap broken in the bathroom and the shower tiling not finished off. The room over all felt a bit tired with marks all over the walls, the lamp shade covered in dust, no biscuits with the tea ( always a personal gripe of mine) if.you use the coffee machines make sure you take the coffee off the top of the machine, we clearly weren't the first to send them flying by the stash under the cabinet, either that or they have secret coffee loving gremlins hording it? The food was very pleasant, but don't expect the large portion of food to be large, it was average for this type of dining. My breakfast was enjoyable, but my wife had the veg full english, and the hash browns were so over fried that they were inedible. The problem is when you stay at a chain that costs less and you get an excellent presented room when you pay more money, well you expect more?! Staff were very helpful and did offer a modest discount for the disappointment.

My wife and I booked to have lunch here, taking advantage of 'The Price Is Wight' offer. And we are really glad we did. It's an absolute gem!! The food is excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.

This is a lovely place for afternoon tea. The food was beautifully presented and served. It was delicious too. We had a window table compete with a sea view.What more could we ask? Would really recommend this hotel .

Great setting, friendly and helpful staff, good food and comfortable room.

Very disappointed with our room no 3 which was tired and in need of some updating. A kitchen extractor outside the window was noisy all night. Not especially clean and the service at the weekend breakfast very poor and inefficient. Definitely not worth the money and nothing like the pictures on the website.

We stayed this bank hol weekend may 2024 The hotel location was phenomenal- beautiful views ideal location. The rooms were also really nice - we were in studio room 2 as it was us two adults and our two children so was plenty of Space and balcony with views Room 7 was for our other family members which wasn’t a patch on ours as was small and slightly tired decor. A few improvement pointers would be 1) to be more generous with towel changing and with the milk supply in the fridge aswell as the shampoos/ shower gel supply We had 4 of us in the room and shared 2 big towels between us all 2) breakfast was a nightmare both days First day was accidental but the waitress rested the tray of juices half on the table so they fell and smashed - accidents happen but from then on the service delivery was rushed and not given with any grace or professionalism. They often rushed off before you’d finished ordering or got things down on the table too quickly 3) another pointer was the kitchen was open and only round the corner from the dining area so we could over hear conversations the staff were having that made it feel not professional As they would say they didn’t have enough bowls/ discussing problems etc More staff training to level it up to 5 star is a helpful idea Also The door handle locking system on room 2 needs fixing as without knowing u have to lift the door up slightly it was impossible to lock/ unlock Having said this the location speaks for itself and the rooms Once a few pointers are ironed out it would match up with it’s 5 star rating But was much more similar to 4 star bed and breakfast hotels

After a slightly slow start with welcome, first drink and menu discussion, I have to say that this was the best meal that I have had in a while. Beautifully presented with friendly and positive staff. From the home made sourdough focaccia which was moist, crumpet like flavour, to the interesting starters really well presented and so tasty, to the amazingly cooked mains including lamb, duck, cod (just wow) all presented unusually but beautifully and the deserts… the pistachio ice cream like no other I have had. £80 a head including cocktails and wine… I’m still thinking about every mouthful, thank you to our maitre d’ and our lovely waitress, our special celebration for an 80th birthday made very special by you and the chef. Highly recommended.

We booked a Room at The Hambrough and ate at the Restaurant. The whole stay was excellent and the Restaurant was exceptional, both in the friendly atmosphere, the efficient waiter service and the quality of the meals. The management has clearly taken a pride in running the restaurant to such a high standard.

We recently stayed at The Hambrough for the weekend. Such a gorgeous hotel with amazing views and lovely, friendly staff. We had dinner on one of the nights - it was amazing. Fine dining at its best and super attentive staff. The breakfast is also wondeful. We will definitely be back.

We've been patrons of the Hamborough restaurant for more than 20 years. Last night was our first visit with the new chef Curtis in charge of the kitchen. We were absolutely delighted. His predecessor was excellent but the new chef is young and enthusiastic and motivated to set the bar even higher. We think the food experience now is at Michelin one star level. The venue, with sea view, has always been superb and the dining room sufficiently intimate not to feel crowded even when full. Geo, the maitre d' provides a welcoming and avuncular encouragement both to pursue the wine selctions but also just to enjoy the whole experience. We are 'foodies', and really appreciated the variety of choices and attention to detail in the items on the menu. We heartily recommend the experiecne and will be going back in the near future!

What a wonderful evening we enjoyed at the Hambrough. Gio, the manager, could not have given us a warmer welcome or friendlier service. From the start he talked about the food and wine with great enthusiasm and knowledge. The kitchen did not disappoint, the meal was exceptional and so were the wines. I would happily recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great night out.

Perfect location overlooking the sea and wonderful staff and food

This is a seriously good restaurant. The food was outstanding. It’s a little strange/ funny inside, maybe not what you might expect from this type of high end restaurant but the people are kind and friendly. We enjoyed our evening. I wouldn’t hesitate to say this really has to be one of the best restaurants on the Isle Of White. Well priced for such good food. Well worth a visit.

A mother's day treat like no other, the moment I walked through the door I was made to feel special, We were seated the most wonderful view over the sea. Beautiful pink champagne was delivered without request, how wonderful. The staff were exceptionally attentive. Our first course (excuse me for not remembering the proper wording) was a puff filled with most delicious smoked cheese sauce topped with delicious caviar, next we had ox cheek pie with most amazing chard crisp. The main meal was lamb, wow what a punch of flavour and beautifully presented with luscious creamy garlic mash. The dessert was pear sponge, but the added extra bits made it sumptuous with every bite. Overall the food was my most memorable ever, every mouthful was a taste bud explosion. Excellent service, exceptional food. 👏

Had a lovely stay at this hotel. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Dinner was delicious and staff very knowledgeable about the food and wine. The view from the room was amazing and we spent hours watching the sea from the windows. Highly recommend.

I booked afternoon tea as a treat for my mum. Everything was amazing, with nothing that could be improved. We have had a few afternoon tea treats across the island, and the cakes were the best. The gents toilets could probably do with a spruce up. Not at the same level as the rest of the establishment

Yet another fantastic Christmas Day meal at this beautiful restaurant. We had a last minute family member join us and they were so accommodating with changing our booking. Service also so good. Can’t wait till next Christmas. 🎄

Had Sunday lunch. Arrived by car in a difficult parking area, but was directed to the car park by a friendly member of staff. Dining room is functional and adequate and over looks the sea. Food and service were excellent. The kitchen produced a series of courses worthy of Michelin attention. Nice wine. (Viognier)

E Realty friendly staff lovely room and fantastic food, Very relaxed "home for home " feel , Freshly cooked breakfast and a fabulous restaurant, My only minor criticism is there is no "room service" menu.

Simply outstanding! We couldn't stop raving about our lunch at the Hambrough. We brought our dog along with us to lunch and we could not have been made to feel more welcome. We had our own table set up for us in the bar with treats and water for our pooch. My husband and I had the three-course, £35, set menu for lunch which was out of this world! I can not remember the last time we both enjoyed our meals as much from start to finish. The wine list was extensive and the waiter was able to suggest the best wines to pair with our food choices. We were visiting the Isle of Wight for 3 days and or only regret is not booking the Hambrough every one of those days. We will be back!

We had a fantastic tasting menu tonight and I very rarely rush or even bother to review places but the four of us who went all thought it was the best meal we have eaten for a long time. Service was great and everything was delicious. Did a ‘Price is Wight’ special and it was a bargain for such a superb meal. Every course looked beautiful and tasted better. Rooms also look lovely and I wholeheartedly recommend you visit here soon 🤩

We ate here last night and would very highly recommend.  The food is absolutely fantastic, Michelin quality and presentation. Faultless.  The staff here were also incredibly friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the food they were serving.  We can't wait to return - Thank you.  P&A  Ps - dog friendly as well ! 

What an incredible food experience !! 😍 from the amuse bouche to the desert every course was a surprise and delight in taste and presentation. We love fine dining and have experienced incredible places, but this was beyond fine dining, and the combination of such an outstanding menu and the very attentive service makes this faultless!!! We can't wait to come back Alex

My son and new wife were married in Ventnor recently and chose The Hambrough Hotel as the venue for the wedding breakfast. We found all the staff very welcoming, in fact it felt like we were among friends the moment we all sat down. My main comment though is that the food was exquisite! I have eaten in some very well known restaurants, The Ritz, The London Hilton, The Dorchester on Park Lane, The Mena House Oberoi in Cairo to name but a few and none of those were as delicious as the meal that evening with its pork centrepiece served at that celebration in October. The restaurant staff were efficient, friendly, and enhanced the friendly, family atmosphere. I would definitely recommend anyone to go there when they visit the Isle of Wight.

Top rated food. Rather an underwhelming interior in the restaurant and the lounge area, it could do with an interior designer coming in. The waiter helped to make it a memorable evening. It was expensive but worth it.

Our experience at this restaurant was second to none. It is a small intimate restaurant as part of a hotel in Ventnor. Nice ambiance with great non-intrusive music. The food was exceptional! The standard was at the highest with so much attention to detail with presentation. The Ingredients were of the highest quality, the duck I ate just melted in the mouth. We were all blown away by our meals from the amuse bouche to the desserts/cheese plate. Everything is cooked from by the chef. The service was professional but very personal and friendly. The waiters were enthusiastic about the menu and talked about the dishes with you, and seemed proud of the restaurant. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant highly enough, and would give it 6 stars if I could.

Everything about this meal was exceptional. The food was absolutely delicious, the wine was very good, the ambience very pleasant, and the service exactly as one would wish. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

I had not visited the Isle for several decades, and was staying in Ventnor for a few days, so I decided to treat myself. Friendly and engaging staff, top notch food. I had the beef bavette as a main, it was cooked to perfection. I enjoyed one too many of The Hambrough cocktails too (their variation of a champagne cocktail). I will be visiting the Isle again next September and will be hoping to dine at the Hambrough once more.

This was our second lunch here in two weeks, we enjoyed the first so much we re booked at once. The food was exceptional, and the whole experience greatly enhanced by our very friendly and cheerful waiter. We had a lunch time deal for two...

The setting was lovely, sitting at a window table overlooking the sea. Sun was shining which added to the ambiance. We had an excellent high Tea with gorgeous cakes and scones. Even had butter which added to the cream tea ….

A truly fine dinning experience. The food is exceptional, few restaurants in the UK can match this standard. Its an expensive restaurant for the Isle of Wight, but it would be four times the cost in London. I would encourage everyone to try this restaurant...

Went there for a wedding breakfast ( evening meal). Highly recommend it. Amazing food, and great service. Couldn't of been more helpful .

The champagne high-tea was an absolutely lovely experience for my auntie and I, from beginning to end. From the minute we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and seated at a window table with a beautiful ocean view. The table was pre-set with crisp white linens and elegant decoration and plate ware. Our server was amazing... very charismatic, friendly, and attentive. We were presented with Prosecco upon arrival, which was was divinely delicious. Shortly after, followed the English tea and a finessed array of crustless finger sandwiches, scones with the most delicious clotted cream and strawberry jam, and an assortment of delicate desserts. Everything was superbly eloquent. Highly recommended.

Had a 7 course tasting menu and some of the best food I've ever eaten on the island. The duck was amazing and everything was excellent. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. Will definitely return

Brilliant dinner venue, is it the best on the Isle of Wight? Not cheap but great value given quality and taste!!!

We stayed in 2 rooms in July 2023. The location was lovely and the food from Matthew Tommkinson absolutely superlative. We were disappointed that the photos online did not marry up with the reality however; although clean, the rooms are tired and dated, and the carpets, which have been in place for years are old and dark, not luxurious white/beige as in the photos. Both showers in adjoining rooms were blocked a couple of times and flooded the floors. The radiators were rusty. Photos show new curtains and smart bedding which is not the reality. Breakfasts very good. I'm not sure why is was 5 star - the food was, but the accommodation definitely not. Not great value at all.

The duck parfait was a meaty cloud of joy. The lamb beautifully cooked but a little confusing. The beef was like eating delicious velvet. The cod was under seasoned but the fig vodka was spectacular. They gave us an orange.
