Long John Eater in Isle of Wight

Have been here many times as it's been here a long time, so very popular with tourists and local people alike!! The food is normal cafe food, but very nice!! We had a fry up but it's never greasy!! Good view of the pier and the sea too! Never have to wait long either!!

Absolutely topnotch fresh food perfectly cooked and delicious very well mannered and polite ! 10 stars and very well deserved at that 🌟

Polite service did not hurry you to order

We eat here regularly. The food is always excellent, well cooked with large portions on sensible sized plates, and the menu is extensive and varied. OK, it's not Cordon bleu, but it's better than a lot of other places on the island. The prices are very reasonable and again better than most places. The decor is basic, but the food more than compensates, The staff go over and above, and great fun.

We just pop in before taking the Hover opposite. Nice staff and good platters. Quick service too...

The staff were so friendly. The toilets were spotless and the food was delicious. So many places are closed by 4pm on IOW so stumbled on this place by chance. Not sorry at all!

We love a diner, so this was a great place for a quick lunch. It’s not expensive and the food was good. Nothing fancy, but very satisfying. The staff was friendly and the service was quick.

Milk shakes were warm and I would be more inclined to say it was, barely, flavoured milk. Certainly won't go back.

We wanted a dog friendly fish and chips restaurant in Ryde and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious, the fish the best I've eaten for a long time. The waiter was very attentive and our food was served quickly. Portion sizes were very good too. Definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone but especially to dog owners.

This place clearly fulfils a need, given the number of glowing reviews. The welcome is certainly a warm one, and the service helpful. Unfortunately, the food is not of a kind that would appeal to everyone. The greasiness of the breakfast caused my companion - a big fan of the full breakfast - to say it was the worst he had ever had. I am happy to see that many people like this style of cooking, but feel it is only fair to let others know in advance what kind of experience awaits them...

Scrummy breakfast at a very reasonable price. Different sizes available for small to large appetites. Staff are great, friendly and polite and nothings too much trouble so ask if you cant see what you want. Wheelchair and buggy accessible and dogs are welcome too. Eat here a lot as there's such a huge choice of meals. Never been disappointed as most meals are cooked fresh.

Love this place, great memories as been one of a few restaurants we come to when on the Isle of Wight, 30 plus years and the food and decor brings back wonder memories, starting a a child with my late grandad, Nan and now mum, with also my dad and sister as a family holiday to the IOW was a years thing, shame over the years restaurants open and close and with the bistros and retro restaurants not many family good valve food restaurants around, coming from London I just love little restaurants like this, great food, great staff and great memories, back again in 2024.

Very welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, charmingly classic decor and very well priced, tasty food. Definitely worth a visit for a hearty lunch or a light bite!

Absolutely brilliant place for food, great prices and service too.

Great unpretentious little eatery, that serves up good food a a very reasonable price. The waiter was helpful and attentive and as a solo traveller I was made to feel welcome. Sadly there are few as good as this place. The only downside for some is the elderly decor, although myself, I found it quirky and old-fashioned with its Formica tables, and scrupulously clean. Will certainly visit again when I'm on the Isle of Wight. It fully deserves the five gold stars.

A lovely cafe in the centre of Ryde, spacious with plenty of seats, the waiter is super friendly, attentive & kind, the food nice, generous in size and god priced, a real gem of a place 🥳

Great service, very friendly waiter. We all felt comfortable and happy here, and there was a gift shop upstairs, well stocked, and good prices, which was a sweet surprise. I got scrambled eggs on toast, and the toast was a little soggy, but I had spare toast, which was perfect. The chips and cheese on toast my family ordered looked delicious. Very generous with the cheese. We would definitely come back next time we're on the island. Thank you.

A quiet rainy day in December. A nice, clean eatery. Food was excellent, the attentive waiter provided good advice and friendly service. Would go again, hopefully in better weather. They even supplied lemon tea. Five stars are well deserved.

Been going to Long Johns for many years now, two or three times a year. But since moving to Newport iow september this year. Im often in Ryde and have visited several times. With a few friends and my brother tried quite a few items on the menu. I would say all food fantastic safe calm atmosphere. Staff very nice attentive but not overbearing.😀

Bought a bacon, egg bap but it was more like a full breakfast. Great food at a great price. Well done. Highly recommended

I've ordered fish and chips, it was nice and with a good portion of chips. Will go there again.

The food is good quality and very good value for money compared to many other places. The menu is similar to a chip shop although they do pizza as well. The chips are nice. Serving staff very friendly and helpful, although there was no one around when we arrived, or for a few minutes after we sat at a table. The only issue is the decor, which looks like it is a 1980s McDonald's or Wimpy. Very dated and not very cosy or welcoming. The beige and burgundy let's it down, as it's very old fashioned. However, ignore the decor and focus on the food and prices. Toilets are upstairs. It would be good if there was seating upstairs and some shop downstairs because it's much warmer upstairs when the doors are open.

Went to go in but it really felt off. People immediately watching us as we walked in and very cramped sitting area. We went here a long time ago and it was a much different story. Unfortunately we left pretty quickly after feeling pretty conspicuous. I'm hoping it's a one off so we'll be sure to go back and hopefully change my review.

Visited this great cafe 3 times during our weekend in Ryde. Friendly, comfortable and a great selection of food to suit all appetites and tastes.

Really handy stop if you have just got off the ferry like me, the loo is up some steep stairs.

Went in for lunch. No staff visible. Had to go into the kitchen to find anyone, was told to go and sit down and they'd be with us. Waited about 20 minutes. Noticed the place was full of insects. A big crawled over the table. We left.

We used this cafe last year.there's one particular gentleman who makes it for them we came back this year he is still there he even remembered us the food is delicious and great service

Popped in for a cream tea. Lovely warm sultana scone, clotted cream and jam. Nothing fancy and hit the spot on a rainy afternoon.

Fantastic gluten free battered fish and chips, one of the best I have had. Staff very knowledgeable and separate area for preparation. Several meals can be adapted to cater for coeliacs. Meal for 3 for £30.

What a fantastic place looks are definitely deceptive. A warm welcome from Mark seated and a look at the menu all good. Both of my sons are autistic and our youngest can be challenging but this was no problem for the staff who went above and beyond to help taking time to listen to him and catering for his restricted diet. Jacket potato with loads of cheese no salad and plenty of butter we had our meals and I can honestly say they were delicious and at very good prices. We'll done mark and the team Deacon can't wait to come back

Excellent, great food and price, bit of a wait for a table there was seven of us and two dogs. Once seated greeted quickly and allowed time to look at the menu. Food and drinks ordered and arrived promptly. Nice and hot and delicious. Great value for money staff very friendly and happy. Highly recommend especially the cod and chips. We will be back for sure.

Been here for years and never disappoints with great food and friendly staff, been coming to the Isle of Wight since I was a tot, many restaurants been and gone 😞 with memories with the family, now making my own memories,

First visit here and like my previous reviews first impressions count. Four tired hungry people looking for a meal on Ryde Esplanade found Long John. Attracted first by the name, then the menu cover, the meal choices and spaces available we were quickly seated ready to begin our deliberations of what to eat. The menu has a very good range of meals to choose from, including fish choices, roasts, burgers and much more. Once ordered the meals arrived very quickly and we had excellent customer service. From research it seems Long John is a popular place with locals and tourists. The good was in very good portions, well cooked and very delicious. Thank you Long John for feeding the family so well.

Table service by a wonderfully polite and competent waiter. The selection of food was brilliant and the prices competitive. The food was freshly cooked and extremely tasty; cleared plates all round. We will definitely return.

Probably the best Cafe in Ryde, serving honest British classics. We popped in for a hearty breakfast before our Ferry home and considering we were a group of 7, the service was really quick and spot on. The waiter was friendly and accommodating, who took a real pride in ensuring everything was spot on. The food was piping hot, with very generous portions and cooked to perfection - I can definitely recommend the £9 Long John Big Big Breakfast! Drinks were again plentiful and well priced. Its a shame the upstairs is no longer available for dining, however downstairs is available still. We last visited in 2006 and can honestly say the food is as good today, as it was then. Definitely one to visit while your in Ryde.

Nice little cafe. Decent food at a decent price. Very handy for the pier and the ferry or the hovercraft. Close to the train station and buses to other parts of the Isle of Wight. Would definitely go there again and would recommend it to others. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Fresh food, good service , chips not as good.

We both ordered Cod & Chips. It was one of the best fish and chips I've eaten for a long time. Proper homemade chips too. Great Value too! Our bill was £23 for 2x Cod and Chips, 1x Large Fanta and 1x Large Coke. We will definitely eat here again when we're in the area.
