Review of Barnaby’s Restaurant, 4 Pier Street, Sandown, Isle of Wight My brother and I had walked into Sandown from Brading that morning – just the two of us – the others had taken the bus. We couldn’t resist the memories that the walk provided - New Road then Morten Road and finally under the railway bridge and into Avenue Road (now there’s a contradiction – ‘avenue’ and/or ‘road’) heading for the beach. It was a walk from times long passed … Mum with kids in-hand heading for a day on the beach. Typically, we’d turn left following Culver Parade overlooking the sea heading out-of-town. Our favourite beaches were opposite the amusement arcade and the paddle boat lake with views across to the white cliffs of Culver Down. Together with access to a fine sandy beach, they remain cherished memories of childhood holidays. Images of the beach, distant views out-to-sea and the headlands that rise either side of the town have remained into those adult years. Change is always a factor of life … everything changes, and you can’t expect to see the earlier Sandown through the eyes of a couple of little kids. Today’s version is different …. but what an unexpected change! The modern town seemed quiet and a shadow of the one remembered from earlier - empty/abandoned/dilapidated buildings, no/few people/holidaymakers around, shops closed/closing down signs. We had remembered it as an effervescent magic kind of place. This was a real surprise – we had no idea. A wicked witch (from those childhood books of the day) had put a spell on the place? Someone will know the reasons. Dilapidation was worse along the seafront– exploring the Esplanade above the beach behind the High Street heading towards the pier. On one side the sea and, facing it, a neighbourhood of once elegant but now derelict 19th C. buildings all of which seemed to have been vandalized. Which is how we came across Barnaby’s Restaurant. It was the first food place that we saw that presented a clean modern-day image – a haven even, and seemingly the only place in the neighbourhood that was open. It was half-way along Pier Street climbing towards the main commercial centre along the High Street. Barnaby’s was at street-level (but up a couple of steps) with a promising image, inside and outside seating, friendly wait staff and an interesting menu. The place was full of light with a modern décor and smart wooden furniture – an attractive place to eat - somewhere for our lunch/snack that day. There were a handful of people dining most of whom were seated outside. We joined them as a table became available. We had our evening meal already planned, but a lunch snack was timely. We had worked up an appetite by following the sea front as far as Browns Golf Course where we did a U-turn and headed back. The road along the beach front had not been well-remembered – apart from the bright red ornamental WW2 mine by the roundabout where the High Street begins. Check out Barnaby’s menu - four different kinds of breakfasts: English small/big, veggie, special & make-your-own all <£10. Available all day. And then there were >26 snacks/extras – chips, beans/toast, onion rings, etc. - you name it – within the range £3-£6. Good value. We opted for tea/coffee/cream scone each – hot drinks and delicious scones. Our bill came to £18.80 so <£5/person. More than satisfied with our comfortable break in a delightful restaurant we reached the High Street and turned right heading for Brading looking for a bus stop for those taking the bus. It had been an interesting day … notwithstanding that sobering image of a south coast English seaside town of the current day that had once provided our family the best of summer holidays. Been here a few times and remembered why we don't visit often. Staff member pounces as soon as you enter asks if you want a drink. Hangs around the restaurant making you feel like you're being watched. We ate here too and before I'd even finished my mouthful she was clearing our plates. Think they need to give people chance to settle into their seats before asking if they want a drink etc. I'd never be as pushy as she was. Don't think we're be back.

Cold plates...if food served on hot plates, then you could enjoy eating at a relaxed pace rather than eating quickly whilst food 'just warm'. Create your own breakfast, good idea, however, you have to have 3 Hash browns no options for just 1 or 2, also Toast is 2 slices no option for just 1 slice. Plate fairly greasy from fried eggs. Staff very friendly and made you feel welcome.

Omg.... What can I say? On arrival was greeted with an OK..... I made a point of repeating my cheery goodmorning and again, OK. Could really do with some customer service training. Food was medicore, service was appalling. I loved the name and asked where it came from, was promptly told it was inherited with purchase, not much else to add tbh. Prices were slightly high for the quality of food, let alone the complete lack of service

What a rude lady! Stepped into the cafe after checking for ‘no dog’ signs to be shot down by the waitress, very rudely telling us to go outside. Happily sit outside with our dog but absolutely no need to be so abrupt and nasty. We hastily left. Perhaps a sign on the door would be a good idea.

Many breakfast next time I go some where else than pay £26.64 for this for three people and a drink each non alcoholic tea coke lemonade .....WORST EVER EXPERIENCE OF A VERY POOR BREAKFAST no mushrooms your better of at Witherspoon if you can cope with it because my slightly dry some times

We were told about 'The Best Dressed Crab ' from our host where we stayed 👍 According to Google Maps, only a 7 minute drive from our location, we picked a day and phoned ahead to make a reservation ( don't visit without booking prior to going ). Because of local roadworks in place, it took nearly an hour to reach our destination 😩 We parked up alongside the river and proceeded to walk down the jetty to what looked like a mobile home in the river🥺 When we entered the hut, we were pleasantly surprised at how cosy and welcoming it was. We were shown to our table, and menus were received 👍 The menu was well put together with various dishes to tempt you from a crab sandwich to a full seafood platter🥲 We chose the seafood platter, and boy was that a great option, we had clams, prawns, crevettees, dressed crabs, mussels, lobster, and crab claws, all on top of a fresh salad tray with leaves, rocket and baby tomatoes, and two large chunks of baguette ( see photos ) all washed down with some prosseco and English ale it was very very tasty. It satisfied us thoroughly, so there was no room for dessert . Cannot recommend this place highly enough just wish we lived closer as I think this would be where I spent most of my hard earned English pounds in❤️ Please be aware that they can run out of seafood as they are governed by what they catch fresh that morning

This place is famous for its views across the Solent, but only in the summer. In the winter the windows are always steamed up giving you near to no visibility outside. We didn’t eat but the menu looks good and average prices for the area. Drinks were more expensive than the Seaview Hotel just around the corner. +£1 per drink on gin & tonic. It was November on a Friday evening and all tables were reserved. We did sit at one of their best tables for our drink ‘Captain Ted’s Table’ and it was wobbly as hell. Felt like it was going to give way at any time. Come on this is an easy fix.
