Very warm welcome. Amazing selection of local beers and ciders, which is why this pub keeps winning awards from CAMRA. Good food. Very reasonable pricing. Quaint, old building with intriguing layout. Lovely location. Large car park. Covered outdoor seating available and a Significant and well equipped children's play area. I am planning to visit again. Thanks Tom and your team for enhancing my day. I did not want to leave.

Never again... I visited with my family, so we decided to sit outside next to the children's play area. There is an outside bar which I noticed was only serving cold drinks. But because my wife wanted a cappuccino, I attempted to make my way inside (where I presumed the inside bar/restaurant would have a coffee machine). This was the first challenge, i.e. actually getting into the pub... The way into the pub from the beer garden had a big (and rather unwelcoming) sign saying "STAFF ONLY - NO ENTRY - USE FRONT DOOR". This was rather inconvenient, so I walked around to the front of the pub to get in. I went into the pub to order my wife's cappuccino, a pint and some soft drinks for my kids. The young barmaid behind the bar said that I needed to provide my table number. I explained that, because I wasn't ordering any food, I didn't take a note of my table number, but I explained that we were sitting outside next to the children's play area. I also explained that I'd happily wait inside the pub for my wife's cappuccino to be made, if that was the issue. The young barmaid said that this wouldn't be possible, and that I had to provide a table number to order. I then left the pub (via the front door again) and walked all the way back to the beer garden. I noticed that there was a very small table number in the middle of our table on a small black plate (table number 37). Totally exasperated by this experience - and still without any drinks - we decided to cut our losses and we just left. We made our way to another pub which didn't make entering via the beer garden, or ordering drinks, such an unnecessary hassle. Hasten to say, we won't be coming back here again.

The Halfway House, Brenchley is a niche British pub based in the gorgeous Kent countryside. This pub has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. They have a fantastic selection of drinks from local brewed Ales, Ciders and Lagers. When I’ve had the food it’s been quick to come to the table, hot and delicious. The outside bar and seating area is huge making it a great location to catch up with your friends in the summer. I’ll happily recommend this pub to anyone.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Where do I start with this review? I don’t have one positive thing to say about Halfway House. I booked lunch for my 50th birthday for yesterday and booked this via email on the 11th December. This was confirmed via email by Sam. When we got to Halfway House I stood at the bar for 5 minutes whilst the Landlord spoke to his mates that were all gathered round one end of the bar. He acted like he couldn’t be bothered to take my name and said there was no booking under my first name or surname. When I said I booked via email he said he I should have done it via phone and that is what “Niki” is like. I said I had it confirmed on email (showed him the email) and this was by Sam not Niki. I also mentioned that it was my birthday lunch and was greeted with no response. Then the other lady working there and the landlord said you can wait over there and pointed to a corner by the fire exit. So my family and I waited over in the corner for 5 minutes not sure what was happening. So I went back to the bar and was again ignored and then the Landlord finally and again reluctantly spoke to me as I asked are we going to be seated there in that corner by the door/fire exit or are we going somewhere else. He responded very rudely and said “well where do you want to go”. I said I would prefer not to be stuck in the corner (which was also dirty). He was rolling his eyes and they were huffing and puffing and again I said this is supposed to be my birthday lunch and again no reaction. In the end we walked out. The Landlord was extremely rude and there were definitely misogynistic vibes. At no point at all was there an apology for not having made the booking even though I had it confirmed in writing or showing any sign of caring that it was for a special occasion. The staff acted like I was irritant and there was not even an offer to ask us what we would like to drink. I think the way we were treated overall was disgusting and I will definitely be spreading the word to everyone I know in the local area not to visit this pub. There is no charm, customer car or just plain manners.

I've been absent from TripAdvisor for a while now. But another visit to the Halfway House made me think that I should really help others know how good this place is. Huge outside area, with play stuff for kids, historic inside area, great selection of real ale and cider (can't comment about lager or wine) and good value pub grub. There was a wedding party when we arrived so a delayed kitchen opening time, but never mind. All the food is great and reasonably priced which appears to be rare in a pub nowadays. My only complaint - The excellent Garlic Prawns. Previous I had to ask for an extra order of bread to soak up the delicious garlic butter. Now the dish comes with bread included, but much less garlic butter. I suppose that's health and safety for you. All in all an excellent pub, excellent location, excellent beer/cider, and excellent pub grub. Just what a pub should be.

This is not about the food, it’s about the people. It’s a big ‘thank you’ to Sam for allowing us to stay overnight unannounced when we had to abandon our snowed-in car. He did everything to make us welcome and comfortable. Accommodation was not available but he cleared an area for us in which to bed down with camping gear provided by charitable neighbours Gordon, Hilary and Freya, lit a log fire to keep us warm through the night and provided us with tea/coffee making facilities for the morning. Thanks also to Ben for providing an excellent ham sandwich after the kitchen closed. The menu looked good and we shall repay your hospitality with another visit in better circumstances. We’ve no doubt the service we will receive will again be excellent from friendly, helpful staff.

I'd just like to say that myself and a friend came to this pub a week or so ago just for a drink and really enjoyed it - every Thursday is music night so there was a good band and although we had to queue up to order drinks, we didn't mind and enjoyed our evening. We therefore came back yesterday evening for dinner as well as drinks....what a mistake! We queued up to order our drinks and food and after reaching the front of the queue after 20 mins, we were told they were no longer serving food - it was 7.45pm at this point. After much begrudging, they said they would let us order food. We waited 1.5 hours before I asked a nice waiter when we could expect our food - he said it would be another 30 mins. We waited and then he came back to say they had run out of our meal choices - by this point it was 9.30pm and we'd had enough of waiting so we went home with no dinner. It is such a shame as it could have been a really nice evening but this has ruined it for us and we won't be back again. We're not unreasonable people but even I was a bit shocked that after 1.5 hours of waiting, they didn't mention before that they'd run out of our food choices. If we'd been told earlier, we could have gone to another pub close by and ordered dinner. Instead we went home hungry. The owners really need to do something here as everyone around us was also having to wait hours for food and many people were demanding refunds. Such a shame as we've been to this pub before but now won't ever come back.

When he went to the bar for his second pint it was suggested he tried a different one. EVEN BETTER. My Sauvignon was delicious. Now to the food. Good, wholesome, well cooked food in large portions. Meaty sausages, flavoursome gravy with crispy fried onions on the top. The duck breast, perfectly cooked, pink, tender and juicy with bubble and squeak. The selection of veg were perfectly cooked. This wonderfully quirky pub offers an excellent range of beers (including guest ales, with tasting notes) and an impressive menu, including daily specials. There's no music, big screen sport (or any TV at all) and it's all the better for this. What it does offer is the chance to relax, in interesting surroundings, in the company of like-minded people and friendly dogs, with real fires in winter to make the place especially welcoming. The simple but effective communication system involves sending food orders on slips pf paper down tubes behind the bar to the kitchen below and, although it's not a fast food establishment, the waiting time for food is never very long. Service at the bar can sometimes be a bit slow and one member of the waiting staff in the evenings was a bit offhand on one recent visit ('I don't do drinks') but it's a place to linger and it makes the world seem a better place, where all the turmoil seems a long way away. First-time visitors should beware of unexpected steps! There's a bus stop right outside but it's a pity there aren't a few more buses, although there's no shortage of car parking.

Absolutely gorgeous and quirky old pub. As advertised on the website: no TV, no pinball machines, not even phone reception! I noticed they had a WiFi code should you need it.

Called in to this pub to sample the ale. What a find! Wonderfully quirky, good old fashioned English pub! A warm welcome from staff and customers alike and the ale? well kept, flavoursome and an awesome choice

Met my wife and friends after their walk for a drink or two. Sat by the fire and had a good visit. The local beer was fantastic. The owners were hospitable. In my opinion this proper country English pub is one of my favorite. It's a place not to be missed.

A great family pub. Good food, well known locally for its excellent real ale selection. A large beer garden and outside bar in summer. Beer festivals on bank holidays with barbecues. Varied menu. Great atmosphere and an authentic village pub.

Very, very brightly lit bar, full of very loud (presumably) locals, two huge blackboards advertising totally uninspiring food. Felt we each had two heads and couldn't get out of there quick enough! (Reminded us of that scene from 'An American Werewolf in London! And it wasn't even Halloween!)

We chose this Pub as we had heard it was dog friendly and it certainly is. Not only do they allow dogs but they positively encouraged them. This love of dogs abounded throughout the pub including both the staff and customers. The barman took great trouble to explain to our dog, who is new and very timid, just what a wonderful place a pub is for a dog.

I wanted to have the burger & it was great - excellent well-flavoured beef cooked just right (safe but still juicy) with decent cheese and nice brioche bun. Good salad and ketchup as requested; asked for the chips to be well done & they were beautifully crisp, even if they were not quite hot enough. Choose one of the unusual draught beers, I can't remember the weird name of mine but it was lovely. The honeycomb ice cream could have done with more honeycomb in it, barely detectable, but that is being picky. This is a really good place for lunch with friends.

We were recommended to go for lunch by friends. We both had a cheese and pickle sandwich with salad. Nicely presented and a good portion size but the bread was not buttered which made the sandwich extremely dry and hard to eat. The salad was gritty, so I assume the salad leaves had not been washed which is a shame as the ingredients were all good. The service was very friendly but the attention to detail in the food was lacking. It is an old and interesting pub, maybe try one of the hot dishes as they did look good.

Always a great selection of food, served either in the rather quirky pub or in the huge garden. But the real star is the real ale selection; always around a dozen from the wood to cater for all tastes, not to mention the Chiddingstone 7.5% "silly cider"!

Visited with friends for a Saturday evening meal. Inside looks very traditional and a proper pub. Food was typical pub grub-just what we wanted. It was executed really well, we will definitely be back. Very good choice of local ales. And to top it all everything at very affordable prices. See you again soon!

This is such a nice pub, so different from the normal run of the mill. It's been decorated and kept to a rustic style, not spoilt like so many pubs with 'cute' little touches. Old barrels, different bar levels makes it unique, loved it, the food was great as were the staff.

This is a nice pub easy to find on the Horsmonden road through Brenchley. Attractive from the outside and typical of an English pub on the inside with lots of cosy corners. This place has an amazing 'wall' of cask ales (I think I counted twelve) and I tried a few, all superbly kept. Paradise for the real ale drinker. We only had drinks on this visit but the food looked really good. A slightly lacklustre welcome from the bar staff prevented this from being a five star review, but I look forward to another visit. Very good.

Popped in before an afternoon wedding so only wanted a sandwich or similar. Good choice of things on the menu and our bacon and Brie/cheese and pickle sandwiches were excellent. Lovely, fresh bread and loads of filling. Watched other meals arrive and they looked very good too. Sadly not our local but will definitely go back. A friendly, authentic "Pub".

I have been to this pub a couple of times in the past but today was the first time I ate. I had sea bream with prawns, salad and new potatoes followed by a cheese board whilst my father enjoyed pork chop, cheesy mash, chorizo and black pudding with vegetables followed by crumble! The food was delicious and reasonably priced. If you don't want a full meal then there are lighter options and sandwiches available. It's a real ale pub but also caters for other drinkers. A locals pub but very welcoming to all. I'd 100% visit again!

It was great to find them still serving lunch till 14.30. Lots of parking and warm inside.Lots of little alcoves to sit in - not so good if you have a bad back though!Good selection of dishes with one vegetarian main option.Food was served quickly and generous portion. Great selection of beers served straight from the kegs.Lots of interesting bits and pieces to look at hanging from the ceiling - though it could do with a bit of a dust but we hadnt gone there to do an inspection!Enjoyed it , second time we've been back.

Had lunch with a friend today. Plenty of space in the car park. The pub is full of nooks and crannies, and though we had booked, there were plenty of spare tables, though these did fill up.The choice of beers is interesting with a number of local breweries represented. The food choice was OK as was the price, probably around average for the area.( I had ham, double egg and chips- £9.75)Food quality was good , and quantity also good.Service was friendly, and efficient.Hence the I'd rate the overall expereince good, and would have no hesitation in choosing to eat here again.

Came in this weekend with my wife and was served by the legendary Max. Drinks were spot on, however I did see the aforementioned bartender dip his cock in a few of the customer's pints (including mine). I don't know my drinks very well so assume this was all part of the preparation process.

Absolutely shocking value for money and quality. The photos are completely misleading. Ordered a cookie dough takeaway. It arrived and was about half the size of the photo, the cookie was rock hard and the sauce was cold and completely hardened. Was completely inedible.
