Expectations were reasonably high despite being unable to book for the later evening spot and with a dog only able to sit in the rear room. So what was it like? Pretty average and for the cost poor. The food was at best OK - portions were small and the food served nothing special indeed I would suggest nothing about the food would see you want to return. The wine - white chardonnay was frankly horrible, the house carafe no worse so perhaps the better choice. The atmosphere was pretty much non existent and the chairs possibly the most uncomfortable I have had the misfortune to sit upon. In summary extremely disappointing. I will stick to having a drink in the bar and give the dining experience a complete swerve.

Review based on dining only as we are non residents. Booked 2 months in advance to guarantee a table to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Thanks for the card on arrival. Requested Elk room table which we got, right opposite the open fire cooking station. Great theatre and overall first class experience. Opted for Queenie scallops to share off the specials board followed by slow cooked lamb shoulder and I had venison sausages with mash & onion gravy. Side order of cavalo nero. Cannot fault the food , drinks ambience, service. Fantastic decor inside, some outstanding photos/ art on the walls which won't be to everyone taste, but amusing all the same. Only improvement I would suggest, get some lights on. Reading the menu by candlelight is definitely theatrical but come on, it's 2024. Ignore negative reviews. Go with an open mind and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The surroundings fabulous Wow whst a stunning place to be sat in the sunshine watching the deer. The interior is quirky and the art work interesting. It is certainly a snug and welcoming pub. The meats cooked on the open fire in the elk room were cooked beautifully. All thst said we were not blown away by the food. Well priced and yet still have to pay extra for greens. We've been and enjoyed the experience but the food not fabulous enough to bring us back, definitely better meals to be had in Norfolk

The menu here is superb, as is the wine list, the decor and the whole experience. Food cooked over the fire is sensational - and I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. Whilst not every space is dog friendly there are several rooms that are in addition to the beautiful outdoor space. A fantastic experience to be repeated Im sure.

A wonderful pub restaurant in a deer park. Hearty food and some exceptional art including great pieces by Paula Rega (as well as some which is designed to shock) plus a 10000 year old Irish elk skull and antlers. Lots for our son to do. Food and service outstanding. It’s also a proper pub with a bar with pool table darts etc. we had a chicken and leek pie and a steak from the wood fired indoor grill. Plus excellent starters. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Recommended.

My first visit to this restaurant , recommended by family & friends. We booked a dog friendly table. The welcome was amazing , with treats for the 2 dogs. There were 5 adults in our group. The service and the food was amazing. Good choice of food on the menu, all obviously freshly prepared. If there are too many choices I am alway suspicious that most comes from the freezer. Plenty of space between tables and a good wine list. It was Sunday evening and most of us chose a variation of a roast . I chose slow cooked lamb, which was delicious, lots of flavours. Expertly prepared by a ‘proper chef’. Outside the parkland is beautiful, deer roaming around and lovely sunset too. I hope to return.

We had an absolutely spectacular meal that will go down in the 'experiences we're super glad we have had' book. The Cromer Crab was delicious (it's converted my husband who was convinced he didn't like dressed crab into someone who loves it when it's done properly) The wood fired pork chop I had was the most succulent delicious one I've ever eaten (we'd had beef twice already on holiday so it made a nice change) The apple sauce tart but buttery, the roast potatoes were crispy the way they should be and the buttered peas and beans on the side were perfect. I can highly recommend the Almond tart for dessert and suggest you leave a big 'pudding slot'' for it though because she's substantial. The artwork and atmosphere here is as spectacular as the food and very much part of a very grown up experience and when we're back in Norfolk again will will absolutely be coming here again

The food is adequate but vastly overpriced. There was absolutely nothing special about any of the dishes we tried. If they had been a third less expensive then the experience would have been ok. Cromer crabs are not large but the one we were served was the size of a credit card. When we complained absolutely nothing was done to address the issue or apologise. The only redeeming feature of our evening was that our waitress was very helpful and pleasant. There are far better options locally.

This was a return trip for all of us. We like the atmosphere and the interior design of the Gunton Arms. A visit feels special , particularly seeing the meat cooking over the fire in the Elk room when you walk through. Those who had the starters loved them. My steak , potatoes and vegetables were absolutely delicious and the sauce was gorgeous. One of the specials was hanger steak, this wasn’t so popular on our table, the verdict being that the flavour was much nicer than the texture. The puddings were good (very generous portions so sharing is an idea) and overall we really enjoyed the food . This would be a five star review but our waitress was a bit too intrusive. In an (expensive ) place like this you expect discreet service and not an account of what the kitchen/bar were told and what they should/shouldn’t have done. We also had to chase the bill at the end . We would still recommend The Gunton Arms though, as it is a fabulous place.

Two night stay here in early January, that we decided on based on a great experience here for dinner back in summer. So in effect I am reviewing two dinners. Firstly, we wouldn't have been back unless we loved it already. We thought the tranquil setting would benefit from a winter backdrop, and it's true. The mist in the morning, the endless darkness at night, under the most stars I have ever seen. Thought then again, I am from London! We also chose the place as it is dog-friendly, and we had to bring him with us on this occasion. Some dining areas are dogs allowed, the Elk Room is no dogs allowed for obvious reasons. As the night draws in, so do the deer, until they are practically at the door. Although diners will be gone by then, only residents still there. It's quite a sight to open the pub door late at night to find several deer staring at you point-blank range. It was a special setting that I choose to propose at on our winter visit, so it will now always be a special place. Anyway, to the food. We had the opportunity to have: Sirloin steak Venison sausages Chicken pork and leek pie Pork belly starter Lamb sweetbreads with spelt Shoulder of lamb We were impressed by all starters and main courses. You will have read that the open fire in the Elk Room is used on all days but Sunday. Standout for me was the lamb sweetbreads, a real treat. Ultimately this is hard-standard unfussy food done very well. They know what they are doing and I recommend it to anyone. I do somewhat laugh that this is listed as having "vegetarian options" etc. In reality this is a meat lover's paradise. Good as the fish on the menu looked, I couldn't resist sticking with the reservation venison and local pork. Service: Very much service with a smile here. Young local staff mainly. Very accommodating and understanding. Cons: Tried the sorbet...wasn't very sorbet-like, more creamy which isn't right. There are lots of crude/rude sexualise paintings and photos dotted around the place, in the dining room and the toilets. Not my taste and not ideal for with kids. It's the owner's particular interest...

Very disappointed when we visited early afternoon. Last went there 2 years ago where it did seem a bit tired. The place looks so inviting in an excellent location. Busy when we entered and went to the bar to order 2 glasses of wine. We wanted large glasses of Merlot & Pinot Grigio. The bartender was cleaning glasses when we spoke to him. He had no empathy towards me and I felt that he wouldn't/didn't want to serve me. His demeanour seemed that it was too much trouble. He said that they don't serve these wines by the glass, only by the bottle. I was surprised as these are two of the most common wines requested by customers. He offered a mediocre red and white which were over £10 a glass. No politeness or rapport from him - seemed to be just 'doing his job'. The surroundings were quite dirty & dusty and the walls/ceiling appeared to be still smoke stained from the smoking era - 2007! We chose not to order food after looking at what other people were eating. Next to us were a couple who had ordered a burger with chips & what looked like coleslaw. The burger did not look homemade, more like a Sainsburys 'taste the difference' burger - very manufactured. The chips were not homemade but skinny like MacDonalds chips at an exorbitant price. This place is living of its fantastic location but of a past reputation which has not been maintained. We will not be visiting again.

The real attraction of the Gunton Arms is the wonderfully refurbished building and the amazing grounds ( a deer park). The food was very good, but quite simple - not a criticism. I had a dressed crab as a starter, which wasn't much different from any other dressed crab I've ever had. My friend had lamb sweetbreads which were gorgeous and made me regret my choice. We both had a pork chop as a main and it may be the biggest, juiciest chop I've ever had, perfectly cooked. It came with a few roast spuds and we had some greens as a side. All quite simple, but well done. The rooms in the Gunton are fantastic. I'm no interior designer, but one cosy room connects with another and another and you don't want to leave, especially as it's also a pub.

Have visited the Gunton Arms several times over the past few years, as family live nearby. We were all particularly looking forward to the steaks, which have been very good before at a regular price. Sadly we weren’t seated in the Elk room, which adds to the experience as the steaks are cooked there. Were shown to a very gloomy and poorly lit room next door where it was difficult to read the menus or specials board and it had a depressing atmosphere. We also find the new trend of being seated with other diners’ dogs in a restaurant a bit intrusive during dinner. We were all rather astonished to note that the steaks available on the menu started at £41, served only with roast potatoes. Sides to be added of course. For a party of 4 and a midweek visit to a pub, it’s not acceptable. We are willing to pay for good food, but on this occasion just could not justify the high cost. Ordered other main courses but these were only average. The selection of alcohol free beers at the bar was nil. Just a lager at 0.5% offered. All and all just a very disappointing evening out. The waiting staff even asked us to move from the table to accommodate the next booking. Nowhere else to sit in the bar area for coffee/drinks. Won’t be returning sadly.

Amazing venue that is quirky, individual and rustic with a gothic vibe set in a beautiful deer park. The pub looks fantastic both inside and outside, particularly the elk dining room with candlelit dining and a stunning fireplace. Busy Sunday lunch trade but staff were friendly and efficient in a relaxed atmosphere. I booked as a birthday treat for my wife who loves a Sunday roast dinner (provided there are decent vegetarian options) and looked forward the experience, based on the mainly excellent reviews. When the booking was made I specifically confirmed that vegetarian roast dinner options would be available but sadly this was not the case. In fact, we were told that vegetarian roasts were not and never had been an option for reasons that frankly remain unclear. Instead, our attention was drawn to some vegetarian (non-roast) options on the main menu, a separate but rather limited vegetarian menu (again, unclear as to why this was separate and not mentioned or produced earlier) together with the offer of roast dinner vegetables but without a centrepiece. In the end, my wife chose a very nice pasta dish, but was nonetheless disappointed to have missed out on a celebratory Sunday roast. We frequently eat out across Norfolk but cannot remember the last time a vegetarian roast dinner was not included, often with a few options. My wife is not a vegetarian for ethical or health reasons, she simply prefers that type of food. I had the lamb shoulder dish that was well presented and delicious. I asked for a zero alcohol lager but sadly that also was not on offer with only low alcohol drinks available, so I had a coke instead. There may be a variety of reasons as to why someone would want a zero rather than low alcohol beer, I prefer the taste of a quality zero offering, Heineken for example. Again, I cannot remember the last time I ate out and zero options were not available. We didn’t stay for dessert and coffee, which is very unusual for us, particularly during a celebratory meal. So to sum up, it is an amazing venue with a unique dining experience wow factor in terms of the surroundings and ambiance. The food we had was very tasty and reasonably priced. However, we were both surprised and disappointed at the absence of vegetarian roast dinner and zero alcohol beer option’s which seemed very odd and out of touch. Equally disappointing was the lack of effort made to improve my wife’s experience, given that staff knew it was her birthday, apologetic but ‘take it or leave it’ basically. So we had one course, left and won’t be going back despite the wonderful venue and great reviews.

I've lived locally to this pub for many years and I have to say the location and setting is amazing, I have never got bored of this place, met some lovely people from all places over the years its always been my favourite place locally until tonight. The four years ago I moved away from area but still liked to go back enjoy a beer and look over the park and watch the deer but now I feel the location and setting is the best bit about the gunton arms, the rather disappointing fact are no decent known lagers just carlsberg or peroni and tonight was the fourth time I've eaten here and yes don't get me wrong the food tastes delicious but I wouldn't say it's high end food anymore, my partner had pork belly starter £10.50 for one piece of belly pork and a tiny smear of apple sauce, I know theres staff and over headed to pay but seriously a dish costing £10.50 that could be made at home for £1.50, I had a starter off the specials board £11.50 for 15 peas half a teaspoon of crispy belly pork and lamb sweet breads, the flavours lovely but £11.50 for the equivalent of three table spoons of food, I'm sorry but very disappointed I feel the price of food is ridiculously overpriced for what you get, I feel that you're actually paying more for the experience of the location and setting of the pub than anything else, I didn't have my glasses with me but paid the bill to then get home and see I'd been charged for 2 large glasses of wine when my partner had 2 medium glasses and I'd also been charged nearly £14 for discretionary service, What!!!! I up to me if I want to leave a tip for the staff not have it just added to my bill, I feel because of the name the gunton arms had got itself for quality and standards have actually now started to fail them, my partner said I should have complained but should you really have to complain at such a so called high end establishment should I really have to check my bill this place should be one point considering, as I said previously this is not high end food over time of trying different establishment I've found better places better quality of food and better value for money so disappointingly and needless to say the gunton arms is truely removed from my favourite list and I very much doubt I shall return the only thing I'll miss about the gunton is watching the deer.

We were ion holiday at the Broads and thought we would have a couple of meals there. The Sunday lunch was ok, not much meat really which was disappointing just one piece, we got over charged on the bill by £86 on the card machine, the waiter actually checked the two bills to make sure they tallied but he didn’t say anything, there was a £33 service charge and we tipped £30 on top in cash. The waiter did the refund and apologised but we did think it was a very odd thing to happen.

There is some interesting art here that provoked conversation which is what art is meant to do. Afterwards we had a drink and went out to watch the deer after our meal. The bill was well over a hundred pounds for two but given the standard of the food and the overrall experience we had the Gunton Arms represented great value for money.

I much prefer giving good reviews, and the Gunton Arms definitely gets one. Midweek dinner was lamb and venison stew - mouthwatering. We especially liked that most of the wine list was available in 500ml carafes - a whole bottle is sometimes too much. Service...

Great location in a deer park. As they were fully booked in the restaurant we opted for the garden. Limited menu on the bar menu. Three starters, mains and desserts.Beer was good, service efficient and Cromer crab salad good, plain and simple. Desserts we had were very tasty.A worthwhile visit.

We’d been before but about 7 years ago when visiting Norfolk. The room we were put in to eat dinner was the dog room. Very much out of the best atmosphere, which is the room with the fire where a chef cooks some items on the menu. Apart from that it was excellent. Enthusiastic waiter. Knowledgeable, and effusive. The meal was great value for money. It was a Monday night, and chock a block. Therefore you need to book well ahead and specify where you want to eat. The food was superb. Crab salad, and loin of venison from their deer park. So all very local. And the cheesecake, which seemed more like a bavarois in texture, was amazing. Service was well paced. Highly recommended

This pub is truly stunning and set in beautiful grounds. The food looks amazing (very meaty) and cooked on an open fire. We only had drinks and beer selection was a little disappointing to be honest … expected better from such a great pub.

We had a greasy experience here. The setting is fantastic with amazing artwork throughout. Great service and the food was beautiful! I went for the crab pasta and my wife had the smoked trout. Nothing was left - everything fresh and tasty. Desserts were lovely too and drinks reasonable. The value was fantastic too as clearly top quality food! I wish I lived local.

Booked last minute for lunch as we knew the weather was going to be good awful. The lady that greeted us was lovely, we assume she was a manager. Everything going well until the waitress came (curly brown hair lady with tattoos, flowery dress) and took our order….my goodness, she jumped in over us whilst trying to order, her tone was short and sassy. I was a close to asking her if she was ok. Every time she came over she was rude and just so short. We were all a little taken aback. We decided to ignore her and ask another member of staff if we needed anything else. All of whom were absolutely delightful. Food was amazing as always. We will be back as we love it here, let’s just hope that particular lady doesn’t serve us again!! Quite mentioned to the staff who were so lovely to our dog :)

Had a fabulous lunch with incredible atmosphere and relaxed service. The food was delicious, fresh and seasonal. Atmosphere was lovely with the chef cooking over the open fire, despite it being very hot day this was not unpleasant at all. Cocktails were great too! Just a note, we decided to catch a train and then walk to the venue, it’s not the safest walk! Recommend taking bikes/taxis/car etc.

We were looking forward to our stay at the Guntom Arms. We were appalled by the place which some descibe as querky, i would describe it as dated and tired. Top prices but not top service, the breakfast was among the worst i have ever had, minimal with you having to request fruit juice and toast for example. i do not want to visit what was supposed to be an up market location to eat and stay, and find a pool table and dart board in the bar - no TV';s in any of the bedrooms. This would be a good place for stag parties, apart of course from the price- AWFUL

There is considerable hype on different levels written about Gunton Arms so there is always a reluctance to enter its sanctum unless your are overwhelming disappointed Its location is unique - it is not a village pub it is not at the end of a country lane off the beaten track but on an estate surrounded by lush countryside - you are already transported into a secret haven. You expect it to be snobbish trendy a place to be seen but quite the contrary it is a rarefied atmosphere not raucous or rushed. It is an eclectic mix of traditional and modern rustic yet formal both finely balanced It is has great energy and each section of the restaurant is quite differentWe were fortunate to be seated next to the open fire where the meat was grilled assiduously by on the spot chef - it was not part of the kitchen but originally a large open fireplaceWe put our carnivorous hat on and had a grilled pork chop locally sourced made in heaven - nothing more to say for what is simplicity not fussy yet of highest quality - its nakedness not propped up by accompaniments. We savoured the tasteWe had nothing else - and left satisfied that this was the gold standard

This was our third visit to the Gunton Arms and our second for Sunday lunch. We ordered the roast chicken to share which was fabulous. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert but I did try 2 gin cocktails which were delicious. Super friendly staff, unique art work on the walls and set in a deer park what's not to love?

Called in today to see if we could get a table as a last minute meal before the end of our holiday. They were super accommodating for adults, a teenager and a dog!Our table was nicely situated and the proximity of the windows ensured that we benefitted from a nice breeze on a warm day. If you are looking for super quick mass produced food, then this isn’t the place for you. However, if you are seeking a beautiful location, with time to relax and wait for amazing food then I don’t think you could do better. We ordered the rib of beef to share and slow cooked lamb shoulder. From arrival to food took around 45 minutes, but it was more than worth the wait. Two avid meat eaters were beaten by the amount of beef…beautifully cooked and what a stunning flavour! But a great portion to take home too! An absolute wow factor on so many fronts.

Very welcoming. Old building in the local vernacular, flit and brick. Shabby chic. Varied and attractive menu. Wines from Tanners and Yapp so plenty of good choice. Crab and salmon fish cake with chilli jam made a lovely starter. Halibut with local asparagus, broad beans and peas beautiful. Lovely passing, apricot tart with clotted cream.

Really quirky setting, some unique memorabilia catching your eye whilst waiting to be seated at the restaurant. Due to the open fire cooking the whole place smells amazing.I had the crab to start and we shared the rib of beef for main. Both were faultless. The sear on the beef from the open fire was incredible. We had minted peas and the griddled courgettes on the side and both were great. The potatoes were just right too!The whole experience was made even better by the attentive and warm hosting by Matt B. What a great asset. Couldn’t recommend this place enough.

Spent a few days in Norfolk with my son & his wife and ended our holiday eating at the Kings Head. We knew it was good as we visited Norfolk a couple of years back and had a good meal here. The staff were amazing, the young man in charge was an excellent host. My disabled son asked for a French trim for his chicken. It was done with a smile and no eyes raised. All our meals were excellent and when we visit Norfolk again we will definitely eat here.

The Ship Inn is absolutely ideal for a few days away with the long beach for great dog walks, really good comfortable rooms, great bar and restaurant and, above all, excellent friendly service.

Have popped in occasionally and had the most delicious pie and gravy. Was in the area Saturday and thought a lovely pie and gravy will go down a treat on such a cold day. Saturday luch time, no pies on the menu, just a very basic baguette, omlette, baked potato menu, really disappointed. Should have guessed, very sparse of dinners. Ordered the egg baguette, to be told a minute later 'we can't get hold of any eggs'. So all the omlettes were unavailable too. I've just been to a farmers market down the road that's full of eggs and pies! Cheese baguette ok, very cheap colesaw on side( sorry being really picky now). It has changed hands and don't believe the menu online, we won't be going back.

Wow what a find. the best place to eat for miles around if you have dogs with you as it is very dog friendly. We went for Sunday lunch and sat out on the covered terrace next to the lovely garden. There was a choice of 4 roast meats and a vegetarian option. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. The cost was also very reasonable. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The whole place has a lovely atmosphere.
