I came here with some friends as booked a table in the restaurant of Bebo Al Forno which is inside of the premises of the pub. The pizzas were amazing and taste how they should taste!! Will definitely be back for more but only as a takeaway as when went to the pub I wanted to get a bottle of wine for the table for my friends to share only for the bar staff to say they didn't have any bottles of wine. It's a pub!!! What pub doesn't have bottles of wine. Very disappointing Gun and Spitroast!

Waited at the bar for 5 mins because no one was present on arrival. This was despite a member of staff eating at the bar who could have easily alerted someone. We were passing and just wanted a cup of tea for two and a soft drink for our daughter. We were told they don’t have tea. As this is a pub with a restaurant, I found this very surprising. We were told to go to the village store instead! Appalling service and attitude!

Wonderful lunches: chicken and ham pies and shepherd's pie. The latter was a bit salty but tasty. Would recommend the chef uses Worcester sauce instead. Followed by the cheesecake and sponge pud, plus an ice-cream, we could not fail to enjoy the lot!

Great place for a family celebration, we had fourteen of us celebrating our Daughters 50th, from twelve years upwards and everyone agreed we could not have chosen better. Nothing was too much trouble, "if it's not on the menu just ask" we were told when I booked and I did, Steak and Ale pie was the best I have ever had, tender, tasty and plenty. All our Grandchildren, as well as the adults, loved their meals, the staff were all friendly and very efficient, the hostess made the evening special and the chef did a fantastic job. We shall certainly be returning in the near future. We were staying close by at Pittlands Cottages, which we can highly recommend. Accommodation was brilliant, as good as the photos on their website and the grounds are perfect for a lot of family fun. Also tried Curling at Fenton's Rink, excellent. We could not have had a better weekend.

We were in the area and the menu seemed to have the type of food that we were after, we were very wrong. I ordered the pate with “homemade” chutney... I was served shop bought, bland pate and a pot of branston pickle, which when I asked the waitress confirmed it was indeed branston pickle as the chef hadn’t made the chutney this week. We went on a Friday and this should have been told to us at the time of ordering. My main was even worse. Re-heated sausages (could see the dried fat they’d been sat in where they were clearly cooked earlier!) in a giant frozen Aunt Bessies style Yorkshire pudding with copious amounts of instant gravy. The chips were definitely not triple cooked and were honestly inedible. The waitress was pleasant but did not care that neither me nor my partner finished even half of our mains as they were just so bad. They removed the pate from the bill as I didn’t eat it, but nothing was offered about the inedible mains.

I visited on a Saturday evening with 2 of my friends. I had booked a table for 7pm and upon arrival we were sat down promptly and given menus. I chose the battered cod and chips and my 2 friends went for the bacon cheeseburger. The food came out with good time and I have to say having previously worked in a fish and chip van that the cod was beautifully cooked. Having been a local living in Horsmonden for almost 5 years now it has been always a pub to go to. My friends said there burger was delicious and soft. The portions were large which was great value and the chips were crispy.

We stumbled across this Pub whilst checking out Horsmonden for property on a crisp Sunday lunchtime. We had our small dog with us and were made very welcome by the restaurant manager and given a cosy table in the main Bar. We had the most delicious Sunday lunch we have had for a long time, homemade Pate for starters and the Roast Beef for us both, a very generous portion of meat and vegetables all piping hot. Dessert sticky toffee pudding and ice cream to finish off very nicely. The service was very, very good and the place has the real Pub feel with a good mix of all ages. If you are in the area give it a try, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

As we are local we were very interested to see what the new management had done with the Gun since they took over a couple of weeks ago and we have to say that the future looks promising. In these days of non-pubs let's say, it was very nice to find that this lovely old pub had been freshened up tastefully and there was a definative drinking area and eating area. Beer was very nice and the staff helpful, friendly and did pretty well despite being new. We sat in the restaurant area (we were the only ones unfortunetly) and we were served promptly and orders taken without fuss. The younger memebrs of the family said that their burgers were extremely tasty, while us oldies enjoyed our steaks, sausages etc., This is not gastro (thank goodness) this is good-wholesome pub food, reasonable well cooked at very reasonable prices and in H U G E volume.Let's hope it's successful; we'll certainly be back.

No-one wants to support a local amenity purely for the sake of it - so luckily, it's a real pleasure to pop to the Gun and Spitroast every so often and treat ourselves to their Sunday carvery. There are very few pubs still offering a carvery and, of those, the Gun and Spitroast is one of the best. The food is very reasonably priced and the portion sizes are excellent. There are always three different meats and all are beautifully cooked - as are the excellent selection of vegetables, yorkshire puds, etc. The staff are welcoming and friendly and i would happily recommend.

Years ago this was a wonderful old fashioned pub with an actual spit roast, soft lighting and lovely warm decor. It has in recent years been "updated", and now lacks any warmth or character. When we arrived there were several empty tables in the bar area so we were surprised to be told they were very busy with a party of 12 and a party of 4. Presumably these parties had pre-booked rather than just turned up, so I would have thought the restaurant would have made preparations. We were told if we gave them a minute we could have the carvery. We chose beef & turkey and the meat was very nice. However the veg left a lot to be desired. Rock hard carrots that were not topped & tailed or even peeled. Very large, tasteless, flabby roast potatoes and unappealing, pale broccoli. The yorkshire puddings were also rock hard and tasteless and (strangely) had lumps of stuffing in the centre. This stuffing was also served separately and was awful. The gravy was served in a thermos jug together with very small dishes of apple sauce, cranberry sauce etc. About enough for two in each dish. By the time we had walked back through the soulless restaurant to our table in the bar our food was tepid. We looked at the dessert menu but decided against it just in case. The carvery is over £11 each and unfortunately, on what we experienced, very bad value for money. The staff, however, were pleasant but we will not bother to go back - a shame.

The staff and atmosphere were excellent, but we were a bit disappointed that we could not all have turkey as there was not enough. How can it run out at 2.00pm on a Sunday?!?The beef looked delicious but was inedibleThe bill was for £102 and we had all chipped in extra for a tip, when one of our party noticed that 10% had already been added. I don't like that. Our "Pub walks in the Kent Hills" book (2009) lists the pub as having, "beef, pork and venison, that are roasted on a spit over an apple log fire in the huge inglenook fireplace"The fireplace has been boarded up and a non working log burner was placed on the wooden boarding, so no longer a spit. There was a large cannon in another corner of the restaurant, so maybe they should change the pub's name to just "Gun"

The location was good, Horsmonden is a nice little village that i have visited many times on my travels, its a very secluded and out of the way and because of this you would expect the local pub to have a friendly atmosphere to it but in fact its quite the opposite. The pub has a very shifty kind of atmosphere to it... alot of local drinkers there make you feel very unfriendly as a passer by. The food there was very average nothing special at all... bar service was very poor took us a while to get served (you would expect better service on a friday night too) and when we did finally get served it was not in a friendly manor, really wouldn't recommend to others. At one point i did overhear the bartender being rather rude and in fact raising his voice to a group of people in the pub, this was really making it hard for me and my group to enjoy our meal/drinks night out and because of this we decided to leave. we may decide to visit again in the future but not until the pub has changed it ways. very disappointing.

Three of us decided on the Gun as it was central for us to meet and hadn't been there for many years. Disappointed to see the spit in the inglenook had gone and replaced by a small cannon which did look attractive enough. We felt the restaurant lacked atmosphere. The food was average. My meal was luke warm and I was not charged for it which was good of them. Many places just give a weak apology. The young lady behind the bar was also the waitress. A charming, comfortable Inn overlooking the village green, plus a pleasant beer garden at the rear. There is a fine selection of draught ales as this Inn is an Independent. The Bar/ Snacks menu is wide-ranging, plentiful and tasty. The Staff were very welcoming, hard working & attentive. The only downside is that it doesn't stock non-alcoholic ales; given that the Inn is in a very rural location (which means car driving is the norm), the lack of catering for the driver is a grave marketing error.

Although our 1st priority was to watch the European Cup Final,we hoped that by getting here early,we might enjoy a typical village pub supper; home made;inexpensive and comfortably filling. Wrong on all counts - one ham salad with chips and one veggie pie (no other veggie choice) and both were poor. The ham was half OK then the rest undercooked and rubbery. The veggie pie was dry and flavourless. Both thin and thick cut chips would be unwelcome at a footie match. It's apparently now the 'only show in town' which is a pity for the locals, who'll have to journey a bit further for an acceptable and reasonably priced meal.

My wife and I went out for a late lunch recently at a pub we often visit. Unfortunately when we arrived there we discovered there was a problem with their kitchens and they weren't serving food (really must learn to phone ahead!) - so we set off to find somewhere else. Driving through Horsmonden we passed the Gun and Spitroast and realised we'd never been into this quite attractive village pub, so decided to give it a try.We didn't eat in the restaurant - it wasn't open at that particular time and we didn't want a full meal, just a light lunch. I had crab cakes and my wife had a grilled goats cheese salad and both were good - nothing outstanding but good, simple pub fare. What pulled the Gun and Spitroast above average was the friendly bar staff and some very well kept real ale. The pub is light and comfortable with a very pleasant beer garden to the rear. Well worth a visit if you're passing.

We were presented with a very short menu, 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 desserts or cheese and biscuits for an extra £3! Only 2 main courses available as the fish was finished. So roast beef or pork. At an increased, over-inflated price of £15.95 for the main course we expected a plateful. 4 mouth-sized pieces of pork, a spoonful of microwaved mash and a piece, yes 1 piece, of carrot with 2 spots of apple puree appeared looking, quite frankly, laughable on the plate. Apparently they have separated the now Austens Restaurant and the pub and gone up-market. Needless to stay after speaking to another customer who was still crying with laughter over the hilarious lemon meringue we avoided pudding and paid an extortionate £140 for what we had eaten. We stopped at the co-op on the way home and bought dinner for everyone. If you want up-market go to Ramseys or Blumenthal's where your hard-earned cash will be worth spending. Such a shame - from travelling 1 hour to visit somewhere so special to now we wouldn't go if it was next-door. If we had been told when we booked we would not have wasted our petrol.

As the title suggests, quick and friendly service. Reasonably priced food and they take taste card all week which was a bonus. Ate off of the bar snack menu, food was ok.

We had to go to Horsmonden on a Sunday, and by lunchtime we were hungry. Excellent old pub with a huge menu, very popular. We ordered the three-meat roast, at different times they have game versions in season. We got half a small chicken, a mountain of beef and pork, yorkshire, small sausage in bacon, apple sauce, stuffing, four different types of veg and real good gravy. We were stuffed good and proper. This was about £12 so not the cheapest but one of the best. Can't wait to get down there again. Good selection of beers for the serious beer person (I hate it). Good wine list for a pub. Plenty of local history bits and bobs for visitors. Car park.

We have been here before - it is a nice place. The food is quite good although some of the dessert/tart portions are on the very small side . . . Lunch was fairly good - but the wine grown locally in Canterbury was beyond awful . . . Barely passed for rose let alone red. Tasted weak and insipid and quite unpleasant - and for £10 a medium size glass beyond a joke . . .

We went for a special birthday lunch with a guest who is very hard of hearing. A table in a quiet alcove had been booked to cater for his disability. When we arrived, on time, this table had been given to others, seriously detracting from the experience. Whilst the staff on duty were friendly and helpful, there were not enough of them; the service was slow. Apart from the main course fish, the portions were very small. This particularly applies to the thimbleful of mushy peas served to my wife. The expense of refurbishment of this restaurant was wasted. The venue is letting down the reputation of Tunbridge Wells. We will not visit again.

Since retiring 12 years ago, we have had many meals , good, and indifferent at National Trust properties….this was undoubtedly the best. The menu board said “Chicken, Bacon and Tarragon Stew” which almost put me off! Glad it didn’t, as it was beautiful. In fact if it had been served in a French restaurant I would have been delighted. I very well run restaurant , definitely one of the best NT ones.
