We have been here before - it is a nice place. The food is quite good although some of the dessert/tart portions are on the very small side . . . Lunch was fairly good - but the wine grown locally in Canterbury was beyond awful . . . Barely passed for rose let alone red. Tasted weak and insipid and quite unpleasant - and for £10 a medium size glass beyond a joke . . .

We do shop in Fenwicks fairly regularly but have never used the in-store cafe and thought we'd give it a try. Sadly, we won't revisit. To my mind, Fenwicks sits just above the middle of the pack in terms of department store pack. Not at the Harrods or Fortnums scale but probably around the John Lewis level and so, it follows that the cafe should also share this status. There's not one single thing that makes it poor but rather a lot of marginal poor elements that when combined add up to a very disappointing experience. An example of this would be that I ordered a double espresso and my partner ordered a hot chocolate. Both made by the same barrista at the same machine. Hot chocolate takes a while longer to make than coffee, so to my mind, I'd make the hot chocolate first and then the coffee so that they were both piping hot. Instead, the coffee was put on my tray straight away and then I had to wait about four minutes for the hot chocolate, by which time my coffee was lukewarm. A sausage roll I ordered took an age to warm up and the mustard was some sort of sweet piccalilli offering and really not nice. The youngsters who work there mostly look bored and uncommunicative and have to be told to do obvious things like clear tables. And what is this thing - because it is a very annoying thing now, where everything that is put down at your table - in our case a missing knife - comes with an "Enjoy...." ??? The space is bright and airy but what could be a pleasant view from the glass side to the roof is just filled with depressing empty planters. And so it goes on. Everything is just underwhelming. OK, it's a store cafe. But it could just be so much better with not too much effort of wit and thought.

I go in with a group of friends for lunch weekly but the Eggs Benedict I had today were not what I would have expected for £8.50 - home cooked ham rather than a thin slice of pre packed tasteless plastic ham and I’d have been happy! It tends to be overpriced and the salads have gone up in price and smaller in size. Looking at the menu whilst waiting to order we noticed a 20cl glass of Prosecco was almost £12. That is a rip off!

A light, airy, clean restaurant with friendly helpful staff. My wife is Gluten Free and they did everything they could to make sure that what she wanted to have for lunch did not affect her. There's plenty of seating, both inside and outside, with a comfortable 'lounge' area, and it's both wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Our food was all freshly cooked and well presented. Good value for money.

Quick and chilled place to eat. Quite upscale a lot of tables but on our visit was almost empty! We only had sweet treats, and they tasted a lot better than they looked, brownie was soft and delicious. Scone looked hard but fluffy inside. Jam and Butter at extra cost, which seemed strange, just add it to the price of the scone, who would want a plain scone?!?!? Service was a little slow and lacking any personality, a lot of staff all seemley doing odd jobs, and not really keeping up with clearing tables.

Service is very slow each time I have visited for coffee. So much so I've left whilst waiting a few times. Other times the staff always forget the milk for the tea or something. The atmosphere is a bit lacking, with the mixed home/café design it feels dull and uninspired. I had a soup last time and it was ok but nothing amazing and I regretted it. Wouldn't go again.

Took my in-laws for lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We had a couple of favourites - deliciously fresh fish and chips and a few dishes from the new menu - a tender beef ragu and really good arancini. The Caesar salad is also a decent choice. The service was great, we were eating within 20 mins of arrival. We like the natural light in The Terrace - it’s a clean, bright and airy restaurant with spacious seating and a relaxed atmosphere. Handy on other occasions for a quick coffee and cake too!

Very disappointing after a 40 minute wait our food finally arrived and they weren’t busy. The soup had no taste and was watery. The shepherds pie was covered in horrible strong cheese which gave it a horrid twang and it was so small certainly not worth £12:95. The bottom of the dish was coated in oil too . All in all a waste of £53

Went to get peach melba but they have changed the recipe and it's not as good as it used to be, now consisting of a cake base instead of pastry. The pastry was very hard and difficult to get into with the fork and spoon provided, pastry very tough and fondent quite melted, not real fresh cream as advised by staff member, instead was small amount of peach flavoured cream. Also when I was looking at the hot food menu as I fancied some chips, I was advised that they were no longer doing any hot food at all, so would have to choose something else by a staff member. Then the women behind us ordered hot food and got chip and sandwiches brought to them... not as nice an experience as previous visits and hadn't been able to visit for the last 2 years due to health reasons.

Needed a good full english to I knew they did one here. It was fairly quiet for a late sunday morning so service was good and friendly staff. Initially sat near glass windows but such a draught we moved nearer the food serving area. A huge plateful of sausage, decent bacon, perfectly cooked mushrooms, eggs and tomatoes. Four pieces of toast that really needed a side plate. The flower boxes, I assume to block the view to the back of the multi storey car park, look neglected and quiet honestly awful. If they can't be maintained properly then why aren't they removed and replaced with a nice transparent roller blind with a flower/abstract motive on it? Sadly they don't do the restaurant decor and view any favours.

Went in for Sunday lunch, not much choice for vegetarians, so thought cannot go wrong with a mac cheese - wrong!. The pasta was underdone, the cheese sauce was thick and not tasty at all, the meal was also barely luke warm. It was supposed to come with garlic bread, it came with 2 pieces of toast, possibly with garlic butter spread on them. The cost was £11.25. Went into Fenwicks cafe with my family, after shopping with my 3 year old cousin we were hoping to find a few gluten and dairy free options on the menu. None of the food items are labelled of the menu as “gf” which meant we had to ask staff for assistance. Two girls behind the cafe counter were absolutely useless at providing us with assistance for gluten and dairy free options. Not feeling confident with the service, we decided we needed 5 minutes to discuss what we wanted to do. The two girls behind the counter walked away, laughing between each another at our “fussiness”. After seeing this reaction we left the cafe. How can you trust a kitchen to provide an allergy friendly meal with disgusting service like that. Our fussiness isn’t funny if my 3 year old cousin has an extreme reaction in the middle of your restaurant. If you are hoping for an allergy friendly menu, polite service and a kitchen that you can trust with allergies, this is not your place. Will not be going back.

The cafe is bright and welcoming and well set out. However, my recent experiences show me that the food doesn't match up to the environment. My husband had a sausage sandwich and basically that was that...sausage plonked into very underwhelming white bread. I had eggs on sourdough and the butter had very thoughtlessly been put on the hot plate, so it was just liquid. The cafe just doesn't show any imagination with food and although I'd go in for a cup of tea in future, I will steer clear of a meal.

We were passing through tunbridge so needed some lunch and I thought Fenwicks might offer a good range of choice - it did not disappoint. You can have savoury/sweet scones, a small or large salad plate, a range of hot meals or a choice of 3 sharing mezzes. We opted for the veggie mezze which included piccalilli, cucumber and yogurt dip, hummus, falafel, olives and flat breads. It was all delicious and a really good size for 2 people. Went for lunch today at Fenwicks cafe tunbridge Wells with my daughter and was extremely disappointed. We had to wait a long time for our food and although most tables were empty they were full of used crockery and littered with rubbish. When the food arrived it was very mediocre especially for the high price they charge. We had ordered two teas which were very weak and as we like strong tea my daughter asked if we could have two extra tea bags for the pots - after a member of staff went off to ask someone senior if this was okay they then said it would be a charge of £2.30 - disgusting we had already spent over £30 for our lack lustre lunch. We went for a special birthday lunch with a guest who is very hard of hearing. A table in a quiet alcove had been booked to cater for his disability. When we arrived, on time, this table had been given to others, seriously detracting from the experience. Whilst the staff on duty were friendly and helpful, there were not enough of them; the service was slow. Apart from the main course fish, the portions were very small. This particularly applies to the thimbleful of mushy peas served to my wife. The expense of refurbishment of this restaurant was wasted. The venue is letting down the reputation of Tunbridge Wells. We will not visit again.

Since retiring 12 years ago, we have had many meals , good, and indifferent at National Trust properties….this was undoubtedly the best. The menu board said “Chicken, Bacon and Tarragon Stew” which almost put me off! Glad it didn’t, as it was beautiful. In fact if it had been served in a French restaurant I would have been delighted. I very well run restaurant , definitely one of the best NT ones.

Four stars is too much and three stars too little. It is 12.5% cheaper to eat in the bar dining area as they don't levy service charge there - you order at the bar and fetch your own pizza from a shed outside. For pub food it is quite expensive. As a group of four, two had pizzas and they were very good. But they are only being served in summer apparently. They were large and well topped. We took some leftovers away which they kindly wrapped in foil (they need to invest in some boxes). The haloumi burger was good. It's hard to screw that up! My wife liked the thin chips but professed the roll top to be rather tough. So I ate it. I had fish and chips with smashed peas and thin chips. The fish had a rather wet "I've been frozen" feel to it and tasted of very little. The batter was good. The pea puree tasted strongly of mint, had no seasoning and was very watery. The chef here needs to taste what he produces. Fish and chips were 5/10. Interior was nice. Loos needed a proper deep clean and smelt very strongly of disinfectant. Mixed and mainly positive experience overall. We will try it again in due course.
