Since retiring 12 years ago, we have had many meals , good, and indifferent at National Trust properties….this was undoubtedly the best. The menu board said “Chicken, Bacon and Tarragon Stew” which almost put me off! Glad it didn’t, as it was beautiful. In fact if it had been served in a French restaurant I would have been delighted. I very well run restaurant , definitely one of the best NT ones.

Was looking forward to have some vegan cream tea! Appreciated that they had vegan scones, but no alternative to clotted cream. The (vegan and non-vegan) scones were disappointingly dry, unfortunately, and therefore not worth their price. Inside seating has a cafeteria feel. There's also outdoor seating, but when the weather is nice, the terrace is plagued by wasps...

We dropped in after a morning of vigorous garden inspection at Sissinghurst. There was a bit of a queue but their ordering system worked well. There were better than average menu possibilities but we went simple. I had an egg salad sandwich and she had a half roast potato with tuna salad plus two pretty good cappuccinos. Very pleasant place to sit down and eat. The service was very smooth and efficient and the staff were very friendly. We liked our visit and were soon ready to leap back into our garden investigations.

The hot food and salads here are lovely, but on this occasion we bought sandwiches to eat on a walk round the estate. Nothing good to say about the sandwiches, they were very un-NT, probably worse than a sandwich had recently from WH Smith’s at a motorway services, at least I knew what to expect on that occasion. They were tasteless on low-quality long-life bread. My egg mayonnaise sandwich was dry and tasted of nothing. My partner’s tuna mayonnaise sandwich was bland and watery with no taste of tuna. We took a look at the ingredients list - very very long including 10 E numbers 😱

We are here with our baby recently. We didn’t have a meal (just scones and tea) so difficult to review the food. We enjoyed it until I needed to change my son’s nappy and realised that they only put changing facilities in the women’s toilets. They said I could try the disabled toilets (outside) but they also had no changing facilities. This is 2024 - did you realise that dads also need to change their children’s nappies? I considered this to be pretty sexist and given it’s obviously been done up fairly recently. That said, as a new dad I’m not sure how long men have been changing nappies - perhaps it’s a new thing? Anyway - very disappointing and no apology from the staff when I brought it up. Next time if I come I’ll maybe change his nappy on your countertop and see whether that changes your perceptions? Come on guys - not hard to put a cheap folding nappy unit on the wall is it?

Not a shining example of customer service. Arriving at 3.30pm for a cup of tea and a scone I was presented with my tea in a paper cup. I asked for this to be put into a China cup and was told this wasn't possible because they had 'a lot of clearing up to do'. My cheese scone was leaden and served cold.

I was taken to Sissinghurst as a treat. I’d always wanted to visit. I enjoyed the gardens but felt lunch in this cafe really let the Sissinghurst experience down. I had a jacket potato with tuna and a ‘salad’ The plate was messy, rather as if a child had put the food on the plate and the ‘salad’ seemed to be a very poor version of coleslaw. It really needs improvement as it lets not only Sissinghurst but National Trust down.

When visiting Sissinghurst Gardens, be sure to leave time for a delicious lunch or cream tea in the restaurant/café. Very nicely located with seating inside and outside. Large selection of typical local dishes, all of which taste excellent, some of the ingredients come from our own organic garden. Staff very friendly and helpful. The cafe is very well run, the manager is always on site and has a nice word to say for everyone.

Long queues general bad attitude from staff, waited ten mins or so for the lady to bring a sandwich she ended up giving it to the wrong customer, luckily Fred the team leader noticed and bailed her out and brought half a sandwich to us! Lovely location, but despite buying coffees and beers at the cafe, we were told we weren't allowed to sit there due to bringing our own sandwiches, despite there being no signage to suggest we couldn't use the benches to eat our packed lunch. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to carry our tray of drinks all the way to the picnic area at the far end of the vegetable plot? This didn't seem realistic, and the picnic area was too far from the toilets for the person in our party with mobility issues. Appropriate signage outside the cafe and a picnic area closer to the garden entrance would solve this issue.

Lovely location, and excellent food and coffee. Experience was really let down by their dog policy, and the enforcement of it. They have a policy of no dogs (no issues with this), but no signage to say as such. They only mentioned this when we sat down, and asked us to go eat outside - where it was tipping it down with rain. When asked about the lack of signage, the reason was they “didn’t want to put people off”. Aside from that, we did have some lovely food in a great (but very damp) location

It is perhaps not fair to review the restaurant when, during the current lockdown, the proper restauarant is closed, except to praise the National Trust for opening up for take-away drinks and snacks, inevitably of a limited range. Housed in an old barn, social distancing was in place, the staff were very friendly and we finished our visit to Sissinghurst with coffees, cold drinks and flapjacks sitting out in the picnic area, enjoying the sunshine and the amazing views out over the Kent countryside. The also had some sandwiches available. At the back is the vegetable garden which in normal times provides the fruit and vegetables for the restaurant and, even though it has inevitably suffered during the lockdown was fascinating to explore and see the different vegetables and fruit.

We alerted the waitress who took the roll away and brought back a "replacement" at such speed, we could only hope that it was not the same one. The roll was rather bland to say the least. Came to visit the gardens and wanted a meal so came to the Granary. On offer a range of snacks, drinks, baked potatoes and the like plus a couple of 'main courses'. We both had poached salmon which was served with salad and was pleasant enough. Somehow I had hoped for a wider choice (some quiche and salad perhaps) but I suppose they have learnt to satisfy their own market and it is very much a captive audience. Anyway the serving staff were cheerful, the food nicely presented, prices reasonable and loos clean! What more could you ask. Tip: try avoiding the obvious busy period as sometimes tables are scarce even with the upstairs seating. In fine weather there are picnic type bench tables just outside the doors.

The Granary Restaurant is a perfect complement to the environment and ethos of Sissinghurst Castle, and well worth having lunch there if the restaurant is not too crowded. Tables by the large windows overlooking the countryside are particularly pleasant. Much of the menu is dictated by what produce is available from the Sissinghurst vegetable garden or elsewhere locally, and the meat available for some dishes is also locally sourced. My wife's mixed bean chili with fresh bread (£5.75), and my chicken in a smoked garlic sauce with carrots, cabbage and mash (£8.95) were both very good. My banoffee cake was drier than I expected, but my wife's salted caramel mouse was delicious. You need to queue cafeteria style to order, but then the food is brought to your table. We went on a Sunday in July, but the weather meant that it wasn't extremely busy, though there seemed to be more than enough space anyway. The food was very good, but unfortunately there seemed to be only one "proper hot meal" available; the rest was soups, sandwiches, etc.It was not made clear that those ordering food (as opposed to self service) should go straight to the head of the queue and cut in somehow, rather than follow the slow queue along the self-serve aisle, order food, then sit down and wait again for it to arrive. There were two tills, so the one on the right could be given a prominent "AND FOOD ORDERS" sign to alert the queuers that it was okay for the orderers to go straight to the till. Two of us had the Roast Lamb, which was lovely, and two had Soup and Rolls, which they also said were good. Sissinghurst is such a lovely place to visit that, to a certain extent, you will forgive it if their catering offer is on the basic side. Large visitor numbers very often result in mass catering, with all its shortcomings. So it comes as no particular surprise to find a pretty unadventurous menu. Our home-made mushroom soup was delicious, but it came with an enormous lump of unremarkable brown bread and just two pats of butter. All very dry and unsatisfactory. Add to this a pot of tea with a spout that directs the pot's contents far and wide across the table and you have a highly average experience.

After a muddy egg hunt, we trudged into the restaurant for a quick bite to eat and a well earned drink. The restaurant was busy with customers and plenty of staff. We only stopped for a tea and cake but were most impressed with the selection available. (Inc meals and light bites like steal and ale pie £9, jacket potatoes and soups) I chose the chocolate brownie, which happened to be gluten free; delicious! The restaurant was clean, tables constantly being cleared and customers tended to. Definitely coming back for lunch next time!

The food was well presented and although we were eating at a busy time on a day when there were a great many visitors we had no problem in being accommodated

The Trust can make good additional funds from a café or restaurant, and 'people expect it'. And we like a cup of tea or whatever, when we make a visit. But the sheer volume of people makes the self-service restaurant lose its heart and touch, and one joins 'the process', with unclear signage or where to order certain dishes and pay. It must confuse non-English visitors, of which there are many. The sausages and the freshly-made sandwiches were good, and came promptly and with a smile. One curiosity that seems strange for the Trust is why do they offer dishes on the menu which are not from these isles, for example Caesar salad and pannacotta? These are fashionable, enjoyable etc., but can be seen on most menus and chosen elsewhere. This seems at odds with the books the Trust produces, full of recipes from these islands, and the statement that food from the estate is used. The restaurant serves its purpose, but could do much more to convey the sense of place, even more so, given the high number of visitors from other countries.

Nice restaurant set in the grounds of Sissinghurst Castle. Good selection of food, reasonably priced for a National Trust property. Beautiful grounds to sit in an enjoy your refreshments. The "homemade" lemonade is delicious

A very odd system of ordering, meaning you have to queue twice.So-so food, though reasonably priced. Local beer, but not local wine - why ?I wouldn't go again.

Busy on sunny days and during holiday time. It has a large picnic field in front and tables and chairs in the foreground as well as inside. We just had a snack, cream ta, walnut and coffee cake and some superb, natural, lemonade!

Been here many times over the years, its easy to use and we can usually get a table ok .The food is generally basic but acceptable.However......when is liquidised piped potatoes "mashed potatoes"??? I had sausages and mashed potatoes . The sausages were nice but were presented sitting on a potatoe slush.. I pointed this out to the lady catering manager and she replied that this piping method (pre liquidised) to last a day or two, was the way they do it. I suggest they re- train and/or alter the menu to describe the dish correctly. I suspect they think its ok to microwave baked potatoes and still describe them as baked!

The Granary Restaurant prides itself on selling food produced on the castle's own farm. The food is very good and the atmosphere is enjoyable. There can be a long wait in the self-service queue as the restaurant is totally inadequate for the demand at peak times, and finding somewhere to sit can be a nightmare.

This is the restaurant inside the National Trust Sissinghurst Castle. We arrived about 2 pm so were too late to catch a pub outside, so we had decided to press on and eat within the NT grounds, as we usually find good fare available. This restaurant is outside the Castle entrance, but after reception, and has both inside and outside seating. You take a tray, take your drinks and/or dessert, and then go to the till to order your main course and pay. You are asked if you will be inside or out, and given a numbered flag to put on your table for the food to be delivered. We ordered a Caesar salad, and a flan and salad. The flan came within a couple of minutes, and the server asked rather abruptly, what the other dish was, and then went and brought it back immediately, but put it down and left without a word. Absolutely no complaints about the speed of service, but the attitude of the server was not "customer friendly", a fact re-enforced when we heard her speaking to other customers at other tables. Minor improvement here would be good. The Flan was very good, and so was the Caesar salad. The only criticism is that the dish it was served in was very full, and the salad leaves uncut, so the only way to get to the salad leaves was to dig down in the dish, and because they were large enough to cover the whole bottom of the dish, in pulling them out to cut, you end up pulling the other ingredients out of the dish onto the table. A minor thing, but it would make it so much easier to eat if the leaves were cut up.

We came to the gardens and castle which was absolutely wonderful! We (a friend and I) always eat at the national trust restaurants. We did so this time. I had soup my friend had a sandwich. There was very little choice cheese or egg, we could not order with the staff on the section that had bread, we had to order where you pay which caused queues as people did not only have to pay but also order and pay.this order then had to be sent to the kitchen. A previous person said they had to wait a long time, I think the system could have had something to do with it! So we queue at the cash desk for ages meanwhile my soup was uncovered. When we did sit down I found my bread was extremely dry, I went and asked for a new pieces the member of staff did not give me a piece from the bread basket but went and cut a new piece (I saw her do this) which was much nicer. I had almost finished my soup by the time my friends sandwich came! The soup and sandwich were ok (apart from bread) the problem is more the system. It was disappointing and I hope the restaurant might consider another method of ordering food.

As members of the National Trust we try to support them even if only by using the restaurants. We usually have good experiences but not this time. At £8.00 for "local sausage and mash" I did expect a little more than 2 sausages on top of a pile of mash - even if the onion gravy was tasty. There were no accompanying vegetables. My partner chose a cheese and broccoli flan with "Sissinghurst leaves" - yes, they were nice and fresh but tiny portions and the dressing was acidic. Rather poor show for the £8.25 we paid for that also. It might be a nice old building but the price for what we got was ridiculous. By 4.00 pm we were so hungry we had to eat again - and we generally have pretty small apeptites - never again!

We ordered two salads and was advised that it will be 20 Minutes for the salad to be made. Well 50 minutes later I had to ask the manager where our salads where, she went to the kitchen and advised they are on the way. We paid £17.80 and the Hock Terrine was fozen reported this to staff and advised thats how it comes FROZEN I don't think so. Dangerous. Reported to Staff and the Day Manager.

The food at the Granary Restaurant at Sissinghurst castle is one of the best places for top notch food if a little on the expensive side. unfortunately at lunchtimes there is always a long queue and the service area a bit cramped making it a bit of a 'bun fight' especially as I have to get my own and my disabled husbands meal at the same time to avoid queuing twice.

We have been here before - it is a nice place. The food is quite good although some of the dessert/tart portions are on the very small side . . . Lunch was fairly good - but the wine grown locally in Canterbury was beyond awful . . . Barely passed for rose let alone red. Tasted weak and insipid and quite unpleasant - and for £10 a medium size glass beyond a joke . . .

Great old fashioned service with friendly staff. Dog friendly Well kept beer (only one hand pull on) Menu simple but tasty. Dropped in having driven past many times and they were well paced with service and friendly. Will be back.
