We had our wedding reception here for 16 people on the 28/9/24. We were in a separate private room. The Management could not have been more helpful leading up to our day. The food was excellent, all served at the same time and service second to none. The staff were lovely. Excellent service. It was perfect. It was a wonderful afternoon. Could not fault anything. We have eaten there twice before and always been very happy with the service and the food

Very pleasant pub with nice atmosphere, very clean and nicely laid out dining area. Staff very pleasant and welcoming, not intrusive. Food was really nice and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Portion sizes were just right, lovely pate, Cumberland sausage and mash perfect, two in the party had Hake which they thought was very good, in the end all had deserts and all left very satisfied. Worth the visit and be suprised if you were disappointed.

Beautiful, tasty Sunday lunch. The service was fabulous and they went out of their way to make our elderly guest feel so welcome. The food had 'taste', which isn't always the case in pubs. We all commented on the quality of all the veg. The beef was lovely and about double of what we would have expected. We've eaten here before with relatives and are not surprised it's their favourite .

This place has such potential with its building, location and staff, but the food let's it down. Last time I ate here they were so accommodating we were grateful for whatever they were able to offer, but on returning today someone warned us not to have a roast, but still my mum wanted one. The roast potatoes were so hard and not crispy, she couldn't eat them. My risotto was ok, but really lacked flavour and the rice was undercooked, with too much of a crunch to it.

My family and I were really looking forward to a Sunday roast for a family member’s birthday. One of our party was vegetarian and the other vegetarian (but extremely dairy intolerant). They ordered their usual vegan nut roast which comes with veg, olive oil roasted potatoes and mushroom gravy, only to be told the nut roast had changed to vegetarian as it now had cheese in it. Instead they were offered a salad or a soup when everyone around them was enjoying full plates of roasted food. I asked the waitress why they couldn’t just have an extra roast potato or two? It would have been such a simple solution but she didn’t seem to comprehend the request. Instead they were given a tomato based vegetable tart - with gravy!! Plus all of us had to wait for our food for nearly an hour whilst it was sorted out. Just a heads up for the Grouse and Ale, Pieminster Jackfruit Mooless pies can be kept in the freezer and only take 25 minutes to cook. If a restaurant makes the plant based dishes vegan they can be enjoyed by all but as soon as you make it vegetarian, anyone vegan or dairy intolerant can’t eat it. And there was absolutely nothing vegan for dessert so my friends had to sit there and wait whilst the rest of us ate ours. We won’t be able to go back there any more as my poor friends felt excluded and disappointed, plus we were charged full price for their disgusting meals. Vegan food is not difficult.

Really enjoyed our Sunday lunch here. For starters, we had the mozzarella sticks and the ham hock & chicken terrine, both were very tasty. Then for mains we had the pork roast and the fish and chips, both dishes were flavourful and had a generous portion size. For dessert, we really enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding and the apple & blackberry crumble. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend this pub to couples, families and dog owners!

We sat in the garden with a nice beer then ate dinner in the bar (lovely!). The food is phenomenal, double cheeseburger is one of the best we’ve tried (would highly recommend!). As for the desserts, so good! We had the sticky toffee and chocolate delice. You can tell by the quality of the food that their chefs really do care about giving customers the best experience. Thank you so much, we can’t wait to return again soon. Love Emma & Mike xx

Looking for a nice pub in the area & found this place on Tripadvisor. Booked a table & warm welcome when we arrived. Lovely waitress called Emily Blake, which was bizarre as that is my daughter's name. We ordered the beef sandwich & was recommended the chicken Saltimbocca. It was delicious. Beautiful period building, polished cutlery and proper napkins. Our initial waitress mustve been her first day as she didn't know the menu or the drinks but the lady who served us after was really good and gave excellent service. The camembert starter with truffles was tasty although out order came with plain white toasted demi baguette and the other one came with posh wholemeal bread, we would've preferred the choice. Main was the four carne pizza which was about a 7 out of 10, not many toppings but good flavour and base was average. The waitress didn't know the size of the pizza when asked. The pie looked much better option with rich mash and thick gravy which my brother in law had and he said it tasted delicious. My wife had the beef sandwich and she really enjoyed it and the beef was very tender. Not every meal ordered felt like it was the same standard of quality unfortunately but still tasty. Good range of alcoholic drinks and non alcoholic Guinness which I had. Good range of soft drinks too. Spoke with the manageress after and she was excellent and really friendly.

Knowing how popular this place is I was surprised to be able to book a table for Sunday lunch at only a couple of hours notice. However, there was no table for us when we arrived ("the people on your table are about to have dessert"), we were told we could order food in the bar (packed, noisy, no clean tables available), or have a drink and wait for our table. We elected to wait, but when the manager (I think?) person again came over to tell us we could order food in the bar we elected to vote with our feet. Don't bother trying to eat here at anything like a popular time, they will allow you to book a restaurant table but then not have one available.

We stopped here on our way to Oxford for lunch. The welcome was friendly and welcoming, and the pub itself is historic and tastefully decorated. The waitress was engaging and attentive and knew the menu. The starter of artichoke and feta salad was substantial and delicious, not overly dressed, which is how it should be. Very good quality ingredients as well. The cod with clams main was well executed and represented good value for money. The brie and peppers sandwich was nice but too much bread, lots of peppers but could have done with more cheese. The espresso was authentic and served in the correct cup. Overall very good food and service at a fair price. We will return.

We booked dinner for a family reunion we always enjoy the weekend after New Year. Again, the Grouse & Ale did not disappoint! Tom was our host and he was brilliant! Lighthearted banter with the group, precise review of each order, drinks served promptly. The food was divine and the wine choices were superb. The bar staff were friendly and efficient. My elderly father-in-law wanted the day fish and chips, which is normally too large for him, so he was offered a smaller portion which was perfect for him. We had not been here since it had a refurbishment. We came to meet with some friends who we hadn’t seen for some years. We were shown to a nice table in the restaurant and menus were bought. For me I was not impressed with the choices on offer, there was a “special’s” menu which was no better. When the waiter Alex, came to take our order, although friendly, he was very pushy, trying to persuade us all to go for the specials and encouraging us to go large on the drinks and order bottles of wine instead of glasses. This continued throughout our meal. 3 of us ordered the fish & chips, 4 ordered the steak pie and 1 ordered the muscles. We all agreed that the food we had was very good, I would have liked more choices of good British dishes without the addition of other flavours like fennel or hazelnuts. I’m not sure if I would eat here again, I may go in for a drink.

My friends & I have been eating here regularly for years now - I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Indian or Nepalese cuisine (a good selection of really tasty dishes, good value and catering for different levels of spicy 'heat') and they're serving some more 'traditional' pub fare again now, too. They know how to look after their ales and have a selection of lagers, plus cider and all the usual drinks you'd expect to find in a pub. The staff are great - friendly & helpful, get to know their regulars and I've lost count of the number of times that I've just been thinking that "I ought to go and order food" when, as if by magic, someone will appear to take my order. The place is divided into separate 'restaurant' and 'pub' sections, with a good-sized beer garden in front, so you can pick your preferred setting for food &/or drink. There's a decent car park in front, too, with free parking for customers.

Turned up for a late lunch with the family, told 'we don't do food, haven't for years'. Decided to stay for a drink; slow service, rude (bar staff just stood there staring at us), and then some kid tried to sell us drugs from a menu on his phone. Real classy place. Certainly won't be returning.

All 3 of us had a roast as my daughter tried one last year and was really good. The roast beef was excellent, the veg was good, maybe needed a few more carrots and less oil on the veg. The roast potatoes were a let down as we had 3 each and they were the size of new potatoes. We saw others having the roast and they seem to have the same amount for 2 people. We ordered cauliflower cheese as a side, was ok but only had 2 florets and a few tiny pieces in the dish and wasn’t worth the £4.50.

The bar staff were nice, allowed me to have a peaceful drink while ordering from the pop up food market which was amazing!
