The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

Stayed for one night in the hotel with my father before he headed off on holiday. The Grill Bar/restaurant was very nice. The food was very nice too.

I used to go to Stanneylands many years ago under previous owners. The hotel and restaurants have undergone a massive refurbishment over the last 18 months. We were a family group of 3 and given a beautiful table in the window and near the superb Christmas tree. The restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday evening with only 2 other tables occupied, so slightly lacked a true restaurant experience. Cannot fault the excellent service with being attentive but not overpowering. House champagne and cocktails were of good quality. The menu had a small but good choice. My starter of lobster salad was faultless and no skimping on the amount of lobster. Fillet steak cooked exactly to guest requirement. I had the trout with perfect accompanying. Leave room for desserts as all good. Perfect place for a romantic meal. The Grill room is beautiful retaining all the oak panelling and has the most comfortable dining chairs. Smooth piped music in the background and of the correct volume. This place is a GEM hidden inside a relaxed small hotel. Plenty of parking and very easy to get to I am looking forward to an immanent return. People need to remember and know it is still there as it retains its reputation for fine dining in superb surroundings It is back on my list.

We had lunch in the Grill restaurant today for the first time, in fact it was our first time ever in the Stanneylands Hotel. What a disappointment, made worse by the fact that we took my elderly parents. The restaurant itself is really nicely decorated in a modern yet traditional style. It should have been warm & cosy given that it was only 9* outside, but the room was chilly & I had to keep my coat on to feel comfortable. Service was extremely polite but desperately slow. Our lunch was timed for 12.30 & we didn't leave till almost 3pm. In that time we each had a starter, main course & dessert, no tea or coffee. But there were long gaps between courses. I won't go into detail about the food, it was so mediocre. The menu was fairly standard fare, with roast beef, roast pork, etc. But having been asked if I would like my beef medium or well done, I was brought three thick slices of very well done beef, which to be honest were tough & very over cooked. I did not make any complaint to the restaurant as we had guests & I didn't want to make a fuss. Suffice to say I was so disappointed I think it likely we won't go back. Maybe it was a bad day there, who knows? The hotel itself is very nicely decorated & recently refurbished.

We chose to go to the Stanneylands for a family birthday celebration because we have been going there for years and heard that it has been recently refurbished. Well the refurbishment is total success in my view, it is beautifully appointed. But the food service was very, very slow, we were a table of 10 and there were only three other tables occupied in the main "Grill Room"; so the place was not busy, they just seemed unable to cope with more than a couple of diners, all the other people in the restaurant came and went in the time we were sitting down. Food in general was a good standard and nicely presented, but there were complaints around our table of it being over-priced and very small portions. I ordered a scallop starter with black pudding; there were two scallops and a squirt of pureed black pudding roughly the same as the amount of toothpaste you put on your brush. The waiting staff were very apologetic and when the head waiter got involved he insisted on bringing us free bottles of wine, which we did not really want or ask for.

Great to be able to eat outside although the seating isn't comfortable to sit at whilst eating. The food was good quality although very slow to receive it. Cakes are delicious and big slices.
