The Griffin Inn in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Friendly, helpful staff. Nice atmosphere. We had a Sunday Carvery, the meat was cooked perfectly. We felt however that there could have been a wider selection of vegetables.

This is our second visit to the griffin and it was an average carvery. Roast potatoes were pretty poor and nut roast wasn't much like a nut roast. The service was okay. We weren’t told whether it was table service or not and the young girl had to be told to clear our table as well and take our dessert order. She cleared the table, but didn’t take the order. The other woman who was in our area spent most of her time talking to another family and it was only when we approached her she actually started doing her job. I probably wouldn’t come back as there are much nicer pubs around the area.

Consistently great, Staff are so helpful, nothing is too much trouble. A great selection of beers on tap. A fantastic family atmosphere

Absolutely outstanding from first to last. The barman and two female servers were friendly and efficient. I was seated quickly and in a nice spot. I ordered the grilled hake with pea and spinach and it was perfect. The skin was crispy, the peas bright green and ‘popping’ and the rice with just enough bite. I opted for a half pint of cider to go with it and the bill came to £19.50! Incredible value.

Don't get to Newquay as much as I used to, but whenever I do the first booking I make is for the Sunday carvery. Never disappoints and I always end up stuffed. Hopefully not too many people read this or it might be booked up the next time I go.

We received a warm welcome and found to have a friendly atmosphere children and dog friendly. We all enjoyed the food it was fresh tasty and cooked well all arrived quickly. Would recommend all within walk of Newquay Town but has little carpark on site

The Griffin had friendly staff, but once seated nobody comes over, the food was very average. Don't think I would go there again

Can highly recommend this place the staff were lovely especially Polly and Molly who was very friendly and welcoming , the steak was absolutely beautiful, . All in all a fantastic meal and great staff will definitely be going back .

Beautiful tasty sunday lunch, with lots of choice. Staff lovely, friendly & helpful. Had to eat in the bar as we had a dog with us, but it’s still lovely, clean and comfortable.

Newquay does not have any real fine-dining restaurants that I could find but I really did want to find something that was a bit better than your normal pub grub fare and the Griffin was certainly that. My wife and I dined here on three occasions during our stay in the town without booking and the food was very good. I was introduced to a very nice wine as well by the waitress as they did not have anything close to my usual choice, so well done to her. On the third visit, we did feel less welcome; more conveyor belt let us get them through the system as fast as we can and it was not the same team as we had seen on the previous occasions so we just had a main course and left it at that. From our experience, this was the best food the town centre could offer.

Popped in for dinner, managed to get a table for two though I would recommend booking. Very good quick friendly service, both meals we had were good (chicken tacos and Philly Steak sarnie) very nice little boozer.

Stopped for a glass of wine when we arrive and it was nice, locals and visitors all mingled well and the service was good too Ordered the Sunday lunch delivery and it was spot on. Plenty of it and tasted great too

We went on May 9.5.21 when Lockdown was still on, you couldn’t eat inside. We had their Carvery, we were asked whether we wanted adult or children’s portions, we said adults, there was so much, we chose beef & turkey, we had loads of meat & it was really tender, then their was two different types potatoes, swede parsnip broccoli cauliflower peas & carrots, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing, it was one of the best carveries we have had, too much, to be honest. And then we had sticky toffee pudding & warmed brownie with ice cream. All the staff were so lovely & helpful. We would recommend coming here, to anybody. We went next day with family, all of our meals were delicious again. We will definitely come again.

Back to Newquay as soon as we were allowed and found not much open. Tried to get a drink in a couple of bars and were met by indifferent staff and you cant come in without the app.On the way back to the car we decided to try the Griffin. Like a different world welcomed in by super helpfull and friendly staff and had a superb pint of Doombar. Went back the following evening for a meal which was excellent and again the staff could not do enough for us. With the great food and drink and the brilliant people that work there they deserve a quick recovery from the lockdown and we will certainly be back when we are down again hopefully soon

We went here for the roast which my partner I had but I chose something else as the menu looked great. The staff where absolutely the most friendliest staff!woukd highly recommended

We booked the Griffin Inn as last minute get away and I’m glad we did as I could not recommend this place enough . The service , staff and atmosphere was fantastic even during these troubled times and the food both nights was excellent and very reasonably priced.Our room was spotlessly clean ,warm and comfortable with a partial sea view which was a nice surprise . Social distancing was well maintained throughout the bar and restaurant and all the staff were all friendly and helpful We ate in the restaurant on our first night and all the food was homemade and fresh it was so good we booked it again for our second night We would highly recommend the Griffin inn and will definitely return in the future

Went with wife for Sunday roast then another meal the next night. Very welcoming and friendly staff, good ambience. Both meals excellent, good prtions, home made food, excellent value. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Only stayed for a couple of drinks just needed a little sit down. Felt safe had to write down we had been here because of covid all measures in place. Seats outside all spaced out , not bad price for drinks either.

Ate here twice during our stay, both times friendly service and good value good pub food and a decent pint of hand pulled ale.

We are regulars last there 3 weeks ago, all good . Today was awful. The roast parsnips & potatoes were white with no signs of being roasted, bland and not crispy at all. The roast was served to you at the table but afte no one asked what you would like on your plate. Even when i asked a member of staff to come over to ask her not to put peas and carrots on the plate it arrived with lots of peas, carrots making up a third of the plate. No broccoli which i had asked for and just one piece of cauliflower which id asked for a generous portion of because i am a vegetarian. Will not be going there again now until things get back to normal when you can serve yourself. They should be asking or writing down what you would like on your plate and not assume.

I stayed at the Griffin Inn for a week the breakfast was amazing and the Sunday Lunch it was all super good, the staff were all lovely especially Kat on reception, Phil, Martin Ed and everyone else. I had room one which had a sea view and a brand new bathroom, the bed was super comfy and was given an extra duvet as I was cold, big tele couldnt fault it and would recommend any one that want a break I had the best time.

I ordered the fajitas, which came with 5 small pieces of chicken and a few onions, for the price that seem tight. Tasted OK, just not good value for money. Staff and service good though.

We looked at the reviews for this place. We liked what we saw so we tried it. Brilliant food and the staff are great too. The food came out, pleasantly presented, looked great and tasted fantastic. The Belly pork is to die for!!

We happened to come into this location due to how the reviews were positive and the capable COVID rules were implemented, the food and staff were great, we ate of the specials menu and it was absolutely amazing. We were enjoying our selves however the evening took a turn for the worse.Unbelievably a table of 10! had walked in, bless the girl greatly they tried to turn them away and worked hard on doing so, however, in the end, they were sat down near us, as a table of 6 and a table of 4, the whole atmosphere of the room changed, they were rude, and damn right dissrecptful. The other guests were clearly upset.The management should have kicked them out. Really put a sour note to what was a fantastic evening.

Me and my partner stayed here for 3 nights and couldnt believe how lovely and comfortable this hotel was. The hotel was not only in a great location but served up tasty food as well, especially the carvery!Being opposite a wetherspoons I thought it might be noisy at night but I couldnt believe how quiet it was once i shut the window, and we were facing right onto the street.Parking is tight in the hotel and there was one occasion where we came back and there wasnt any spaces. Luckily a restaurant customer was leaving or I don't know where we would have parked We really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be returning!

Stopped off to have a quick drink and to book for the 'pie carvery' night that was advertised online as we couldn't book a table online.Turns out that they don't do this anymore, suggested they update the website but didn't get a response.Stayed for a drink anyway but have to admit that the place felt very dated and more of a 'local' rather than a place to draw the visitors in.Shame as we were staying so local and fancied the idea of a 'pie carvery'

Just been to the Griffin for a Sunday carvery, this has to be the best carvery I have ever had. The staff were fantastic, and efficient at their jobs, coping amazingly with rules for covid. The food was absolutely delicious, with superb value for money. I Would recommend to anyone

Came in for lunch. Really good quality bar food and very plentiful. The steak pie was homemade and full of tender steak. The Ploughman’s was huge and came with dressed salad, chutney, piccalilli, grapes and hot crusty bread and butter. The sides of cheesy chips and onion rings were each enough for 2 people! Don’t be put off by the exterior, it’s lovely.

We have just had a lovely dinner in the griffin. It had excellent food, great service and wonderful staff. The sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream was divine

The food was really nice and the lad serving was really nice just a shame he was left on his own to do everything and could hardy keep up with it all specials on a Saturday lunch time.

Evening meal and tables in back dining room. Told we had to order food at bar. The drinks also. You had to ho to back of queue. Unimpressed and even more so when found out front dinning room had full waitress service. Strongly complained to manager for a second rate very poor service when we paid same money for our meals. He advised with back dinning open it couldn't be mananaged. My advice to him get in more staff yo offer the proper service yo all your customers or don't open it up just to make more money and treat customers like they are in the school dinner queue. Totally disgusted

Went to Newquay for 4 days . We went to the Griffin a few times . Very busy place I found it was organised Chaos . Its hard due to the Covid restrictions however you have a man barking his orders to his staff who are doing a great job and actually rushed off their feet . We had a Sunday carvery which was really nice . Would definitely recommend the food it’s a lovely place . I would definitely go back it’s lovely outside and lots of seating and in a perfect location

Came to Newquay for 3 nights. Ate here the first night and was so impressed we ate here the next 2 nights as well. Lovely staff (Steph) and amazing food. Decent portion size and reasonably priced. Hubby had the belly pork twice it was so good. Next time we come to Newquay we are going to book accommodation here

Managed to get a table Friday evening after a long drive. Place looked tidy inside. Really enjoyed the hunter's chicken,decent size portions aswell for a reasonable price. Staff friendly enough. Would recommend any visitors to try it out.

Managed to get a last minute 1 night stay for myself and my husband for a last minute getaway. Free parking on site. We arrived hours before our check in time and after talking with the young ..cheerful and very helpful receptionist she checked to see if our room was ready and it was which was a bonus for us. Room very adequate with a partial sea view. Lovely spacious shower cubicle. I will definitely be returning and staying here as we are frequent visitors to Newquay. Also paid a very good price.

We stopped here for food and a drink without booking, they accommodated us outside food was ok and beer cold with local cornish gin, visited 2 more times throughout our stay each time found seating outside with very little wait considering the crowds nice all round pub. PS the carvery looked really nice.

Shocking all round, wasn’t even busy but took over an hour for food to arrive, food was freezing cold so when finally did arrive so couldn’t even eat it, when mentioned to the waitress she just said she’d pass it on to the chef, but didn’t do anything about it. They didn’t care, all they wanted was the money in the till. Poor customer service, not once did waiting staff come over to ask if we would like more drinks. Not socially distanced, Witnessed two sets of different customers on table next to us and Tables were not cleaned between customers, totally unacceptable in these current times.

Cold dishes, dirty vegetables, a food looks and taste disgusting. Waitress are not nice for customers. Not recommended !

Booked weeks ago due to the Covid situation and arrived tonight to find the kitchen was closed due to an electrical fault (very small notice displayed outside). Nobody rang us to cancel and they had our number. Wouldn’t bother again!!!

Surprised at the preceding reviews, we visited around the same time - 23rd July. We booked a table in the restaurant, not the carvery as we were not aware of it. Glad we booked as it soon filled up. The service was very good and the food excellent. Pricing of drinks and food was competitve with most other establishments, excluding Wetherspoons, for obvious reasons, which, unfortunately for The Griffin, is just across the road. But, if you want good food in a proper dining restaurant with personal service, without all and sundry brushing past you all the time, then The Griffin is the better choice.

Booked a table for 7.30 as we were advised too due to the pandemic legislation. We arrived at 7.28, we were shown to a table that a child was sat at that should have sanitised. I went to the bar as instructed to order our meal only to be told that there was an hour wait. I informed the bar staff that I had booked a reservation for 7.30 and the reply was, everyone arrived at once! I booked a table for god sake. We just walked out, I wasn’t giving them my money with a service like that.

had the beef carvery on july 19, have to say it was the worst meal i have ever had, it was lateish on the sunday the plate was on the small side but pilled high with every thing you could think of from a carvey, food terrible,apart from the beef , it looked like they threw everything on my plate becuase they were ready to stop serving food,I know it was hard due to covid and not been able to go and serve yourself but it would have been nice to have been asked what i wanted off the carvery intead of just throwing the lot on,i dont like cheese but got cheese cauliflower, also got yorkshire pudding stuffed solid with stuffing??, My wife got a wrap and that too was cold and hardly touched,all in all a waste of money,avoid

Food tastes terrible and is overpriced.Same as the drinks,With a weatherspoons across the road you definitely want to go there and avoid the Griffin Inn

Ordered a takeaway Sunday lunch but decided on collection to eat it in. All Staff were so accommodating - bringing plates etc. The food was delicious and would certainly recommend. The staff are working very hard to make all this work thro this pandemic. Everything in place. Hats off to them. Thank you all for making this a very pleasant experience.

Absolutely made up with our visit. During covid we have struggled to go anywhere having a large family but the Griffin Inn was so welcoming and sorted us out with a table for food and drinks even when the kitchen had closed 5 minutes before our arrival. Very pleasant staff and the food is amazing!! We will be coming back during our weeks holiday! Fantastic!

Mum and dad have had several Griffin carveries and desserts delivered to their house during Covid. They've really enjoyed the food - there's loads and it's piping hot, and delicious and delivered on time so they've been very happy with the service.

These guys provided the yummiest takeaway roast with all the trimmings! Can't wait to visit again when they reopen!

Excellent nice welcome as we walked into reception lovely clean and well laid out room no traffic noise what so ever . We ate in the restaurant it was not over priced the food was hot and very very nice thanks the staff are very pleasant and well mannered we were impressed overall good value for money after a busy we we'll go home relaxed

We ate here on a Wednesday evening and opted for the carvery, which was lovely and very reasonable at £9.95 for and adult. The staff were very friendly and we had a brilliant service. Would thoroughly recommend.

This is a great little pub/ restaurant, with a decent menu and reasonably priced bar. The owner is justifiably proud of his business and is very hands on, in all aspects of the bar and restaurant. I didn't eat here on this visit, but witnessed some lovely presented meals being served and consumed.They have a small car park, but not sure if it's free, free WiFi and TV...presumably showing live sports?Highly recommended.

My husband and I have visited this restaurant twice in the last few days on a visit to Newquay, we enjoyed it so much the first time we came back again!

Go for the Cavery which is excellant. The food at other times is also excellant. The staff are Great. One of the best eateries in Newquay and one which we visit on a regular basis. Keep it up Griffin.

Visited on Sunday evening on spec and even though they were busy they managed to fit us in. Had a burger and ham, egg and chips everything was lovely. Booked for the following night and was again impressed. We had slow cooked belly pork and steak and ale pie. All the food is piping hot, fresh and flavourful. Will definitely visit again. They can cater for larger bookings as they just shift a few tables round. Servers friendly but not too pushy. Highly recommend.

Had the task of booking a place for xmas dinner, so pressure was on to find a good place. Griffin inn did not disappoint. Food was perfect. Hot, flavoursome and staff were friendly. Somewhere I would visit again for a roast. Well worth a visit.

Visited with my best friend on a weekend that had originally been planned for May. The hotel were really good about letting me hold on to the booking after Boardmasters cancelled even though the booking agent online had said that the booking was lost.

After a long walk we discovered this little gem of an inn. With a lovely sunny and shaded areas in a pretty beer garden. It is a modern building giving the impression of a motorway inn, far from it. It is a family run business and the inside has the feeling with the decor and furnishings of a British country inn. With a comfortable bar area and a lovely set out restaurant. It is situated on the northern edge of Newquay close to the town centre,beaches and cliff top walks, offering whatever type of holiday you choose. We visited there for two evening meals and were not disappointed they were plentiful and delicious. We were offered the opportunity to inspect their en suite accommodation, it is clean reasonably spacious and looks very comfortable. On our next visit to Newquay this definitely will be our choice of accommodation.

saw a sign saying griffin inn driving to NEWQUAY . quite surprised to discover it in the centre of town looked at the menu and it was attractive and well priced. On Monday ate of the menu and enjioyed on Wednesday and Thursday enjoyed the carvary and on Friday thought the two fish and chips for £12 was good to eat and value

Had a fantastic time staying at The Griffin Inn, friendly staff, comfortable rooms,food absolutely wonderful. Close to all amenities, would highly recommend, cant wait to go back early next year.

On the day we visited it was a cold and damp October day and so the place was warm and welcoming for a few drinks. Great location and exterior appearance that would be great during warmer climes. Some good choices of beers on tap and interactive staff made for a good experience. We didn't eat here this time (have done so before) but from the days written board menu we confirm the fayre on offer was medium priced and sounded good, we will certainly come back and try something again.

Really nice ambience here, staff really friendly, great selection of beers, lagers and wine, great deals on certain meals but a decent regular menu with Specials on ( not the band) we looked forward to eating here every night for our 3 day break, mind you we have been eating here for the past few years, its nice going into the bar after and having a drink and chat with no rowdiness, they can keep that for the other local bars.

The Griffin Inn is located in the centre of the town which is perfect, all local pubs and restaurants are within 5-10 minutes walk a real bonus as it rained the whole week we were there.

Went in for Sunday evening meal, were very helpful as we had a vegan and vegi with our party. Went out of there way to acommadate us.

We often overlook pubs when looking for places to dine but we're so pleased that we didn't this evening. 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £35. Bargain. The steaks were cooked to perfection. Lovely wine to accompany the steak. Dessert was lovely too. Staff were attentive but not in your face.Will definitely be eating here again.

We have the carvery here every year, this year was not so good as we have had in the past with some dishes being a little bit salty ie the gammon joint and the gravy

We made the effort to walk from one side of Newquay to the other as we'd heard that the carvery was good. The best in Newquay according to a local taxi driver. However, when we arrived the welcome from the manager was not so warm. We were given a dirty look walking in, told that food was finished (fair enough), huffed at when we changed the order from a pint to a half and puffed when the barrel needed changing. When a few more of our party arrived another 4 people they received the same treatment. He clearly didn't want to be there and definitely didn’t want us there. One of our party got locked in the toilet and when she told the manager that it may be an idea to put a sign on the door, so no one else gets stuck the response was "you mean you pushed open the door that was purposely shut, so no one uses it"! He was just rude really. May I highlight this was no reflection on the rest of the staff. We finished our drinks outside and left. Shame really as we were celebrating a 50th and were looking for somewhere to park ourselves for everyone to meet to drink for the rest of the afternoon.

We called in here on the off chance to get something to eat and were pleasantly surprised. The whole establishment was clean, had a wide choice on the menu, excellent food, great drinks and very reasonably priced. Staff were attentive and the place was very busy. Reviewing here in Newquay and called here at the Griffin Inn after seeing it from the Road Train. It is situated just outside the town centre with easy access. Easy access if your in a wheelchair.

I love this venue for it's great food and service! The Sunday roast is excellent, offering lamb, chicken and beef at the carving station. The bartenders are friendly and accomodating. We went several times during our stay in Cornwall.

No chips at last! Just a good old fashioned carvery with beatiful beef and pork, so very tender. Freshly cooked and very reasonably priced, will certainly return
