Since the beginning of my long weekend (retirement) I've visited lots of pubs on a fairly random basis. I visited the Griffin for a couple of hours on Wednesday. I can't remember the last time I've been in a pub with a saloon bar and a public bar. I was in the saloon bar, but would like to believe (though without confidence) that prices in the public bar were cheaper. Went in as the lunchtime food was finishing and it quickly went from being packed to being empty, though the public bar remained lively. Overall, service was good, beer was very good. First impression, a good pub.

A really cute little pub tucked away in a side road in Claygate, had I not gone there with someone I would never have known it existed. They had a band playing that night in the car park, sounds strange I know but it worked. The pub was really busy and all the seating at the front of the pub was taken but there was extra seating in the car park as the band where playing so we found somewhere to perch. Service at the bar was quick and the staff where very friendly. A little pub with a big atmosphere. They had a bbq outside and I had a halloumi burger which was bursting with flavour and really tasty. We didn't have any kids with us but I did notice there was a small play area for kids at the rear of the pub. All in all a good evening and if I was in the area I would visit again.

Went here for lunch. First thing that hit me as we walked in was the smell of bleach -a bit like a swimming pool . It's nice to know that the place is kept clean but a bit off putting when having a meal. My overwhelming impression was of a place that looks a bit tired and not very cosy and inviting. The carpet looked faded, the menus were slightly grubby and nobody greeted us as we came in the door. As a vegetarian I didn't feel very inspired by the menu as the only options I could see were sandwiches or baked potatoes. I opted for a baked potato which was very nice but it would have been good if there had been some options for vegans or veggies amongst the main meals. On the plus side the lady who served us was very friendly and it's nice to see a local pub still thriving a Claygate.

Great cellar, for maybe only a few real ales but never had a bad one. Food at reasonable rates, excellent quality. The building is very welcoming l, split between public and saloon with a real Victorian craved screen. Fabulous out door drinking in expensive comfortable seating and your bound to find a conversation from one of the clientele or at least a lick from one of the nicest pub dogs iv ever met (canine) haha. I was in the area with friends, so we re-visited the Griffin where we'd eaten before. On our last visit, we ate outside as it was a warm sunny day, but today the rain was bucketing down, so we ate inside. The food and drink were both very good and we were made to feel very welcome, but the place wasn't exactly packed out - perhaps because it's in the middle of a residential area and not on a main road. Nevertheless, it was very enjoyable and we will be returning when next in Claygate.
