Some of the worst food I've ever experienced. Rotten beef, undercooked gammon Smelly regenerated veg!

First time ordering a take away sunday lunch it was lush just enough meat defo do it again

1st time here for a meal and definitely won't be the last . Food was piping hot and bloody lush .

Great Sunday lunch in the form of a carvery. Two sizes; regular and large. A good selection of meat and veg. Cooked to a great standard. Help yourself to veg, gravy and Yorkshire pudding, after choosing your meat, or mince & dumplings. Great staff. Gets busy at peak times. Very highly recommended.

Some staff are not really friendly!! Need more knowledge about customer services.

Excellent venue . Food is fantast icy but the coffee is terrible! ☕️ Machine coffe topped up with a kettle of water . Tasteless watered down liquid . Please consider changing your coffee pods to XL or some other means as a pod topped up with kettle water for £3.25 ain’t reasonable. Thank you !

Always heard good things but had to try for myself warm welcome at the bar from staff clean tables the Sunday carvery was delicious had the turkey with all the trimmings and gravy to die for. Will return again. 5 stars..

Second time we have been. 5 Sunday lunches and 5 pints of soft drinks for 68 quid. Reasonable price. Nice food - some could do with being a little hotter. All in all good value. Will be back again for a 3rd visit.

Came for two Sunday dinners to take away wow 10 pounds now and one scoop of potato and dumplings were horrible no peas just horrible won't be back very disappointed one scoop of tattie dinners used to be nice ill cook my own from now one

Popped in for Sunday carvery today. The vegetarian nut roast and vegetarian gravy lovely. Plenty of choice of veggies and roast potatoes done in oil. My son had beef carvery. All was amazing. Service happy and quick. Lovely little pub. Think the bad reviews are to keep people discovering this little gem. Can’t see why anyone would have reason to complain. It is dog friendly which might put some people off. Excellent cleanliness, sevice, all round brilliant !

Absolutely love in here, we've come back time and time again couldn't fault anything and the staff are canny and always make you feel welcome would highly recommend.

Visited yesterday at 1.30 for carvery very disappointed wont be having again I thought carvery meant you got meat aswell they tried to cut it that thin we just got a slither of meat and my partners gammon I would have been embarrassed to serve someone that minute portion dont get me wrong rest of carvery was lovely and other meals here I've enjoyed but wont be paying for a carvery again

Carvery is just the best. Service 2nd to non. Sitting Area is really nice. Theyve made a drive thru in the carpark. Gets very busy on weekends so if you want to sit inside might be best to book a table

Sunday dinners are the best!! Meat is so tender just melts in your mouth and veg is freshly cooked.

Visited for Sunday lunch for the first time. Got a table and waited in a short queue for the food. Beef beautiful but the rest just scraping average and I can cook much better at home which defeats the point of going out. Zero atmosphere in the pub and a barmaid coughing her lungs up whilst the other had a hangover and was ill. Coupled with the place being freezing we wouldn't return

We visited for the first time on a friday afternoon....Plenty of parking places, easy to find...Extensive menu with plenty to choose from...reasonable prices...we both had the lasagne, salad and chips and it was beautiful, well presented and served hot....well worth a visit

4 of us for lunch with different choices..... food was served hot and fresh, maybe too many fries for my liking so could easily cut down on portion size and quite pricey in comparison to some other competitors but very enjoyable....

Monday lunchtime visit for a carvery. First impressions the carpark had more than it's fare share of litter, bottles cans and the usual paper bags and cigarettes ends, even the entrance steps were litter ridden. Should have turned round there and then. Must say that the carvery looked good , got to the table and then disappointment started, bland and tasteless bearly warm with a sticky not very clean table. All in all not a very good experience. Won't be back !

we visit this pub regular during weekdays , but mostly for sunday carvery. we find the food excellent quality with a good choice of meat, veg. with massive yorkies and tasty gravy.. drink prices are a bit high for a local pub. but we go for the food ! the pub has cheerful , helpful staff and can get very busy on a sunday, .never had a problem finding tables. i have been with my wife, and up to 8 of our family. highly recommended.

Went today as my daughter had heard really good things about the cavery. Food ok but nothing special - it wasn't hot only warm and roast potatoes were disappointing. My biggest shock was the price of the soft drinks. £7 for two large cokes is ridiculous. Have never paid that price anywhere in South Shields.

Me and my mam and son went yesterday around 3pm ish we had fish and chips with beans .. omg it was amazing!! Massive fish we got my son chips as he’s only 3 so I thought he could share my fish to . His bowl was full of chips for the price. We got double gins each and fruit juice and the food come to around 34 ish. Definitely be returning

Due to positive reviews thought I would try the food for myself. Sadly this is the worst meal I have ever had. Food tepid, presentation poor and turkey dry. Alyhough it was far from busy staff didnt make any effort to enquire if the food was up to standard. Will definately never come back.

Visited here recently for the first time, pub is spotlessly clean. Food off the carvery is lovely, choice of all the meats, food comes out so fresh. This place is a million times better than a Toby. Only downside is Pepsi was tasteless like what you would get in a social club. Would definitely recommend.

Our daughter and granddaughters had gone ahead to get a table for myself and partner as she’d been recently and knew it got busy with the possibility of queuing. The car park on our arrival only had 2 spaces left and inside it was extremely busy. So busy and familiar in table lay out that I found it hard to believe the tables were distanced apart enough. (Personal opinion only). This and the slightly canteen feel at time of visit, probably due to it being a peak time of business and the slightly panicked waitresses who didn’t seem to have some guidance, the fact if you wait for a carvery your in the way of the kitchen and toilets meant this wasn’t a relaxing meal at all. That and a sticky table and the need to ask for cutlery didn’t help yet. Did the food save the day, yes, albeit served on small plates there was plenty carvery wise and great choice of veg, lovely gravy and there was also a menu available which our daughter chose and finished off a beef wrap with chips. We asked for Diet Coke for two of the drinks and had to take them back, other drinks were chilled and refreshing. Go back? Yes but at a different time of day. Value using the eat out scheme couldn’t be faulted.

I visited this location on 2/7/2020. I enjoyed the pint but the charge for a 47.5g packet of crisps was £1.50, Extortionate prices to say the least, I was told it was a grab bag size that had influenced a 50% price increase from all other local competitors. You will need to think If you want a cheap or standard priced visit somewhere as The Grey Hen is heavily overpriced.

Lovely visit. I went in with a cake and the young ladIt’s were so helpful, helped me get some candles and a lighter. Hoda and a tall, slim young lady with short hair were extremely polite and well mannered when talking to me and helped me queue and get my food as this was my first visit. Very lovely food, meat was very well cooked and vegetables weren’t hard at all. Table was very clean and atmosphere was comfortable.

Drive up to the window, order your meal, pay £7.50 by card, drive away with a really tasty, generous portion sized Sunday lunch with all the trimmings! Couldn't be any better, will definitely be back for more.

The food was well cooked and adequate for the money. Staff were pleasant and efficient. The only thing letting it down was the furniture and the decor. Very bland without its own signature and very tired tables and chairs.

Four adults visited for a lunchtime. Three had the carvery and one had mince and dumplings. Between us we had beef, pork, Turkey and gammon. All were great apart from the gammon which was very fatty. You put on your own vegetables of which there was a large variety. You pay for either a large or small portion which determines the amount of meat you get but the vegetable selection is up to you and what you can fit on the plate. Overall no complaints from us.

Got a chicken burger meal which was really nice however, one staff member took it off my table not asking me if I was finished with half a plate full of food, so waste of money and also acting very unusual around my family, following us out the pub and things, very weird vibe. I wouldn't go back

First visit to this place so we didn't know what to expect. The food was OK - my son loved the burrito, my daughter said her pizza was 'fine' but I thought my burger was far too salty and more quantity over quality, as the portions were really big. The soft drinks were expensive,which made a meal out with children pricey. The two girls behind the bar looked bored and nobody came to check on us at any time so I wouldn't rate the service, but if my other favourite venue was full again I might give it a second try.

Honestly, couldn’t fault the place, it was busy for Sunday lunch nonetheless a table was made available for us.We had a full carvery, Beef and Turkey, all the veg, roast potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings, gravy was amazing!Great food and service, and for only 8.50 per person, you couldn’t cook it cheaper at home!Thank youPaul and MJ

Good choice of Carvery food for vegetarian and non-vegetarian which was topped up as we were in the queue. Good value for money you can tell it’s home cooked and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I mean it in a if you want a filling home cooked meal which is not placed with 3 pieces of veg on the plate and your still hungry after then definitely go here!

Don't go anywhere else for your carvery and that's all I really have to say! - kids plate size is ample!

A sudden change of plan left us hungry and keen to find a traditional carvery meal. We were not disappointed. The place was extremely busy but we were seated quickly. You pay at the bar before joining the queue for your meal. Lots of choice with 3 or 4 meats and loads of veg and beautiful Yorkshire puddings. The beef I chose was fantastic- a generous helping of well cooked meat. I had carrots, swede, green beans and peas. There was also sweetcorn, cabbage and sprouts. We will certainly be back.

Will highly recommend the carvery. Meat was cooked beautifully and there was plenty. Lots of vegetables to choose from and never seen Yorkshire puddings that sizes.

You get the best Sunday lunch here. Its always busy but you don't need to pre-book, though for a larger group it may be advisable. The food is all fresh, all well cooked and very tasty! Its not the cheapest but its true what they say, you get what you pay for!

Sat here now after 40 minutes and still no food! The place is half empty! I asked a waitress if our food is going to be much longer to be told that the machine that prints the orders isn't working so the kitchen didn't have our order! How much longer would we have been left to sit there if I hadn't asked! Never been here before and won't be back! What a joke!

My husband ,son and myself thought we'd try here due to hearing good reviews. We absolutely loved it! We went for the Sunday carvery and were well impressed with the service. It was very busy but now we know why. My son is a vegetarian and had the nut roast with choice of roast potatoes, mash, swede, sweetcorn, sprouts, cabbage, peas and green beans. The Yorkshire puddings were massive! They even served vegan free gravy for him. We could not fault this place at all and will definitely be returning. Well done Grey Hen.

Went here with my sister for a meal, good amount to choose from on menu and reasonably priced we decided to have the carvery and I have to say it is the best dinner I have ever had! My new favourite. you can have 2 meats and there is plenty of choice the kind of cheesy/garlic potatoes they do are something else it’s a must try! Nothing bad to say lovely staff lovely place

Rediscovered this now renovated and under new management pub. Decor has been brought up to date and contemporary and welcoming. A daily carvery is the best I have sampled for many years and offers smaller portion if you are more of a “grazer” like me. A large and varied alternative menu is also offered as well as a good range of beer,cider and spirits-all competitively priced. Staff are friendly and the place appears to well kept and thoroughly cleaned.

Now has an eatery, Carl's Carvery, which was formerly at South Shields Football Club. An excellent location, price, and the food is lovely, the Staff are ace too. The roasts and veg are all freshly cooked, no frozen boil in the bag rubbish. Well worth a visit probably ranks in the top two in my book for carveries anyway in South Tyneside.

Went out for a few beers early doors on days off. Her indoors has just had a half chicken kiev/ bolognese pizza with chips and salad for £7. Absolutely massive portions and tasted gorgeous. I had to finish off the last few bits as she was stuffed. Great value. Excellent range of beers and gins as well. Worth a visit, staff are class as well.

Myself and daughter went for lunch today the beef and pork just melted in our mouth this carvery is “Simply the Best”.The staff was fantastic so friendly and the atmosphere was lovely so homely they really looked after you,mash and turnip was spot on as every carvery we’ve been to they are lumpy but at the grey hen it was 100 out of 10 we won’t be strangers. Thank you all so much, as it was lovely as my daughter had had a bad morning at 6th form due to a girl not being nice and this meal and staff /chef is outstanding. Also my daughter had dessert it was amazing too definitely recommend the grey hen xx

We are big fans of a Carvery lunch and had heard good things about the Grey Hen so thought we’d give it a try. We found a table no problem despite it being very busy. My wife, myself and my daughter (8) opted for the mince and dumplings and my son (11) chose Gammon. The Dumplings were fluffy and lovely and crispy on the top. The mash and roasties were superb and the veg tasted fresh and flavoursome. Nothing on the plate disappointed and you get so much for your money. We have a new favourite destination for our Sunday Lunch and will be trying their midweek options soon

I was recommended The Grey Hen and I've got to say my husband and I were really pleased. This is by far the best carvery we've been to in a long while, and we will definitely be going back for more. I had the turkey and beef it was delicious. A happy customer.

We visited one Sunday lunch on a recommendation from friends. The place was buzzing with people. We all enjoyed the lunch, plenty of choice of veg and meat. We will be returning soon. We were too full to try one of the desserts, but hopefully will next time.

My wife and I decided we would like to eat somewhere different today so we give The Grey Hen a go. We were greeted by lovely and friendly staff and showed us to a table for two. We ordered fish and chips from the menu and a pot of tea each. When the meal arrived the fish was nearly as big as the plate with mushy peas and homemade chips. It was really nice but too much for us to eat we were so full and couldn't finish the plate off we will return in the near future.

Had the beef was like stewing steak and there was more coloured orange fat than stringy meat! All of the veg was cold, the mashed potato was like powdered packet smash ! The roast potatoes had eyes! Etc etc wasn't worth 17 pounds ! If you like school dinners this is the place to go !

Stopped off mid-week to try the locally-acclaimed brrakfasts on offer here. Not normally somewhere I would eat but the buzz was just too much to ignore. Decor was fine and clean. Breakfast was AMAZING. Top quality ingredients throughout - thick defent bacon, wuality butcher sourced sausages and black pudding veing the highlight of the full english. We enjoyed our food immensely and look forward to returning to sample Carls Carvery!

we had heard good things about the grey hen so we decided to give it a go.its not the biggest menu choice so we went for the carvery..it was ok but nothing flash.choice of meats and plenty veg and not a bad price..the place was pretty full so they must be doing something right but it was one of those places that just did not really appeal to us..its ok and if your passing give it a go.no doubt it will get better in time..best of luck to them

On Friday 17th August'18, myself & the hubby decided to try The Grey Hen Pub in South Shields for lunch.

I recommend getting the chicken curry with homemade chips but it is massive so I would share it with someone but the carverys nice too

I went to the Grey Hen a couple of weeks ago and was served a pint (almost £5!!!) by a young man who I know for a fact to be only 17 as I know the family. I can only assume with prices like that they are being greedy illegaly employing children to avoid paying REAL wages. Didn't stick around to try the food after that. Will take my business to somewhere less dodgy.

Lovely lunch good value for money. Great service. Only other comment is cutlery appeared clean but looked streaky. Otherwise keep up the good work.

I was told to try the Grey Hen carvery and I wasn’t disappointed ,I’ve been 4 times in two weeks,they do carvery Monday to Friday and a Sunday ,a sml is about £4.95 and a large is about £6.95.I think it goes up a pound on a Sunday.There is a choice of 4 meats and plenty of veg ,big Yorkshire’s and the gravy is fabulous.There is a normal menu as well with burgers,fish n chips,curry,salads,that sort of thing and they all look like big portions.My daughter tried a chicken burger, home made chips and salad she said it was nice .

Very good pub food. Carl's carvery is well known to visitors to Mariners Park in the last few years, and continues to be good value in its new home.

So pleased the Grey Hen opened up again, although not our local anymore definitely worth the extra journey. Had the carvery which was very nice, meats were so tasty and nice choice of veg. Will definitely be back!

Came here for a works party quite a nice place and good staff but the prices are ridiculous £3.80 for a pint and when they ran out of my beer a half pint bottle was mor expensive go to last orders it’s a fraction of the price IF YOU CHARGE LONDON PRICES MOVE YOUR BAR TO LONDON ! Won’t be back

Visiting the family in South Shields, whilst the girls went shopping in Newcastle popped across to The Grey Hen with two of my grandson's for Sunday lunch. This was basically a carvery, which was no better, or worse, than most places! Did think their idea of being able to order a large, medium or small meal was very useful, especially if the party includes child. As I said, nothing special but it was good value for what you paid!

Been in for food with my hubby, we both enjoyed our meal. Ive had fish and chips and my husband had the cajun chicken burger, both delicious. What makes this place great is the most friendly and welcoming staff. Will be returning soon!

I have visited this pub twice for food and haven't been disappointed. The new owners have turned this pub around and made it a much more welcoming experience. There is a standard menu plus a specials board and it is all cooked fresh to order. On my first visit I started with a very delicious Stilton and broccoli soup followed by salmon with flavoured new potatoes and veg. On my second visit I had homemade chicken and leek pie served with mashed potato and vegetables which was a good portion and piping hot with chunks of chicken breast in the pie. The owner told us he's now started a band and grill night on Saturdays so I think I'll have to try that. As many pubs are now using frozen deep fried food it was great to have tasty fresh produce to eat.
