We popped into the Greene Oak on our way back to Windsor. The food was excellent, as was the service, very polite and aimable. Starters; the roasted beetroot and the mackerel, main: fish and chips (big portions) and roast chicken which was succulent. I indulged in a vanilla cheesecake which was divine..it came in a double layered cup.For a Monday lunch time there were several people there. The garden looks lovely so I can't wait to try it out again in Summer, although I may go back earlier. Also I like the fact that the discretionary service charge was not included automatically .We did tip though. I have no hesitation in recommending this lovely pub.

Another fabulous lunch from your set menu. Scrummy scallops (added cost!) and smoky mackerel starters were tasty and as always, the right portion. Dayboat fish and mussels with your wonderful chips were flavoursome. Rice pudding and vegan cheesecake (yes vegan) were generous and comforting. I’m never disappointed by your food or friendly, efficient service

This was not my first. Isit to this great place. I stay up the road, and consider it my local when I am in Windsor. In the past, the staff has not been as warm and welcoming as they were on this visit, so that is a good improvement. The food here is generally rather innovative and quite good. This meal was no exception, but a couple of resl disappointments make me wonder if the place is really concerned with presenting lovely flavors and food . My starter was a pea soup with bacon, served with a Croque Madame. The Croque was perfect: toasty, yummy, and topped with what had to be a wuail’s egg, it was so small. Full marks. But the soup itself was underwhelming. Very bland. There may have been some chopped chives, but they had virtually no taste. I love the idea of using dried yellow peas, a staple from the rapidly receding winter, in a soup, but its delecate flavor needed SOMETHING—i suggest a drizzle of lemon juice and some spring onions.. or, one could use a hot pepper or chili drizzle. The bacon was chewy and limp. I felt a crisp texture would have been a better foil for the silkiness of the soup. To me, these are very basic issues which should not be served at a restaurant like this. I ordered a glass—yep, a glass— of a very expensive wine, because it was also very highly rated: Ken Forrester’s ‘Dirty Little Secret.’ This wine was worth every penny, and i even licked the inside of the glass, discreetly of course, to get every last drop. Full marks for even carrying this wine! The main was sautéed gnocchi with roasted broccolini, celeriac, girolle mushrooms, a vegetable purée and chopped hazelnuts. The gnocchi were good. The broccolini was spectacular…not dry or overdone, but just slightly caramelized and crisply moist. The celeriac was an eye opener…sweet and almost jammy, but with a neat celery edge. Just lovely. The rest of the dish was also fine…except, except ghe girolle mushrooms. They had been lightly cooked, fine, to preserve flavor. But they were chewy and almost oozy, with the texture that make people say, ‘uuuggghhh, mushrooms!’ A very light sauté, preserving the lovely, earthy spring flavor, woukd have removed enough moisture from the girolles so that they would not be damp or slimy, and a very quick cook would mean they would not get tough. These were heartbreaking to me, because they are such lovely little mushrooms, with such a beautiful taste…and i couldn’t even eat them! So i reccommend this place in general, but beware that some unevenness in the cooking and final presentations appears to be going on.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon, having booked for 16:30h. The starters were tasty and generous portions. We had pea & ham soup served with a small Croque Monsieur and Devilled Cod cheeks, both delicious. Then we had the Sunday roast, which they served with the meat, Yorkshire pudding & pigs in blankets on the plate and vegetables in separate dishes to share. The potatoes were roasted in duck fat and were exceptionally good. Gluten-free bread was available and the roast was served as just meat on the plate. Not sure if it would be ok for someone living with Coeliac disease (suggest speaking with them first) but ok for my intolerance. I liked that 1 scoop of ice cream (or sorbet) was available and I asked for it with clotted cream, which they were able to do. [As I’m writing I’ve remembered that I like a shot of Bailey’s poured over it, but I forgot to ask!] Service was good and unhurried. Overall a nice experience and would definitely return.

Very disappointing meal; we had had a wonderful morning with our young grandson who had a driving experience at Merc Benz World followed by a visit to drool over Ferrari's at Maranello's, Egham and to finish his treat with lunch at the Greene Oak. We have been there numerous times before over the past couple of years and always found their food to be acceptable to very good: not this time. Great start with some properly crispy ham croquettas but badly let down by the most tasteless, almost cold moules; a similar horrible experience was that the pig cheek & trotter pudding arrived with uncooked pastry draped around a stone cold filling: apart from breaching hygiene laws in terms of reheated internal meat temperatures, it was just plain nasty. Both were sent back. Our grandsons burger was ok, ditto fries and chips: we weren't charged for the items but left dissatisfied and hungry. Service was excellent - not the wait staff's fault that the food was substandard. Likely it will be a long time before we venture back there again.

Third time at the Greene Oak, first time on a weekday. We took the Winter Warmer deal and ordered from that menu. Frankly no need for a la carte, as this menu was pretty wide-ranging in choices. Our guest loved her soup starter with the mini Croque Madame, and smoked mackerel and artichoke was almost perfect. My wife’s stargazy pie with rabbit and langoustine, my cheek and trotter pudding, and our guest’s roast chicken were all scrumptious. Good helpings too. We’d had the whitebait and katsu rissoles for the table, so were full. So we had dessert. Gypsy tart and dark choc ice cream were very sweet but nice. Only slight criticism would be the pastry was a tad hard to cut through. Delightful talking to the staff, including nice chit chat about Galicia in northern Spain with Maria, whose family is from there. Definitely a “we’ll come again” experience.

While the roast dinner earned praise for its well-cooked sides (among the top 25% of pub roasts, I'd say), the starters fell flat. The chickpea croquettes, priced at £8.50 for three bite-sized pieces, felt overpriced and underwhelming. Similarly, the £4.50 bread basket offered a meagre four small slices. The atmosphere unfortunately suffered due to numerous children engrossed in loud iPads, creating a cacophony reminiscent of an Osaka pachinko hall. This detracted from the dining experience despite the commendable roast. A final curious note: the vegetarian nut roast curiously included pork/bacon pigs in blanket. While fortunate in this case, due to use not actually being vegetarian, I did find it strange that these were included in the only vegetarian roast option and makes you wonder what's going on in the kitchen. Overall, while the roast shines, the underwhelming starters, questionable value, and noisy atmosphere make a return visit unlikely.

The staff here were engaging, chatty, and had a great energy about them. There was a nice amount of time between being seated and being asked for our drinks order. The same applied to our food order, nothing was rushed and nothing took forever, it was just right which is something other places don't get right. The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful. We had the roast chicken which was done to perfection. My only critique (personal choice, mind) I would have preferred stuffing to pigs in blankets but that's just me. It doesn't take away from the deliciousness of the meal.

It doesn’t make for a relaxing experience. We only had main courses and coffee and still struggled to finish before being asked to move . I feel sorry for the team working here as it must be so stressful, constantly having to fret about diners who want a nice chat over dinner when they need the table back.
