The Green Man in Brentwood

Fine lunch for 5 people today at the Green Man in Herongate. The pork belly was particularly good. Generous portions compared to some places.The pub was full but the service was competent and helpful.

This is a regular visit for me with my Dad

I have been eating at this venue for some years, but never had an experience like this before. The manager came to our table to discuss an issue with one of the meals, he became confrontational, used abusive and insulting language to a member of our group and refused to serve a drink to a friend who arrived later, citing the fact she was joining our table and wanted us all gone. He began pawing through the uneaten food saying there was nothing wrong with it. As he became more agitated as we tried to converse with him, I asked him to step away, as I felt the situation was becoming very volatile, but he continued to rant until his bar supervisor encouraged him to return to the bar area where he sat watching us. Next, he let his guard dog into the public area (I’m not sure if this was a tactic to remove us, but we are all dog lovers). Finally as we left, the rest of the team came to the front of the venue and were laughing and pointing at us as we made our way out. The food overall was reasonable, but the management was unprofessional, immature and juvenile. This team needs to be replaced at your earliest convenience Shepherd Neame!

Can not believe what I experienced at this pub tonite, group of 6 of us, mix up on booking, which was fine, we sat ordered food, long wait, worse to come! One of our table had valid complaint regarding their food, Manager came to table accompanied by waitress rolling her eyes! Manager so foul mouthed and extremely abusive! If he had been in any other job would be fired on the spot. I am still in shock that any manager would spk to a customer as he did, I think a rethink in staff would be in order. Have been here before an all been fine. Maybe management has changed definitely for the worse. Worse experience I have ever come across in customer service!

The Green Man is a lovely pub with friendly staff, but unfortunately, some of the meals weren't as good as they should have been. Although they catered for vegans with a soya allergy, and the three sausages were tasty, for £16+ we would have thought that fresh vegetables would be served, rather than soggy, frozen green beans and broccoli. Also, we couldn't have a coffee after our meal because the coffee maker had ceased to work, and we weren't offered even a cup of instant coffee.

Sunday roast was lovely and all clearly home made. One of the best compared to a number of other places we've been to in the area The staff were great and very attentive.

Came early on a Sunday as a walk in table. Very nice servers and the food was faultless. Ate too fast for photos to be taken. Really great, will be back for another roast soon.

No meal ordered but I often pop in for the beer, my favourite, Spitfire and its good. Friendly staff, customers, friendly pub dog and my boxer dog is always welcome! It's got a large quiet beer garden as well.

Earlier today my Mum and I had the most fabulous roast dinner, fit for a king! Unfortunately Mum could not eat too much and was taken ill with a suspected heart attack. I just want to say thank you SO much to all the staff, especially the Manager who could not have been more supportive. Now at A & E but Mum seems fine! Thanks again.

Love this dog loving pub! They allow all dogs in the main pub area but not the restaurant part for those that don't want to be near dogs. Food is also very good, I recommend their pie and mash!

Annie & Shannon, and the bar man gave us a nice warm welcome. Beer was good, and we then ordered food. Generous portions, and nicely cooked (skate wing). No room for dessert, so will have to return!

I really like this place. Food is always good and staff and locals are nice. The beer garden is lovely on a hot summer day. Would highly recommend giving it a try if you haven't been before

Food is excellent and well cooked. Our latest visit we sat in the garden where there is no table service. Orders are taken at the bar.

All good for a first time experience from a recommendation. Can't fault the food especially the belly pork ..Sunday roast...just could do with a extra potato and some mash. Otherwise all good ty.

Everything was 5 star. The quality and quantity of the main course, especially. Sadly we were all too full to have desserts.

Not a great meal in honest. The chicken is not cooked properly. It wasn’t pink but was thoroughly slimy throughout. As if it had been boiled or something and then bung in the oven for a bit to brown it up. Wouldn’t come again. Barmaids were fine and polite so no complaints there

Lovely little pub staff are great

The food took a long time to come out... it was quite busy but as the rest of the table had finished their food 20min before our food came out, it just didn't feel right. Fish and chips and pizza to take so long? The garden was quite nice, plenty of seating. Waiting stuff very friendly.

Popped in for a lunch, atmosphere was a nice friendly country pub, good selection of beers, lunch consisting of patè starter followed by liver and mash, food was exceptional tasty and good portions, no long waits, friendly staff, the whole experience was enjoyable and reasonably priced, would recommend this pub time and time again. Stark contrast to the pub next door, they served terrible food

Everything is first class the staff the food the atmosphere I highly recommend this Pub. We had a pretty waitress called Annie she was fantastic.

Food slightly overpriced for what it is. BUT Always friendly staff, good atmosphere and a large selection of beers and ales.

Very pleased old style pub but not suited to young families

Feel free to go here if you would like to meet the rudest bar maid in Essex. Expect to be served with contempt and mardiness when they expect to pay you £20 for a burger! After a long walk with the family we decided to have dinner at the green man as it was such a nice evening so we ordered a drink and sat in the garden. When we went to order our food rather than hello we were welcomed with "table number?". I replied we are in the garden and the response was "no table number no order (or something to that effect). I sent my child running into the garden to get the table number. At that point the barmaid decided to serve others and I lost my place. My child came back saying there is no table number. The bar maid then asked "what table are you at? Is it the one by the pond?" I said yes. I was then told "well that's the only one without a table number" all I said was "oh right" and her snotty response was "well how am I meant to know you are on the only table without a number" I responded " well how am I ment to know I am at the only table without a table number either?". She looked at me and asked "well, what do you want?". I wanted nothing now. What a snotty moo. In fairness food looked great and all the other staff were lovely but unfortunately you have an entailed lead member of staff who is a total disgrace. If you are wondering what all the photos are then they are of other tables without a table number. You had better not sit on these as you will have the wrath of miss eyelashes to deal with. If you got to this point, well done. And if you want a happy ending we went to the Old Dog down the road and had a fantastic meal, that was much cheaper than the Green Man with super friendly staff. Please feel free to read my 5* review on that pub.

I was very disappointed with the meal I had (5.30pm on a Sunday). Had the roast dinner (lamb). There were 4 slices of lamb but it was way over cooked and really tough (lamb should be tender and succulent). There was also Yorkshire Pudding (burnt and overcooked), sage and onion stuffing, overcooked roast potatoes that were not nice at all, veg was small bits of cauliflower with some small carrots and beans. Came with side of mint sauce. This is probably one of the worst pub meals I have ever had. I don’t normally write reviews but felt in this case I had to. Would not visit again.

Great lunch with lovely liver and bacon main course and an excellent freshly made large pizza. Well kept crystal clear cask ale. Pleasant, relaxed service. With a pint and a glass of wine before, and a classy £25 bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon with the meal, the total bill was a reasonable £70. Highly recommended. We will return to this pub.

Around a year ago the food changed here. Once our whole family would visit here regularly. After 2 disappointing family sunday meals we sadly found an alternative local restaurant. Today just myself and wife were working late and was passing, so we called to see if there were any tables. There was availability and thats not actually surprising. The lovely staff and pub itself is simply lovely. But the chef has changed and not for the better. Tell the chef that Lamb should be moist and slightly red at least. Not crispy and dry. Asparagus should be lightly cooked not sloppy and stringy. The best part of the meal on the specials board was the mint sauce. I hope thats not taken wrongly as i left the entire meal after one mouth. I cant say i would go back, but please seriously consider if the chef is keeping or loosing your custom.

Fantastic pub! Not very expensive and delicious food! The staff lovely and we stayed for the Quiz night and great atmosphere.

Over priced food nothing special. I'd expect better service no check back or offer of dessert plates where not cleard until after we left... Plenty of staff on standing around chatting to each other

We go to a quiz every Tuesday which is great fun. We have eaten there too. The food is delicious. Lovely staff and an extremely welcoming atmosphere.

Visited The Green Man last night. What a Lovely Pub/Restaurant! The Staff are Lovely, Friendly and Efficient. There was a Lovely Atmosphere about the place. Cannot wait to go back again. Thoroughly recommended!

Our group of 3 adults &5 children had a relaxed and enjoyable midweek lunchtime meal. Pizzas, ploughman's, chicken breast in mushroom sauce and kids menus all cooked well. Service was friendly and good and made for a perfect social meet before walking around Thorndon Country Park.

nice people and relaxed dining - good bar for all occasions .. midweek dinner was fine, house burger was saved by the bun and the bacon, decent chips .. a better beef pattie needed for five stars though .. battered prawn & chilli starter was good but not great

Had Christmas dinner with the family and was fantastic - good service and food and great staff, always helpful. Just read the previous review and they said staff was not friendly. Must have been in wrong pub. Or just one of those family’s who love to moan about anything. Thanks again will be back .

Thursday 16th December 2022--Had lunch which was very passable, BUT we were lucky to actually get in the front door without one of us falling badly on the thick ice outside. We were very surprised the owner/management didn't have the savvy to apply some salt to the ice.

Stopped for a drink and a warm up and got both with a roaring open fire ! Lovely friendly atmosphere with good soulful background music . Could've and should've stayed longer

Stopped by (family of 3) without a booking. The blonde lady that served us was so lovely, cheerful and polite that I had to comment on here. The pie was stunning (and huge) and the atmosphere was cozy and warm. Will be back soon!!

If you get the food you ask for its lovely, very disappointed last night! Ordered jerk chicken from special board only to recieve after waitiing an hour chicken in cream sauce with mushrooms, I said this isnt what I ordered so waiter took it away, waiter came back five minutes later & said very sorry but jerk chicken is off the menu , long story short I ate the meal they bought out because by this time my party had nearly finished their dinner! We did get an apology a refund & offer of drink on the house so not all bad. But I did notice on way out that jerk chicken was still on specials boards??

Despite the great setting and good service the food was very poor and woefully overpriced - they need to up their game. I don't mind paying if you get value but with mean portions and bland food the menu needs improvement (it was 'greasy spoon' food level not gastro pub). Waitress did check-in but with half the food left and 'it's just okay' comments it was clear we were disappointed. Went to another pub within 5 miles after and see same meals offered £7 cheaper and more meal compliments.

Have eaten here a few times before and have enjoyed the experience. This time it was not a good experience at all. Admittedly my party of four turned up early and where surprised to be shown to our table early. Menu's arrived and the drinks order was taken efficiently. We ordered four main courses, fish and chips, steak and kidney pudding, pizza and salmon. The batter on the fish was soggy and undercooked, the fish was tasteless, the pastry on the steak and kidney pudding was like concrete and the vegetables with the salmon where almost raw. The pizza was great. When asked if everything was ok we replied that it wasn't. The waitress tutted, rolled her eyes and then cleared the table, we asked for the bill which was brought to the table and we were informed that the three unsatisfactory meals had been removed from the bill, for which we where grateful. Will I go back again? Probably. I will put this one bad experience down to a mistake. Sort it out Green Man your food and service used to be wonderful.

Nice little homely pub and our old family favourite. We were here to bring our family together (group of 10) since the passing of our granny and to spread her ashes as a family at the cemetery nearby. It is a real shame our visit did not meet our expected standard. The food was good for all but service little & none. The waiter & waitress we had did not look like they really cared or wanted to be there (maybe they didn’t?) From the moment we walked in there was no interaction past a simple ‘yep/fine’ when we ordered our food & drinks. Disappointed and probably won’t be back again in a group.

Very unfriendly staff, to the point of rude. I would give zero stars if I could. Stopped serving drinks 9.45 on Saturday night, even though website says 12am. Will be giving this pub a swerve from now on.

This place has the vibrant buzz of morgue and I've had more fun watching a snail hump a deformed pebble in my garden than I had engaging the gormless staff at this mansion of misery. If you are considering suicide , this would be the ideal place to come for your final drink for reassurance that life is not worth living anymore.

Won’t be going back here. Food and service was awful. Ordered the beef roast, it arrives warm, not hot, beef was tough as old boots. We were approached by a waitress asking if everything was ok with the food and I mentioned the beef was really tough, she said she would get me another bit but surely the whole joint would have been tough. Anyway, didn’t even get that far as I then cut in to a potato and it was cold, I just put up with it as I had already commented on the beef but the next potato was still hard, it hadn’t been cooked properly. I caught the same waitresses attention, told her my potatoes were not cooked properly and she just walked away. Another woman came over, presumably a manager, I explained how awful my roast was and it was taken away. I didn’t want another roast. Then for dessert, I ordered the crumble, after a disappointing roast, I was looking forward to this however my dissatisfaction continued. The crumble was cold like it had come straight out of the fridge and the crumble mix was like sawdust just sprinkled on top. Again, this was taken away. Very disappointing experience and I will not be returning. Food was awful.

Great pub really enjoyed the atmosphere

Food was very good and the atmosphere was lively. You're in for a treat if you like 80s music, haha. Location is easy to find, and the building itself is lovely. Menu had the standard gastropub stuff on it, with a couple of added extras, which were nice to see. Service was better than a lot of places I have been lately, but the only reason it didn't get 5 stars was a dodgy smell that hit us halfway through our meal. I literally have no idea what it was or where it came from, and it had gone after 10 minutes. Very odd. I would go back again.

I Come here a couple of times a month,never a issue however when you see signs on the bar advertising for a new chef and waitresses this should raise alarm bells! Absolute shocking food,food order was wrong and told it would take 20minutes to resolve-hence only one other group of ladies Albright still waiting for there food too! gave my daughter half of my dinner and the cod was undercooked and full of cooking oil. None of my table ate any of the poorly cooked food,we then complained to the confrontational manager who simply apologised and demanded we would pay for the drinks,I explained the whole day was ruined and we should not pay for drinks,he said there was nothing wrong with the drinks and as we left there was a waitress waiting at the bar waving the drinks bill. Disgusting customer service and I shall never return due to the attitude of the manger and staff.if my car wasn’t outside I would have simply walked out.

Could not fault the service. The young table staff were very good. However, despite the good portion sizes, I was disappointed with the quality of my Sunday roast. Not sure I would eat here again.

Not overvenhammered by the food, good selection and service but cooking needs improvement. Wife had tempura prawns and I had garlic mushrooms both of which were way to overcooked, liver and bacon which 3 of us had found, not enough Mash and the liver slightly undercooked, wife had the grilled salmon which was lovely but the accompanying Mediterranean veg was a very small portion and the courgettes were so hard they were uneddable. Will not be returning

My partner and I stumbbled into this pub yesterday evening, the environment looked great and we were starving as we had just finished work. The bartender who got the waitresses to provide us for a table for 2 was really friendly and provided great customer service. We were seating by a blonde lady who was super attentive and really nice aswell provide outstanding customer service aswell. My girlfriend ordered a beetroot burger and I ordered a chicken breast with mushroom sauce. The presentation was great but the food lacked seasoning. My partner said her beetroot burger was good but my chicken was not the best. The chicken not only tasted a bit plain, the sauce needed a little bit more flavour aswell. The chicken also had some but in the middle that were not really pleasant to eat hence I left it (normally those bits are removed). When asked how everuthing was I said fine as overall the experience was nice. In terms of the food id say 3 stars, however the customer service is 5 stars! Hence overall id give this place 4 stars!

Friendly staff, good food, shame about the parking or lack off.

Had a very poor experience here, the food was extremely disappointing. One meal burnt another so overcooked it was inedible. The waitresses never asked how everything was as if they didn't want to hear the answer. Not a local place we will be frequenting again

Food was nice, garden was lovely but the wasps ... Couldn't finish our food because of the swarms of wasps.. not the pubs fault though.

Was recommended by my in laws and was pleasantly surprised food was great good portions and very reasonably priced. It's a lovely pub with a nice bar and garden and the staff were polite and very helpful. Defo recommend if your out that way 👌
