Exceptional food and service. The staff were helpful and attentive. Beautifully presented food. I expect you need to book. The only downside is the pub is small.

My friend booked a table for 2 @ 6pm for my birthday. The service was good, the waitress was very friendly and the food was nice. I must say £24.50 for liver and bacon is extortionate! We did not have dessert, just coffee. This was served to us at 7.20pm and at 7.22pm the waitress came over and said we need to vacate the table by 7.30pm!!!! My friend was really upset that my birthday meal had been cut short - even though I disagree with a time limit for the table it should have been 2 hrs for 1-5 people dining. THANK YOU FOR RUINING A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!

The food is excellent , good portions and fine quality we thoroughly enjoyed everything . The staff are personable taking time to go through the menu and very friendly engaging everyone in conversation creating a very warm ambience .. Worth every penny we are looking forward to using this venue regularly over the summer months as they have comfortable seating outside .

We had a delicious lunch as a group of friends. We were served by 2 lovely members of staff who were attentive and very friendly. Previous table was running late and the waitress had reserved a table in the bar and served us drinks while we waited We were called as soon as the table was free and the attention to the customer continued for our meal. This is no longer cheap pub grub, more restaurant prices. But I thoroughly recommend for the food, ambience and service.

Had a lovely lunch here. The service was great - helpful and friendly. Two of us had the lunch meal offer, which was very good (crab/prawns/cod/liver). There were some vegan options as well, which were interesting, but not as popular as the other options.

Had an amazing date lunch here with my husband. Food was very good. I had an avocado salad to start and there were so many flavours in it I could have just ate a bowl of that! Mushroom Linguini for mains and equally tasty. Husband had mushrooms for starters and the steak for mains, best he had had in a while he said. Dessert was a chocolate melting brownie. Well actually it was my husband’s, but so glad I requested an extra spoon, so light but so chocolatey! Service was perfect, everyone so attentive and friendly. We will definitely be back very soon!

Took our 2 young grandchildren for an early dinner. The welcoming was fantastic and the children were made to feel special. The food was 1st class and fantastic value for money. The staff were just wonderful. All of them. Well done

Fantastic customer service . I presume it was the manager who served us , he was friendly and also educated to the menus and friendly . My chicken was amazing and my beef starter spicy and tingly x The knowledge of the menu was outstanding. Sadly we had a KAREN behind . Not the venues problem . She needed a volume switch .

Just passing through and we stopped for lunch. We both had a baguette, which came with salad. They were very nice and the staff were very welcoming. A good price too.

Disappointing, is there a new owner here? We used dine here on odd occasions and always enjoyed the experience. Last Thursday was sadly not great. Firstly, to walk in and be greeted by people in the bar f'ing & b'ing really loudly, surely as a family establishment management should put a stop to this. The waiting staff used to be enthusiastic and on the case, not this time, much confusion over the orders resulting in 3 meals going cold whilst we waited for the fourth. To me it would make sense for one server be allocated to a set number of tables. Food - ok but not as good as previous visits with what seemed less choices for more money. In fairness, we were offered free desserts and/coffee, but by then we just wanted out. As mentioned, I would be curious to know there is new management or ownership.

Menu has recently been updated and not for the better. Less choice than previous and got rid of some nice things I would normally opt for. My wife is vegetarian and was always disappointed with the two previous options being so limited, that are now even worse than before. A salad and a veggie burger! We live 2 mins away and used to go there regularly, but sadly will not be going again due to new menu options. Such a shame. So many people are vegetarian and vegan these days, you need to move with the times and offer them some nice options. Also need to bring back the fish and chips as was the best thing on the menu.

I was organising a family gathering for a dozen of us and had a few minor teething problems initially but once the Manager became involved it all went well. He was at front of house on the evening and is everything that a Maitre d’ should be.: welcoming , friendly and efficient. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and nice decor that goes with the age of the place. A restaurant is mainly judged by its food, of course, and the food was indeed superb and good value. All of us enjoyed it and I’d not hesitate to come here again.

Posting on behalf of Wife. Humiliated in front of other diners purely for coming in with a double pram. One female member of staff pointed at newborns babies saying they can’t accommodate that ‘thing’. It’s small enough to fit through a single door so doesn’t take up much more space than a single pram! Even offered to put pram away and place chairs at the table to create more space which received huffs from staff around the inconvenience of having two sleeping babies in their chairs! Made to feel unwelcome and anxious for the duration of lunch so left swiftly within an hour. Fortunately other diners were lovely but staff are in serious need of training on how to treat customers. Numerous new mothers struggle with anxiety going out with babies and that kind of treatment of an individual struggling could have a serious impact on their mental health. Disgusting behaviour.

Good choice on the menu for all 4 people, including 1 vegan. Plenty of room outside for pre-dinner drinks. Food was cooked and presented to a high standard, helped by excellent service.

If my review was for the staff it would have been 5 stars but the food was very underwhelming My husband had the prawn curry which he said was ok but, as a vegetarian, I only had two options. I went for the mushroom ravioli. It came up and I was very surprised at the small portion and total lack of any sauce - a nice creamy mushroom sauce may have saved the dish. The menu did say it was cooked on wine and cherry tomato or something similar but to me it was just dry pasta with rocket thrown over. For the price this is just not acceptable. I should have complained because I feel they must have forgotten the sauce but surely it would have been cooked in it???? Won’t return due to lack of choice on menu which is a shame because the location and staff were great.

Mediocre food which was also expensive. Had the pie and mash, not convinced the mash wasn't frozen mash. Served up and it looked so-so. Pie was average with not anything in it to excite. Was expecting much better as most main courses were around £20. Father had Thai curry which looked nice but he said it was just ok. Service pretty quick but didn't like the very high table/chairs

What a great experience. The service was absolutely amazing. The food was good home cooked style no frills dishes Large portions , well presented and perfect for a family lunch.

I am sad to write this review as we have been regulars at the venue for quite sometime. This week we booked for a table of 5 at 5.30pm and duly paid the £10 per head deposit. One of the regular party is my 91 year old Mother-in-law who sent us a message today at 1549hrs to say that she was not feeling well and had a temperature and was shivering, so would not be able to come. The rest of the regular party arrived and enjoyed our meal. We then asked for the bill which showed a deposit of £40 which we queried knowing we had paid £50. The waitress went away to find out what had happened and then came back as said because we had not given more than 48hrs notice they had to charge the £10 for the non-attendance. I explained what had happened and even had the text msg from my Mother-in-law to show them. The waitress did go and speak with the manager but he did not bother coming down to speak with us. You could tell she felt awkward but stated that it was in their terms and conditions and would take the £10. I wrongly assumed that a little bit of compassion would have been shown in the circumstances to regular diners and they would waiver the £10 deposit. Alas, that was not the case so the upshot of the lack of compassion is that they have gained £10 tonight but that is short-term and my party will never go back to this venue again, so in the long term lost revenue of more than the £10 gained today. What an excellent business model to have (not)!

The staff were fantastic that is why I’m only giving this a one star, couldnt fault them. The vegetarian options however are diabolical, you would expect 10 years ago to have two vegetarian options on a menu but times have changed and restaurants have improved for more diverse options for people. The portions was really small for the price you pay. I was extremely disappointed when I asked if there was anything else vegetarian I could choose from the response I got from the lovely waitress was ‘I’ve been telling them to add more veggie stuff as lots of people have asked.’ PLEASE listen to your customers and open up to more vegetarian options . Won’t be returning unless they need a vegetarian food taster! Go to the George and Dragon instead veggie people! The food is fantastic, larger portions and more to choose from!

The food that we ordered was good and well presented. However, there were a number of negatives around our visit :- the table was sticky - clearly hadn't been cleaned before we were seated.- no hand sanitisers visible.- service disappeared after serving our main course.- nobody came to collect our dessert orders- we had to seek out a waitress to order another drink.- we had to seek out somebody to get the bill.I should note that the restaurant wasn't that busy - so that is not an allowable excuse.Will e be going back ? - NO, there are too many other eating places to visit. The quality of the food is not enough on its own to attract people back.

This was our first experience of eating out post lockdown, and happened to be driving through Essex on our way home... we received a warm welcome from Ben who was the evening manager that day, but whilst very busy and ensuring that everybody adhered to COVID19 guidelines this did not deter his excellent customer service skills and ensuring everyone felt individually treated on the day... enjoyed the best glass of SB and deliciously served food which all contributed to my feedback at this time, and hosted by the lovely Lucy whose nothing is too much trouble approach supported what was one of the most enjoyable experiences at this difficult time... the environment with tables well laid out and arrangements for individual dining also exceeded my expectations plus everyone was warm and friendly on the day... only wish we had another excuse to be in the area... but will definitely be on our list for another visit - be your own judge, but if you read this and Ben is in charge when you visit do let him know we said "hello"!!

Online booking service was excellent and received both a confirmation email and a reminder the day before.Upon arrival we were shown to our table. Adjacent to the bar which we didn't find ideal with a small child given the quantity of staff passing by to drop off glasses. We also felt overlooked by the bar staff and also felt part of their conversation some of which wasn't particularly child friendly. The service felt very slow and awkward and had to ask on two separate occasions for some service the first one was to order our food 35 minutes after arrival. The food however was flawless very delicious we had 3 starters and 3 mains and a desert for our child. They even accommodated a request for chips as a side and also garlic bread for our childs starter. Although £4 for two scoops of childs ice cream felt a little steep. Overall an okay experience had much worse but also much better. Covid measures seemed fairly straightforward but weren't explained upon arrival but have become part of the norm of dining out in 2020.

So me and my two friends sat outside as we should have during this pandemic. After waiting 15 minutes and manager sitting by the window I went to doorway and manager appeared and was told they were closed. Also didn’t like how he spoke to me

Great to have The Rose back open. Went for lunch today and sat in the new outside eating area, which despite the rain was completed covered & felt like we were lunching on holiday - the lights for the evening are a really nice touch. Lunch was great, service was speedy and staff very polite as always. All precautions put in place made us all feel very comfortable. Great to have you back open.

Me and my friend visit for boozy brunch, we had a lovely meal but the icing on the cake... let me tell you, we sat on a table outside (bare in mind it’s 4th July aka first date the pubs opened) Tom our barman was OUTSTANDING. he deserves a pay rise. 10/10 xxxxx

Had a lovely lunch here today for our Mum’s birthday. All five of us really enjoyed our meals. Staff really friendly and great atmosphere.

Went without a booking and got a table for 1 hour,food selection not great but ok,my wife had Risotto which she said was really nice.The really offputting thing was the fact the only waitress had a really bad cough and kept coughing into her hand .......but continued sering plates of food and drink without washing her hands.We shall not return.

We visited The Rose for our Valentine’s Day evening meal and had a lovely evening with food mostly from the evening’s specials menu. A great cosy country pub atmosphere when arriving for pre-meal drinks followed by some lovely food which tasted just as good as it looked. Would recommend the restaurant as we’ve never had a bad meal there and will definitely be returning again soon.

My wife and I stopped here on the off chance one Saturday for a light pub lunch. Whilst in the bar side there wasn't too many tables, we grabbed lunch and wasn't disappointed. Nice staff, food was good pub lunch, not greasy or anything like that and the apple crumble was yum!! Good value and well worth going to. only reason I have not given 5 stars because if we didn't arrive when we did, doubt we could of sat anywhere.

We squeezed into a packed Rose, so pleased we booked! Restaurant was full we sat in Pub side. Lovely atmosphere. Shared some delicious Olives & Breads to start, I had Bangers & Mash - real comfort food, very delicious. Risotto was very much enjoyed by my other half. For me Lemon Posset and for himself, Rocky Road cheesecake, a new addition apparently. It was a great meal in a buzzy, busy pub. Service was great & bill was very reasonable. Had been recommended to us & I will recommend on!

Just been to The Rose with my wife and children and had the best time. Service was spot on and really friendly. Quality food cooked brilliantly. My sirloin steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, with a well seasoned charred finish and all the sides from the great crunchy chips to the creamed spinach and sauce Diane were delicious. We ate as a family of 6 and everyone enjoyed everything. The calamari strips were perfectly cooked and the burgers we had were all cooked to our liking as requested. The fat chips were lovely. The service was brilliant. Our server was so helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our night mire because of this. Well done for everything. I will come back here soon. This was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised, the food was cooked well and presentation was excellent my Husband had the Pie and he said it was definitely homemade our friend had the Fish and Chips and they said it was gorgeous.The service was excellent and the ladies were really lovely and very attentive too.We will be going back.

Sunday lunch on a stopwatch is a strange concept ! Drink in the bar , I said ? .... but the stopwatch had started ... tick tick ... table ready ... steady ...Go! The publican barked he needed the table back by 4pm. We sat by the bar and were asked did we want a drink and in the same breath asked did we know what we wanted ? ... tick tick .. the Rose stopwatch was ticking . We asked for 5 minutes and within 3 minutes another waiter asked did we know what we wanted ... tick tick ..our starters arrived and were adequate however the Prawn cocktail bread was the size of a ... err stopwatch ... tick tick .... our plates were taken and our mains were served in the wind of a stopwatch... tick tick ... Shame the food wasn’t on a hot plate though , perhaps they didn’t have time . While we were eating our warm Sunday lunch 3 different waiters asked if we needed more drinks ... tick tick ...within 3 minutes of finishing our mains , all of which were lovely ... a waiter appeared with the dessert menus ... tick tick ... did we have time ... The next competitors menus and cutlery were placed on the bar next to the table ...tick tick ... we didn’t seem to have time for an ice cream so just ordered coffee ... tick tick ... The bill was placed on the table along with an extra £1 for some more gravy ,as I took my first sip .. tick tick ... Then with the speed of an anxious publican , the waiter appeared with the CC machine ...the clock stopped at 3.59pm ... phew we made it ... now I know what the mints were for ... indigestion from eating so fast

Popped in on the off chance last Saturday lunchtime and was pleased that a table for two was available. The service was prompt and courteous and the food (as always) tasty and delicious. The restaurant has a cosy feel and a positive vibe. We've dined here many times and both look forward to returning again in the not too distant future.

Called in as passing by. Restaurant fully booked but tables available in bar. Fantastic choise of food, hard pressed to decide, i had sausage and mash and partner had the veggie curry, both were fantastic. Finished off with the passion fruit cheesecake...mmmm!!!. Staff were very attentive, asking several times if everything was ok. Will certainly be coming back for more at next visit to Brentwood. 10/10.

Visited on Sunday and had a fantastic meal, everything was spot on. I had the roast and my girlfriend had the pie of the day; both were excellent. The service was great also and deserves a mention, would definitely recommend and look forward to returning. Also the bread and butter pudding is a must have

Have been to The Rose several times, and enjoyed some good meals. But the recent meal was very unsatisfactory, undercooked and not very well presented. Staff was very friendly, nice atmosphere.

We come here quite often and it is always a pleasure. Sometimes gets a bit noisy and also quite warm, but the food is excellent, service is excellent and prices are very reasonable. Wayne is the star of the show but all the staff are very good.

Visited without a booking, although they were very busy the young man we met found us a table and looked after us very well, special thank you to him. We had roast dinner which was excellent.

Nice relaxed atmosphere, always enjoyable venue to meet friends for lunch. Never disappointed and one of our favourite lunch venues.

Visiting a family member we decided to have a lunch at a the local gastro pub. Pleasant welcome and we were seated promptly. Set menu on this particular day 5 or so starters, similar main course and desserts too. We ordered our main courses mostly a roasts and a battered fish, sadly the meats were dry and lacking in any type of seasoning along with the potatoes and veg. Fish batter was pale and soggy. Shame.

We met here yesterday on a perfect summers day, eight friends. First we sat outside and had drinks which was perfect. We were not rushed in any way. The menu was great and varied and they also had specials. I had the baked fig and hits cheese starter that was delicious. One of the specials was a soft shell tempura card that one if our friends had and they said it was excellent. I had a smoked salmon and avocado salad which so delicious. Everyone agreed the food was first class. The staff were lovely too.! We finished off back outside for more drinks. Just perfect in every way

We came here for my husband's birthday meal with our children. The staff were polite and friendly and good with the children, the children's menu was really good with a good variety and our children really enjoyed their meals.

On our way to a wedding, our driver called ahead and made lunch reservations for our group of 8. We arrived and they had a table arranged inside and outside for our choosing. The food was delicious. I had the fish and chips and my group also enjoyed their salads and pie. We were in a bit of a rush and the food came quickly, the water was always refreshed and the service was perfectly friendly. The Rose made our quick stop for lunch very enjoyable and our busy day a bit more relaxing!

Thank you for a great evening despite my mess up on online reservation .We had lovely fig goats cheese pear salad .to start ..Skate wings with fresh vegetables all cooked perfectly with an exceptional New Zealand Sauvignon. took our coffee in the garden marvelous

I normally eat here and enjoy the food but this time it's not the same, the staff wasn't helpful at all I don't think they had enough experience just confused with the food and drinks Maybe weekends is not the best time to eat here..

We fancied a change for a decent lunch, we were recommended The Rose, so we booked in. With high expectations, we were not disappointed. A true test with our teenage entourage in tow. They loved it, service was great, interested and informed.

The service was okay but the food was tasteless. It didn't feel like I got the value back for my money.

Went inside for lunch as it was too hot outdoors and were seated in restuarant. one of our party requested a bacon sandwich that she had seen others having but was told that is from bar menu and we were in restuarant. No indication that there were differing menus or locations. Apart from that, lunch was excellent, good quality fresh food, well presented, etc. Draught beers available, wines by the glass, service good and enjoyed lunch in clean and tidy but not too large a place where space was restricted. Most guests had booked and my smoked salmon & avocado salad was perfect for a hot day after a long walk.

Great food and nice pub but overpriced. The Hot platter for 2 is a better buy as it comes with chips. Chicken salad was good. Don’t forget to check out the specials board. Pub is a little small. Staff quite pleasant.

Arrived for my sister’s birthday. Food was okay (a bit dry) and the service was non existent. The waitress at the other side of the bar was lovely getting us a drink and directing us to the tables. The waitresses was messing about talking and drinking behind the bar insight of everyone. 3/4 length lace leggings and a white vest top is not appropriate for a highly rated establishment such as the rose. The waitress looked miserable the one with the curly hair and the one with blue/blonde hair didn’t smile at all. We asked for the dessert menu and obviously the waitress forgot but much to our amusement she walked into the wall white smiling at customers. We then viewed the dessert menu and waited another 5 minutes (baring in mind there was 4 tables in the restaurant at this point and 5 waitresses). We asked for the bill and waited another 5 minutes and proceeded to go to the bar ourselves and pay. Will not be returning. Very disappointed.

We had been away for the weekend myself partner .son daughter + partners and 2 grandaughters aged 3n6 .Peppa Pig world and 2 nights in "The Chine hotel Bournemouth " great place to stay especially for families ..We travelled back earlier than planned Bank holiday Monday .to avoid traffic decid3d to have a final meal together ..my Daughter found The Rose on line .made a booking for 8 not so easy .But we sat in the atmospheric bar full of fun n laughter customers .We were shown to our table which was lovely the menu is great with specials board as well .Our food was far far above average the staff were both professional and fun .foodwise.everything that we had was exceptional so much better than the chain establishments.. support The Rose independant places need our support I wish them my best wishes be back soon .Clive et famille

Having had drinks in this small local in the past I must admit that I was not too keen when my wife suggested we ate there as a family. His wrong was I? Yes it’s small but better lit than the bar area so it felt more spacious. However what made the evening was the good food, reasonably priced, and served by attentive, friendly staff. We’ll be going back and I’ll never judge a book again by its cover!

Very busy for a Monday lunchtime seems very popular. Just had bar food which was very nice. Service and food very good. Would recommend.

Went here for the Wife's Birthday recently ,had not been here before and was lucky enough to be fitted in as it was very busy and we had not booked. The food was extremely good the staff were very welcoming .Sue one of the waitresses arranged for a candle to be fitted to my wife's sweet and accompanied by some of her colleagues gathered around our table and sang a chorus of Happy Birthday to her....such a nice touch with a few people around us joining in .All in all a nice place to visit very friendly but very busy so would advise you to book in advance....I had to start the king prawn starter followed by crab and prawn linguini and apple crumble which came with both custard and a side of ice cream,my wife had to start a vegetarian wrap followed by stone Bass followed by cheesecake of the day . Popped off the A12 as wanted to get something to eat and inadvertently missed the services but continued on towards Brentford and within a few minutes came across “The Rose”. We were made very very welcome even though we had not booked and ordered the special “Chicken Pie” and a Vegetarian “Ravioli”. Also had the Caramelised Fig, Orange & Goats Cheese Starter but as a side dish with a glass of wine and a lemonade for the driver. The food arrived quite quickly and was absolutely superb. No small portions so no one went hungry. There was no room left for desert so I will have to come again for desert and coffee. I can not recommend this highly enough. Make sure you book-in advance to avoid disappointment. Staff extremely efficient and friendly. Worth a visit.

1st time visit with friends, for Saturday evening dinner. Great little pub with excellent service and food. Fairly varied menu and can recommend the Steak pie and the Stone baked bass.

I visited this pub in the early evening when it was reasonably quiet, but by 8 o'clock it was absolutely full with laughter and chatter. We had been asked to arrive on time as Saturdays were always busy and we would have to lea e our table after two hours. We waited some considerable time before our order for drinks and food was taken, but it wasertainly worthwaiting for. The portions are very generous, the staff friendly and helpful.

We visited the rose on a Saturday night with friends for an evening meal. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was nice and the atmosphere good.

Visited today, absolutely astounded by the treatment we received. Arrived at ten to twelve to an empty establishment. Asked for a table for three but were told they only had space at the bar stools. First table booking was for 1 pm but we couldn’t sit down albeit we confirmed that we would be out easily in an hour... the very rude manager said that all she could offer would be sandwiches... I left before I said something I met regret, but seriously the way this lady spoke to us was disgusting. Looking at us like we had just come in with the rubbish. Don’t bother the food is not that great in any case. Needless to say we won’t be back.

Booked for dinner for 4 adults and 2 kids. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was simple but very tasty. Would definitely book again.

Recently came for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. Roast dinners are amazing, good size portions and a good variety to choose from on the menu. Staff are lovely and super helpful... will no doubt become our new local when we move just down the road.

Service is next to none at this pub, and it is like a meeting point for Shenfield locals. Immediately greeted with a smile and service was fast, however this did not compromise the quality of the food.

This place is cosy, relaxed with great food and great service. The Sunday roast is superb and the menu has a great range. Staff are also very polite so I would recommend

Very poor bar service, staff do not listen to what has been ordered, serve up beer that has gone off and advise they only have house red wine when they have a whole wine list.

Several visits in and the rose still delivers, the menu for Sunday lunch i hasn’t changed, but why change if it works. Cooking and presentation is good, and VFM

Really nice breakfast all freshly cooked so it takes a bit longer bit you get a massive pot of tea to keep you going. Book on a saturday no breakfast on a sunday.

On Saturday 3rd November we visited this pub for dinner, lovely atmosphere as we walked in was shown to our table and asked if we would like drinks, the owner wad very friendly and came over with the menus , very nice selection of food, I had the avocado &prawn; tower which was lovely my husband had the calimari also excellent, i had skate for my main beautifully cooked with fresh veg, my friend had ravioli also very good as were all the meals, in fact everything was well cooked fresh and tasty, staff very friendly, it was our first vist although our friends have been before, we would definitely return, the pub was very busy but you were not rushed along it was a very pleasant evening well worth a visit.
