Boars Head in Brentwood

Unfortunately our second visit was not as enjoyable, although the pub was busy we had to wait 15 minutes and ask for somebody to take our drinks order, starters and mains were excellent again but plates not cleared at the end and even though desert menu was asked for, nothing produced after 10 minutes when we the decided to pay the bill and leave, unsure if we would return solely down to the service sadly

So much food and really tasty our manager/server Rob was really good entertaining and efficient

On Sunday 6th April, we visited the Boars Head as we often do as a family to celebrate a birthday! The staff are very warm and welcoming and helpful especially Meg, Ollie and Amy. The food is always good quality with great choice and the atmosphere is always nice!

Food was great and the service from Amy was exceptional. Lovely for a Sunday roast with the family. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely Essex pub, I come here a few times a year with family to celebrate special occasions. The food is always top notch, as well as the team that serves us. Big thanks to Amy, who served us this Easter Sunday, very polite and professional. A real credit to you. I look forward to returning soon.

Went there today it was a bit out of the way but is on my list of village pubs I'm yet to try . I'd recommend booking as there are few tables inside, there is another part with people standing around the bar and I think this side is also dog friendly, which I didn't want. It wasn't empty . There were plenty of people and there is plenty of seating outside. It's got a nice local pub villagers feel to it. I got a selection of starters. A sharing cheeseboard, squid and a pork and cider terrine. We did assume that there would be more cheese than a camembert but our mistake was that I didn't read it properly. The red onion chutney was nice but there was no piccalilli. The squid was ok but would have been nice hot , it was cold. The hunters chicken was nice in fact she said it was amazing but a little dry. The chips were nice. He had the mixed grill , it was disappointing he said it was cold , the steak wasn't cooked as required and just wasn't enthusiastic about it. It was packed by the time we'd finished , people were being turned away at one point. Personally I wouldn't go back , we've done it and wouldn't return . I'd imagine it would be packed outside too in the summer. It seems popular with the locals. The staff, a young lady and a middle aged man were friendly enough and it was clean as was the toilets. There was enough parking for a spring Wednesday afternoon lunch.

I cannot fault the Boars Head. I had not visited in years…..and so I was wonderfully surprised to see how well maintained and true to high standard I had remembered. Ollie and Kirstie were working and greeted me naturally (no mass chain pub rehearsed lines, or forced welcome) Genuinely warm reception and service. It’s rare these days to achieve that connection, respectfully given, with genuine warmth. The food was brilliant. (Mushroom and ale pie, with vegetables). A fantastic classic menu in the most beautiful of settings. This pub and food venue is a triumph. Most importantly - the welcome, continued warm service and conversation were exemplary. Thankyou Ollie and Kate. You and the pub made my day.

The food and location are lovely. The staff were very friendly. It got a bit busy, so it took a while to order. But the gluten-free options weren't clear or marked on the menu. When you order the server will help make your meal allergen free. Maybe this could be signposted on the menu.

Have just had Sunday lunch x4. Excellent meal, value and atmosphere. We were served by Amie and for the second time in a month she served us again.She was smartly dressed, very tolerant and welcoming and a pleasure to be served by her again. Thank you. We will be back for more!.

All good, staff really friendly. Food was nice, Lamb shank cottage pie awesome, mushy peas with the cod were runny but overall very happy.

Stopped over twice here for a drink over the past few months with the potential for ordering food with what looks like a decent menu. Both times, we were almost ignored and struggled to get the bartender's attention when not even busy. When we managed to attain service, it was extremely cold (no hello/hi/cannot be bothered). Very unwelcoming establishment. Only 2 stars and not 1, as the pints were fresh and cold. Will not be returning or recommending.

Lovely traditional pub with updated pub food. Big Car park around the side, hard to see while driving up to the pub o this busy road but it is there.

Went here for a nice pub lunch .nice atmosphere cosy decor but unfortunately both mine and my wife's food was cold when it got to us and we both had some elements we ordered missing .staff did rectify but considering the plates and sauce pots were badly chipped I feel they need to raise the bat a little before I would return .

Have gone here regularly since we moved to the area three years ago but last two visits have been disappointing. Didn’t comment on first time as thought anyone can have a bad day but latest visit for Sunday lunch was very poor. Started with soup which at best was lukewarm( same as previous visit ) then had the roast which again was barely warm, even the gravy did not warm it up. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and rubbery, the stuffing ball was also very dry, the Cauliflower Cheese did not really have any cheese on it, the chipolatas turned up halfway through the meal after having to ask again for them and were dry and burnt. The whole meal did not have a lot of flavour and was definitely under seasoned. There is no excuse for cold food and this set a bad tone right from the beginning of the meal. I did not complain at the time as we had guests with us who we had invited to lunch and was embarrassed that I had taken them to somewhere so poor. It is a shame to see such poor service from an establishment that up to the end of last year had provided such excellent service. I don’t know the reason for such a big turnaround.

I've visited the Boars Head in Brentwood a number of times and the food and service never fails to impress. I last visited for the Burns Night supper as I did last year, again it was a lovely experience and the food and the atmosphere top notch. Thankyou

Amazing service from Ollie very accommodating and polite with a lot of knowledge of the history of the place a family member is an allergy sufferer and was given an iPad to check off his allergies and it provides a menu type set out with all the foods with allergens selected taken off which really put our minds at ease Food was stunning as always

We were greeted by Rob the assistant manager after a walk using the All Trails app. We took advantage of the app breakfast offer and enjoyed 2 full English. Food was great and Rob was a friendly, welcoming and chatty host. Will definitely revisit as plenty of walks in the local area using the All Trails app. Thanks Rob!

Took advantage of the AllTrails offer to go for a walk somewhere new and enjoy a free breakfast. We were warmly greated by Rob who wasn't fazed by our somewhat dishevelled appearance and muddy dog! The breakfast was great and they even provided a sausage for the pooch! We'll definitely be back to enjoy more of the Boars Head's great hospitality and food - and explore more walks through Thorndon Country Park.

Although booked in advance and was emailed by the pub on the day, not a good experience meeting family for a special lunch we were dumped in the bar area rather than the restaurant, waited 15min for a drink order then another 15min to order food which arrived after we had to ask some half an hour later, very very poor service even had to chase for the bill and waited again just to pay, I expected better and was very disappointed with the service and attention that was non existent, we were treated like an inconvenience, I would appreciate a response from the owner After some time I have had a positive response from the manager who called me to discuss and review my complaint A good talk about staffing changes and new staff settling in to their roles ,I agreed that previously we had a good meal at the pub and will try again next year once all has settled down Thanks to the manager for taking time to contact and discuss personally. So bad that I have to change my perception of the service as I had a long conversation with the manager and resolved the issue together with a personal promise to send me gift vouchers for use at any facility obviously just a lame promise as nothing sent by the manager as expected nothing surprises me really,I would not spend any time or money at this pub

Maybe the chef was off sick but if you like charcoal, this was definitely the place to be! Despite the manager reaching out to discuss this terrible experience, they have ignored two emails to the address they provided. There are plenty of far better options to frequent in the area. A thoroughly disappointing experience all round!

First time visiting for a Birthday Meal for my dad, so glad it was a good place! Food was delicious, atmosphere was lovely, especially as we were right next to the lit fire place. Food was a little bit slow coming out/slow with plates being taken away, but the staff were all very nice and friendly. Would happily visit again!

Food and service was excellent, we were not rushed so had plenty of time for a couple of drinks as well although it was busy at lunchtime

We had a exceptionally lovely evening, with a large group of friends.Haighleigh was most welcoming and very helpfull. She made our evening very joy full. We can not thank her enough for her attentive service, warm personality.

This is our third visit to the Boars Head. The last two times were excellent but sadly this time it failed to deliver. Three of us had the turkey from the Festive menu and one had the beef cheek. The carrots were squidgy and the parsnips and brussels were hard. My husband and I had Christmas pudding which was lukewarm. The waiter willingly warmed it up which did improve the flavour. It was a very small portion which was fine for us. The staff were very attentive and helpful as always. The restaurant was quite chilly although the ambiance was very agreeable.

Excellent pre Christmas catch up with friends. We were well looked after by Hayley & her team, especially Ollie who served us.

A quaint, charming, cosy pub. We went for a Sunday lunch whilst visiting family. The food is great and the waiting staff are lovely. It’s the perfect place for a cosy Sunday roast dinner by the fire.

Haven't been to this pub for many years but gave it a try today with close family. Nice atmosphere, no intrusive music, and good friendly service in spite of it being busy. Everyone was pleased with their meals, and portion sizes were generous. I had the Vegetable Grill, which I thought might be a gamble, but my fears were unfounded. A great selection of perfectly seasoned and cooked ingredients. Delicious. Desserts were a decent size as well. Definitely recommended. My only (minor) criticism is that the car park is small, but I doubt anything can be done about that.

Great little pub.we arrived a bit early for our table and the young gentleman behind the bar went to check if it was ready . He was extremely polite. No cold bottles of diet coke but he offered to put some in the fridge for me.a lady took our food order and she was very efficient and friendly. Food was large portions and very tasty. Squid was lovely followed by beef cheeks that were excellent. Definitely recommend

Lovely Sunday lunch in a great country pub

I ordered Sea Bass, which was overcooked and poorly presented. Also, there was only one member of staff on duty. She did the best she could, but service was far too slow. We decided not to bother with desserts.

This is a lovely, warm, cosy, welcoming, and friendly Country pub/restaurant and outside beer garden in Herongate, Essex. Today, my friends and I booked for lunch. Haighleigh our Waitress welcomed us on our arrival and was very helpful, friendly and attentive at all times. The food was delicious, good price and good selection of food. I have been here often and always recommend to friends and family.

Food was amazing. The salmon wellington was beautifully cooked. Service from Haighleigh was spot on. Head chef Shaun's specials all sounded delicious. Will definitely come back again!

Our first visit, for a Sunday lunch with friends. We had a fabulous time. It was very busy, but we received such good service from start to finish. Our roast was fabulous with amazing Yorkshire puddings and extra gravy. The slow cooked rib of beef was amazing!

We came here for my daughter's birthday meal. The staff were really friendly and helpful, a nice welcome when we came in. The food was really nice and very generous portions. could only fit in room for a starter and main course, so couldn't sample the desserts, this is a handy excuse to go back again! We brought a birthday cake with us, and the staff brought it out on a board with happy birthday written on it. That was a nice touch and they sang happy birthday to my daughter, much to her embarrassment. 🤣🤣 Looking forward to my next visit.

Feels like a local pub with the added advantage of good food.

Booked meal for lunchtime 20th Sept. It wasn’t the table we booked even though the table we wanted was vacant throughout our meal. The service was very slow. The waitress was miserable and only spoke if she had to. The big problems were the service and bluebottle flies hovering over my food as I was eating. Yuk. The waiting for our food was much too long for each course. We won’t be back.

After eating at this restaurant during the Summer numerous times & leaving a 5 Star review, my family & I (total 5 adults) decided at late notice to visit the pub/restaurant without a reservation. On arrival @ 5:30pm Saturday, we we sat outside & ordered drinks & asked for menus. We were told that we could not eat as they were too busy & had plenty of reservations. Really? It was 5:30pm & there were plenty of tables available outside where we were sitting. As a result, we did not order our drinks & left. Disappointing. No wonder local pubs are struggling…. My family & I decided to go to the Dukes Head Billericay. So glad we did. The meal & service was excellent. Thank you Boars Head for not wanting our business. Constructive criticism: our last visit in the Summer your ice machine was broken. This Saturday, no Madri lager. You are a pub…no? A pub with no ice & no beer…need I say more.

After being in hospital on and off all week we thought it was time to celebrate the good news. Managed to get in the Boars Head and so pleased with my choice. Being vegan it is hard to find places that don't shove salad down your mush or awful bland curries. Boars Head not only have a lovely selection of vegan foods but their usual menu is fantastic too. My parents loved their food, as did my wife & our son. My vegan pie was AMAZING, I cannot fault the place. Staff seem nice & helpful. Seems like a place a lot of locals go but doesn't have the atmosphere of ' local shop for local people ' like so many other pubs have. We can't wait to come back, I look forward to enjoying it again!

FANTASTIC. Lovely old pub. We had lunch and everyone enjoyed their meal. We were lucky to get a table, very popular pub at lunchtime. Booking in advance recommended for Sunday. Very good value. Six meals and 12 drinks for less than £150. Looking forward for an excuse to return.

Went for lunch and had a wonderful meal. The menu together with the specials provided an excellent range of choice and I chose the Lamb Rump shepherds pie followed by the Chocolate Fondant for dessert. Both were very good, hot and very tasty. I would particularly mention the young lady who served us,Emily, she was very efficient making sure we had everything we needed and looked after us very well. A credit to the pub.

My husband and our friends go to the Boars Head quite regularly and the food service and atmosphere is always great. We went for lunch today and our waitress was Emily who was polite and attentive.
