The Olde Dog Inn in Brentwood

We booked this venue to gather after my son's funeral. 30 people. We were allowed access out of hours to set up our memory table and memorial book. The food was fresh and plentiful (although it would have benefitted from some salad garnish - if I'm being picky!) and the bar tab proved to be very reasonable. The environment was clean and spacious and the staff were unobtrusive and efficient. It was as stress-free for me as it could be as all I had to do was concentrate on my guests. I would like to thank the management and staff and we plan to visit for meals in the future.

I booked this restaurant never having been here. I am so glad I did, we will definitely be coming back. It is the best roast dinner we have had at a restaurant. The size and quality of the food was excellent. The staff are exceptional. So happy, friendly and absolutely brilliant. Nothing was any bother.

We travelled down from Cheshire to Essex for a family function in Billericay on the Saturday and ate at The Olde Dog Inn on the Friday evening. My wife booked our table in advance by telephone as it was close to our accommodation. A text message confirmation was received immediately after our booking. We were a party of five and we were warmly greeted and shown to our table on arrival. The pub is an old timbered building, a bit wonky and full of character. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced: the Specials Board is probably the biggest that I have seen ! There is a good selection of well kept local real ales. The food arrived promptly and was excellent. We liked the fact that, in addition to the usual desserts, one could opt for a smaller dessert which came with a hot drink for an all inclusive price. We've eaten at many pubs over the years but this was the best in recent times by a country mile. We're looking forward to finding an excuse to return to Essex soon !

This was the first time here ,,,it did not disappoint , there were 4 dinning ,, All about the pub was appealing the decor etc A real true olde English pub/restaurant The food was excellent served up by staff who really enjoyed their job , quite an extensive menu , and good selection of beer etc We were greeted with enthusiasm by the staff also a warm welcome from the locals that were there , We enjoyed a really memorable evening We will certainly be visiting here again very soon ,,,, i would certainly recommend THE OLDE DOG to all , give it a go we did and did not regret it 👍👍👍👍

Visited here many times and always enjoyed. Never had a bad meal, staff courteous, food great, lots of choice and a perfect cosy pub for an autumn day or evening

The food was fabulous. Home prepapred & home cooked. No mass produced products. Roast potatoes crispy & flavoursome. Roast beef melted in your mouth. Dessert Pecan & Toffee roulade yummy. Will definitely be taking my parents back. Nice selection of Ales Plenty of parking. And if you do have children a nice little enclosed play area.

The young man serving us was great and very helpful with advice and recommendations. The food was delicious and service brilliant, highly recommend this restaurant and will be back again for another lovely Sunday roast

Old pub with cool interior on a hot day! Nice Sunday lunch. Good value.

Very busy, had new staff who didn’t have a clue. Tossing their long untied hair about. They took us to our seats and then left us half hour before coming back to ask if we wanted drinks. Then promptly walked away without asking if we were ready to order our food. Brought our drinks over and again whisked off without our food order. Another half hour someone came and asked if were ready to order. Food arrived twenty minutes later and was lovely, but when we asked to order more drink, were told to go to the bar. Not good, could understand if we were outside, but we wasn’t. After our main meal arrived all lovely again, we wasn’t asked if we needed and condiments etc. I also had to take a knife from another table. We also decided that we weren’t going even ask for the dessert menu this time, and we just wanted to leave and didn’t ask for the bill until we went to the bar, instead of waiting for it at the table. This has put us off coming here, but the food was lovely as usual, just the service let it down.

On our last visit we tried the Ploughmans and it was well worth the trip, loads of cheese and ham, 3 types of pickle, apple, salad, bread etc so didn't finish it all. Great taste, display and presentation by Liv in the kitchen

A good variety of food for choice and did not take too long too long to complete the order considering the amount of people at the Old Dog that evening. Had a very good evening.

The staff were mostly good. The food was tasty with ample amounts. A few too many peas and little of other greens would be our only criticism .

I've been here a few times over the years. It's lovely old country pub with good pub grub. I haven't given it 5 stars because service was a little slow and the toilets were grimy and needed a good clean.

I have been a customer of the Olde Dog since 1968. It has always been welcoming. The staff are friendly, the ambience is good and the food is 1st class.

Great food good selection of beers real ales gin cider large garden plenty of parking can reserve tables good for parties etc

Arrive a little late, but that wasn’t an issue. Order taken quickly and huge plate of food arrived. We shared an unctuous posset for dessert, which was again large. Service good, not terribly busy food side, hence relatively quiet which was great for us.

We had the skate, a vegetable tart and a goats cheese salad for lunch. All were generous portions and very tasty. The house wine was good quality. Quick service by pleasant staff. Plenty of parking and clean loos.

Lovely meal and a fun night at the monthly quiz. Looking forward to our next visit already.

Whilst the service and the quality of the food was excellent, the evening dinner menu was very limited.

Good food as always , but service terrible . I realise it was busy , but we sat with empty plates on the table for over an hour , prob missed out on a few dessert sales 🥲

visited yesterday with family not impressed we arrived at one pm and waited ages to be seated the place was empty !! staff not happy and made us all feel uncomfortable!! we all had the roast dinner which was awful meat was tough potatoes was processed no taste and it was barely hot !! we used to go here frequently years ago and food was always great but not yesterday !! do yourself a favour don’t go there !! there’s far better places to eat in essex

I would recommend this pub to anyone. The food was good with a good selection on the board and the main menu. The desserts were lovely. There was a good selection of draught beers on tap and the staff were great.

We went on a Friday for fish and chips. The food was lovely, beer and wine good. Service excellent from friendly staff. We’ll definitely go again.

We had a really nice Sunday lunch for my parents’ birthdays yesterday - the food was home cooked and very tasty, service very efficient and the environment was cosy. We were really surprised how reasonable the price was when the bill arrived too. Will definitely be returning!

VISITED 2 DAYS RUNNING BOTH DAYS EVERYTHING VERY GOOD, SERVICE HAPPY WITH A SMILE, fOOD, VARIED MENU A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM THE NORM EVERY DISH WAS WELL PORTIONED WELL COOKED AND CAME AS A DISH WITHOUT HAVING TO ORDER VEG SEPARATELY. SPACING BETWEEN TABLES WAS A LITTLE TIGHT BUT UNDERSTANDABLE AND IT WAS SUFFICIENT. WE WILL BE BACK.

A lovely Sunday roast at The Olde Dog, Herongate. Huge carpark. Good value for money and efficient, friendly service. A highlight for us was the excellent beer - a good range of different beers and good quality. Not too much choice for dessert; as someone who doesn't like chocolate - I would have liked to have seen a crumble on the menu.

Came for Sunday lunch for my Wifes birthday food was really good our 2 young grandchildren both cleared there plates which doesnt always happen.Nice relaxed lunch with very attentiive staff.Reccomended

Lovely Sunday roast - great potatoes ! The young staff members were very pleasant. Only problem, I couldn't tip as much as I wanted to, as the tip cannot be added to the card machine and I only had limited cash. Will definitely go again

Fast service and lovely food with attentive staff

Cosy comfortable surroundings, staff were delightful and efficient. Unfortunately the food was over cooked and the menu choice was limited.

Haven’t been here for years but the food and service were still as good as I remembered! Beef pie was delicious, as was the raspberry and white chocolate meringue roulade. Would recommend.

We both only had a main course of Haddock & chips, which was lovely. It arrived piping hot, with mushy peas in it's own pot and also Tartare sauce in a separate pot. The Waitresses were very kind, efficient and polite and the food was very reasonable. The only negative point was that it was a bit drafty in the back room.

Went to the Olde Dog to celebrate my birthday with friends. From moment we arrived staff were friendly and helpful. Good choice of food, Christmas Festive Menu, classic menu and specials board, such a choice and so delicios. Served by Dawn, and Carole , who were very attentive and very friendly Thoroughly recommended it.😁

Cold inside. Side order came after I had eaten my main. Dirty and musty smell all around. A table next to us spilt a pint of shandy which dripped on the chair next to me and it never got wiped. The shandy also sprayed onto my coat!

Arrived at for lunch with friends, we chose the pub based of reviews and word of mouth. Arrived got seated, after 5 mins we were asked for our drinks order, I asked what beers were on tap, the waitress didn’t know and too 5 mins to check, well this was a start of things to come! Drinks arrived and food followed after 20mins, well at least for my friends. After 5 mins at called a different waitress over and asked where my food was, she went to check. After 10 mins she returned and asked what I had ordered. At this point I was angry and no longer hungry due to embarrassment of not eating with my friends. My friend said we will take it away as I will be hungry. 20 mins later the bill arrived with a sandwich and chips wrapped up in silver foil all sweaty, even worse not what I ordered. After at further 10 mins with no waitress coming to take payment, we chose to pay at the bar. I said to the waitress/bar lady, I note my beer is still on the bill and I refused to pay for the beer out of sheer disgust. Suddenly the bar manager (man) came over and said why are you not paying for your beer, I explained the above, the reaction was what’s wrong with the beer then you can pay for that. I again refused to pay for the beer and said surely if you received the service I have today, you would want to give me a free beer out of respect. The bar manager and his attidtude towards customers and customer service is disgusting. I will make it my life’s mission tell everyone I know in the area of the service recieved and never grace you with my presence again. Honestly, you couldn’t applogise for your errors, serve up a meal in foil, expect me to pay for my drink, be rude and think that is ok,

A very pleasant pub/ restaurant for a cosy good quality meal. This was a business meeting, and it managed to have atmosphere while being quiet enough to converse. Very good service with personality. Would go again and would recommend to others.

The Olde Dog is a good old fashioned country pub. Where you receive a warm welcome. Comfortable surroundings.The food is wholesome and plentiful. The menu may not be the biggest but the quality is fantastic. All washed down with a good ale.

The Olde Dog is the lunch venue for the meeting with former colleagues. It’s convenient for us all to travel and we keep returning since the food is of a high standard and we like the ambiance of the restaurant. Would thoroughly recommend!

Had a superb lunch with friends. The food was amazing and served hot by Carol who was extremely helpful and did her upmost to accommodate all our requirements. Carol is certainly an asset to the company. No wonder why the pub was extremely busy.

I can’t understand why this restaurant isn’t packed out. The food and service was excellent. We have been here many times and never had a bad experience. We dined Saturday night and would have thought it would be a lot busier. I think they also have a large selection of real ales too if that your thing. Anyway leaving this positive review as I think they deserve it. Thanks.

There was a good selection of food choices, which is sometimes worrying, but not here. We all enjoyed our dishes and the service was great. Friendly pub, good, reasonably priced food and plenty of space.

As usual the food and beer is excellent, I can heartily recommend it.

It's a lovely old pub with a welcoming atmosphere and great beer. Unfortunately the food was below par. Insulted by price given portion size of cauliflower starter, definitely did not taste or look freshly prepared.(Iceland maybe). Salmon and noodles so oily it spoiled it and risotto was a congealed blob. Did not resemble risotto rice at all. Very expensive for a non meat dish. Lamb shank however was outstanding. The local beer saved the day. The pud style dinners coming out however look great. Should have stuck to 'something' and chips. Those portions look great. The beer saved the day. Would go back but maybe only to drink now.

Very nice food, quite a lot of choice but just like numerous other restaurants it’s either chips or mash. What ever happened to roast or boiled potatoes. Only other comment was that the service was very slow. Wait nearly 45 minutes for our food.

Not been here before, chose it because it was one of the few places open on a monday and we like to try different restaurants. The pork and beef you could not chew, roast potatoes were hard

It wasn’t great . We wouldn’t go back . The staff were nice but the food was very average for the money . The halloumi sticks were over a £1 each ! I had the pie of the day which was very dry , no sauce with it and frozen veg . Really not great . It was cold when we got there so had to keep our coats on . Very underwhelming experience .

The staff were very helpful. My sister was late for the time we booked I explained the situation and it wasn’t a problem. We had a lovely meal we weren’t hurried in any way. In fact we spent a lovely afternoon there.

First time in several years that we’ve been to the old dog inn. Went because of historic use by ourselves and guests. Restaurant was very quiet but many in bar area making quite a bit of noise. Good menu choice. Place very clean

We had a roast dinner of turkey & all the trimmings, one of my roast potatoes on the outside was a bit chewie so only ate half, the rest of the dinner was good especially the meat. I had an Eton Mess which was delicious, my partner had cherry sponge pud & custard. All good. My only gripe was we would of preferred the gravy separate rather than already on our dinner.
