I went for an evening meal, I was welcomed by Jo and Dave upon entry. Very polite and professional customer service, with a happy and bubbly energy. I ordered 1 of the burgers and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised (1st time eating here) It was cooked to perfection. It was cooked and brought out by Emma who was also very polite and bubbly. Also checked in to make sure everything was ok. Absolutely amazing, I will definitely be returning. A massive thankyou to Jo, Dave and Emma for making my experience at the grapes a good 1. Thankyou once again.

Surprised to see so many good reviews. Came in just after lunch for a drink and so my heavily pregnant wife could take a short break from having walked around for a lot of the morning. Had our dog with us and as soon as entered were told no dogs allowed and had to be in courtyard area. No problem as wasn’t aware of the no dogs inside policy. Politely asked where courtyard was. Given half hearted directions and as we were making our way there next comment was ‘and you can’t eat those in here’… I looked in my hand and she was pointing at a brown paper bag of dog treats bought from the pet shop around the corner! Safe to say didn’t make it to the courtyard only quickly to the exit door. Plenty more friendly and better places in the town one of which we ended up at. Blessing in disguise.

Great to discover a friendly, traditional pub with excellent value food. Made us feel welcome and went the extra mile to cook a smaller meal for one of us - really appreciated :) Obviously a popular spot for locals to drop in for a chat and a pint but it wasn't too noisy for us chat and enjoy the meal together. Loved the music choices too.

We went here for food but the majority of the food on the Greene King menu wasn't on their menu for some reason so very little in vegan food options. They also said they weren't doing cocktails, which is odd as vodka and orange is a cocktail and they have lots of spirits behind the bar. Anyway the pub is a bit old and tattered and not really that friendly. There are much better pubs to frequent in Bury (including the Weatherspoons and I don't like Weatherspoon pubs)! The value was good as they do pre-dinner deals.

I’d enquired whether they’d have space at lunch time as I knew they were central and could be busy. In the end they had held a table. I forgot to ask and they forgot to tell me they ran tabs. Anyhow, the roast beef which appears on the standard menu was a nice large and well cooked roast. A short while after my meal arrived I started hearing reports of one hour delay on food as the kitchen was struggling. In the end they said a rough delay of 30 mins on desert. This was fine for me, but it was clear the kitchen was struggling and ended up stopping service it seems. As I could hear the smoke alarm going off, I must admit on a Sunday, one member of staff in the kitchen is too few, it’s a shame as they do good food but can’t cope if there’s not enough staff.

Couldn't do an all day breakfast or mixed grill because according to the waitress they are 'just a small franchise', why would you have a menu out if you can't even cook what's on it? The least the manager could do would be to create a scaled down menu, it's a no brainer.

It came after 50 mins and everything except roast potatoes were cold. As we needed to go get back to the car to save getting a ticket we just left. Just be warned if they say they are busy, don’t bother waiting, go somewhere else. Very disappointing but staff friendly.

Whenever I visit Bury St. Edmunds I find myself irresistibly drawn to The Grapes. I know exactly why this is. The Grapes is simply the best pub I have ever encountered in nearly a lifetime's existence in East Anglia, The Midlands and the South West. One of its greatest distinctions is that although it is quite a large premise it manages to create and sustain an atmosphere which is spacious but cosy, roomy but personable. Apart from this, there are two main reasons for my rating: 1) Green King's Abbbot Ale is always in perfect condition and I am unable to say that about any other pub where I have drunk that delicious beer. I would rather pay for a pint of Abbot at The Grapes than have a free one in practically any other pub I know. ( One exception is the White Hart in Sudbury. ) 2) The Grapes is a pub where you are made to feel welcome, whether you're a regular or an occasional visitor; and this sense of warmth, affability and general goodwill is largley due to the example of the Manager ( 'Lou', I think ), who is a beacon of cheerful hospitality. As if this were insufficient in itself to recommend The Grapes, I would add that it offers a good range of beers and spirits, including - as a September-only challenge - Green King's 'The Abbot's Confession', an 8.3 ABV revelation that every beer drinker should try ( if only once ). Finally, I advise any discerning toper as follows: if you're in Bury St. Edmunds, whatever else you do don't miss out on The Grapes. And if your normal routes don't take you to or near Bury, then make a special journey. You'll find it more than worth your while.

I was going to rate this place as 'poor' as opposed to 'terrible', but then struggled to think of anything positive to say about it. We wanted some dinner, so dropped in here by chance. Bad choice. The table we grudgingly sat down at was filthy. The manager is hideously rude and ungrateful and the staff are unfriendly and unhelpful, they cannot make drink recommendations, they don't understand their bar at all. The food was below par, tepid and undercooked, no garnish. Hardly edible and not particularly nice. The gents downstairs are pretty disgusting, smelly & dank. The beer was off, quite possibly caused by the look of abject misery on the dark haired bartenders face. Revolting is an under statement.

I rarely criticise on this website, but I'll.make an exception. The service was incredibly rude - a youngish dark haired man making clearly acidic remarks about my friend's wine request, and not returning our smiles or thanks: he clearly doesn't want to work here. About 1 tablespoon of meat, pasta over cooked, and far too much cheese topping. Others in the small group did not eat all of their meals either. Pie crust hard, chips were not much better. The gammon we asked to change to the cod and chips - this was not available either. The 2 mixed grills changed to all day breakfast. I ended up with ham egg and chips - not the same. This was lunch time on a Saturday, heaven help anyone going any later, probably nothing left to order. It needs sorting badly - they will lose customers rapidly. We were visiting from North Lincolnshire, not the way to treat a tourist.

Love this place; have been there a few times and the drinks are always reasonably priced and the music is always good fun.

Pity this pub. Sad waited 25 mins just to get a drink. Poor bar man on his own. Not how a pub should be run. Big up to this bloke going solo. Food very very late. Such a Shame. Greene king pub n only 2 staff. One cooking one bar!! That's not a pub... very very disappointed. Defo won't be back...

My partner and I visited early on a Saturday evening and found the pub very quiet for a city centre pub. They had a few beers available on tap but I had a glass of red wine. It was terrible and I couldn't finish the glass. We did not try the food so cant comment. The pub had signs that a live band would be playing and they were due to start about 10pm.

Visited for the 1st time today as this was out 1st visit to Bury also. Arrived about 2.30pm, grabbed a table easily then ordered our food and drinks. Lady behind bar very polite and chatty (had tatoos on her arms). Food arrived around 15mins after we ordered. Both 8oz steaks were perfect and my salad portion was overflowing the plate as I requested salad instead of chips. Very, very happy with everything and would certainly return. Well done.

Great Live music on a weekend fun atmosphere but queue at the bar can move very slowly and the toilets could use an upgrade.

Went to BSE on a shopping trip, not being local we popped in for a drink and something to eat. Both my wife and I had Lasagne which I have to honest is one of the best pub Lasagne's we've had.Only one young lady serving behind the bar and bringing the meals, she was very friendly and pleasant so well done her.The pub needs a bit of a spruce up but I recommend the place....

Food review on hold until kitchen open, but this is a traditional Grade II listed English pub - sorry, does mean watch your head. See the pubs in Midsomer Murders, with real atmosphere and genuine locals enjoying excellent hand-pumped Brakspears ales. New young and enthusiastic tenants bring sparkle to the establishment.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.

Very rude landlord not at all sympathetic to an autistic young adult whom had never been in a pub before wasn’t sure what he was doing, was told to leave as he didn’t speak to the landlord on entry and didn’t order a drink straight away he was finding his bearings as being autistic was in a very unfirmiliar atmosphere
