There are clear reasons that The Grapes is one of the busiest proper bars in the city, and these are, without a doubt, the incredible staff, who are very welcoming and friendly, the service, the selection, which is extensive, but I have worked hard at clearing their gin stock. The atmosphere is wonderful, completely similar to the stunning physical characteristics of the building.

We happened upon The Grapes on a Friday lunchtime and the Friday lunchtime offer of tapas and a bottle of wine - four small plates and a bottle of wine for £29.95, lured us in. The barman that served us was charming, and paid huge attention to making sure our wine glasses were sparkling clean, which is very much appreciated. The chef, who brought the food out personally, was also friendly and seemed to genuinely care whether we enjoyed it. The four small dishes we chose were generous, really delicious, presented nicely and most importantly freshly cooked. It was a perfect lunch.

Well I ordered a bun which got given to the wrong person who took great joy in explaining how much better it was than the pizza he ordered they tried to give me, which to be fair did look a lot worse then my bun which he had already finished. When I said I ordered a bun I was told I ordered a pizza... I spent around £15 and had 1 beer... Unfortunately I had to leave as I ran out of time but I had made it clear I hadn't much time when I ordered, and if I had I actually received my order there would have been plenty of time to finish it... Service just isn't what it used to be anymore is it... It's the staff that make a place special... Let's hope my bank refund me.

After a lengthy period of closure, it's great to see the Grapes open once again. The only traditional pub left in George Street, it hasn't changed too much inside, although the menu has more to offer than previously. It's still not really a dining pub, the menu focusing on things like burgers and pizzas, and there are plenty of visitors who just come here for a drink. We dined and thoroughly enjoyed our burgers. My main criticism of the place is the vast majority of tables are those high ones, with stools to sit on - fortunately we managed to find a standard table with chairs to sit on, down the far end of the pub. On the bar there is an excellent range of ales to choose from, some local, and all from small scale breweries.

This was the only pub I visited in Oxford, that I wished I hadn't bothered with. It has a prime position on George street near lots of other bars, restaurants and the theatre but it doesn't make the most of this in my opinion. As I like to visit as many bars as I can, I have a lot of soft drinks, lemonade on this occasion, so I will not comment on the range or quality of the drinks, or indeed, the food. It was the vibe that was all wrong for me. All the other pubs in the area were buzzing whilst the Grapes was strangely quiet. We walked in and the server came up from the end of the bar where she was talking with someone. She served us and returned to her conversation with no pleasantries with us, the customers. It was the same with the other customers who came in whilst we were there, just no interaction other than the bare minimum and then straight back to the end of the bar. It reminded me just how important friendly, engaging staff are. As a result, it was a pub full of strangers as no one seemed to know anyone else. Good staff will get a conversation flowing, but sadly not here. We drank up quickly and will not be returning, in a city full of gems, why would we?

A disappointing visit to The Grapes, which is a shame as this could be a wonderful venue. I ordered a Tía María but was greeted with confusion from the waitress. I understand if the drink isn't stocked in your bar but an apology would go a long way! The drinks came quickly...and at the same time as the card reader. I don't feel that this is standard practice, to pay before you have begun your drink, and hope that this is a policy you review. A great location and fabulous interior, I feel this has the beginnings to be something so much better.

What a change since this pub has been taken over by the West Berkshire Brewery and modernised. It really was a grotty city centre dump before, if I'm brutally honest, but now it's a temple to interesting and definitely real ales and lagers. The food is an interesting and very alternative take on traditional pub grub. Loved the concept that you order the chips and choose the accompaniment to go with them, a great way of looking at a menu from a different angle. It was busy on a weekday lunchtime, with a nice atmosphere. Sadly I only had time for a quick drink, but it'll be on my hit list for a much longer stay next time I'm in Oxford. If only more pubs were like this one!

Food was exceptional and the range of drinks and beers was frankly mind blowing. But it was the team of staff that made the experience so great. Romy couldn’t do enough to please and all of us and really knew her stuff and James was equally nice and his coffee rounded off a great meal and several great drinks just perfectly - big thumbs up from us and the dog - will be back whenever we are nearby — oh and the jalapeño poppers

This was my first visit to this hostelry since it changed hands. It is now run by the West Berkshire Brewery who produce some excellent ales. There are seven handpumps mostly serving West Berkshire product, but about two are given over to 'outside' brews which also come from small independent breweries, making this one of the best ale venues in Oxford. Food is mainly snack type stuff, reasonably priced and decent quality. I had a Pulled Pork & Crackling sandwich which I enjoyed very much, but I have a couple of comments to make about this: (1) the so called crackling was just a few tiny pieces of inedible rind; (2) the sandwich included roasted peppers - not an issue for me, in fact they enhanced the whole thing but with no mention of peppers on the menu, there could be a nasty surprise in store for someone ordering this who does not like peppers. Overall though, this place is an asset to the Oxford pub scene.

Smallish narrow-fronted pub in central Oxford. This pub has gone through various guises over recent years and there were question marks over its future at one point, but now, happily, it has reverted to its original name and thriving once again as a traditional pub. Good Old Boy from West Berkshire seems to be the regular ale and there are one or two others on offer mostly from smaller breweries. The food consists mainly of pizzas, burgers and 'small plates', which is basically another name for snacks. Come here between 12-2pm weekdays and they offer any pizza for £5 (normally priced up to £9.50), which is excellent value. They're decent enough pizzas although not as good as those at the nearby White Rabbit, but if you're only paying £5 you can't complain. There are also different offers on certain evenings, such as 2-for-1 deals on pizzas or burgers.
