This is a really nice pub, comfy and friendly and of course with a great vegetarian/vegan menu. We love to pop in when we're visiting Oxford.

The food is absolutely delicious!! I went with a friend who was vegan and there were loads of vegan options. I especially recommend the mushroom pie, it was so tasty and the gravy was delicious! Although the restaurant is a bit out of the way of Oxford center it is definitely worth the walk to have such quality food. 10/10

Don't bother, it's nice food but the service is terrible. Booked a table to have lunch but when we arrived were told it was a two hour wait for food because they had a high number of walk ins. Now that's fine if you don't take bookings and are busy, but unacceptable if you do allow people to book as we could have had a lovely Sunday lunch elsewhere at the time we chose had they not accepted our booking, knowing they have no system to actually honour these when busy. They also tried to claim every pub in Jericho would have the same wait, but the next place we tried were not taking walk ins so they could serve the people who had booked, and the third place sat us and fed us straight away.

Vegan food served in this pub. The tastiest food I have ever experienced. I was skeptical at first as I am not vegan but I was blown away. Felt satisfying after the meal. In fact I came back another night to try something else on the menu. Highly recommended.

Stumbled upon this place as we were trying to find somewhere that was still serving food at 8:30pm, so glad we did! Great vegetation / vegan menu. Mushroom pie and "chicken" kebab bowl both very good. Pub has a really good traditional vibe to it too, nothing pretentious, just a good time. Lost a star only because there wasn't any decent cider on offer, I was hoping an independent place like this might have a nice scrumpy or something. Will definitely make an effort to come back when I'm next in the area!

I've been living out of the country for a while and was in desperate need of some real pub food. Surprisingly, as a country guy, the gardener's arms hit every point straight on for a pub experience, I had a lovely evening. If that experience is what you're looking for then this is the place. Other reviews talk about there being table service only, this wasn't the case on my visit, I ordered at the bar. I do think there's a balance to be had with bar service plus the option to order via website etc, but again I wanted to feel at home in a pub, so for me this was great. We sat outside on a Monday evening in April and the atmosphere was lovely, several groups of locals enjoying a chat and a pint. Nicely furnished with cosy lighting, and the electric heaters were very much appreciated. The interior feels like a classic pub, not your brighter chain pub-style decor, and it got much cosier once the evening lights switched on. The mushroom pie here really hit the spot, absolutely delish and went down a treat with a pint. My partner had the fully loaded fries, which we'll definitely also recommend. Props to the chefs for some fantastic cooking and a great menu, everything on there sounds good! I never expected it, but it's just wonderful to be able to sit and look at the menu and just pick whatever, and have to even think about whether it's vegetarian or not. Fantastic place, a real surprise gem of the UK, highly recommended.

An absolute find. My vegetarian wife and I found this fine establishment after I chose our restaurant the following night in advance whilst on a little road trip. I was a little non-plussed as I was in the mood for meaty goodness and knew this pub would certainly not harbour any juicy animal products. It was busy and had plenty of reservations but we managed to get a table. 80s music wafted through the air like nectar and the manager (wonderfully charismatic in his curiosity killed the cat beret) was welcoming and chatty. I had the loaded fries. 3 different kinds of faux meat. They all tasted different, the food was delicious - not some homogeneous death by soya that I feared. The beer was great. My wife had the kebab which was amazing too. We were both happy and I, despite being starving was fulfilled. Well done gardeners arms, you were amazing.

GREEN pub grub. What's not to like, veggie folk ? This spit and sawdust independent local pub is a real find. First, it's a proper pub...the kind that is disappearing behind the glitz and sparkle of franchised breweries. If you like the glitz and sparkle, you should STILL come here...for the food and service. Folks are friendly, location is pleasant (on a residential road)...like walking into the Rover's Return Inn - for those of you who know...you know. This gem was recommended by a stranger enjoying a brew at the Bird and Blend...took a bit to locate it, since 4G wasn't working, but ever so glad I made it there. Dirty fries are SOOOO good. Go. You are not likely to be disappointed, and compared to another veggie pub on the water in the same town...hands down a superior experience just from the way they make you feel as you enter.

The Gardeners Arms is my favorite pub in Oxford. It retains the classic English pub experience while serving an entirely vegetarian menu - and unlike places that end up with a fancy menu in the name of vegetarianism, the menu here feels very much like a pub, with dirty fries, Mexican chili, mushroom pie and burgers that are EXCELLENT. It's my go to recommendation for folks looking for a nice comfy time at a pub, more so if they're looking for veg food. Do note, like any good pub, the service is slow and the tables are sticky. The staff are all lovely, so this isn't a slight to them, it's just not a full service restaurant and thus one must temper their expectation of prompt table service.

Loved it. Just loved everything here. Have been quite a few times and it's a go to place after a nice day. Just to end the day with the best meal. Friendly staff and service. Make sure to book in advance as it can get quite busy sometimes. Sunday nights are quiz nights which was much more fun. The best place for Vegans and vegetarians in Oxford. A MUST TRY. Must must try. This was the place I wanted to be on my birthday for my special dinner date. And it was the best decision for that day. First we had a calzone and a burger which amused us. And then the surprise kept coming for all the other dishes. Chilli hot dog. Never expected red lentil can be used in many ways. The mushroom pie was another delicious one. Hot chilli garlic bread is another must try. For that price you get a burger with toppings and sauces of your choice and a bowl of fries. We usually order Cajun fries or Cajun fries with cheese. The curried mayo here is the star. Try Southern fried vegan burger with curried mayo and special hot sauce with other mayo or sauce and toppings of your choices you won't regret. The spinach calzone is our comfort food here. Fully loaded fries and dirty fries won't upset a fries lover. Toilets are in the back. Neat. There is seating outside in the back or inside. The place is quite cozy for groups to chill out. Last batch of friends hanging out or a single person who likes to read a book. There are books around here. The street beside it is where u can park your car. But there are only limited spaces. Really talented chef and he is a very good cook.

Acceptable vegetarian food heavily focused on synthetic meat substitutes. Staff reasonable. You can't go too far wrong here, but I also can't see much upside. The Gardeners arms is my favourite pub in Oxford. We regularly go to their pub quiz, which seems to have flown under the student radar and is therefore less rowdy and a much cozier atmosphere! The food is great but the service is appalling. Our food was served with no offer of cutlery or condiments. When I asked the KP if we could have cutlery was told that chef needed them. They never returned to our table . I am always happy to get my own cutlery but it wasn’t anywhere obvious. I then had to join a queue waiting for drinks to get cutlery from the bar staff. I have no doubt this is a staffing issue but nevertheless the service needs to be better

I would have given a "negative" rating if it were possible. I witnessed one of the rudest encounters in this country, which to me was entirely inexplicable. I saw the head waiter, possibly even the restaurant owner, shouting across the entire garden at a customer who was seated there. The customer apparently brought food from outside, which could go against the pub policy or common courtesy (there were no signs of this anywhere in thepub!). However, the way the waiter acted, creating a scene in front of the whole pub and very rudely ejecting the customer from the place, was something I had never seen before in the UK. The customer only uttered two words, "nicely, please," to which the waiter/owner replied, "No, not nicely," and proceeded to throw the customer out. It was disgraceful, and I was pleased to learn that the customer is taking legal action based on discrimination. Yes, the customer was a man of "colour"!

Back street local, retains table service only, which detracts from the pub experience, difficult to see the beers available at the bar, " is every customer going to ask what is available?" This is my favorite pub and eatery in Oxford by far—not least because of their pub quiz (8:30 Sundays). The quiz master (also their head chef) has a comedic acumen that distinguishes him above the rest. The atmosphere is hilarious, from chanting and singing along, to wry and sardonic commentary. Besides the quiz, their food is absolutely terrific. As an American in Oxford, it is rare I find anything spicy enough to make me blink an eye, but they have a house made scotch bonnet pepper sauce that blew my stateside mind. Their core team of servers and bartenders are sheer delights, accommodating, amusing, and willing to let your dad sample some whiskey should he be endearing (and desperate) enough. On my way home today, I lament missing out on the pub quizzes and their distinct charms. I will be back.

The best (vegan) burger I’ve ever had. Possibly because you can mix and choose to make your own perfect burger. I ordered a quarter pounder on a burger bun with everything (toppings) except for Jalapeños, and garlic mayo, bbq, and mustard for sauce. All vegan. The dirty fries were exceptional as well! They had non-alcoholic mocktails for cheap so we had those as well - perfect for the sunny outdoors. We waited for a table outside to open up while enjoying our drinks inside. The owners were exceptional with their service (surprising considering how busy the place was) and promptly moved us outdoors when a table opened up. Let them know if you’d like to sit outside when it is full so that they may look out for you. Might be subject to how busy they are.

Surly service - it was a relatively quiet afternoon when I arrived. Yet after serving the man before me, the woman behind the bar didn’t acknowledge me for two minutes while slowly puttering around doing various things. No ‘hi’, ‘I’ll be right with you’ - then I had to correct her after she pulled a full pint when I had asked for a half. Again - no ‘oh, sorry’ or any sort of customer service. I got a twice poured half with spilled beer sloshed on all sides. Seriously unfriendly vibe. Shame - looked like a decent place to become a regular at.

As someone who can't eat gluten, I was very disappointed with my food experience. All meat substitutes used contain gluten meaning fries could only be ordered with lots of veg on. As this wasn't my cup of tea the only option was a Greek salad which I was assured by the staff that people struggle to finish due to size. Sadly when it arrived it was a standard size and after an easy finish of the dish I was left still pretty hungry. For £12.95 ( overpriced for some leaves feta, onion and olives) definitely not worth it!! Lovely vibe and feel of the place but the food really let it down for me.

My husband had chilli and voted it excellent. My very vegan friend and I had mushroom pie which was just brilliant - rich brown sauce and tasty mushroom. The garlic bread was also well received. This is a vegetarian/ vegan restaurant. I am a meat eater. I went with my son (another meat eater) and his vegan partner. She usually has to make do with a hobson's choice menu, whilst we have a nice range of options to choose from, so it was a nice opportunity to allow her to have the pick of he menu. That was one plus. The rest were a result of friendly, efficient service, a cracking atmosphere generally, nice beer- the Oxford Stout was heavenly- and a very reasonably priced menu. Oh and the food, which was fantastic. All three of us had terrific plates of food. I didn't think about it being vegetarian, it was just great food. This is a gem of a place tucked away in the residential streets of Jericho. It has echos of being an old traditional local boozer, with cask and keg ale on offer alongside a wide selection of wines, gins, and other spirits. But the standout feature is the menu - completely vegetarian and mostly vegan. There is a surprisingly large outdoor space out the back too. I could imagine sitting out there on a summer evening with a cool cider. Probably advisable to book if you want food. It's quite popular

This was probably my wife and I’s absolute worst experience at any restaurant ever. Before we arrived at this restaurant, we had bought some Jaffa Cakes from a local grocery store (we are from the United States, and I was very eager to try this British snack). After we sat down at our table, I pulled out a Jaffa Cake and ate it. I could see in the corner of my eye our waiter (he was a tall male) throw his hands up as he was approaching our table. He then told me to put away the snack, which I politely did and apologized. Throughout our entire dinner experience after this occurrence, he only came to our table one more time to give us our food. Other waitresses had to serve and check on us. After my wife and I finished our meal, we waited about 15 minutes for our check. We could both see the same waiter serving other tables and hanging out at the bar talking to his co-workers, yet he never came back to our table. He even made eye contact with us a few times. After waiting so long, I finally decided to approach the bar and asked another employee if I could go ahead and pay our check. Our waiter was at the bar when I paid, and he refused to make eye contact with me as he continued talking to his co-workers. When I got back to our table, I booked our taxi back to our Airbnb. While we waited, I decided to take out my Jaffa Cakes and eat them, which FINALLY got the waiter’s attention as he made eye contact with me from the bar. He shook his head and approached our table after ignoring us for most of our dinner experience, and he again told me to put it away. I was taking my time in finishing the Jaffa Cake I was eating, and he yelled at me saying, “Seriously? Put that away!” in front of other customers around our table. After I initially ate my Jaffa Cake when we first arrived to the restaurant, I never took it out again until I was fed up with our waiter’s behavior — which was very inappropriate. My wife and I never could get the waiter’s attention to serve us until I took out the Jaffa Cakes again. I tried to be as polite as I could. I even said “thank you” to the waiter as me and my wife left the restaurant. I do not recommend eating at this restaurant to anyone. Our waiter’s inappropriate behavior ruined our dinner experience and the rest of our night. Also, the food was only okay. My wife and I were very eager to try this restaurant as it is not always easy to find vegetarian/vegan restaurants in many places (my wife is vegan).

The worst experience I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The waiter yelled at us as we entered the establishment because we were trying a cookie we had just purchased from a grocery down the street. He said, “Seriously? Put that away.” He never came back to our table after that to check how the food was, if we were ready for our check, needed refills, etc. On top of his nasty attitude and the horrible food, he avoided bringing the check to our table even after our plates were taken away and it was clear we were ready. He would look us straight in the eyes but then walk away to help another table. We had to ask someone else for our check. As we were packing our things, my husband tried another bite of the cookie to which the waiter stormed back over to our table and told us to put the cookies away this instant. He began to throw his hands up in the air and cause a scene over this cookie. It was embarrassing and uncalled for. This ruined our night. Never go here.

Truly an amazing pub. Brilliant atmosphere and friendly staff. It’s an absolute haven for anyone veggie or vegan. All the food is absolutely delicious, generously portioned, and well priced. Quite a unique experience as it offers many traditional gastro pub style options (e.g. hot dog), but the only change is the fake meat. Wholesome and flavoursome eating. Have been many times and hope to go many more!

Always great service, food and beer but please fix the hand dryer in the ladies, it's been broken for ages! Occasionally pub is a bit cold too.

I was expecting a bit more if a selection here and some of the baguettes didn’t have as much filling as other prets I’ve visited. However the food still looked good Staff were friendly and helpful at the till.

Contemptuous service awaits at the Society Café. In the absence of available table space, you’re ‘not allowed’ to stand and drink your coffee. To do so would mean you’d be ‘in the way’. If you’re standing about waiting for your coffee, though, this is seemingly fine. I’m not sure what logic this is. Tables are strictly reserved for empty-cup-nursing people eating their BYO food. Definitely a place to be avoided.
