I visited the Goudhurst Inn this evening for a meal and catch up with a friend. I am a frequent visitor and generally easy to please. I have a preference for a plant based diet so I decided to order the soup and tagine. Whilst the soup was flavoursome and served hot the tagine, rather than being served from an earthenware pot, came in overcooked dry pastry. I certainly couldn’t finish it. The two members of staff on duty were most attentive and polite and so I thought it unfair to complain directly to them, especially as I had to leave abruptly. However, overall I feel that the Goudhurst Inn should ’up their game’ or customers with a preference for vegetarian food will not return.

Every bit as good as its sister hotel The Tickled Trout. Our room was perfectly appointed and comfortable and we enjoyed a drink in the cosy, lively main bar. Supper was excellent - I opted for the fishcakes (the sauce was yummy) and the Goudhurst pie (a proper pie!) with mash and jus, while L went for the calamari followed by the hot smoked salmon Caesar salad. Breakfast was 10 out of 10. Staff brilliant all round.

The food in this pub is truly awful. Don’t go. The pizza was poor quality -; glue -like and far too many capers anchovies and tasteless olives. Cheap and nasty. Only four tables were taken on a busy Saturday night. The owners need to get a grip and raise the quality. It used to be a good place to eat when Hush Heath had it. Such a shame.

I ordered tea as did a friend and we both received one small cup containing water and a tea bag. I had to wait so long for milk that I went into the pub to find some. The greatest insult was to be charged £3 plus a 10% service charge for a cup of tea. I shall not be returning.

Average food and service poor as it usually is. Menu updated 4 days ago but website not updated and vegan options reduced but not reflected on website. Disappointing to receive tiny dessert vegan portions and charged full price despite querying. Won’t be going back

Should have read all the reviews first- v average & disappointing food, apart from the fizz taster. Thank goodness for that! I ordered the vegan and my order was taken but after 6mins, was told it was all gone but the kitchen hadn’t briefed the restaurant staff. So I ordered the vegetarian which was the special on the board, but that had all gone too - so I scrubbed it off the specials board. I ordered 2 starts which one was very salty rather than hot with harissa (hummus) and a rathe bland goats cheese & beetroot salad. Both were very average. I spotted the 4* reviews and as linked with the winery (which HAS been recommend), I thought it would be a good place to eat between the two businesses. V disappointing & would be worth the price if the food was available and better than it tasted. This has put us off to eat at the winery. One staff member said that not enough food had been ordered in, despite saying it was all freshly made and locally produced. Hard to believe it.

Since this is our local pub we have a vested interest in its success. It is a place we visit regularly, the environment is good and most of the staff are very friendly and professional. The Goudhurst Inn is promoted as “a seasonal menu showcasing British pub classics, innovative dishes and fresh stone baked pizzas”, but there seem to be no substantial changes in the menu (Spring menu just in), not even 'asparagus dishes’ in the middle of the Kent season. The food quality is inconsistent, with little innovation, sometimes mean portion control and pizzas that used to be excellent, now average. The dull pizza choices have been on for a while, the ‘Quattro formaggi’ with pieces of old-looking brie, is a poor example of this classic. In comparison, a local Lamberhurst pub, part of another group, has standard and reliable food offers, lovely staff, and good service even in pressured and busy times. Unlike the Goudhurst Inn they do get busy which is no surprise. The Goudhurst Inn has the potential to make the quantum leap back to being a number one choice. But the occasional foray into a better menu won't cut it when the move back to average routinely follows.

We were recommended to visit the Goudhurst in while staying in the area and booked for dinner. Staff who attended us were young and poor at answering questions we thought they would know and slow in service. Table we were given was average, we should have moved looking back. Food was reasonable choice and we all enjoyed it. Drinks expensive for what they were. Not an memorable meal and we will definitely look elsewhere in the area rather than coming back

We were pleasantly surprised about all aspects of this evening (having been disappointed in the past under previous management). Friendly welcome / excellent service (thanks Ruth!) all eve. Good beer. But the highlight was the food. Not an extensive menu but with enough variety please all in our party. One had a starter portion of scallops with chips and green veg as a main course and loved it. I went for the pie which was lamb with mint/ beautifully presented and not dauntingly large. Tables spread out allowing privacy, but still had an “alive” atmosphere. And to cap it all, as we live within 3 miles, we could join their locals 15% discount club (Mon-Wed) which covered all food and drink. Will definitely go back soon!

Excellent dinner. Often a good test of a restaurant is how well they do the simple, classic meals: last night’s fish and chips was, in all honesty, outstanding. Light, crispy batter, top quality fish and smooth, minty, mushy peas. The whole dish was clean-tasting, non greasy and utterly delicious. So glad to see the Inn open again and keeping standards up after the lockdowns - well done to staff and management for hitting the ground running.

being recommended by a friend. Got put at a table and nothing explained. We got told by the people next to us that you have to go to the bar to order. So we go the bar to order our drinks, we are waiting about 15 minutes as the bar staff are busy chatting to who we assume to be a group locals or friends of the pub. The bar staff almost seem annoyed to serve us, like we are interrupting. So then we come back to order our food, two at a time so someone can look after our stuff at the table, another 15 minutes with them sitting on their own.I order my food and then my friend orders hers and our other friend's food together straight after. She explained that the starter and main she had ordered are to come out at the same time and the lady behind the bar just nodded. So after 10 minutes, the starter comes out. Then, another 15 minutes later, my main (Pie). I was waiting politely for the other main before I ate my food but gave up since the other main (a pizza!) arrived 40 minutes after mine. We didn't want to queue at the bar just to ask where our food was and didn't bother ordering another drink. When we questioned the waitress, she said that it was because we ordered at different times and when we told her it was less than a minute apart, she shrugged and walked off.I guess they had just forgotten the pizza and she really just didn't care- we weren't expecting any compensation but just an explanation. We had to go back to the bar to ask for the bill. Overall just an awful experience- have only given 2 stars because the food was delicious and a great price with EOTHO.

Arrived and were treated unfriendly by a man, who showed us to a table at 18.30. The restaurant was almost empty, but we as a couple on a night out were sat right next to a family with two young children, only about 1 m away! Equally unfriendly we were told that no pork belly was available. My husband tried to order a draught beer just to be told in the same unfriendly manner that draught beer is not available yet!? I ordered a G&T and the man just walked away, I had to go after him to ask, if I can specify my G&T. The only tempting thing left on the menu was sea bass, when we came to order, we were told there is only one available! Therefore I had to order a burger, which turned out to be two dried out overcooked beef patties. The restaurant filled up and reminded more of the atmosphere in a canteen as it is one big loud room. We couldn’t wait to leave. On the positive the sea bass was good, although very expensive at £18 and the waitress was friendly and efficient. We will certainly never return, having spent £62 on two mains, one nibble and a couple of drinks, not having enjoyed one minute. The tables are too close together, the salt and pepper is in multi use grinders, which are not cleaned in between guests.

As one of 5 in a chain owned by the local winery it has potential but let down by high food and wine prices not matched by the quality and quantity. I had the special sea bass which was nicely cooked with crispy skin but turned out to be 2 small pieces of fillet maybe half a fish for £17.50. to be fair once I mentioned the small portion they did cook another portion for the 2 of us. The wine is from the winery and delicious but £8.5 for 175 ml glass was not cheap. The room was clean and airy and the bed was v comfortable. The breakfast was disappointing for me as whilst it came in an attractive hamper box (they don't do sit down breakfasts) I did not get my gluten free version I had asked for. I couldn't resolve the problem as there is no-one there in the morning to speak to as the bar door is locked and no-one answered the fancy phone.

We visited here for lunch on Tuesday. We were told we had to order at the bar because of Covid-19. There was no screen above the bar so couldn’t see what difference it made whether our order was taken from the table or bar! All other restaurants we have visited recently have been happy to provide table service! The restaurant was empty apart from my husband and I. Yet the manager and the young unfriendly waitress had time to laugh and chat amongst themselves. The food was average and ingredients not particularly fresh. The tables need a good scrub down. Food, dirt and toothpick stuck in the wooden grooves. We used to be frequent customers at the Goudhurst Inn but unless it has new management and a complete overhaul we won’t be returning.

There was no table service in the restaurant & you had to order at the bar, opposite to most other restaurants during the covid era. We were not told about the specials & were confused when other tables were being served mussels yet they were not on the menu. Then when we ordered at the bar we were told there was a gas leak (!) In the kitchen and we could only have pizzas whilst around us the mussels/main couses continued to be served. After a long wait the pizzas came and were nice but as soon as we had finished the waitress took the plates & glasses including my half empty gin ! So we decided not to order coffee/dessert & left. We arrived to fine they were using an App for us to order our food! So, we’re given a card with details. First we needed to log on to their wifi. Free but needed to give loads of details. Then we downloaded the App; open up - more details required. All this whilst other person sits twiddling their thumbs. Finally after about 15 minutes we got to start ordering. Only I have the details so read it all out. First thing: pint of shandy - beer, lemonade, but no option for shandy. Ordered drink not really wanted! Found the food ok, so now came to pay. There’s a government scheme for half price on Mon to Wednesday. No option for this so it was full price. At this point 20 + minutes in, Ive had enough and announce we are not eating here again. So I go into the bar to enquire about the discount, at which point the bar woman says: if you want I can do your order here!!! So we did in less than 5 minutes! So we’ve been there almost half an hour and just managed to order!! The rest was great, but be warned - go to the bar to order!

We felt very safe at The Goudhurst Inn during this pandemic. We were greeted at the 'welcome desk' outside on the terrace, offered hand sanitiser and asked to provide out names and contact details for Track and Trace purposes. We found a seat, then I downloaded the free Hush Heath Hospitality App onto my phone, so we could order food and drink without having to go to the bar each time. It worked really well. Even on the one occasion we actually went in to the bar, it was very quiet, so maintaining a safe distance from others was easy. We could see the tables were spaced at a safe distance, which was also re-assuring at this time. The pizzas are great! I had fennel sausage and broccoli, whilst hubby had courgette and salami. Both had a lovely thin crispy base - just how we like them. The Inn itself feels cosy, yet spacious. There is a huge terrace and garden, and dogs seem to be very welcome! The service was good. The team didn't stop running about all the time we were there. They were very safety-conscious too, and we saw them properly sanitising and cleaning tables once guests had finished eating and left. Where do I start... Goudhurst, a quaint little village. Not many pubs/restaurants but the Goudhurst Inn used to be one of the good ones. Well not anymore. Firstly we were presented with a piece of card to download their app. Not only to view and order our food but our drinks as well. First problem, signal isn’t great in Goudhurst so couldn’t download the app! Asked if they had WiFi which they did but not easy to connect to and so by the time we connected to the WiFi and downloaded the app it had been 15 minutes and all we wanted to do was order a drink! Anyway ordered and paid for our drink, another 10 minutes for it to arrive. Then looked at menu.... 7 things to choose from, 2 fish, 2 burgers, vegetarian curry, Caesar salad or broad bean risotto. Or there was pizza. What a choice for what was once an amazing restaurant. By this time we really couldn’t be bothered so decided to just share a pizza. Food was lovely but was still bought to us by a waitress who had to put the plate on the table. When asked why we couldn’t order with a person we were told because of social distancing. But there allowed to put a plate on our table without wearing a face mask but can’t stand a metre back and ask us what we’d like to order. Makes no sense at all. Not sure what sort of clientele your intending to attract but we certainly won’t be returning. You have no chance of attracting the older generation if they have to go through all what we went through this evening. Completely ruined our evening. And Hush Heath is meant to be a reputable brand. The so called “operations team” need to get down to the restaurant and ask themselves why there is no customers on a Saturday night because I now surely know why. If other restaurants can get it so right after lock down why can’t get the Goudhurst Inn. Feel so sorry for the staff who have obviously dealt with complaint after complaint but no sign of management at all. I bet Richard Balfour was having a lovely evening though!! Sort yourselves out Hush Heath!!!

The only thing I thought was wrong was the lack of any menu's/black boards which meant it all had to be done on the app (although you could order/pay at the bar) which was fine for us but my elderly grandparents would have really struggled had they been on their own. I'm not sure why disposable menu's couldn't be used or wipe clean laminated ones - also, having to pay for everything as you go was a little annoying. Only criticisms on the food were:-- Baked camembert needed a jam/chutney served with it and another slice of bread- Caesar Salad was a little 'lettuce heavy' But other than that, couldn't really fault it - my partner is vegan and there was plenty of choice for her too. Would definitely visit again

We stayed for one night at goudhurst inn goudhurst thinking should be good we stay at tickled trout and that's great.Wrong ! Room was quite nice large at back. Very clean.few points no plug by mirror to do hair. No water in room but nice tea..We was told after we checked in and asked ourselves that they weren't doing breakfast due to covid etc. Faur enough but the site their own said breakfast included. We would not have paid £100 for a Wednesday night without breakfast .we was told manager would be told . No sign of him until we went to dinner then he said they could do a continental!.dinner was ok but we had to order on an app.others couldnt download it .the continental was awful. Obviously left out all night stale bread no butter. No fruit no juice. In the fridge milk that was off dates 12th july. We didn't partake and left swiftly .nobody around to speak to.Sorry hush heath company we wont be returning .on previous nights we had good hotel stays in rye and winchelsea who managed the current covid situation well.

I am a local and have visited the Goudhurst Inn quite a few times. After our lunch last Sunday, I now feel compelled to write! This is a 'gastro' pub, lovely interior and affiliated to the Hush Heath dynasty so expectations are high. The following is pretty much identical to previous experiences……Service - disengaged, extremely slow and when presented with the bill showing an overcharge of three desserts, a mere mumble of apology. Food – took an hour to arrive. One of our party had a dried-up, shrivelled tiny portion of fish and over cooked chips. The rest of us had the cauliflower steak roast. A plate of tepid overcooked vegetables and a Yorkshire pud that was so old and tired I couldn’t chew or swallow it! My partners cauliflower ‘steak’ was a pile of soggy florets. No ‘steak’, no roasting!Drinks were very slow to arrive too – and my coke was delivered with no ice or lemon, just rather flat, not cold & out of a gun.A waitress did ask unenthusiastically if everything was ok, however I think we’d all lost the will to live regarding the meal. Thankfully the company was great, and we all enjoyed a thoroughly good mutual moan about the expensive, rubbish lunch. I keep coming back to the Goudhurst Inn, sadly it never seems to improve. Won't be back again.

The room was lovely, stayed for 3 nights only downside was it stated daily housekeeping but they only came once & didn’t restock anything and even took are coffee cups away and left us with none. Restaurant menu is good if you like pizza but that’s about it

From the dog eared food splattered menus to the overdone pizzas and fish, this was a disappointing experience. Limited menu, several items not available. Can understand why there were so few people there as the food is now questionable but expensive. This restaurant used to be so good, beautifully decorated, helpful staff why is the food now poor and expensive. Buck up your ideas, please. A change of menu would also help, plus offer what is on the menu.

Monday 17th February. Booked for 8 people. Nice place. We live only a few miles away and food had been ok in the past. Food quality starters good. Mains Poor. Onion rings - onion was raw ! Steak was saturated in garlic, it was all my wife could taste and I had to physically remove it from my mouth when tasting it - was so strong. She was also not asked how she wanted her steak when ordering so when I asked the waitress her response was they all come medium rare. Oh I said well can she have it medium please !! Since when are all steaks medium rare ?!?!?! The main issue though was the service. We had to walk to the bar to return empty glasses and order more drinks. We also had to ask for the bill at the end. Our dirty plates sat in front of us for over an hour and still hadnt been cleared after we left. There are loads of local better places to eat and I wouldn’t recommend or return anytime soon.

Have been to the Goudhurst Inn quite a few times and always been OK. Went yesterday for my Birthday - only two other tables in the restaurant occupied. Service was terrible, very slow. Main course was fine but then two of us ordered the Eaton Mess - it was just cream with a bit of strawberry sauce - absolutely disgusting,. Neither of us could eat anymore after the first two mouthfuls ... both of us were unwell last night and all we could taste was cream ... Would not recommend the place and won't be going back sadly.

We visited at 5pm on Valentines day with our two children for a quick pizza and drink. The pizza's had been cooked earlier and reheated. They arrived at the table barely warm and did not taste good. I assume this was because they were fully booked for valentines day and were working on preparing for the evening service. Either way we spent £53 on pizza and drinks for 4 that would have tasted better if we'd bought it from co-op.

A nice lunch with a great selection of their Hush Heath wines. Food was nice but limited as to what could be adapted for a wheat allergie. Partridge was beautifully cooked but maybe a little too much garlic in the potato! Nice cheese board but no gluten free crackers or bread so ate with a knife and fork.

We arrived today for lunch. We had reserved a high chair. When we got there they told us it was broke. Which isn’t there fault. I noticed an unoccupied high chair and was told that was for another guest who hadn’t arrived yet. So I didn’t understand why they got it and we didn’t, as we were there first. In the end we left and won’t return.

We had a good cooked breakfast but were disappointed to receive a bill charging us for our teas and coffees, despite on the Goudhurst Inn website the advertisement shows unlimited tea and coffee as part of the £10 price. The menu we were given by the waitress also confirmed that hot drinks were included in the £10 price. When I challenged the charging of the hot drinks on top of the £10 per person, the staff member said that the deal with unlimited drinks had changed and the menu was out of date.... very poor to advertise something and then “change” the deal at payment.

The food here is really very nice, we prefer to sit in the bar area, the fire is lovely when lit. We did start to come regularly, but when we could only drink the wine from the vineyard, this is when it changed for us. The wine we are sure if very nice, but quite pricey; we should be able to have or would be good to have the choice of a Prosecco or white wine from elsewhere, so sadly we will not be coming back.

At least you know where you are with the Goudhurst Inn, better off going somewhere else. Have given them so many second chances and the service is still just awful, no body seems to give a damn about the customers. We just seem to get in the way.

The Goudhurst Inn is in a very rural location and the roads are not for the faint hearted, especially at night. However, despite this, when my partner and I stayed here after visiting Christmas at Bedgebury, it was a wonderful place to go home to. Clean and comfortable with a lovely bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities (including a nice variety of fruit/herbal tea). The room was warm (although a bit too warm for us to sleep) and turning the radiator off didn't really help, so not too sure what we did wrong. Breakfast was continental style and laid out in a small room with specific access for guests. Again, nice choice of teas not needing milk Milk, water for the kettle, butter and yoghurts are all kept in the fridge which is also in that room. We also had a bit of trouble with the door to the outside, but this could be just us! Drivers will be pleased to know that there is a decent sized car park, too.

Not great. Food order was mucked up, wrong pizza came. Food nothing special. On the small bites the fig and goats cheese had literally a single tiny bit of cheese, hardly worth it. Disappointed. A cold main dining room with no atmosphere either.

A lovely lunch today … tasty shepherds pie my partner had the lamb shank, which was beautifully cooked. I would highly recommend a visit to Waterside cafe, great food at a reasonable price, welcoming staff and all in a great setting overlooking beautiful lake! Will be back again!
