We had 3 friends over from Milan and booked a table for lunch. We had not eaten here for a few years but the experience was amazing. The menu choices were great and the food was delicious. Patricia, our waitress was very knowledgable and helpful and 5 stars to Stoyan and Tomas in the kitchen. You are all a credit to the restaurant. Having re discovered the restaurant again we will be returning soon and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to anyone seeking a good quality restaurant with such amazing value for money.

Terrible lunch. We sat down at 1.30pm but didn’t receive our main course till after 3pm, despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty. I had Chicken Normandy which was dried out and was like eating rubber. It was supposed to come with a small salad, but this turned out to be a few lettuce leaves which were mostly brown and should have been thrown in the bin. I pointed this out to the waitress. The meal was expensive but we wouldn’t have minded if it was good. Would not recommend and as people that eat out very regularly we would not eat there again. Very disappointing.

We decided to try the taste du vin menu which was excellent value, 5 courses with wine pairings for £55 per person and brilliant that this is offered all week, not just off peak times. The wines matched perfectly and the food was delicious. It would be good to offer more variety as most courses were bread based - perhaps a rice/grain/pasta option and more picky eaters might appreciate a choice of 2 dishes for each course (there were vegetarian and vegan options but not sure how this worked with the minimum 2 people dining). I really enjoyed my meal though. Service from the new staff member Patricia was especially good, she was chatty and informative without being overbearing and made sure everyone in her section was well looked after. Also whoever made the espresso martinis we had before the meal gets 5 stars from me. The restaurant was empty when we arrived due to some cancellations so we worried it might be too quiet and stuffy, but it filled up later in the evening without getting too loud.

A magical champagne evening, al fresco, arranged by Eryn and her team. The vegan menu was excellent, beginning with the tomato and basil tapenade galette and baked potato skin with Caesar salad canapes (paired with Champagne Lanson, Brut Pere et Fils NV, and ending with vegan cheese paired with Lanson Le Rose Champagne NV. The wine and food pairing throughout was excellent. Eryn and Alastair hosted the evening in a friendly, professional manner. Even the rain during the main course did not stop the 'joie de vivre' of the evening. The 1990 Lanson Brut (Vintage collection) was a sparkling way to end the evening. Looking forward to the next wine dinner - the bar has been set high.

Okay, a bit interesting as used to be a Director for the Group in 2005 ~ have seen four ownerships since then. I like the current .. a superb bar team Perfect Bloody Mary from scratch, a slightly strange maitre only saw another waiter on a Sunday lunch for 80 covers. The Argentine beef was stunning, given our waiter told me he was the Food & Beverage Manager he should have known it’s provenance ! Anyway he was off to join Handmade Hotels it does seem HdV is struggling he was eloquent, good luck Julia Hands. The lighting was very poor on the left hand side of the restaurant .. having to walk out to daylight to read the menu and the bit of green cardboard that was meant to be a painting truly shocking. The kitchen is still performing here ~ the bar manager on it. Its the management practicalities of lighting, room art and recruitment, which we know is a UK problem that is a problem.

We came here for our Wedding Anniversary Sunday Lunch as wanted to push the boat out. We did not stay in the hotel as are local and have dined here in the past though not for a few years. Appreciating that staff are now so hard to get it would be fair to cut them a little slack; but when the bar girl is more interested in her homework than serving customers it might be time for a little more training. The restaurant staff by comparison were much more attentive and the food here was good if a little colder than hoped for. The choice, or rather lack of it, of vegetables was very sad too. The lack of diners in the lounge did serve to illustrate the amount of competition Royal Tunbridge Wells has at the moment. Spending nearly £200 one might have hoped for some of the kind of experience we have enjoyed in the past. We indeed had an amazing Christmas Day here a few years ago. Times, it seems, have changed and sadly not for the better. If you are looking for a special occasion maybe look around, there is a lot of competition out there locally.

We opted for the full breakfast, which included a choice of hot dishes, a cold buffet, plus coffee or tea. We both had the poached eggs and avocado as a hot dish, which was beautifully presented and absolutely scrumptious. The cappuccinos were really good, too. Overall, though, it was the beautiful atmosphere of this historic hotel combined with the attentive, friendly service of the staff that made it a memorable experience.

Lunch with very old friends. A very satisfactory place to meet. The à la carte menu had some delights and some disappointing dishes, you had to choose wisely.. It wasn’t the cooking which was very satisfactory but little things .. The escargot tongs which can be awkward at the best of times were the most slippery I’ve ever encountered the shells wobbled about in its jaws making the the extraction of the meat frustrating. The main course had some surprises only 6 langoustine scampi were on offer yet the sole meunière would be sufficient for two ie one dish a mouthful the other a feast..The pommel frites were excellent as was the tomato salad .As for the sweet the raspberry and elderflower trifle was a strange concoction lacking the elderflower . It looked like a cake, a trifle should be in a glass dish. It was the last day of the Christmas menu and none of these dishes will be the same in the coming days.i regret the absence of table cloths but I suppose Bistro allows this to happen.these days. Inspite of these niggles I would come again and hope the Parking would be clear and simple.

Note to self........never rely on past experiences when revisiting a restaurant. We've been to the Hotel Du Vin restaurant (the Bistro) several times for both lunch and dinner and it's always been excellent but if we'd read the reviews we would have thought twice about it. Not sure what's happened recently but our last visit was extremely disappointing. Seven of us for Sunday lunch. We were slightly tucked away in a room adjacent to the main restaurant lacking any form of styling or decor, it's just 'a room' ....and quite a shabby dull boring room. We were not in the sight line of any of the staff so, you guessed it, we were largely ignored. Waiter eventually took drinks order, we asked him to explain the menu etc...'oh hasn't anyone done that? Menu explained, we ordered. Soup arrived and consumed we had to ask for the soup bowls to be cleared. Half were taken. We had to ask again for the rest to be taken but even then there was one bowl left on the table throughout the rest of the meal. The food was very average indeed. The best dish on the table was our 12 year old grandsons fish and chips. My omelette Arnold Bennett was very vinegary but edible. The 'steak' was a quarter of an inch thick and over cooked even though the waiter had asked how it was to be cooked, we asked for it to be pinkish. Vegetable selection very ordinary, a huge dish of roast potatoes, who were they for?We had to leave our table at least 3 times to ask for items to be cleared or indicate that we were ready for our next course but even then only half of the main course dishes were removed, we had to ask again for the other half to be taken. We were never asked if we wanted more drinks. One waitress acted like she would have rather been anywhere but at work that day. No engagement at all from waiting staff. I asked for the service charge to be deducted which it was .....but no query from the staff regarding why I wanted it taken off the bill, they are obviously used to it!!All in all it was a very underwhelming experience, I could have taken my £200 or so and gone to the Middle House in Mayfield and had a superb Sunday lunch in comfortable atmospheric surroundings, next time I will. Why do I always regret not going to the Middle House??Maybe HDV were using 'holiday' staff or maybe they were just short of staff, no excuse it should be far better, it should be like you would expect Hotel Du Vin to be, bloody good. Will we be going back? What do you think?

Our Christmas lunch was a lovely occasion which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the family. The hotel was busy and several areas had been set aside for dining but we could not fault the unobtrusive but very efficient service. Champagne on arrival, rooms beautifully decorated, a genuinely warm welcome and excellent food. The menu provided a decent choice for all categories. Between us we sampled almost everything. Every dish was of high quality, the portions were decent and a generous bowl of roasted heritage veg provided a lovely accompaniment. The lovely homemade sorbet was a welcome bonus. I would be more than happy to save up and repeat the experience next year. Many thanks.

The drinks were amazing but the food element especially the service I could have got better from the kebab van down the road! Oh dear what has happened to the Hotel du Vin ? A year or two ago I had a very delicious cream tea here with friends ! Yesterday we had another meet up only to be met by a surly Maitre'd who told us that we could not have tea in the lounge - although requested quite a while ago on booking - due to a wedding. No one telephoned to say that our request could not be honored ! We accepted the Bistro - noisy and not exactly what we had planned ! Tea arrived - the sandwiches were dry and the scones resembled buns ! There were four of us but had to ask for more jam as the selection was blackcurrant, strawberry and marmalade ! I know my cream teas and nowhere has marmalade ever been featured ! I asked for darjeeling tea and got Dozy Girl which is a herbal mix and on complaint was told there was only English Breakfast or Earl Grey ! It does not cost a King's ransom to have a cream tea at the Hotel du Vin but a selection of afternoon teas is not really an unreasonable request ! We had a good meet up but the cream tea was sadly lacking and the service definitely needs to up it's game to get back to where it was a year or two ago ! Sad but true !

Our meal was very mediocre at high prices. The onion soup broth although tasty had to much sliced onion within the broth that it felt like I was eating spaghetti. I then had lamb which was very chewy and hard to cut, but again it did have flavour. My wife had fish which was not gutted and cleaned properly and had blood running out of it from the centre of the fish when she tried to remove flesh from the bone. I think the chef and management should look at the ingredients that their suppliers are delivering to the bistro, because these in ingredients do not warrant such high prices, paid for, by the customers. Unfortunately it was a unhappy experience for my my wife birthday celebration meal.

We had a wonderful late lunch outside on the patio. Service was excellent and for £26.95 we had a superb 4 course meal which began with a carrot and coriander soup in a divine bowl and ciabatta bread. Then you help yourself to the variety of salads inside. Beautiful choices with lovely ingredients including a beetroot and asparagus. There were peeled and un-peeled prawns and crayfish. The most wonderful pate. Then the main! I had the roasted chicken! Beautiful. A leg, thigh and breast in the most delicious gravy. Perfect cauliflower cheese, broccoli and carrots with a home-made Yorkshire and roasted parsnips. Superb. The only negative was the potatoes. Not sure why but they were grey and tasteless. My friends eat roast pots but I don’t and they all said they were the only disappointment of the whole meal. The roast beef was also fab especially the gravy. Then to finish, a wonderful choice of desserts. I had chocolate mousse which was perfect. Not too rich or sweet but just lovely. My friends had creme brûlée, pavlova, and the sundae. All said they were superb. We had a bottle of Chappelle Chardonnay which was divine at £21 and two beers. The whole experience was just first class. I asked the gentleman behind the desk where we could sit for breakfast was very rudely asked if I was a guest at the hotel .. I was not I told him I was not ,, To which he even more rudely informed me the kitchen was closing and we could not ne seated...So they advertise on their website that the bistro is open to all. Is that only when it suits you. I would. to have bothered going if the website said breakfast until 10.30am but It clearly states 11am. I think they should change their times on their advertising and I will not be returning . Manners cost nothing

We have been here before and enjoyed it so we chose it as a venue for a special family birthday brunch. The food and staff in the restaurant were good, no complaints a part from finding a rubber band in one of the main courses. This was dealt with professionally, but it would have been better if it hadn’t been there in the first place of course. This didn’t spoil anything - we still had a good meal.

We had Sunday lunch there yesterday. We ordered Roast Beef for our main course and the meat was inedible. We changed to a rump steak and the quality of the steak was appalling too - fatty and disgusting. We just wanted to get out of there ASAP by then so said nothing. Our waiter lost interest in us but the other staff were apologetic. I was so disappointed as I had been looking forward to it for ages. It ruined my day.

We had dinner in the Bistro last night and it was very underwhelming. Sadly expectations were high following previous reviews, but the service and the quality of the food were not acceptable. Dinner for two took nearly 3 hours which as it was a birthday dinner wasn’t a major issue, but the food was very slow to come out of the kitchen. The food however was fairly tasteless with devilled chicken livers arriving very mashed up like cat food and the onion soup lacking depth of flavour. The mains of mussels and rib eye steak were very average, but a good portion size. The major insult was the dessert, I ordered the cafe gourmand with a selection of small desserts and a coffee. When the food arrived all desserts were all burnt with the macaroon very charred and rock hard. When I sent the food back I was informed that they all were like that and therefore I was allowed to have a thin slice of chocolate cake as a substitute. I question why it was allowed to leave the kitchen in the first place if they were all that bad. Lack of quality control from the kitchen was the hallmark of the meal. Disappointing as it was a special birthday dinner and we won’t be returning. Hotel du Vin a very disappointing experience. If you are looking for a quality meal for a special occasion I would head to the Ivy Tunbridge Wells (if you can get in!)

I visited here with my mum for her birthday. The food was average and the ‘country table’ it mentions on the website isn’t as grand as it makes out. I had the omelette which was nice but nothing special. My mum’s traditional breakfast looked fairly average too. For the money I didn’t think it was very good value. Think you are paying for a fancy name more than anything. The service was also manic and the menu was in front of us for only a few minutes before being taken away.

We used to love the bistro and often came for lunch. This time it was looking tired. Tables and chairs looked scruffy .Pictures on the walls were brown and gloomy.Service very average- waiters / managers dressed in mixed bag of clothing so we had no idea who anyone was.Thought £18 for a steak was expensive-also to charge extra for sauce and plate of beans ! Couldn’t believe my boring chocolate mousse came in a glass adorned with squirty cream! This is not the 70’s! And £6:50! Bill with one glass of house wine and no starter, one desert ,came to £64.41 for two ,with service already added. You really need to up your game-great places down the road for less(eg The Ivy) where the food is much more up to date and the decor too. Disappointed.Have the accountants got to it?

We went for Sunday lunch here recently. At first I thought their set menu sounded like a great deal, but in reality I don't think it is. You get soup to start followed by the 'market table' course, although some of the items that I read on the menu did not exist at the market table e.g. scotch eggs. I then ordered a minute steak to be medium cooked for main course, it turned up very well done but we had waited for quite a long time for it to come so I couldn't be bothered to complain. Puddings were nice. Just thought the whole experience was average to be honest, the ambiance included and it felt run down in the restaurant like it needed a bit of tlc.

Christmas team lunch, understaffed in bar and restaurant. I had to ask for veggie gravy (I have to check with my manager was the response) when it came it was an oxo cube dissolved in hot water. Not great for an "upmarket" establishment

I booked lunch for my Husband on a momentus birthday. We were looking forward to a great lunch. Firstly the round table which had a groove around it was absolutely disgusting. Very dirty. The water glasses had marks around them. The sort of marks you get with a dishwasher over time. Not what we were expecting at all. The food was okay. Nothing special though. One thing that did stand out was the excellent service. We most certainly not be returning.

Not bad - but not good either really - king prawns were soft and not fresh tasting/ textured - ordered the calves liver and asked for it pink - came up well done so tolerated it or all timings go out the window and your partner is finished and your ‘new’ plate hasn’t arrived - said tell the chef - the waitress came back 10 mins later and said the chef says illegal to do it pink - I said if you told me that at the beginning I wouldn’t have ordered it - duh - a carafe of white and one of red were pretty good - ordered two glasses of dessert wine - didn’t turn up so half an hour went by and I collared another waiter and moaned - not cheap and better places for food in TWells - not many better for ambience

Second time I have been invited to dine there with friends in last few weeks and both experiences were dreadful. Service has gone down hill a lot and the quality of food was also sub standard.. Real shame as a lovely place for years. Waiters rolling eyes, a dead fly in my dinner and had to keep asking for our drinks time and time again. such a shame but I dont be going back again..

Dined with 5 friends on Saturday night, to a very expensive meal, that was really poor. Do not order the chicken escalope cold have got a better kicker with fries at McDonald’ s for a fraction of the price. I think they must use the same supplier as them for the fries. The salad (stated on the menu) consisted of approx 4 beetroot leaves on the plate. This is a garnish not a salad. Three ordered the cod one was sent back due to under cooking. One lamb was very dry and thin, the cassoulet was ok. None came with veg so these had to be ordered separately. Do not go here if you enjoy good food and a decent portion. The price was not worthy of the produce we were presented with.

We booked for a small birthday lunch. The setting is excellent for a good meal. There is enough choice on the fixed price, and the price is reasonable, £18 for two courses, three pounds more for three courses. We had one of each for starters: pate, mushrooms and salmon. All were good, with the mushrooms looking best. For our main course two had mussels and one Toulouse sausage. There was masses of food. Nobody could finish the mussels or the accompanying chips. I'd prefer slightly less with the sauce reduced. We shared a cheese course between three. The wine was an acceptable Viognier. The whole thing came to just over a hundred quid. The cheese was probably the star of the show. At the end the service for coffee and the bill was a little slow.

After waiting 30 minutes at the table I went to find a waiter so we could order! Another 25 minutes and the food arrived! Was it worth the wait? Not really. The beef bourguignon was okay but came with no vegetables not even a potato! The seafood bouillabaisse again was okay but lacking content. The cheese and biscuits was average. Thank goodness we had bread left over form the main course! I had to go and find a waiter to ask for the bill and deducted service as we didn’t get any. They need to sort out the waiting staff as they wondered around without direction.

Lovely venue and good service. My wife’s onion soup and lamb tagine were excellent. My king prawn starter, whilst tasting good, hadn’t had the black (intestinal tract) lines removed which you would think a good restaurant would do as a matter of course. My steak and chips were very good. The side of tomato and onion salad was simply a chopped tomato in a bowl; no attempt to decorate. Drinks were a bit pricey but to be expected. All in all a good meal but not sure I would return.

This is a lovely location and is very elegant and stylish. However, the food... The meaty dishes were okay but as I was visiting with a vegetarian I phoned first to check availability of veggie options. I was assured that there was a wide choice but on arrival the menu said otherwise. The veggie partner opted for a cauliflower based dish but when this arrived it was disgusting and had obviouly been meddled with to remove non vegetarian cheese. The service is also shambolic and inattentive. Overall, for the money, a terrible disappointment.
