Disappointed. Been coming here many years, and it just keeps going downhill. This week, we had to wait over an hour for food. We were told this was due to only having one chef. However, they didn't tell us this when we ordered. We'd have gone elsewhere. Sadly the food wasn't great when it arrived.

Not sure this place knows what customer service is, unless you are sat at the bar or a local/friend. Even though we booked, we were given a table right in front of the busy bar and had to ask the other guests to leave our table so we could sit down. Were told multiple times that someone would visit our table to take an order. They never did. We ordered at the bar in the end. Our table was at 2pm, at 3pm we had to chase up our roasts. They said we were the next table but there was no apology. Thankfully the roast was good, albeit luke warm when it finally arrived. We had planned on having pudding but couldn't be bothered to wait. We left and will be unlikely to return unless the customer service improves.

Me and my partner had lunch here on a quiet Friday afternoon in January and couldn't recommend it highly enough. The roaring log fire and cozy atmosphere was a welcome juxtaposition to the dreary Winter backdrop outside. The food was absolutely impeccable, and the service from both Amba and Cienna was nothing short of amazing. Really friendly, chatty, and personable; they're both a credit to your business! Thanks for a great meal, we'd definitely return.

We visited twice during our stay. First was on a Friday evening - good service and food. Then we visited on Sunday evening for a roast. Very disappointed. Ran out of beef and no stuffing for the chicken roast. Roast potatoes were clearly frozen and tasteless. We left very disappointed and won't be back I am afraid.

We dropped in here with my outlaws primarily for late afternoon meal in first week of Jan, great location on quayside and my wife and I had been here before but summer and autumn time. The log burner was a welcome feel and sight as it was very cold outside and the interior is great inside contemporary. I drink craft beers and there was ample choice of draught ales and guest beers. Father in law had chicken something as was well happy with it and more than enough for him, his wife had fish and chips and was ok with them other than could have been hotter. The wife and I had steak pie which was average, the crust was extremely hard which disappointed. A young lad served us who was extremely polite and helpful. We shall go back....

Booked a table for 14:00 on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year. Arrived 15 mins early so grabbed a drink before taking our seats after the previous people had left. Ordered our food after 10 mins, all ok so far. Busy pub as it’s not very big, but the table was roomy enough. Sadly it took them till 15:00 to bring the food, then they said they could full fill the side order of onion rings, did I want an alternative, which I said no thanks. Three dishes should have onion rings as standard, but they were missing, we were not advised of this, so they became mash, peas and three very ordinary and cheap sausages. The other dishes were fine. When the bill came they knocked off the price of the 1/2 pint of lager, but still had the side dish of onion rings on it. Eventually they corrected that, but still no proper address of the three incomplete dishes (the cost of the drink wasn’t enough, but they wouldn’t change it). We paid and left, we won’t be returning either. The food situation is the main reason, but to have too few staff on and leaving those who were working in that position is not acceptable. Also another bug bear of mine is dogs being where you’re eating, I’m sorry but you’d not want them in the kitchen, so what’s the difference? I’m not talking about one or two dogs either, the place was like Battersea. Please don’t tell me to go where dogs aren’t as this is a pub that serves food for people, not dogs….get the priority right!

Service was great, very friendly staff even when busy. I had the steak pie and it was nice enough, but quite small for a pie. It didn't help that we received quite a small serving of chips, so the plate looked empty. I wouldn't order it again. Had the cookie dough dessert and it was 10/10.

Unfortunately The Golden Fleece seemed to be incredibly understaffed on our visit, not just in front of house, but at the bar, and in the kitchen too. On an incredibly busy Sunday, there was only one waitress working front of house, one person behind the bar (and there was a constant queue for the couple of hours we were there), plus a very long wait for food. Once we were seated, we had to wait 10-15 minutes just for a drink order to be taken, and then another 15 minutes for our food order (we were ready to order when drinks were taken, but the waitress quickly rushed off). Food wasn’t served until an hour after we’d first sat down. Had they said ‘I’m terribly sorry, we’re very understaffed and food may be a bit longer than our usual time’, I would have understood, but there was no mention of this at all. Similarly, it seemed quicker to just go and stand in the queue to get drinks at the bar rather than wait for service. The food was fine, nothing special - the roast potatoes seemed re-heated as they were rock solid. The ‘Butternut Squash’ Wellington we had ordered I was very confused by, as there was no butternut squash in sight! It seemed to be chickpea, lentil and perhaps spinach? It tasted fine, but it was not what was advertised on the menu. I felt incredibly sorry for the one member of staff serving tables, as they were polite but obviously very rushed off their feet and didn’t completely seem like they wanted to be there. We decided to go elsewhere for dessert, as I suspect we’d of had to wait another hour for the order to be taken. Sadly very disappointed with our experience.

Greeted by friendly staff and with a VERY warm log burner on the go, we sat down to enjoy a wonderful meal. Highlights being the steak and ale pie and the crumble and custard. Visiting Wells-next to sea and popped into the Golden Fleece for a drink on Tuesday. Food looked good so booked a meal for Thursday (tonight). Also Katey, behind bar Tuesday was so friendly it made booking Thursday easy. Tonight we arrived for our booked meal. There were two things off the menu but otherwise all good. I had the festive pie which was venison and pancetta with garlic mash, veg and a side of cauliflower cheese. Craig had steak and ale pie off the main menu which was equally good. Food was hot, tasted great and to make it even better, the service by Katey and Chelsea was fantastic. Niall the chef was very accommodating and clearly knows how to ensure his customers leave with a full and satisfied tummy! Highly recommend and that covers atmosphere, food, service and general vibe on a wet and cold December night. Thank you so much Niall, Katey and Chelsea.

3 years ago I gave the Pub 4/5 * Today it deserves 1/5 * It has no Character. All members seem to be under age. A menu that is out of date/ season. Specials were both fish, one being a fish curry (fish curry already on the menu)and the other local muscles ...Too many fish dishes!!! And the most annoying thing is the reference of the greeting 'Guys'. We are man & woman. I don't have a tail between my legs. I am woman. What is wrong with the greeting of "folks" "Sir" "Madam By the way the fish & chips were awful as was the tartar sauce.. So today 1 December 2024 we returned to the Golden Fleece knowing that it has new owners and that a bit of work has been done on the upper floor, which was in most need off. We booked our table for 3pm. Arrived about 10 mins early. No problem. We waited and had a drink. About 5 mins after 3 I asked if our table was ready. Reply from the young lady was " yeah it's over there table 6" 🙄 We sat down and about 5 mins later our order was taken , which was Steak Ale pie with Chips & peas and a Roast Beef dinner with cauliflower cheese. The pub wasn't that busy. However a couple of tables who had sat down before us was told that there was a bit of a delay due to them being busy. 😲 No one told us that. At 3.50 pm I asked how much longer before we get our food. " Oh yes I'll find out " she says. Eventually we were told 10 mins. Half an hour later, our plates arrived. 🤮 Chips were over done as well as the pie. The Roast Beef with the soggy Yorkshire pudding was awful. It was suppose to have come with all the seasonal veg of leeks white cabbge carrots and peas. Well no leeks carrots or cabbage. I cut into the so called Roast potatoes and it oozes out a lot of grease/ oil/fat. The beef was lukewarm. The veg also that being the peas and pickled red cabbage. I also ordered a side dish of cauliflower cheese. That was disgusting. Under cooked to the fact it was raw and the cheese well that was so enemic to say the least. I told them that I wasnt acceping that plate and to take it off my bill. It all should have been spot on especially after waiting all that time. I asked for the bill. They wanted me to pay the full amount. No way.I said. " Why " they asked. Really. 1 We have waited for 1hr and 20 mins for our meal with no-one letting us know that here was a delay. 2 Lack of vegetables again they didn't inform us about that 3 The soggy Yorkshire pudding. 4 it was luke warm if that. . I am happy to say that they did deduct the 2 meals from our bill. Unfortunately it doesn't want us to go back very soon. We have been visiting the Golden Fleece for many years as there has always a good vibe there pre covid. Unfortunately it's not the same anymore.

We stay in Wells every few months & have been here many times before - mainly because of how dog friendly it is. However today was the worst service we have ever had, which we’re hoping is a one off! We waited 45 mins to order food & had to call a waiter over to take our order. We asked him to read our order back , we had missed off one item, which we corrected him on. When our food eventually arrived, every single meal had something missing/wrong on it. One meal was even missing completely & didn’t arrive until we had pretty much finished the others. Sides were missing & sauces missing off other sides. Drinks took ages & they told us they couldn’t make certain drinks, despite them handing us those drinks as he was explaining that it couldn’t be made! w We then had to clarify what drinks we had & stuck to tap water after because they couldn’t cope with any other drink. The manager was around & kept making up excuses, but never actually apologising. Upon receiving the bill, it turns out they were trying to overcharge us, so we discussed these with the manager to get them taken off. Really disappointed & it’s completely tainted a pub that we normally were quite pleased with. Although the service was appalling, the food we did receive was delicious. A simple apology, or offer to take a side/dessert off our bill would have avoided our disappointment. Such a shame

We booked a table at The Golden Fleece during our recent holiday in Norfolk, and while the food was fantastic there were a lot of elements of the service which unfortunately were pretty poor. We entered through the back door as instructed by the signage, and then stood waiting at the ‘wait here to be seated sign’ for about 10 minutes while one member of staff repeatedly walked by us, stopped to open and drink a can of coke and rearrange some cushions on seats before we finally had to stop him to ask to be seated. At this, his response was ‘oh yes, you have been stood there for ages haven’t you’. We were seated and handed a single menu between the two of us, and later (after ordering) we realised there was a specials menu and pie offer which we were given no indication of and probably would have ordered from if we’d been told (we only realised this after hearing the specials read to other tables and then be handed a separate menu for the pie deal) Our order was taken and we waited quite a while for drinks, and while it was a fairly busy evening the staff member behind the bar seemed to spend more time chatting than pouring drinks (although she was very bubbly and good with customers). We saw many other tables seemingly waiting a long time for drinks, orders to be taken, bills to be received etc. The food itself came quickly and was really great, so definitely no disappointment there! All this could be excused as understaffing leading to long waiting times, and I really can’t hold that against the staff at all who were working very hard, however there were some other parts of the evening that were completely unprofessional and inappropriate. Firstly, someone seemingly ‘dined and dashed’, which is a horrible situation to be in for the staff, but they then stood and discussed this very loudly right in the middle of the restaurant for everyone to hear, including discussing the ins and outs of the cost of the unpaid bill having to come out of their tips! I really hope that isn’t the case as that seems wildly unfair, but also this is really not an appropriate conversation to have in front of customers. Secondly, I don’t know who decided it was appropriate to have the TV in the middle of the bar and restaurant showing 24 hours in A&E!!!! Luckily we’d finished eating before the episode started showing someone having a massive wound on their head behind sewn up, but it’s just a completely inappropriate thing to be showing while people are eating!

Great place. We ate there twice while on a visit to Wells. Kids really enjoyed it and we all get very welcomed.

Nice looking pub with good atmosphere. I bought a lasagne and garlic bread after a long day of bike riding, which was the perfect meal. Even though I was on my own, and probably looked slightly odd walking in with a helmet and fluorescent shirt, the staff treated me politely.

Awful, fisinterested service. Waited ages for drinks and then for food. My fishcake was small, dry and tasteless served with five, large boiled potatoes. No sauce, butter, flavourings or even salt and pepper. Just dry potatoes and a bit of uninspired salad. Couldn't eat it. Not helped by presence of three large, smelly dogs at nearby tables. Miserable experience. Couldnt

Large well located pub right on the front of Wells harbour with outdoor space around the back. We didn't eat here hence the score for the food but that came out looked ok. Don't think the place deserves all of the one star reviews here but equally not the full five as it's got a bit of work to do particularly on the staffing with waiting times at the bar significantly longer than average. There seemed to be just one person behind the bar which for a busy Friday was a bit lightweight. Overall I thought the beer was nice and well priced, and the place had great potential....it's just not yet being quite fulfilled.

Definitely the best pub I’ve been too! I’m from Nottingham, me and my brother come to this pub as our holiday local and the experience here is so much better than back home because the staff make you feel really welcome and they take the time to get to know there customers. Grant (landlord) and the team Amba: who has helped me find my new favourite beer, Ashleigh, Nikki, Emily and Niall who are also super friendly that helps drive this pub to success! A proper traditional pub with amazing food and fantastic staff. Can’t wait to come back next year for the same experience

Very dissappointing throughout. The waitresses seemed under stress and frankly embarrassed as when we tried to order roast beef dinner it was not available. They had also run out of Yorkshire, stuffing and potatoes. We ordered pie and chips which was a tiny portion and only half portion of chips which seemed like they had been cooked several times. The pie had a hair in it which my wife tried to inform waitress quietly but was not believed as we had eaten the meal as we were starving. When trying to complain the waitress took ages with many to and from to presumerably her manager. They took off value of one cola. We rarely leave any reviews but this experience was truly worthy of comment. WARNiNG please ask if they have all food offered available before ordering as they plainly lied to others sitting at adjacent tables.

Ashleigh the young waitress was an absolute delight despite being under pressure. She was extremely conscientious and attentive. The food was good although mine wasn’t as hot as I would have liked although the other meal was piping hot. Nice place lovely staff - thank you Ashleigh for your great welcome.

Called in here the other night after reading some good reviews. They were right! Lovely place which is family run. A warm welcome from the staff, and the food was amazing! Special mention for the mushroom pie as it was incredible. Vegetarian pies can be hit or miss and this one was certainly a hit! Chips and vegetables lovely too. Oh and the chocolate and peanut butter cheesecake was wow! Will be back and will probably stay over having seen the rooms and new lodges.
