The George Payne in Brighton and Hove

Just had an amazing Sunday roast and desert at the George Payne, big portions, quality ingredients, great tastes, served with a smile - thank you!

There is tasty classic food, burgers, and beer. The service is nice and very friendly. On Saturday, very tasty breakfasts are served from 10 a.m. It is pet-friendly. I will be coming back here.

I called ahead to ask if they could reserve Sunday roasts. They said they would inform chef.I got there a little later than my daughter who had already ordered a kiddie meal for her child. We did not get pre orded food and was told that only veg and pork was available. We then ordered veg. After a long wait we were told that they were not going to make our order....too busy. Diabolical customer service.

my friend and I ordered two identical Sunday chicken roasts, his dish was good, mine had two pieces of chicken, one tasted like old meat, the other frankly smelled like rotten meat and tasted the same; the atmosphere is nice, but the food was disappointing

Not really for me. Tables just packed in feeling really tight but midweek nobody there.

Came to the George Payne this Sunday for a proper roastie in the sun! The food was delicious, black pepper beef was amazing! Staff lovely as always

We saw online that it was buy one burger get one free deal on a Tuesday but when we got there. The bar lady said that the website and the online site was not updated. It was actually a £10 burger deal. We then looked at the menu we chose some food the the Barman was not bothered and not accommodating, particularly when the food arrived. The steak and Guinness pie was all pastry. The roasted vegetables will burn and my stroganoff was tasteless. We told the bar man again and he just laughed and said he’d tell the chef. the atmosphere was unfriendly pretentious and extremely expensive for what it was. George Payne’s always fine when you want to meet friends for a few drinks, but don’t expect anything else.

We pre booked for the Scotland vs Ireland game, service is super fast and big place for big groups we had 23 for our stag do group had a tab for £500 felt like it was bottomless. Great prices for drink.

Came here with a large group of friends for Sunday roast really disappointing. Yorkshire puddings were overcooked and burnt, I had lamb which was cooked like school dinners, chewy and unpalatable. Gravy was bisto and the veg wasn't cooked properly. Would not recommend the roast here. Staff were friendly and service was good, but all six of us agreed it was poor

The star of the show was the absolutely devious home made pie. My goodness. Absolutely just what we wanted it to be. Crispy shortcrust wrapped round a homemade pie. Cream my mash, fresh cake, roasted carrots and parsnips, the thickest delicous gravy and a dollop of French mustard. 10/10. Piping hot. Will be back for sure. £13.95 well spent. Thanks to chef Dave :)

Had the most fantastic Sunday roast which we booked last minute for Mother’s Day. Food was excellent quality and loads of it. Service was so friendly and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Highly recommend this pub for food, service and ambience. It’s a hidden treasure.

Our server was lovely, however there was no care taken in the kitchen for an allergy sufferer in our party. A meal on the menu that was labelled gluten free was ordered by our coeliac diner, and the waiter confirmed that this was gluten free. However when the order arrived and had been eaten, it was noted that an item on the plate was not gluten free. This was not communicated to anyone at any point, and therefore the coeliac member of our group ingested the gluten item. This is really poor and a dangerous mistake involving an allergy. The waiter was really nice and apologised profusely but it wasn't his mistake. Disappointing.

Paula was amazing!!!! Super fast service and super easy to talk to! She took our order so fast and made the drinks even faster. Made the GP experience worth it!!

Had a really nice roast here. The potatoes were not great, they were a bit dry and hard. but the rest of the roast was delicious. I had the 3 meat roast which was really good, but I did envy the pork that my friend got. The service is really nice and they are all so friendly! We took 3 toddlers and a dog, and they didn't butt an eye at the chaos we caused

Very friendly staff. Loads of atmosphere although music at lunchtime was a bit too loud for easy conversation. The Sunday roast was very disappointing. My wife had lamb, which consisted of two small slices and some shredded lamb plus the usual roast potatoes etc. The Yorkshire pud was very good. I had the BLC, which included a miniscule piece of chicken, a slice of beef and shredded lamb strangely with mint sauce already on it! We did not complain since we had already waited 45 minutes. A very disappointing experience. We might pop by again for a drink but not to eat.

Four of us went here for Sunday lunch (Well five,including my dog) It was quite busy,but we were expecting that being a cold Sunday afternoon. My wife found a table and I went to the bar to order our drinks…(The staff are very friendly and professional) There’s a nice selection of ales and beers on tap. We ordered our roast dinners with a few sides,cauliflower cheese,stuffing and pigs in blankets… It was almost 45 minutes before we got our food… The roast dinners were okay…really nothing to get excited about. They were just warm and I prefer my food piping hot… A shame really considering it was £18 for a roast… The staff looked quite flustered as it was busy,that’s the only reason I didn’t complain about my food. Plus it would probably be re-heated in the microwave. This pub is in poets corner and if I’m honest,I’d expect better food/quality.

Visited for a late Sunday Roast with the family. Loads of pink & melting beef, with lovely roast potatoes, huge yorkie, a mix of lovely buttery vegetables & best of all lashings of gravy. I was so hungry that no pictures were taken of the roasts sally. We just managed to fit in deserts from a really good selection listed. The pub was cosy & inviting, with all the staff being warm & friendly.

Was here on vacation. Great vibe. Our server Julia was awesome. Even during the Liverpool vs Arsenal game was willing to change a tv to accommodate my wishes to watch the final week of NFL and put on Red zone. Who would have thought I’d be watching American football in Barcelona.

Love it here, back Street pub high Street feel, good food, warm feeling, daily meal deals, ie fish and chip Friday 10 pounds, a generousl portion too. Decorated wonderfully on special occasions ie Halloween and Xmas, a lovely outdoor area too, kids love it, go and enjoy!

Came here recently and ordered a steak and chips. The steak was cooked as requested and the chips were really nice chunky ones. The staff were really friendly and helpful too. I would say the music was a little too loud for my liking but that's just personal taste. I will definitely be back to try the food again.

Pictures say it all.. had to send a meal back before that due to the steak being vile- no seasoning and tasted like it had been cooked on a dirty grill.

Casserole was ridiculously tasty and rich, with a little hint of spice in there. The blue cheese and bacon mash was insanely good too! And the veggies cooked to perfection. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Best roast dinner we have had in a very long while. Yum yum.

Been here a couple of nights now and had a great time with my mates, Ciara was especially great - highly recommend!!

Atmospheric friendly pub offering daily themed events. The four of us enjoyed great service tasty food, plus local ales I filly recommend it.

Lovely place to go to enjoy a drink and the staff were really welcoming and lovely But the food wasn't nice at all. I ordered ribs and they were tough and tasted like chemicals. I did ask for it to be changed and the manager didn't hesitate and sorted it for me and I change to have a burger but even the burger wasnt right so quite disappointed but I didnt want to complain again. Even my partners chicken burger wasnt nice

Lovely local Pub. I went there with a friend for Sunday Roast. Food came out really fast and it was really delicious of course. The interior has a rustic vibe. I loved the fresh wild greenery they had on wach table. Service was great. There is also some outdoor seating as well.

Visited for evening meal on Sunday. I had Roast Lamb, and others had the Roast Chicken and the Veggie Wellington. The food was tepid at best even though the plates were hot. The Veggie Wellington went back twice for heating up. For the price, the 3 slices of lamb and veggies I got was a bit on the small side, and one of them as per the picture was just fat and I counldn't eat it. I would not recommend coming here for the Sunday Roast. In the end had to go elsewhere eat more food!

I was lucky enough to win a free meal for two here earlier this year. I had never actually been to the pub before despite living fairly locally and hearing good things for ages. I was very happy with my experience and the meal I chose. We both ate fish and chips, and thought they were super tasty. We particularly enjoyed the curry sauce - something that can be surprisingly hard to find in restaurants and pubs. Would happily return here as a paying customer. My visit is overdue and I'm hoping to go back again very soon.

Very average food, especially for the price. Slow and disappointing service. Used to be a lot better when it had an Asian kitchen.

Great beers and foos, seems to have a new manager who's doing a great job

This is a really lovely pub. We come here quite often. Great beers, lovely atmosphere. Good music. 4/5 stars until this wkd. The food has always been fine. However, I think you can tell a lot about a place but how it deals with a complaint. I was with my family. I ordered the pickled cucumber salad. It was one of the most disappointing meals I have eaten in a long time and as a vegan I am often underwhelmed. There was ok mixed lettuce leaves. On top about 6 slices of slighting browning cucumber that had no hint of being picked, Some giant couscous smothered in a pomegranate dressing. Some nicely Pickled onion slices and large chunks of raw chilli. It looked unappealing. It tasted worse. Who can eat large chunks of raw chilli. I eat a lot of chilli and use raw chillis so I am not shy of the heat. But this was horrid. The dish was too sweet, too bland. I told the staff when they came to clear the plates. They basically said: Ok well thanks for letting us know. Why ask the customers how their food was if you are not going to do anything about it when they say it was bad. There were several things wrong with all the dishes (except the potato rosti which was absolutely delicious) so perhaps an off night in the kitchen, but shrugging it off is not the way to bring back regulars. Rather put off eating there again now.

We waited ages for our food, not all of which came and had to ask for the rest. A friend we were with didn’t get his food at all.

Had a great night in the George Payne all the staff lovely and great service food was very nice was served by maddy she was very and helpful would definitely recommend this place.

Went for a drink, so can't comment on the food. I liked the decor and layout with plenty of space. The staff were nice and there was a friendly atmosphere.

We had a Sunday Lunch here a while ago and it was not good. Yesterday was great, excellent friendly staff and great food. The cauliflower cheese was perfect as was the lunch. Maybe 5 stars, but i know Sunday is a family day and have no problem with noise levels, but the contstant children running around to do as they please, can be a little annoying. Great lunch though.

We were a family of 4 adults and 2 children for Sunday lunch. Booked on line for a table in a booth ( not knowing what that would be but thought it would contain the children a bit!) We were actually initially seated on 3 small round pub tables pushed together in the main bar next to the door to the garden area. It would have been ok but there was quite a breeze and the door was propped open. Outside were what I assume are the booths - I think 3 wooden huts/ cabins are all set up with one big table inside for a group. We were told we could have one of these if no reserved sign - so we did! Don’t know why we weren’t put there in the first place but…🤷🏻‍♀️ Once in there it was great. The children could play outside and be seen, we could all be on one big table and there was a wall heater if it got chilly - perfect! Staff were great - very attentive and really helpful. Note on Sundays it is just the Sunday lunch menu. We had both the meat and veg option between us. It was good but they had run out of pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese which were extras on the menu. My advice go earlier! We were booked for 5pm. Overall a great place for a family meal out.

4* purely for the beautiful roast dinners. This pub would of got a 5* review if it wasn’t for the poor customer service. On arrival we was left standing at bar not being greeted. Once seated took a while to be asked if we wanted drinks. No food check was done and no check on us for more drinks once our glasses were empty. No kids menu here was just advise they do kids roasts. When ordered bill the waitress forgot and we had to ask again. Minor fixable common sense tasks that could make this pub absolutely great!

Great place for a quiet pint, I was on my own waiting for my train, so I decided to grab a few while I waited, good atmosphere and friendly staff.

Great open mic every Thursday, friendly service and excellent Sunday roasts. Really friendly staff, decent food and a good selection of drinks. Recently refurbished with lovely huge rugs and a cosier atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Thank you George Payne for a great night out last night (Saturday 15th April 2023). Great food and great live music by Full Circle duo. My group of thirteen thoroughly enjoyed themselves and especially loved the food.

If you like food, DON'T dine here. Both adult and kids burgers were bone dry. Curry consisted of a watery, tasteless slop with boiled (not roasted) veg on the side. Stale poppadom and barely fried bhaji. We probably would have sent all the food back if we hadn't waited 45 minutes on a Wednesday evening. The limited chips and general pub vibes get a generous 1 star each.

Beer's alright, foods alright, and friendly enough but I can do without cobbling a bunch of round tables together when I need to seat more than two, which is your only option.

Staff are lovely but the roast was overpriced and really not very good. The pork belly had a soft top and had more fat than meat. When I complained I was told they'd tell the kitchen, no offer of a refund. I would have contacted the pub/brewery but there is no option to email on the websites.

Been to the George Payne several times for roasts and it never disappoints!! This is a family friendly & dog friendly pub with plenty of seating indoors and a great garden for drinking/dining outside on warmer days. The vegetarian wellington is fantastic (my personal favourite out of the various roasts I’ve enjoyed here) and they must be one of the only pubs in Hove where they don’t skimp on the gravy!! Worth 5 stars just for that to be honest ☺️ A great pub all round.

Visited on a rainy day and staff were nice enough to let us move inside! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful! Would recommend making a booking. Food was pretty average to be honest for the price but happy I went.

The restaurant is full of Chinese locals which is always a good sign. The menu is a combination of traditional Chinese dishes and Thai, which is interesting. We had a Sechzuan Chicken and Chicken Satay with special friend rice. We started with duck pancakes. The duck was a little dry, but accompanying vegetables fresh and crisp. Other dishes were tasty but heavy on the onion and capsicum. Service was blunt. Served us well for a last minute convenient meal across from our Ibis Hotel.

Absolutely brilliant pub an absolute must visit!
