We booked The George for a birthday brunch and highly recommend it. A lovely cosy village pub with friendly staff, good coffee and a great brunch menu with classics and less traditional options. We tried the smoked eel and will definitely be back for more!

Was recommended this place from friends who couldn’t fault it, and I have to agree; it was fabulous! A gorgeous pub/restaurant with a lovely big car park. Walking in we found a very friendly atmosphere and nice chatty staff. We ordered drinks and were sat at our table. The food came within a reasonable and comfortable time and was truly delicious! The roast beef was cooked to perfection, the roast potatoes were crispy on the outside and beautifully fluffy on the inside! The accompanying veggies were delicious, particularly the truffle parsnips and the cauliflower cheese!!! Delicious!!! We couldn’t resist sharing a dessert and it certainly didn’t disappoint, chocolate fondant with raspberry sorbet. Very reasonably priced. Great choice of drinks too. I’m looking forward to a return visit.

Excellent food at reasonable prices in beautiful surroundings. The food was delicous and well presented. We had the set price lunch menu which was reasonably priced. The Chapeldown sparkling rose was reasonably proced as well. A cut above normal pub food, more top restaurant quality. Friendly and professional service. Will definately be visiting again, and again......

recently reopened and it's looking ab fab . sadly we was seated in the restaurant when we said we was here for drinks !! we had a warm welcome and a long wait for drinks and it was very quiet .a friend turned up with a dog and obviously was told they can't sit in the restaurant so that had to leave but with our surprise the couple on the next table was aloud to bring there dog into the restaurant. the menu is appealing as we did take a look but there is no pub classics on there what so ever ie fish and chips , burger and chips . we also took the same rounds of drinks and was charge different prices .

This was the first time for many years that I have visited the George. I believe it has recently reopened with new owners after an extended closure. You would not know,it looks and feels as an old English village pub should. I was surprised how quite it was when we arrived but that was shortly after opening time and by the time we left there were a good number of customers in. The welcome was outstanding and the food service excellent. There are two menus a Main Menu which is very much 'GastroPub' offering and a 'Bar Menu' which is also served in their garden. We selected the boar sausage with bubble and squeak which was tasty and enough for a hearty lunch. We did choose deserts from the main menu both of which were very tasty. I will be going again.

This pub has been transformed! The large dining room now looks cosy and stylish. Still areas for relaxing and drinking. The food was gorgeous! A varied and unusual menu of totally home cooked food to a very high standard. Haddock chowder, shin pie, cheese course which came with mouthwatering marinated grapes. Just been taken over and they are doing a great job so give them a try.

Had to ask several times to get a bottle of wine, water arrived immediately but one gentleman had to go to bar to get his beer after long wait. Waitress could not answer any queries about the menu. None of Plant Menu was available unless we waited 20 mins for it to be defrosted. Eventually we all ordered duck which was really tough so returned it. Was offered something else but did not want to wait another 20 mins which we were told be so we paid for drink and left. Having googled Creedy Duck it will be tough if it is cooked on a high heat which presumably what happened even though the Chef said there was nothing wrong with it.

My husband treated me to lunch , our first visit to eat here since the pub reopened. The pub is very nicely presented and the staff friendly and welcoming. Our starters were excellent however my main course of baked hake did not meet my expectations, although the fish was cooked beautifully I was disappointed to find it contained 8 bones, yes I did count them, in what was a prepared fillet. Also one of the potato halves had a very obvious black area. I mentioned this very quietly to the waiter and asked him to mention this to the chef and that apart from this the meal was very good. The waiter came back and said the chef apologised but said this was to be expected with fresh ingredients. Well I’m sorry but I grew up in what was a very busy fishing port and have prepared and eaten all sorts of fresh fish all my life and I don’t expect to find bones in a prepared fillet of fish, also the bad area of potato was very obvious and shouldn’t have been served. I felt the implication was that I didn’t appreciate or understand fresh ingredients, yes mistakes can happen in a busy kitchen and a simple acknowledgement of the issue would have been fine and I would have left feeling happy instead of disappointed.

Visited midweek to try out the menu. The George has recently been taken on by the ex-owners of The Square Peg, which had excellent reviews. There is a choice between the bar menu - which offers a variety of small plates, ham & squeak, sausages and mash or fish and chips - and the a la carte. I went with the a la carte, which had a good choice of food. To start, the chicken liver parfait, which was smooth and melted in the mouth - a perfect sized portion with the accompanying sourdough. For main, I had the hake with fennel, tender stem broccoli & Tenterden potatoes. This was a decent sized portion of food, fish cooked to perfection and accompanying vegetables just right. All really tasty. I passed on dessert - partly because I’m not a big dessert eater (although did see cheese is an option) and partly because I didn’t *need* to eat any more - which always makes me happy with as I like to feel that I’m a glutton by eating dessert rather than needing to eat dessert to compensate for portion size. In terms of cost, small plates are £7 each, bar mains £14 - £18, A la carte starters £10 (mushroom pate) to £17 (scallops), mains £19 (beef shin rump pie) to £28 (aged rump cap) and extra sides £6 (I didn’t need to order this). Puddings were, I think, £9 each. Personally, I thought the cost was fine for the excellent standard of food. There is evidence that the new owners are planning some social events in addition to doing food, with a pub quiz planned for early September. If you just want a drink, there is a good range of wine and beer. Staff members were welcoming and accommodating. No complaints and very impressed so far - 5 stars.

The George is a great pub it has changed landlords so many times just recently, It seems they always get the formula wrong, another posh nosh pub, small portions high prices. Extortionate drink prices, thanks to the greed of Shepherd Neme £6.20 for a Guinness is a joke, I would normally have 3 pints over the evening had just the one!! So a loss of revenue straightaway. Service was slow and had to ask for dessert menu, but at £9.00 for a lemon posset we didn’t bother. It’s still a, Village PH but with high end prices locals will use it just the once like us. Bit disappointed.

Food took a very long time to come out (an hour after our bread / mezze plates were cleared) but was tasty when it arrived. One plain hamburger came out with cheese on so it had to go back. Burger and chips portions were large in a good way. Risotto portions were a bit meagre. Beware the “optional” 12.5% service charge automatically added to the bill. On the plus side, the bill was itemised properly and there were no accidental additions as so often happens. Overall a lovely pub but service needs to improve to encourage locals to return.

We ordered a mixture of everything on the Christmas lunch menu, and there were mmmm's all round ! My salmon was lovely. The George Inn is an absolute gem! The venue itself is simply gorgeous, exuding charm and elegance. What truly elevated our experience, however, was the impeccable staff – perfect in every sense and radiating genuine friendliness. But the crowning jewel was undoubtedly the food. Went here after hearing it had recently been taken over by people who run another pub nearby which is always excellent. The pub itself is beautiful, fabulous beer garden and plenty of parking. We were however very disappointed with the food. I had the cod wellington which itself was tasty but the creamed potato was very cold, I’d also got the rosemary chips which seemed to have missed the rosemary. My daughter wanted plain steak and chips. She was very clear. It came out with all the trimmings on, so she sent back. Again it came out with garlic confit on the steak, she had to scrape it off as was embarrassing to return again, and we had finished our dinners by then. My main with fries was £29, and her 8oz ribeye steak at £28, so not cheap. My husband had a burger which was fine. Feel this place would be so much better sticking to traditional pub food, rather than trying to be a gastronomic pub, something it’s not living up to.

The George has always been a stunning pub, and now it has the food to match. We had a big dinner party here and everyone was delighted with their meals: steak tender and perfectly cooked, goats cheese roulade insanely tasty, crevettes fresh and delicious and the creamed cabbage side was something else. The staff at The George are charming and eager to please. I thoroughly recommend a visit. It is a wonderful local pub, with a first-class restaurant.

After a long day of walking on our Pilgrimage, our original pub decided to cancel last minute on a pre booked arrangement. We came upon the George Inn and explained our predicament. Although their kitchen was closed the Manager Clare said she would see what her and her staff could rustle up for us. There was 40 or more of us so not a small task! Well the food was plentiful & delicious! The pub itself was clean and had a lovely country feel! The staff were all so lovely and accommodating. We've been to The George Newnham a few times & its always been excellent. However, they really surpassed my expectations this time around. We paid just £15 for a delicious home cooked curry & it included an alcoholic drink. The service was spot on, we'd been greeted well & served by two waitresses who remained attentive throughout our visit. The ambience was so cosy & relaxing, the roaring log fire, candle & traditional charm helping to create just the atmosphere you'd expect. Bring on the next curry night! We headed to The George on the last Friday in July, the sun was beaming so we were delighted to be shown one of their gorgeous garden tables (which also has the overhead screening to prevent us being roasted!). We got to take in the lovely atmosphere, every table socially distanced, but filled with customers having a fabulous time. The service, as always, was faultless. The food, as always, was delicious! One of our teenage daughters was delighted to discover a ploughman’s! The scotch egg was the best she’s ever had! Daddy agreed! He also enjoyed his ploughman’s. I’ve read some negativity about these but cannot understand it! Hubby and teenager loved theirs, were absolutely stuffed and plan to have it on their next lunchtime visit! I had the BLT with the bacon cooked nice and crispy as per my individual request (when asked how do you like your bacon), my elder daughter had home made fish finger fillets in a baguette which was super tasty, huge and beat her! My youngest had her favourite- kids meal of home made chicken nuggets and chips and didn’t leave a single scrap. We can’t wait for our next visit! It’s our favourite pub for so many reasons! Thank you! See you soon!

It's everything - the whole place is oozing with atmosphere, indoors and out. I can't think of a time of year that I wouldn't want to visit The George at Newnham - cosy by the fire in winter enjoying the pub quizzes or listening to acoustic guitar music in the garden as we did last night for dinner. We didn't know there would be music - owner, Claire, told us when we booked and it sounded perfect for a summer evening. No extra charge for the entertainment, they just decided it would be nice for everyone. We had a lovely meal and were chatted to and checked on when the sun came in quite hot - asked if we'd like any shade and given testers of ale to see which we'd prefer. Such attentive waitresses and waiters.A couple of reviews mention the price but it's important to remember you're not just getting dinner - this is a whole, lovely, relaxed evening. The new owners, Claire and Dave, have been the best we've seen at this pub and have turned it into the heart of the village. You must visit, even if you're not a local - you'll be welcomed like one regardless.

I went to The George Inn with a friend post lock down and it was our first lunch out so we were both excited having not eaten out since the beginning of March. There was social distancing in place and we had a lovely seat in the garden. We both ordered a Ploughmans and we were both disappointed with it. It was the smallest Plougmans I have ever seen (I'm not a big eater). The bread was a white part baked baguette but where you would expect the whole baguette (it wasn't large) we only got half each (it was also advertised as rustic bread!) The chutney that was described was like Branston pickle, there was a small wedge of cheddar and a small slice of ham which looked like it came out of a packet rather than the thick sliced variety you normally get in a Ploughman's.There was a small side salad, pickled onion and 2 gherkins. The saving grace was half a homemade scotch egg which was very tasty. There was no apple which you normally get and the cost was £13 ! Luckily we were taking advantage of the 'Help out to eat out' scheme otherwise it would've been more than disappointing. We were then looking forward to having a dessert but to charge £8.95 for it was a bit too much for us. I've not seen prices like that for a crumble outside of London! It was a real shame, we appreciate that the food industry has been hit hard due to lock down but to charge such prices isn't great for the long term.

Although it does take a minute or two to journey to this lovely country pub in Newnham , the hospitality and the food & drinks are well worth it! On this occasion I was drinking so I missed out on my favorite lager/ beers but the 0% lager and diet lemonade made up for my loss. Our starters were Mussels in a cream and wine sauce (with bread),and Whitebait, whilst both ours mains were Game suit pudding (which was crammed full to the brim.)

We visited this evening for the very popular steak night and had the tomahawk sharing steak. Quite simply, the best steak I have ever eaten! And I’ve eaten a lot of steaks! Cooked to perfection and full of flavour. Cannot rate highly enough! The syrup sponge pudding was an amazing follow on. Well done The George and thankyou

8 of us had a wonderful meal at The George last night to celebrate 3 birthdays. We ate at a beautifully decorated table in a small area at the front of the pub which felt like a private area. Everyone commented on how good their meals were and my husband and I can vouch for the superb steaks! The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. All of which contributed to a lovely evening, thank you!

We reserved a table for the Friday 'Fish & Chip ' special £5.00 We went along with two friends that had eaten there twice recently. The bar staff were friendly, the food was okay and all went well until we got the bill. They had charged full rate for the 4 x fish and chip meals. We questioned this and was told that the offer ended some time ago. Its strange that we enquired about the offer both before we reserved the table and with the waitress that served us. Both said that it was still on. We were saddened by the fact that we did not only attend for the 'special' by in addition had several drinks each plus starter and pudding. We feel a little compromise was in order but none was offered. Such a shame really. As you would expect we will not go back again.

The beer garden is perfect on a summers day. There is a play area for the children. Food was nice and decor inside the bar/ restraunt area made it feel cosy.

Freshly prepared seasonal food. The seabass and Filet Steak were excellent. Starters try the black pudding scotch egg. Nice desserts worth having even if full from dinner. The pies and suet puds change daily and are sensational

Had dinner here whilst staying at Hempstead house(see separate review) It's a lovely old pub/log fire /lovely gentle background music(Bobby vinton/everly brothers /dionne Warwick you get tge picture) We started, with warm bread olives and dip The bread was fresh from oven and olives proper ones (kalamarta probably) partner had squid and, whitebait. I had the mussels in ale both very nice. Main course was stuffed chix breast and lamb and mint suet pudding with mash and veg. All cooked perfectly and the accompanying gravy was properly reduced and flavoured no bisto here!! Finished with spotted dick and custard. The waitress was extremely friendly and competent I thoroughly recommend here for a high quality reasonably priced dinner in lovely surroundings. And will be back for sure

My husband and I visited The George Inn with my in-laws this weekend, wow what a gorgeous pub! The pub has a lot of the original features and has a really cosy homely feel to it. It has been decorated beautifully with lots of vintage accessories which I loved! There is a huge garden to the rear which overlooks fields with sheep in, we can’t wait to come back in the summer to sit in the garden!

Had a amazing birthday treat today at the new George inn. An Alice themed cream tea. The spread was beautiful with stunning attention to detail. All the cakes and sandwiches were simply delicious and enjoyed by everyone, including my one year old niece who was also catered for with a high chair at the table and a children's knife and fork. Staff always friendly and attentive.

This pub and restaurant has had a well needed boost since the new owners have taken over. The food is beautiful and the effort made is obvious. We even had Christmas dinner here, a first for us, and it was slick service and delicious food. The new breakfast addition is fantastic and all meals at any time of the day do not disappoint. Thank you for fabulous well cooked food and a lovely setting.

This afternoon we had a lovely afternoon tea at The George. We had some tricky dietary requirements but the staff were incredibly accommodating. (We had contacted the pub beforehand to discuss our requests.) The service was friendly; we were very well looked after and feel that the afternoon tea was excellent value for money. We would all thoroughly recommend The George for afternoon tea.

Three of us decided to try the George for dinner after hearing that it had been refurbished and had new tenants. We all ordered different dishes: swordfish with chillis and pepper with crushed new pots and green beans which when arrived was swordfish with hardly any chilli, asparagus and sautee potatoes - ok but not what was on the menu. Very average, bought in steak and kidney pudding with a thinish bisto granule gravy and tasteless red cabbage and the worst of all a steak that was supposed to be cooked medium but which turned up grey and dry and looked as if had been vac packed from Iceland, Deep fried, greasy mushrooms and very undercooked chips. The plus side was a very pleasant waitress and the pub looked lovely. However, definitely wouldn't go again unless the food improves dramatically.
