The first time not reading reviews and I end up in a place that was dirty, full of cobwebs and smelling of damp. The place looked like it hadn't had a good clean in months. there were used cigarette butts in the tray with the cups? bowls. Used shower get probably from the previous occupants in the shower tray. And a snail crawling up the window. They advertised wifi but there was none and very difficult to get any reception. There was no restaurant and breakfast was a few boxes of cereal on a tray in the room, loose teabags, 2 yogurts in the fridge and not enough milk to last 2 of us for two days. Also a toaster but no bread.

We stopped for lunch as we were passing and this was on the main road and our first choice pub had stopped serving food. The girl serving was very helpful and friendly but sadly the interior was very dated and unappealing. I wish I had left after seeing some dead bugs on the windowsill which clearly hadn’t been cleaned that day. We had the burger and sausage and mash. The burger was very overcooked and had no sauce, cheese or salad inside the cheap supermarket bun so was very dry and bland. The menu said ‘butchers sausages’ but they looked and tasted more like some cheap horrible mass catering sausage. Not impressed and the worst meal out I’ve had in a long time.

Please don't be put off by the decor. The food is excellent and the menu has a good choice. We were served by friendly and efficient staff. The type of English pub that you could spend all day relaxing and chatting to the staff and locals. If you were on your own you would not be lonely.

As soon as you walk in you are met with a very friendly welcome from the staff. It’s a very dated looking with it’s decor, but don’t let that put you off. We had such lovely friendly service and there was a great menu choice as well as the specials board. I had lamb shanks with mash and greens and it was delicious. I completely cleared my plate and it was a huge portion. It was great value for money. I’d definitely recommend the George for a great bite to eat.

Arriving around lunchtime on a Saturday, the girl behind the bar couldn't have been more friendly. She had a lovely smile and gave us a warm welcome so we instantly felt comfortable. The menu was typical pub grub and I was looking forward to a nice pie but unfortunately they'd run out so I chose fish and chips instead. This was a mistake as the chips were tough and both the fish and the batter were tasteless. So go for the atmosphere but perhaps eat somewhere else!

Though quite local this was our first visit. The George serves a good pub grub menu with vegetarian options. Hubby had a mixed grill which came with an egg...always a sign of a good mixed grill in his opinion and I had scampi, a bit smaller, but neither of us had room for dessert! We were very surprised that we were the only food customers on a Saturday night. We'll definitely visit again.

This is a classic English pub and the owners are some of the friendliest I have met. They serve good food and good drinks in welcoming and inviting surroundings. In addition, they have a large beer garden, they serve good restaurant standard food and they have very reasonably priced rooms- which unfortunately are not wheelchair accessible as they are up a flight of stairs. This is a great place to stay and a good base for exploring this very beautiful part of England.

After Googling for some where local to eat we discovered this lovely little friendly pub. As it was Sunday the husband opted for the Sunday roast, as I'm a veggie there was nothing to go with just the veg and potatoes for me so I opted for the veggie burger and chips. Upon ordering the food the barman mentioned that he could put my veggie burger together with the rest of the Sunday roast option. Oh my word it was very filling. Next came the choice of the desert, the husband opted for the sticky toffee pudding with custard. We are now both in food coma's.

My husband booked this as a last minute room as we had planned a long weekend in Bath and had decided to drive up in the evening when it was cooler. We phoned to see what time food service stopped and was concerned when the man didn't know we had a room booked. Eventually found us and told us to knock when we got there. We stopped for food before arriving as food service stops at 8.30pm. We were met by Graham, a very friendly fella who welcomed us and showed us to our room. We had the large family room (for 2 of us) It was clean and tidy and plenty of room. The bathroom had a few cobwebs and eight legged friends but it is in the middle of the countryside so to be expected!! Graham told us to go to the pub 500yards up the road if we wanted a drink, which we did and the cider was lovely! There was a single bed and a double bed in the room and it was lovely and quiet throughout the night. In the morning we went for breakfast, we were told there was no rush to leave and to come around 10am. We knocked on the door and waited for an answer. After waiting 10 minutes we decided to walk around the back to see if there was anyone there. We were welcomed in by the chef who had no idea we were there. The breakfast was brilliant and the coffee was in a decent sized mug. Would we stay again? yes we would, its basic - bed, bog and a shower.... my three main needs and breakfast was spot on!

We called here for an evening meal whilst on holiday. What a good choice. The food was freshly cooked and they readily provided a gluten free meal and were very knowledgeable about the ingredients. Everything was cooked fresh and was very tasty. The landlord and waitress were both very friendly and helpful. Added to this the prices were very reasonable compared to a lot of places around this area. We did not stay at the hotel as we were camping nearby.

Graham, the proprietor, can't do enough to help! I booked a Christmas meal for 15 and was given free sole use of the skittles alley for after the meal. Despite our numbers, our party sat at one table [which made conversation flow better] and there was even a cracker per person, which meant the conversation got off to a rapid start. Not only was there the option of 2 or 3 courses, but graham said we could have starter and main and see how we felt about dessert afterwards! And at £12.95 for 2 and £15.95 for 3 courses - including coffee & mints, you can't go wrong. Everything was cooked well and although I had to ask for my parsnips, and one person noticed at the end that she had had no potatoes, this must mean that she had a plate full without them! The filter coffee was reportedly not very good, but to be able to have cappuccino as an option is amazing! The service was quick, and also all meals served were served with only minor gaps, so no-one had to let theirs cool, waiting for others to be served.

Menú de comida más tranquilizador corta unos especiales. Obviamente todos de una fuente de alimentación estándar, pero bien para congelador pub todo eso. The George Inn at Gurney Slade, has gone through a transformation since the new manager, Graham Fuzzey took over earlier this year. Together with my wife and friends, we all enjoyed a lovely meal on Tuesday 1st September. The menu is a little limited but generally the food on offer caters for all tastes and includes vegetarian options. The meals were cooked perfectly, the portions were generous and the atmosphere was friendly. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience.

we arrived about 8 PM, today 27th of August 2015.There are a distinctly limited numbers of beers on tap. There are four local ciders on offer including my favourite Old Rosie. This is on the main road and parking is good. We decided to have a meal. The soup of the day, leek and potato, arrived bubbling which was a sure sign that it had been microwaved.I had fish and chips for the standard price. The chips were edible but nothing to write home about.I wondered why there were so few people as it is a Thursday night and you would expect buildup towards the weekend. One other couple was eating and three or four people came in for a drink. The atmosphere is good and the garden is very pleasant if you hit the pub on a day which is not raining and warm enough to set out.The service was friendly and the manager, Graham Fuzzey, made all the right noises and looked after us but there's not an awful lot you can do about lack of footfall. There is a pub on a side road adjacent which I think is the one for locals, this is more for passing people. I hope I don't do this place and injustice but having said that we would return. The web site is georgegurney dot co dot uk

We were given a warm welcome and settled down with our drinks to study the menu which was fairly small but with enough choice to suit most tastes (including vegetarians and gluten free). The owners and staff of The George Inn really went above and beyond my expectations during my little getaway to Somerset. Despite the fact my girlfriend and I were getting away from our normal busy lives for a relaxing change of pace, I still desperately wanted to watch the football. Our little holiday rental did have a TV, but a very small one, and I was hoping to watch it on a bigger screen. We called up The George and asked if they were showing the football. They said that they would put it on if I wanted them to, and even said they would move one of the bookings they had to a different section of the pub so we would be more comfortable! When we arrived I was a little concerned as the pub was teeming with folks who were obviously locals, and I was worried we would be treated poorly as we were "outsiders". I needn't have worried as the staff and the locals were very helpful and gave us a warm welcome - one of the locals even recommended the local cider, which was delicious.Speaking of delicious - The George Inn is a dying breed - a pub/restaurant that uses all locally sourced, fresh ingredients, some that were even grown by them in the garden. The food was delicious, we could definitely taste the difference home grown produce made. With the tasty food and friendly staff we will definitely re-visit if we find ourselves in Somerset again.

With local real ales, such as Gem and Butcombe, the George also offers a range of local ciders and a very friendly welcome. We went out for a meal to this pub and was really disappointed. When we first saw the menu we thought quite a good choice. The starters of mushrooms, with no frills! were just sat on some roughly chopped iceberg lettuce. The prawn cocktail was just basic, again with just lettuce and bread and butter. The soup was in fact quite good and tasty, but came with small roll which came out hard as in oven for too long. The 2 gammons were good, except for the potatoes which were not done and had to be sent back.Offered roast ones. Two of us had lasagna's which my sister ate, but I sent mine back as tasteless with no cheese and had slime in it, and was just slopped on the plate. These were not homemade! I was offered a free pudding which was good. This pub food definitely have no frills! Basic. The people who ran the pub were nice and friendly. We would not go back until the food improves with some good homemade food!
