The George Hotel in Mendip

After a nice walk around the town we found this gem of a place. , went in and found a nice table , firstly we ordered some drinks at the bar all served by a nice friendly guy , and the coffee was brought to the table , then some sandwiches were ordered and we all have to say they were excellent , almost a full meal.the staff were very polite and helpful the knowledge was excellent, we spent some time there as it was so comfortable, well done really lovely

The food was excellent, and the staff were all so friendly. We enjoyed our stay, after a few small niggles that were resolved quickly.

A very big thanks to all staff working 24/10/23 to 25/10/23, who accommodated us so professionally and kindly during our overnight stay. I came down with my brother and sister for an overnight stay prior to attending the service to honour a long-standing friend (of 67 years) who moved on at the end of September. We booked a family room which was spacious, spotlessly clean, well-appointed and quiet with very comfortable beds and a good en suite- teas, coffees, water and instructions/guidance for stay were all in evidence. Clear guidance and acceptance was given on enquiry for my brother's Jack Russell who travelled with him. When my sister and I arrived, later than planned due to train cancellations, as we entered someone jumped up from one of the tables, an old acquaintance from school not seen for 50+ years, plus the sister of our friend, and their husbands. Needless to say intense chat and catching up ensued non-stop until the person on the bar gently reminded us that they were closing- this kind, competent and easy-going atmosphere was in evidence throughout our stay. After a good night we were greeted with massive breakfast possibilities in the morning, serving ourselves with a multiplicity of things from the bar and being brought our stonking cooked orders and teas/coffees by the two lovely ladies on duty..Needless to say there was still plenty of talking to be had among our group, and amidst that we were all impressed and grateful with our breakfasts and the service, but I noticed both staff deal kindly, professionally and extremely courteously with a couple of less-easy-to-please guests. Check in and check out were seamless and the easy going warmth was a most welcome and lovely context for the nature of our visit. Very many thanks again to all concerned for all your hard work and creating such a warm hospitable atmosphere.

Gorgeous hotel, with great rooms, great bar and lovely food and the wonderful Wayne. Perfect stop over in Frome, highly recommended.

Me and a friend regularly visit here for lunch (at the very least once a fortnight). Staff are always lovely especially the lunchtime ladies Andrea and Vicky. They are always so cheerful and they really add to the up beat atmosphere. Food is always delicious.. over the years we’ve worked through every item on the menu I’m sure. We’ve tried other places in town but nowhere compares to The George. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a drink or bite to eat when in Frome.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of September. We found the rooms to be clean and tidy with complimentary tea / coffee / biscuits and a selection of shower gel etc. The staff were friendly and helpful as we had to order an early breakfast as we had an early start on one of the mornings. We had a normal breakfast on our other morning and the selections made we all very nice and came out hot, there was plenty of tea and coffee and there was also cereal, pastries and fruit to choose from. The only complaint we had is our rooms were at the front of the hotel and there was a lot of noise from the street through the night which meant we had very broken sleep. We would definitely stay again but would ask for a room at the back. Also the parking was great and very secure.

From the moment we stepped through the front door, the staff couldn't have been more helpful!! Wayne, the deputy manager was running the bar, booking in guests and fetching food from the kitchen...all with a smile on his face 😊. The room we had contained a four poster bed and came with a balcony for sitting outdoors and taking in the sights. The room, whilst compact, was clean, tidy and had an en suite bathroom with a proper bath...which I love!! At breakfast, again the staff were very friendly, chatty and helpful. Nothing seemed to be a bother for them. All in all, I can't rate the place highly enough, and my partner and both agree, it was an 11 out of 10 experience 😊

Bit of a shame that you cannot get chips here if you have shellfish allergy as cooked in same fryer as shellfish. Staff need more training as staff needed to check twice with kitchen. When food arrived it was ok but steak not to order.

Although the room did have a slight smell of stale cigarettes, the stay was very pleasant. Room came equipped with everything you’d expect: fresh towels, toiletries etc. Room was small but adequate for one night’s stay. The remote control had enough batteries! You wouldn’t believe how many hotels I’ve stayed in where the remote does not work. All gods

Parking is down a back ally in a underground area - small but secure, with a short walk back around to the front door. Booking in was easy and with a warm welcome - it is an old building with lots of levels in an up and down set up to get to the rooms (no lift). Our room was facing another building a few feet away but not overlooked as such, a standard room which was more than comfortable and clean. The bar is large but welcoming with friendly staff and localls we had a meal in the bar on our first night which was of a good 'Pub Grub' standard hot well cooked and tasty and value for money. Stayed for three nights at The George Hotel for my husbands birthday. We booked the four poster room and where not disappointed.Immaculate room with luxury bedding. Super hospitality tray with more than everything you would need including a cafetière and teapot, which was replenished daily.Every day our room was cleaned to an immaculate standard with fresh towels every day.Breakfast was lovely on the first two mornings, however unfortunately Sunday morning was a total disaster. Due to short staffing levels and a combination of things we waited an hour and a half and gave up without breakfast.However , the staff were incredibly apologetic and even made my husband a bacon sandwich to take away.We didn’t eat in the pub restaurant but it was very busy all weekend so can assume the food is good.Bar very busy with a lot of locals and it was quite difficult to find a seat, but cannot fault bar staff or service as all the staff were so friendly. If I could find fault it would be the bar / restaurant could do with a bit of TLC as looking tired and worn in places.Carpark is a challenge to get into as very tight and small, and round the back of the hotel but we had a space all weekend, so cannot complain!If we visit Frome again we would happily stay at The George as it also has a central location in the town, so very convenient.

Nice old building with good sized rooms and en suite. The service from all the staff was very welcoming and friendly. The rooms were very clean and good facilities. Cafetière and biscuits nice touch. Breakfast was ok not brilliant but adequate. The only negative I would say is this is an old quirky building with lots of stairs so not really suitable for people with mobility problems.I would definitely stay here again.

Booked a table by email, as suggested on their menu, for a Christmas reunion stating date, time and number of people. They replied asking which menu, which I took as confirmation and I said the Christmas one. They made no further communication, so I assumed we'd order one the day. When we arrived, they denied we had a booking. One member of staff was rude and said it was my fault. He was the person who had emailed me, who, it transpired should have contacted me again. They offered no compensation at all, not even a drink as Id been waiting around a long time.I always thought the Wadworths chain was good and reliable.Spoilt the evening.

Whilst staying at the hotel our group of 4 had an evening meal there. All the meals were tasty and my husband was particularly pleased with his perfectly prepared medium rare steak. Whilst my Lasagne was very nice the portion was tiny (Approx 3 ins square) and half the plate was lettuce /rocket.

We really enjoyed our stay at the George. We were welcomed by a very friendly Male receptionist who helped us enormously. The room was quite large and the bed comfortable. Would not hesitate to recommend the Hotel

situated in Central Frome, so chosen for location and parking. Underground car parking is safe, but limited room, and, if full, very tight for manoevre Our room was clean and well appointed..Downstairs area let the hotel down. Very dark and dingy. Service was adequate. We were in bar during the evening and last orders were called, then lights went out and bar closed. Nowhere else to sit downstairs with our family, so had no choice but to retire to bedroom. We were very surprised that a hotel had no lounge area where we could sit away from bar. no tables available at breakfast so had to eat in bar. Again very dark area and service was quite poor. Downstairs toilets smelt of urine as i passed the open door of mens toilet. My sister said the toilet she used was dirty and off-putting.

Nice meal in the bar of this good hotel. Standard pub favourites on offer. Enjoyed the squid and followed up with a great chocolate brownie. Recommend

I visited this hotel for a one night stay. I paid £91.95 for one night including breakfast. The stay itself was not too bad, the room was fairly basic, not the cleanest but it would do. The service during breakfast was severely lacking, basic items such as coffee were forgotten and the service was very slow despite the dinner hall being very quiet. When I went to check out I wasn’t asked how my stay was or if everything was okay, then a member of staff named Charlotte took payment for my stay on the card machine. I had expected to be automatically charged upon checking out as per usual, as they already had taken my card details. However, I paid the amount manually and when I returned home I realised that I had been charged this amount twice.

Stayed here in the way down to Cornwall, rooms were good had everything we needed.

Visited today for lunch, lovely setting and ambience , the two ladies were very competent and efficient , Charlotte took time to talk with me and my son, food took about half an hour, however was well worth the wait, a beautiful ploughman's and burger meal! Definitely will b back x

We were really disappointed with our lunch at this hotel. The two members of staff we experienced were monosyllabic and looked miserable. They really appeared to not want to be there. Good customer service can really make a difference to how you view a place. Poor customer service just comes across as rude. We waited 50 minutes for our meals, one of which was a vegetarian meal. Two of the vegetarian choices on the menu were not available, which left one 'choice', and when this arrived I wasn't even sure it was entirely vegetarian, but at this point we were keen to leave. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day as I see there has been a mix of both good and bad reviews recently. Unfortunately, after the money and time spent there, we won't be risking it again - or recommending.

We stay at the George for 10 nights whilst working close by & I can not speak too highly of the staff. We started early every day & on several occasions the kitchen opened early to serve us breakfast. Likewise in the evenings we finished late & rang ahead to order a late meal which was served with a smile. We'll definitely be going back (if they'll have us?).

An excellent old school hospitality rarely experienced these days; all the staff were very accommodating and went out of their way to make our work stay as comfortable as possible. Great pub food and good English ales, nice range of wines and spirits too. Sunday roast is damn good too!

We needed some dinner on a Monday night in Frome, found ourselves in the town center and quite a few restaurants closed on Monday.

My husband and I stayed at the George last night. The staff were friendly and attentive. We stayed in the delux room with the four poster bed. The room and bathroom were immaculately clean. Tea and coffee facilities were also great with some lovely touches (nice biscuits, bottled water). Also a lovely balcony which overlooks the high street and fountain. Four poster was very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. Breakfast was also a win, attentive staff again and nothing too much trouble. Breakfast was very tasty, with good quality ingredience. A far cry from the awful stay we had at the Archangel a couple of weeks ago. The George also has a car park, which is a real bonus in Frome. Great value for money and this will be our hotel of choice in Frome from now on. Thank you for a fabulous stay. One minor quibble is I couldn't find the hairdryer this morning.

Booked into The George for a weekend away for my birthday. Parents and I spent 4 nights here and had a reasonably good time.

Myself and my husband had a 2 night stay at The George.. We had excellent service with very friendly and helpful staff.. we enjoyed two great meals from bar food menu and a breakfast to choice to die for.

Thought we'd pop in for coffee at about 5pm on a Monday. Only four other customers. Ordered our lattes, after 10minutes of waiting and listening to the staffs personal conversation, decided to ask about coffee order. Staff obviously forgot they were working and was there to serve customers.

Only live about 25 miles from Frome, so used this as our annual January trip (always have a night away in Jan as it’s so long and miserable) needed a base so we could have a few beers and not think about driving!

My friend and her youngest son came to Frome and we decided to use The George for lunch. A mozzarella with sun blushed tomato and pesto with rocket panini. The bread was so hard that it was difficult to cut and the sun dried tomato was a shrivelled wreck and also hard to cut. My friend ordered ham, egg and chips with tomato. She requested peas instead of tomato. The bar lady said that she wasn't sure if they had any. It was served with neither peas or tomatoes and the yolk of the egg was hard. Her son had the chicken burger that came with 2 large onion rings and chips. When bitten in to it was dripping with grease as were the onion rings. We ordered drinks that included a jug of tap water with lemon but no ice. It came with ice and had to be removed.

After contacting the hotel in regards to parking after we had booked 3 nights the staff response was quite amazing it clearly states free parking however when I rang to confirm two members of staff had no idea of height restrictions or the availability of parking and one member stated "well a van did get in once " this meant cancellation of hotel and family disappointed as new year plans ruined, after contacting the hotel by email twice with no response am hugely dissatisfied with this hotel and it's staffs knowledge and the fact it states free parking is a stretch of the imagination thanks the George hotel for your response (none) and the knowledge of your staff (none )

Shocking, table booked for 12.30, starter 40 minutes later, main 1 hour 10 minutes later, Turkey, pig in blanket, two hard carrots, 3 hard sprouts I sprig of Broccoli, and fried (roast) potatoes and lots of horrible gravy. It's was all cold food, waitress was asked to take it back. I did say to microwave mine, she said it's not allowed, my meal came back the same one, with more gravy on it, it had been microwaved. My sister had a new meal and still cold.

I jest at the title. But if you are not fit it is a bit of a climb. But once you have made it. The room is lovely. Yes the bathroom taps could do with a revamp and the bath side panel needs to be changed for ease of access for maintenance. But the chamber maids do an amazing job cleaning and replacing water and biscuits every day.

Our arrival gave us a false impression of The George, it was the evening of the switching on of the Christmas lights.The pub was totally full, lots of noise and children running around. However calm returned to show this delightful pub/hotel in its true light.

Perfectly adequate reasonably priced meal, but nothing to get too excited about. The pie of the day was quite nice, but the mash was a bit lumpy. The fish of the day was OK, but again nothing outstanding.

We have just spent three nights at the George Hotel and we enjoyed our time there very much. It is a very old hotel and needs some refurbishment but it was spotlessly clean. The towels were good quality and were changed every day as was the bed linen. There was a good choice at breakfast and the food was of good quality. We would definitely return

Un hotel pequeño, acogedor y un poco antiguo. Si te toca en el último piso, AVISO, no hay ascensor, así que mejor que no lleves maletas muy pesadas. No es que hayan muchas escaleras pero no es un acceso muy cómodo. No esperes muebles modernos ni muchos lujos, pero para un finde bien. Algunas humedades en el baño pero sin más problemas. Tenían amenities y además pusieron bolsitas de té y galletas. Aunque por allí es típico. La TV para poder usas USB. En general volvería.

My 17 year old autistic son and I were in Frome visting relations we stayed here for 2 nights we wish we could have stayed for longer. Being autistic my son likes to be settled and comfy where he stays and the George was definitely this. The staff were brilliant and so so helpful. On arrival I asked what spreads for toast as my son has Nutella and at breakfast it appeared. With my son feeling so relaxed and happy I could relax and enjoy the break. Can't wait to go back. The world would be a far better place if everywhere had customer care like the George. Thank you Alice

I stayed here for 5 nights. Checkin was quick, the staff were very professional, helpful and friendly. My room was clean, quiet and very comfortable.

Hubby and I were down visiting my mum in Gillingham. We’ve never been to Frome so decided to give it a try. Despite the rain, it is a stunning place. We opted to eat at the George as the staff seemed so nice and the prices reasonable. The young lady who served us was lovely. That was as far as it went! We had to ask for the table to be cleared, then thee times, Mum went to find someone to take our food order! He promptly did, two fish and one Mac n cheese with a chicken breast. 35 minutes later the fish arrived, 5 minutes after that the Mac n Cheese landed, minus the chicken. Hubby told the waitress who promptly said she get it sorted. 10 minutes later she hadn’t come back or made it to the kitchens. We then saw her serving other tables with food. I went to find someone and was ignored by three people so I spoke to a young lady sorting cutlery. By the time they had sorted the correct meal the fish had gone cold and wasn’t enjoyed and hubby didn’t really get to appreciate the Mac n cheese! There were apologies made, in a very rushed manner. Whilst we did get one meal taken off the bill and 15% discount it didn’t really make up for our first ever visit and we have all agreed that we wouldn’t eat there again. Frome itself is lovely, despite the rain.

We were in Frome for a famiy wedding and the majority of us stayed at The George in the centre of the town. It was a lovely stay with the staff very welcoming and really nice large rooms. We had a bar meal the first day which was lovely and the full english (included in price) was great.

We stayed at this Hotel for five days at the end of August 2018, the room was very comfortable and quiet, the room was serviced daily to a extremely high standard, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location is ideal for easy acces to nearby attractions, we would definitely stay here again, the rooms are accessed vIa stairs

We stayed at The George on a Sunday night before going to Longleat the following day. The staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. The hotel itself was clean and like a rabbit Warren. Obviously extremely old with original features and it was a trek up on staircase and down another and round this corner and up again until we arrived at our room. This also had original features but with modern appliances. It was spacious, clean and comfortable. If you are looking for something with character this is the place to stay. The bar area is cosy but can be noisy but you can eat in the restaurant. They were only cooking Sunday lunch. We had squash soup, beef and sticky toffee pudding. Can’t really get a Sunday roast wrong. It wasn’t spectacular but it filled us up and on around £15.00 for two courses. Beware - the car park is a little underground car park around 5e back and if you have a large vehicle you may struggle to get out once you’re in!
