The building has been well renovated and operates as a hotel, bar and eatery, It has new management and staff. It was very quiet when we arrived, do note that you cannot park in the car park if you are not a resident of the hotel. There is sanitiser on entry and a QR code to scan however there was a certain reluctance on the part of the barman to manually write our details as my phone does not scan QR codes. He informed us that in a very short while there will be no admission if you do not have QR enable phone. The table are well spaced and there are notices explaining the cleaning schedule, Our drinks arrived but mine was spilt on the table, he acknowledged the spill but did nothing to clear it up. Service was sloppy and not very professional. The food we ordered was well presented and nicely cooked. but we will not be returning.

Friends of ours stayed there so we visited to eat on the first night with plans to go to super local restaurants nearby. We changed our minds (8 of us) and ate there every night as the food was so good and the menu enticing. We tasted everything and one guy had the calves liver every night! The chef is experienced and is relatively new to The George with future plans to extend the menu having fish deliveries to include scallops and lobster.Thank you to all staff who were fantastic with us.We will definitely go back.

My first visit in years to the George, new owners, and they are very welcoming, they smile which is so nice, it has a lovely ambience, a really nice place to be relaxing, and you get waited on with your roast, the chef has to be a yorkshire man the size of the Yorkshire puddings and the flavour very tasty, the pork was nice size slices very lean with fat only on the edge, cracking, apple sauce, and this was new to me black pudding stuffing, roast potatoes, really nice carrots, broccoli and cauliflower cheese, and the best gravy ever, I need to go back chat up the chef I need to know more about this gravy, I can honestly say this roast was the best I have ever eaten out, I can recommend and know you will not be disappointed.

Recently this pub has undergone new management and a team new of staff who were working like busy bees! All super friendly staff who kept me topped up with fresh milk for my tea in my room. Three of them were working a busy Saturday evening shift, keeping us all fed and watered whilst socially distancing. Shame their card machines don't allow for tips in this progressively cashless new normal. Decor inside the pub is very gastro pub and the food quality is high. Parking is free for patrons. We were in room 104 which is really weirdly laid out. The end of the bed gives about a foot before the bathroom wall starts so you have to scoot past it without taking the TV off the wall each time. Best suited for someone who isn't clumsy! Agree with other reviews that it is a noisy location as you are on a busy roundabout type setup... However with Boris Johnson new 10pm curfew it means that it isn't pub gatherers keeping you awake. Dinner was delicious... We both had mussels which were amazing. I had the veggie Wellington and my fiancé had the George burger. Puddings were a yummy sticky Toffee pudding and a custard tart.

Stayed for one night in this beautiful hotel. Very Covid aware. Clean, large hotel rooms. The manager, although I didn’t catch his name, was spot on and was on his feet working hard day and night. Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere despite the current climate of Covid 19. Although the town itself lacks things to do it was an ideal base for exploring nearby towns. Will definitely stay her again.

George looks much swisher than the pictures. Lovely ambience from outside lighting to staff being so friendly, accomodating and kind. The food was excellent. Mackerel starter with smoked eel was gorgeous with the gooseberry pickle and two mains of calves liver which was cooked to perfection, beautifully chargrilled and pork belly, no fat in sight just lovely crackling and moist meat. The veg was delicious too. Pudding was a step too far in egg custard and sticky toffee pudding portions too vast to eat. Fabulous honeycomb ice-cream. Can't wait to go back, again and again. Wine was well suggested and whole meal £70 including 4 pints of beer and 2 wines.

The staff were very helpful and happy. Particularly the young man behind the bar who, despite being rushed off his feet, was always polite, happy and helpful. He said that he had only been in the job for two weeks and all I can say to the management is that he is a gem and you need to look after him. He was amazing.Myself and my mum both had the roast pork and it was delicious. The veg was well cooked, not undercooked or overcooked, just right.I must mention the gravy which was out of this world!!!!!I would fully recommend this hotel for a meal. Customer service and staff were excellent, extremely friendly and helpful My only issue was the bedroom, I stayed in RM104The room seems to be over the kitchen area where there must have been some kind of cooler installed below, a loud vibrating noise every 5 to 10 minutes (sounded very similar to an electric drill being used one or two floors down) fine during the day however at night when you go the bed it is extremely frustrating. No literature left in the room for Wi-fi access (no password and no phone in room to call down to reception to find out)Also not much space between end of bed and TV on wall to walk past to bathroom....hit head on TV several timesWould stay again but in a different room

We stayed for three nights at the George while exploring the Jurassic Coast. The hotel, an eighteenth century building right at the centre of the town, has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. Although there is a fairly busy road outside, traffic noise was not a problem even with the windows open. We ate at the hotel each night and the food was excellent. The menu is not wide but offers some very imaginative, well-presented choices. There is a range of real ales available. The most outstanding feature of the hotel, however, is the staff. They are welcoming, friendly and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the hotel. The location is very convenient. There is a free car park available, though this can become rather congested. There is, however, a very reasonably priced NCP car park just across the road, which we used one night.

Having had our Kefalonia holiday cancelled we were looking to getaway for a few days in the UK. We found The George Hotel offering the 20% discount so opted for this.We arrived at the hotel which had a one way system due to Covid19, this worked perfectly,We were shown to the stairs and informed of the exit doors and how to find the room. We were booked in for a King room which was perfect. The bed and pillows were the most comfortable ones I have ever slept on. Now the rooms are not made up or replenished during your stay due to covid19, it was easy enough to ask for toiletries and towels to be replenished and this was done promptly. Our room faced The main busy road which was quiet at night, only issue was the chorus of seagulls and they unfortunately can't be gagged. We had dinner on the first evening which was delicious, a little pricey but the Hotel clearly has taste as it is a popular place with people. The staff are amazing, friendly happy, helpful and busy busy busy. They have the table service system working perfectly, can not fault any of them. I have to say the food was fantastic, everything else let the place down.We were a large group that had booked and order our food in advance. We were given a menu over 3 weeks in advance to order from and the day before our booking we were called to say the menu had changed and they no longer had one of the options we had ordered and would have to change our order. We had booked our table for 7:30pm and our starters came out at 7:30pm which meant that some of our party hadn’t sat down or even ordered drinks when the food arrived. When the food came out some of the meals were different to what was ordered because of the menu change but we were not informed and end up with fish but in a different sauce to what was detailed menu we were given. From the first main being served to the last was 20 minutes so the first person had finished before the last had received their meal. On asking for a wine list we were told “our menu has just been updated, what would you like and I can let you know if we have it” rather than being able to browse a wine menu. It’s such a shame because the food was so good but the experience was let down by everything else.

Stayed for 1 night with work as we have a client locally. Hotel rooms and bar decor fantastic... really nice. The food was also fantastic.Unfortunately let down by a few of the staffs attitude. The breakfast host was surly and just generally unpleasant. Told me sit anywhere (which I did) only then to be ‘told off’ for sitting on a certain table. I didn’t really care where I sat but it’s your job to tell me. Breakfast times appear to have been chosen for the benefit of the owners opposed to the convenience of guests. They don’t follow industry standards for hotels. Probably won’t stay again which is a shame because I visit frequently with work. Politeness costs nothing but lost business does.

Booked for a one night stay including breakfast. Arrived early evening, was expected and shown to my room. Recently refurbished, very clean ... it was great. Went back down to the bar, had a couple of pints of 'Exmouth Gold' (very nice) and a thoroughly enjoyable two course meal... left a 'healthy' tip. I had been informed that breakfast ran from 0800-1000 at weekends. On waking the following morning and after a really nice shower, I decided to dispense with breakfast and get on the road. On leaving my room at 0740, I went downstairs to be confronted with three doors all showing 'exit' signs. One was back into the bar (which was locked), one into the 'disabled' toilets, and another, which when I opened it, led straight onto the street. There was another door (to the kitchen) that was locked. There was somebody in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Despite knocking on the door for a number of minutes, I was unable to attract his attention. Another person came into the kitchen who glanced up, saw me at the door (there was a small window in the door) and came to the door. She said she would open up the door to the bar. A minute or so later, I heard a key going into the lock, it 'rattle' and then silence. As the door didn't move, I assumed that she had used the incorrect key and had gone to get the correct one. After thirty seconds of silence, I tried the door to discover it had been unlocked. I walked through to the deserted bar. I went around the corner of the bar to see the woman who had unlocked the door doing something behind the bar. She looked up, saw me and said 'I am setting up for breakfast'. Not 'good morning', or 'sorry about the door' etc. When I pointed out that I didn't want breakfast, I just wanted to leave she said 'well, leave then!. I expressed concern about the 'exit' signs not leading to 'exits', to which she replied, 'weren't you told last night?' I replied 'No'. I put the key on the bar and walked towards the door to the car park. It was locked. I slipped the top bolt and it still held. At this point, I assumed it needed a key to open. I asked the lady how do I get out? She came from around the bar and slipped the bottom bolt and walked back to the bar. I informed her that I thought her attitude was 'appalling', hoped that she had a 'good day' and left. Such a shame that the 'hospitality skills' of one individual ruined what had been up to that point an enjoyable stay. All the hard work of the bar staff and chef of the previous evening was wasted. A business usually wants return customers. Regrettably, I won't be one.

My partner and I stayed Jan 31st - Feb 4th with our young baby. We cannot recommend this hotel more, it has been such a lovely first family holiday and a brilliant experience. The room was beautiful, spacious and very clean - something we look for when taking our baby places. The George provided a travel cot and she slept brilliantly throughout our whole stay.Every day we came back from trips to surrounding areas to our room beautifully put back together, as it was when we arrived. The bathroom was also unbelievably clean, with powerful shower, bath and light up vanity mirror. We enjoyed the breakfast every morning, trying different things every day. The kitchen staff even did piece of toast for our daughter when we asked. The evening menu was delightful, the garlic chicken breast was amazing and I highly recommend going to the George for dinner even if you aren’t staying in the hotel. Staying away from home with our 5 month old daughter can be really difficult and sometimes very overwhelming - all of the bottle prep, sterilising and washing makes you not even want to leave the house. The George provided what we needed to make our trip easier and hassle free, for a mother with severe anxiety this was a godsend!! The staff are delightful, Mandy, Lisa and James have all really made our trip memorable - they are all very warm and welcoming and always have a smile on their faces. It was comforting knowing we were staying in a hotel that had staff who would actually pay attention to us and our daughter, knowing she would giggle and smile at them really made my day as a mother. All in all, we will definitely be staying at the George again and I will be recommending it to my friends and family!

Such a shame this meal didn’t make the grade. We have had other meals here that have been good. It took over 15 mins to get a drink, even tho the bar man knew we were there. Lady who took the order was we thought quite informed. Meals arrived, after 30 min wait one of the pies was the wrong flavour, the burger was cremated, where we asked for NO peas, peas were wasted. Straws in the kids J2O’s not nearly long enough for the bottles and the kids nearly spilt their drinks. When the desserts arrived the choc pots were missing part of the recipe, when asked where it was we were told, it wasn’t good enough so the waitress had decided not to bring it out or even mention it was missing, until we asked where it was.She did reduce the bill, but non of the problems should have occurred if everyone had been taking notice of what they were doing. However this time after being there for a bout 30 minutes we were asked if we were ordering food and when we said we were just having a drink we were then told that we couldn't stay as they were serving food and didn't want a 2 year old running around. She was walking around the bar to talk to another table and then coming back to our table, always accompanied my Granny or Grandad. If you don't want children in the bar area you need to have a sign or tell clientele when they arrive not make them feel unwelcome after they ordered drinks. Either way we won't be coming to this unwelcoming bar for another drink with or without my daughter which is a shame.

I am staying in the area and have eaten here every day so far this week. The lunch is very good, the building is very lovely. Tonight I went for dinner and arrived and ordered a glass of wine, (I’ve had a tab every other day this week) Before I had arrived I’d had a big upset and just couldn’t think straight. I couldn’t remember my PIN numbers and said to the barman that I’d need a minute to find my card. In front of everyone in the bar he removed the wine from my hand and said I’ll take that back until you’ve paid my sweet. Incredibly embarrassing. I found my card and paid. Then we decided to have dinner, I had steak which was mediocre but my husband had the smoked haddock which was minute. I don’t feel the evening service is as good as the lunch time service, having said that we were over charged by £17 yesterday!

We arrived in Axminster about 9am , l had spoken to Jamie the previous evening and he said he would find us somewhere to change on our arrival and he was true to his word. Later in the day we returned to The George, Jamie was really polite and extremely helpful. We where very pleased with the room it was lovely decorated and very clean. We were in one of the front rooms so we had a little traffic noise, but this didn’t bother us at all.I have to add that the breakfast was delicious and possibly the best scrambled egg I’ve ever eaten. We will definitely return and if anyone wants a excellent bed and breakfast venue then this is the place, you will not be disappointed. One last bonus is it’s only 2 minutes walk from River Cottage (Hughs Place)

Stayed on a Friday night, B&B. Rooms recently refurbished. Our room was bright and clean. Bathroom compact but spotless with a great shower. (Shower door needs a bit of attention as stiff to open). Bed linen good although pillows and mattress not as firm as I'd like. Breakfast was a quiet affair with friendly service. No complaints. The toast arrived with hot breakfast so was warm. A change from many places where it arrives too soon.Downside--quite noisy around 11pm-12am. Some road noise although overnight you don't get much traffic apart from the odd idiot racing through (not the pubs fault).Good value. Would return.

I expected to find the worst reviews ever when searching this place so perhaps I came in on a bad day. Understaffed at lunchtime. There's a bit of the bar where they won't even TALK TO YOU if you are stood there as it is technically reception.. Even though it's just the bar - so pathetic for paying customers who just want to ask a quick question. Stood waiting for a drink for ages whilst the guy faffed writing things down in a book. Asked for menus after ages of waiting for one, was given ONE and as quick as I looked up to ask for more the lady had run off. Sadly first and last visit here and as a businesmowan in the area, I won't be reccomending the resturant to colleagues and friends. Food was average and certainly didn't warrant poor service.

I have to say that I am utterly amazed, so for that reason only I write this review of the restaurant at The George Hotel in Axminster. My Friend and I decided to go for dinner at the restaurant on a fairly late Friday night this summer. To be precise, it was the last Friday in August. We suddenly realized the place had reopened! It was busy both inside and outside, and we hadn't booked ahead. We were met at the door by a very kind and helpfull waitress who asked if we had made a booking, which we hadn't. Never the less she managed to find us a table, handed us the menus and, despite being busy, took the time required to take our drink orders....All the time being very friendly. And for the meal.... the waitress was very patient, we ordered both boards for sharing as well as seperate mains....meat for one and vegan for me......she came more than once to ask if everything was ok, which it was, infact everything was really good So, all I can say is, that we had a lovely time, as well as a really nice and tasty dinner in a nice restaurant, and with a most friendly staff, despite them being very busy.....we shall be back

First the positives: lovely building, nice room, great shower, good in-room facilities and warm atmosphere in the pub. And the negatives: poor breakfast - 1 slice of unbuttered warm bread (not toast) and two over done poached eggs. It was not pleasant. No offer of any additional toast. And a check out on a Sunday morning of 10am meant that it was all quite rushed. Not quite the relaxing break we wanted. And a measure of a good hotel is whether you’d return, and alas we probably wouldn’t sorry.

Myself, husband and mother in law recently stayed here for 1 night. The accommodation was spot on. Lovely decor, massive tvs and very comfy beds, we all had an excellent sleep! We booked a table for 8pm on the evening and had an excellent meal/drinks all served by very friendly and attentive staff. One complaint would be the table sat behind us, never have i encountered such a rude person!! Was disgusted with the way he spoke to one of the young waiting staff by saying "take this away before i shove it up your a**"!!! Other than this nasty piece of work the night was very lovely and enjoyable. The breakfast in the morning was great, however full English wasn't very full and my husbands face dropped when he seen the size, but there are fruits, cereals and pastries available.we would definitely stop by this hotel again if we were to visit Axminster again. Also many thanks to the lady with dark long hair and tattoos, she was very accommodating in changing my mother in laws room so she could be closer to us and avoid the steep stairs :)

We recently spent three nights here as a couple with more interest in the hotel accommodation than the food. A superior room cost just under £100 a night with breakfast. For this price the room was smaller than expected with no chair, an unfortunate lack although there was a wooden church pew type window seat. Drawer space was inadequate. This is a listed building so no double glazing, a serious matter given the traffic noise around the hotel and modern environmental concerns. As with many hotel mattresses it was much too firm for us and the hotel cannot supply a mattress topper as some do. The en-suite was well equipped but with just about enough room if you were careful. The shower was first class.Breakfast was good with reasonable choice. Staff throughout were enthusiastic, helpful and knowledgeable - full marks to them. We have stayed in hotels in many places and rate the George as a solid 3*, no more nor less. If firm mattresses don't suit you then it can be a problem. Hotels like firm mattresses because they last longer.

Bed extremely comfortable beautiful bedding Both the room and bathroom was extremely spotless cudnt fault it. Earplugs provided as on busy road but they where a bit rubbish. Wardrobe cudnt hang dresses as it had too many shelves. Breakfast great selection good quality and cooked well and not over faced, although was told they were running short on bread when we asked for more toast. I particularly liked the dressing on the salad, the food was hot and prepared as we like it. It was the second time I had eaten at the George Hotel. The first time I had a very large serving of fish and chips, too much for me. With hindsight I should have asked for a child’s portion which would have more than satisfied me.

I came here with a friend for one night, when I was going to a wedding nearby. From the second I arrived, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful! The lovely lady insisted on helping me carry bags upstairs and kept apologising for giving me a room up a couple of flights of stairs. The room was gorgeous- really stylishly decorated, mega comfy beds, powerful shower and everything we needed, including a fan, TV, kettle etc. Once I’d quickly freshened up and come down, I asked the staff for advice on how to get to the wedding venue and they were really helpful. When I got back from the wedding, the staff were sitting outside as it was late and they’d finished their shift. They were all so welcoming and asked me if I’d had a good night etc. They pointed me towards a takeaway for much-needed stodgy food and when I returned they said they were going to give it another minute before coming over to find me and check I was ok! That’s amazing customer service, especially considering I dread to think what I was waffling on about to them and they’d actually all finished work by this point! The next morning they couldn’t have done more to help! We had a giggle about my drunken conversation and nighttime antics that kept my friend awake, then (despite the fact we were a little late), we had a delicious breakfast. To top it off, when I said I couldn’t get hold of a taxi company (seems to be a problem on a Sunday!) they insisted on dropping us off at the wedding venue where my car had been parked overnight- genuinely lovely staff who went above and beyond to help!

Certainly a benefit to Axminster.I'd have given it 5 stars but I hate going to a british pub that can't make a cup of tea. The barman gave me a pot of hot water and a tea-bag. A horrible, horrible modern trend. Just because the americans can't make a cup of tea doesn't mean we have to copy them. it's not difficult; you pour 'boiling' water onto the tea:- easy.

When we went to get menus were warned about a half hour wait for food, we decided this was fine but were then told they had to check with the chef if he was happy to serve us. Answer came back no sorry he’s expecting 20 people later so no kitchen! There was 6 of us.. the place was pretty quiet as most guests having drinks outside. The chef here obviously can’t cope, to turn away walk in business with so many free tables I can’t imagine chef would cope with a full house. Went to the George for lunch. There was a lady on a business video call for the whole hour we were in there, which was a bit annoying, not really the pub's fault but if I was them I would have told her to move elsewhere to a quieter area of the pub as all you could hear was her voice and it was irritating some of the other guests too. Lunch wasn't long coming, we both ordered the rosemary foccacia rolls. Fillings were not very generous. Mum had prawns and I had fish fingers ..2 little goujons in a big roll so the majority of filling was lettuce. It was delicious, however. I don't understand why places skimp on portions as it wouldn't have cost a lot more to them to add another small fish goujon! Mum's roll wasn't overloaded with prawns either. Still, it was a pleasant lunch in nice surroundings.
