The George Carvery in Harrogate

We visited this carvery on October 27th 2024 and i have no words! Firstly, Staff greeted us soon as we walk through the door and got us a table straight away! We had a toddler (2 year old) and we didnt even have to ask for a highchair. Our 2 year old is very picky with food and cutelery and they had a box of plastic spoons/forks/knifes. They even brought her a little yorkshire pudding and she enjoyed very much. We went to get our food and as soon as i tried my meal (i got mash,broccoli,turkey,yorkshire pud and gravy) it was speechless. It was so tasty but my only no about this carvery is the dessert price.. I think it was £5.50 or closer, personally i thought it was a bit pricey.. but overall it was a great experience and i would definitely come again!

Amazing carvery definitely a place to eat

We had Sunday lunch (Carvery ) at the George hotel, it was excellent, it was £15.00 per person for the carvery and £5.50 for the sweet, I couldn't find anything to criticise about today's lunch.

We stayed here over the weekend and were pleasanly surprised. Often "pub" accomodation is a bit odd but this was not like that at all. The welcome was one of the warmest I have encountered. Really friendly and helpful, without the sometimes overbearing quality. The rooms was lovely, well appointed and in very good condition. Bed was comfy and it had a huge walk in shower. Nice. Carvery was also great. Well cooked and simple fare. It wasnt all messed around with to make it "special". Just simple really well practiced cooking. Exactly my sort of thing. If we are up in the area again needing accomodation, it will certainly be on our radar.

This was our 2nd visit here whilst in the area. The beef is the best we’ve tasted and cooked medium rare the way beef should be served. Excellent choice of vegetables. The roast carrots and parsnips are so flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Service is always prompt and friendly. The steak pie looks homemade and think this will definitely be on the agenda next time. 😋

did find this jem of a place on my google search just out side of Harrogate about 15 mins tops we booked a table for 2 at 2pm and sent them an email a head of time they were very helpful there was 3 meats and a steak pie to which i had it was the best pie ive had in some time my wife had the beef and found it 10/10 all veg and mash/roast potatoes were fab so if you are a round that area pop in it will not disappoint

Just happened too see this pub on way home and omg carvey was outstanding and I mean outstanding they have set a presetence on the carvey no where else comes close too there's ,all staff where very professional polite and friendly I definitely recommend as a top notch establishment

This is our second visit. Nice surroundings. Efficient service. Choice of 3 meats PLUS 3 other dishes (pie, chicken dish and fish dish) which we've never seen this selection before. Massive yorkshires, mash, roasties and nice selection of veg. Friendly staff however sadly one down fall we found. My other half was still eating and a waitress came along to clear plates. It should have been obvious with knife and fork still in hand looking down at plate that we were not ready for plates to be cleared.

If this is Yorkshire's best carvery then Yorkshire must be a small radius around Wormald Green. The food is overpriced for what it is - £14 for two slices of pork, no crackling, and as much veg as you can put on a medium-sized plate. Puddings all over £5. I understand it's a difficult location, but it really wasn't somewhere I'd go back to.

Excellent stay overnight! Fantastic staff & lovely chat with the owner. Highly recommend & great value at £65 for a double room. Carvery was really good & catered for non meat eating husband. Room was spotless, comfortable & very quiet. Thanks for a lovely stay & We wish you every success.

Best carvery I've ever had staff very friendly food delishious nice hotel

Booked a table for Sunday Lunch. On arrival we were told that our table was in the bar and not the main restaurant. "Table 4 in the other room" we were told, but no one showed us to our table so we had to go and try and find it! Whilst we were aware that this was a dog friendly pub, not for one minute did we expect dogs to be allowed in the restaurant. Well, I say restaurant, we were sat in the 'bar' area which was more like a canteen. Because we were in the bar and not the restaurant, we had to go through 2 separate doors to get to the carvery, which obviously meant coming back through the doors carrying our food, crossing by the entrance and having to zig zag past other customers either coming in or leaving. The food was average carvery quality and certainly not good value at £15 per head. When we had finished our meal, as our table was being cleared, we were asked if we would like a dessert. We asked if we could have a couple of minutes to decide. No one came back to take our dessert order so we just paid our bill at the bar and left. Will definitely not be returning.

The food was hot.. Typically with a slow moving carvery, some over-cooked .. Not in any way amazing, limited choice of meat, veg o.k. .. Like eating in a hospital canteen… Would not dash back !!!!!

Great carvery. Choice of pork and turkey - both well-cooked- when we visited today, a Thursday. A few non-roast and vegetarian alternatives, too. Slightly disappointed by the roast potatoes (I’d have liked them crispier) but the Yorkshire puddings were great and the vegetables were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of bite. Looking forward to a return visit to this independent carvery with great food and friendly service.

Loveley meal pity the roasties were cooked in oil tather than beef dripping . Friendly staff didn't have to pay up front wouldn't happen in our area weldone

Ended up here after getting lost on the way back to York as so glad we took that wrong turning. Carvery was lovely and the staff were exceptional, lovely welcome, table service where we were seated, order made, drinks and Carvery on the table within 10 minutes. Will definitely be returning. Also dog friendly 😀

Fantastic Carvery Popped in for lunch today and saw it was a Carvery. Vert impressed with the service, smiling staff and a quality Carvery. £34 with drinks. Can recommend!!!

Seated very quickly, went to be served at the carvery, no waiting and served very ably by a young man. Plenty of choice of vegetables and a delicious hot gravy. Finished off with a Brilliant "Sticky toffee pudding. Well done to the team and Thankyou.

I had the absolute pleasure of the carvery here on a short visit. The staff were superb, super helpful and friendly, and an absolute credit to themselves and the restaurant. The chef clearly has a lot of pride in his work as he spoke about it with enthusiasm, and this showed in the quality of the food. There is a giant sign statement that this is the best carvery in Yorkshire, and I think they may well live up to that brag! It was also extremely reasonably priced. The only fault I can pick is one that a fee places seem to do in the area, it os £6 a pint, which is just mental.

Excellent carvery delivers exactly what it claims. Great cavery food,great service at a great price. You will be offered a choice of two /three roasts,a chicken dish,a fish dish, plus one other maybe sausage s The roast potatoes and choice are perfectly cooked. It's a great place for a family lunch or dinner perfect for children with healthy appetites.

Food was absolutely awful.yiu could put a window through with there so called roast potatoes,raw cauliflower.meat totally over cooked,in general terrible food.i if your after a decent carvery I certainly wouldn't go there.

My family and I decided to venture out for Christmas Day lunch to The George Carvery as we know the food is of high quality and good value for money when we’ve visited in the past. But what a huge disappointment! Bar a few bits of tinsel on some pictures and a Santa’s hat on the server, it could’ve been any average day of the week. Don’t get me wrong the food was good but as for the atmosphere - there was none. I don’t think it would’ve been too much to ask for dressed tables; linens, candles, placemats - and the joy of telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes and the wearing of silly hats? None! Because management decided to donate to the homeless (a mere £150!) instead! I’m all for donating to a worthwhile cause but when you’ve paid a bit more for a Christmas dining experience - you expect that! How about The George donating anyway whilst still catering to their guests? I seriously failed to see where the extra money, we paid for this meal, went? I felt extremely sorry also for some of the guests in the bigger dining rooms; people were told to que, for the food, and it was huge! We were actually queuing right behind people trying to eat at their own table. Talk about invading someone’s personal space. Fortunately we didn’t have to endure this (my husband would’ve found this extremely uncomfortable had this been the case), but we were sitting in an area out back which was dull anyway. I can’t even remember if there was a Christmas tree and I certainly don’t recall any songs? When we got home suffice to say we all felt rather flat - it certainly wasn’t an occasion to get dressed up for. Won’t bother again.

Called for the carvery lunch on a Thursday before Xmas. Two of us on pensioners deal, son normal cost. It was busy but we managed to find an empty table. Choice of turkey and pork roasts, I'm not keen on pork so opted for turkey only, husband the same. We were served two slices of turkey, son who had both got two slices of turkey and two pork. Was this because we paid less, slightly annoying ? Anyway it was delicious, the veggies and Yorkshire pudding can't be beaten.

I will start by saying, couldn't fault the food or the great staff. But we were here for Christmas Dinner, paying 3 times the price as any other day and there was zero Christmas cheer at all. No Christmas music, No crackers on the tables, No table decorations, very sparse decorations in the windows or around the building. We were at the first sitting and the place was rammed the queue was in every section of the restaurant, you could barely hear the people on your table due to their being a constant stream of people queuing for the carvery. Which lasted for the whole time it took myself and my family to eat our meals. Was very disappointing for the price, think some planning needs to go into it next year. Will still come here on a quiet weekend, but will 100% be booking somewhere else next Christmas.

We visited here on a visit to the Polar Express and got to say it was a nice family meal. The staff were very welcoming and took the time to talk to our kids (might have been as we were all dressed in PJs). Carvery was nice and reasonably priced....not sure what that previous review was about regarding regard to drinks prices, maybe they normally order tap water..... anyway, drinks were reasonably priced. Worth a visit for a carvery.

After a cold day in North Yorkshire, this was a welcome find for dinner.

This is a carvery. The beef (my go-to choice), was a bit pink for me so I went for the pie. I adore beef pie, normally. I did not adore this. Thre was not enough gravy. You need lots of gavy for pie .. the whole thing was kind of OK, but not really good or great.wouldn' rush there again. Improvement needed.

The carvery was good. The prices of the drinks were VERY expensive.You can get 4 J2o for £4 yet if you get ONE there it's £3.50. The cost of diet coke works out at over £70 a gallon.We complain about petrol at £7 a gallon ,now who is ripping who off.You can't cover a cheap Thursday carvery by ripping off customers on drinks. Be fair Please.

Gorgeous Carvery, Yorkshire puds are amazing. Dom the chef is fantastic and so friendly. All the team are brilliant. Great food and great service 9/10 I'd give it 10 out of 10 if they'd do cauliflower cheese or red cabbage ha 😉

The place itself is immaculate, very clean and well maintained. Unfortunately that's where the positive comments end. I pre-booked 3 rooms for 5 adults, at £80 per room. We were not allowed to book in until 4.30pm (1630hrs)😡, so we thought we would arrive an hour before booking in and get something to eat!!!, afterall it is called the George and carvery. NOPE!, service stopped at 14.30. eventually arrived 10 minutes before booking in time... The landlord would NOT up the doors until bang on 16:30. even though he could see us outside 😡. Once we were allowed in we had to pay in full immediately for the rooms🤔. I have never had to pay immediately for a booking, it's usually the morning of departure 🤔. The prices of the drinks are very expensive 😞. AND to top it off, and most annoying, there is no breakfast, nothing 😡🤔😞, even a continental breakfast would have been acceptable. I've never been to a place where they have never served breakfast!!!. I spoke to the manager, who said he thought he was going to lose the business.. NO WONDER!! if this is how he runs it 🤔🤔🤔😔. Myself and my friends were bitterly disappointed. It was literally £80 for a one nights sleep, and that's it 😔😔😔😞😞. To summarize.. it is NOT a B&B.. it just a B and no breakfast.

Very clean room, with a excellent carvery.

My wife and I stayed here for the weekend whilst attending Harrogate Woodworking show. Lovely location and ample parking, warm welcome and attentive, friendly staff. Our room was nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Bed was a tad softer than I'm used to but that didn't stop me having two great nights sleep! On saturday evening we tried the carvery and were certainly not disappointed, two perfectly cooked meats, a whopping Yorkshire pudding, veg and lashings of gravy. I thoroughly recommend this place for your short stay in the Harrogate area. 5 stars

Very Good value for money, delicious food and excellent service. The George is located in a easily accessed route.

The website advised that there were sittings at 4pm and 6pm so we booked for the 6pm slot. However when we arrived at 6.05 pm we were told to get in quickly and get to the carvery as the food would be finished in 25 minutes. At no time when we booked did they say we had to collect our food immediately. We found a table and we hadn’t even taken off our coats when the waitress came for our drink order - two of our party were still parking the car. We ordered drinks and were given a ticket for our meal. If you want quantity instead of quality this fits the brief. The meal was below average to say the least and the staff were obviously in a hurry to leave. I was also shocked that the chef placed my Yorkshire pudding on my plate with his fingers instead of tongs. We are locals and wanted to try this out but we definitely will not be returning. The pub area was a pleasant space but the large room where we were had bright lights and it felt very like a canteen. In fact we have had better meals in the work canteen. So disappointed.

This is an amazing place all the staff respect you and your needs are meeted I loved the general design of the place and the location itself I saw when I was finishing my amazing carvery which had lots of flavour I saw a staff member out the George helping an elderly lady

Just want to thank everyone at the George for a wonderful 2023 season. We have a caravan at Ripley and have dined there numerous times and it is always a reasonably priced, delicious meal! There is always a friendly welcome, the waiting staff remember your face, the chef is welcoming and generous with his portions. The meat is so tender, the veg is beautiful, our plates are piled high and you are encouraged to eat! The owners are lovely chaps, always so friendly, my kids love chatting to David who always goes out of his way to make sure they are having a great time and eating their veg!!! Our dog is made very welcome, it’s just a really lovely place to go. See you next year everyone at the George!

Large car park and easy access on A59. Went on Over 55's discounted Thursday night. £8.95 for carvery. Choice of turkey and pork. Yorkshire pudding, roast and mashed potatoes, carrots and parsnips, broccoli and green beans. Also option for fish or casserole. A vat of delicious gravy and all sauces you could imagine I.e. horseradish, mint, apple, mustard etc. We then shared a sticky toffee pudding with cream. Absolutely delicious and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Will be back soon.

We came here for a birthday meal with a very large party ie 20, including kids. The carvery was excellent and delicious. Options were turkey beef, ham and gammon and you can mix and match. They do apparently do a vegetarian option though this wasn't apparent. Loses a mark because we were told we could only have the tables for 2 hours, they only have one bitter (Tetleys draught) and the service was a little chaotic ie a waitress came and asked if she could collect empty glasses but then just stood at the end of the table while I collected and delivered them to her. But given the size of the group, we can forgive that. Overall recommended and it was our first visit, but we'll be trying it again.

It was okay. Simply okay.. Just okay... First time trying this place, there's always been alot of hype about the Gorge... We went today with options of Beef, turkey, chicken and fish... There wasn't a great deal of choice.. Of meat and veg.. I had the beef... It wasn't pink in the middle but it was good quality beef and not chewy. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The place was very clean. The whole place had a canteen vibe with food to match. We are very greatful that we went when it wasn't busy... Definitely not worth the hype...

Came here with my friends for a carvery. Plenty of parking and friendly staff who will have a chat with you. Food also lovely, one of the best carvery beef's I ever had. Deserts are well worth the money too. Big portions, so much I couldn't finish all of my food. Coming over again on Saturday and I cant wait.

Friends and I go there once a month for the evening carvery. Absolutely brilliant service, food and attention from the staff. Can't praise it enough

Dog friendly in the bar side. We had a carvery and had to collect it from the lounge which meant going through 2 doors whilst holding our plates and cutlery. The roast dinner was excellent though and I would recommend it.

Food really nice and good service however the choice of vegetables was terrible and the veg they did have was mixed. Carrots with parsnip sorry not for me! Won’t be returning.

Had to make a last minute booking the staff (assuming bossman) was an absolute gentleman about it.didn't get chance to get the full experience but will deffo be coming back.

The sign says “Best Carvery in Yorkshire” which is a bold statement. The George matches this claim with aplomb - an excellent serving of different meats, complimented by perfectly cooked vegetables and lashings of thick tasty gravy. Drinks are well priced and the staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. Dog friendly too - which is always appreciated!

Perfect location for site seeing Harry Potter and The Witcher film locations. The beds are super comfy but the best bit is the carvery. Great food with plenty choice and gluten free options. Staff are so friendly and accommodating. I will be back.

Very friendly nice fella on arrival Gary I think he was called. Unfortunately for me not my kind of thing reminded me of being back at school, very bland boring roast dinner the gravy makes a roast and it was very watery tasteless reasonable price just a independent Toby Calvary. Very poor choices of vegetables aswell would love to have seen some cauliflower cheese or carrot and swede mash. It was a shame I expected top things from this good pint of coke tho.

Excellent traditional carvery. Great food. Sundays will see you in a substantial queue. Makes you realise how all the franchises have ruined the sector.

We didn't stay here. We had the carvery, no other choice.. and it was very good.. lovely cooked turkey and beef, all the potatoes and vegetables were cooked to perfection (something a lot of 'carverys' fall down on).. not a large selection draught beers.. more larger based.. although they do have bottles of beer.. but £6 for a 500ml bottle of Black Sheep? I would say a tad excessive.

Lovely staff, we stopped by in our motorhome today, asked if we could eat in our van. We wernt disappointed, great food, Thank you and for coming out yo assist with parking. George and Caroline.

Fantastic pub. Very welcoming service. The food was very tasty and home cooked, a bonus that kids eat free on some days too! Also, it is dog friendly in a part of the pub which makes life easier. Highly recommended!

Great carvery, all food "Hot" staff look as if they want to work.

We went for the Sunday Carvery, so only accessed the restaurant.

We stopped here on our way home from Edinburgh and had a couple of drinks in the beer garden. The staff were very friendly. We are looking forward to coming back and trying the food

We are regulars at the Thursday carvery and can only say the quality and value are unbeatable for those prices. The meats and veg are always cooked to the same high standard and the desserts equally so. Drinks are also competitively priced. Comfortable surroundings, a big car park, very helpful staff - what's not to like.

Didn't stay however the carvery was excellent and the food was delicious. Service excellent.

Good value for a lovely carvery

We booked a room for one night, would have stayed longer but sadly they were fully booked. The room was clean, the bed was comfy and the shower had lashings of hot water, also plenty of complimentary tea and coffee. We had a carvery and it was fantastic, the meat was cooked to perfection as were the vegetables, the mustard and horseradish sauce were lovely and tasty and added to what was already a beautiful meal. David is a great asset front of house, approachable, helpful and we felt that nothing was too much trouble. If we are ever in need of an overnight stay in the area, we'll be back!

We love the traditional carvery, but the steak pie is also absolutely melt-in-the-mouth delicious.

Went as part of a group of 22 for Lunch. Choice at the carvery was good and quality of the food was excellent. Roughly 30% discount for over 55's on a Thursday lunch so will definitely go again.
