The Gem Fish Bar in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Not one to do google reviews too often but we stumbled upon Gem Fish & Chips when the rain had started and the children needed dinner ASAP. A quick google and we decided to give it a try. We are so glad we did! The service from the moment we walked in was amazing. We had our small dog with us and they let us in out of the rain. The kids portions were amazing and the cod was so tasty. You can tell it was very fresh and cooked to perfection. My partner and I had the hake and it was my first time trying. It came at their recommendation and we're so glad we tried it. SO delicious. The curry sauce....holy moly. We are still thinking about it a week later Would recommend Gem Fish & Chips to anyone in or visiting Falmouth!

You MUST visit this amazing fish n chip shop. There is space to eat in too. The coeliacs were looked after so well. The manager took time to go through the menu and outline choices whilst being clear they are gluten free where possible but not accredited by coeliac association. All chips are gf, and all gluten free options are cooked in this fryer. Just amazing to be reassured and looked after. Absolutely delicious too. Hands down best gluten free fish n chips we have had.

You can eat very crispy and tasty fish & chips at a reasonable price here! Staff are friendly, and the place is clean and cosy with Cornish decorations. Even sparkling water is Cornish🐟 I feel the owner really loves Cornwall. I ordered small fish & chips but it still made me full.

Gem is a great name for this establishment as it is indeed a hidden gem! A little on the edge of town but well worth making the effort to find it. Food was great, we ate in and the service was exemplary and the price very competitive compared with some we've come across on our travels around the region. We will certainly be visiting again when we're in Falmouth.

The best gluten free fish and chips EVER! My wife's regular meal was also excellent. It was a little pricey, especially for January, but, hey, we were in Falmouth!

Greeted with a smile by a friendly waitress she took our order and it didn’t take long to arrive at the table even though there were a couple of delivery drivers waiting. Food was great and the service was also great. When we payed the owner came out and had a chat with us also very friendly. After searching for 2 days for the perfect place to enjoy some of Falmouth's best fish and chips, we finally found somewhere! And wow! The food was simply delicious! I'd highly recommend the Cod+Chips, Potato fitter, Curry sauce, and Tartar Sauce!! All reasonably priced! The whole experience was fantastic, the staff were warm and welcoming! The atmosphere there was great!! It was cozy, cute with decor to match! I think The Gem, is the perfect name, for such a perfect place. If you're around the area, you've got to pop in! Don't miss out!

What a wonderful 70th birthday celebration I had in this delightful location. The staff were super friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for myself and thirty guests. We all thoroughly enjoyed our delicious fish and chip meals with various sides, and at a really favourable price. The decor is tastefully done and so fitting for a Cornish venue. Brilliant! Mum had the Senior Citizens meal which was excellent as were all our meals. We even tried the Mulled Cyder which was delicious and our two dogs were made very welcome. Thank you so much x

We had a great meal at The Gem tonight - everything was perfect with the food, really delicious fish and chips & side dishes. The staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend for a local, sit in chippy.

Last night we decided to try the Gem fish and chip shop for evening meal, we ordered 2x extra large fish and chips curry sauce and peas, wow freshly cook and it was amazing the largest and best piece of fish that I have every had in Falmouth. The chips was fab crunchy and tasty, curry sauce and peas was just perfect to complement the meal, what can I say about then staff, I don’t usually mention staff on reviews but I have to on this occasion as they were just really great not pushy but I wish all staff in restaurants were as good. I can honestly say their fish and chips are the best in Falmouth, we’ve used the rest and now under new ownership have found the best. Well done to all at the Gem Fish and Chip Shop

Great - a whole gluten free menu! The best gluten free fish & chips I have ever had! Will definitely be going back and I couldn't recommend higher to those that are gluten free or those that are coeliac.

Absolutely delicious, highly recommend this if you're in the area!!! The batter was light, crisp, and flavourful and the fish was flakey and tender. Finish the meal off with a pineapple fritter and vanilla ice cream and you're set.

A no-nonsense, classic chippie with a lot of soul and some seriously good food. Fish was tender and juicy, encased in an impossibly light, tempura-like batter. Chips were made with equal care, crispy on the outside yet smooth and buttery on the inside. Their special curry sauce is a must-try.

But, I rocked up again Wednesday evening and was so glad I did. Riva and Sean are so warm and welcoming. We had a lovely chat while Sean cooked the Cod and Chips to order. He even gave us a free tub of his new signature gluten free curry sauce to try! DIVINE. Everything was cooked to perfection. The batter was crispy but not too fatty. The fish was flaky and so tasty. The chips were amazing. We ordered medium portions and they were huge. We even had leftovers for the next day. Even the price was fantastic! £8 for a medium cod and chips! My advice is go try The Gem Fish and Chips but check when they are open!!

Took the other half of for a nice fish& chips, but the usual place was closed. Have heard good things about the Gem recently so thought we would try it out. We weren't disappointed, as we were greeted with friendly service and good food. The fish and chips were great, and the missus had a veggie pie and chips, which got a thumbs up to! Definitely will be back for more soon!

Best fish and chips I've had in ages. Haven't been to the Gem in a few years, but heard it had changed so I thought I'd check it out. Better than I remember, lush fish with crispy batter (not soggy like in some places nearby!) And the chips were just right... I'll be back soon!

The worse fish and chips I’ve ever had , and I’m 63 !! The batter on the fish was almost white and instead of being crispy, it was stodgy and the chips were mushy! 90 % of it went in the bin ! What a waste of money!!

Amazing. Top notch. Huge and super tasty scampi. Loved their food, their staff and the cleanliness! Found my new chip shop. You can eat in as well if you like. Really lovely people.

I'm almost reluctant to write this as I worry the place will be so busy if word gets out that I'll find it hard to get a look in... Having tried many in the area, this has become our go to fish and chip shop in Falmouth. It's the best tasting by far and always fresh. Delivered to our hard to find flat by the redoutable Steve our xl cod were hot and tasty - roll on Wednesday for the next opening :) I'm sad they no longer offer onion rings on the delivery menu and pea fritters would be a great addition along with offering batter scraps for us afficionados of their joyous batter

Best Yorkshire fish n chips down south by far. Been visiting this place for over 30 years. Well worth the trip. Hand cut chips and mushy peas with haddock to die for. Eat in or takeaway to the near by seat over looking Falmouth Bay, though keep an eye on the seagulls, 😂

Good old fashioned fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, (although they also offer a veggie option) great service in a pleasant atmosphere. The new owner explained he is sourcing local ingredients where possible which is great. Better than shipping things across the country. We ate in the restaurant area and it was the perfect treat on our holiday in Falmouth.

Rang in my order for gluten free cod & chips and onion rings - it was the best fish & chips I’ve had since becoming a coeliac and being able to get GF onion rings was a real treat! They were very aware of cross contamination, using clean tongs, etc. Also had the option of GF cinder vinegar. My non-coeliac family member had the regular cod & chips, said it was the nicest in Falmouth! Praise all round. Staff were very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I will DEFINITELY be returning on my next visit to Falmouth!

Overpriced, half of the fish stuck to the paper and was soggy and grey. The halloumi fried were small for £5, such a rip off.

Excellent Haddock & Chips. Gorgeous creamy flakes of perfectly prepared haddock complimented by really well cooked chippy chips. Dined with 2 adults and 2 kids. Dined here pre pandemic in 2019 and was so impressed we made a point of returning again when we returned to Cornwall this summer Restaurant is basic but clean, and was really quiet although the takeout seemed really busy. Staff friendly and service very good. Highly Recommended

My last take away tonight 😣. Love the gem restaurant but all the best restaurants have jumped on delivery band wagon, ie deliveroo etc. It really is too expensive now, I can't collect my orders cos I am disabled. So prices are well above me as a treat. Good luck to the gem and other takeaway places.

If you have coeliac or gluten intolerance then this is the best place for fish and chips. It’s an old style fish and chip shop, nothing fancy. But very friendly service, and absolutely amazing fish and chips. According to my coeliac wife, best she ever had.

We found this place by chance on the way back to our car after a long day of brilliant river trips. We decided to 'give it a go' and were really pleased that we did. The fish tasted absolutely fresh, had crispy light batter and was not at all greasy. Chips and mushy peas were fine too. Service was very friendly, and quite fast enough considering the steady stream of takeaways going on at the same time. We'll definitely visit again when next in Falmouth.

This place was recommended to us as an alternative to harbour lights fish bar. Wish we hadn’t! Portions were small, Fish was saturated with oil and was almost inedible. Really disappointing al, round.

This evening, I phoned the shop and ordered gluten free cod and chips and I collected 30mins later. Staff very pleasant, and the food was fine. Defiantly worth visiting if you are in the area.

We’d read that this restaurant did excellent gluten-free fish & chips, and they do! We chose to eat in the restaurant, but while we were there, there was a constant stream of phone calls coming in and deliveries going out (including gluten-free) so this might suit some people better. Service was good. The order took a little while to arrive, but I’m guessing this was because they were taking care to avoid cross-contamination with other orders and they were very busy. We weren’t in a rush. If we were in the area again I’d definitely return.

Ordered sausages and chips through deliveroo! FOUR (4) MINUTES after order was placed I rang to rectify my order (wanted battered sausages rather than plain, at NO extra cost as plain and battered same price but was willing to pay if there was a difference) to be told my food had already been cooked and that they were just waiting for my delivery driver and to change the order they would lose money on the food!!! 4 minutes, REALLY??? No way! They didnt cook and box up 3 lots of double sausage and chips in 4 minutes and replacing the plain for battered would increase time AND when said delivery driver delivered, I mentioned it 2 him to be told, he was SECONDS away from Gems when the order went in BUT still had to wait a few minutes for order to be ready! I am NOT knocking deliveroo as wow, amazingly fast delivery BUT to be blatantly LIED too on the phone after 4 minutes of order (everyone knowing sausages are pre cooked and my order having NO salt and vinegar to ruin the sausages would not effect the plain taken out and battered put in) is disgraceful, oh, and the curry sauce was sooo watery, and flavourless! Such a shame. But before owners respond saying it was my mess up, YES IT WAS but I rang within 4 minutes of order being placed to rectify my mess up, not 20 mins later where its understandable, 4 minutes, and then to be lied to on the phone saying order had been cooked and prepared awaiting delivery driver (insinuating it had been cooked FRESH per order, silly) lack of customer service springs to mind. When talking on phone about altering order I said fine ok to plain sausages as dont like conflict where as in reality I should have pointed out that 4 minutes was not enough time to 'mess them up' as freshly cooked sausages take longer than 4 minutes, let alone the chips! Just proved it's all 'pre cooked' and kept in warmers until sale, be it 10 mins after cooking or 6 hours! Damn

Gem's restaurant has only recently reopened following COVID, and we knew it has a reduced menu whilst it finds its feet again so we were a little nervous as to what we would find. We need not have worried, the restaurant was as welcoming as ever, and our fish and chips were absolutely top notch and up to their usual very high standard. The fish was fresh and brilliant white, the chips were not at all greasy and were crisp on the outside and fluffy and white inside. Service was friendly and excellent. It was lovely to be back. One development due to the pandemic is that they now deliver, so when we are next in holiday in Falmouth we may well take advantage of that.

Went in towards end of lunch break, they were happy to serve us, food was all cooked while we waited and had a couple of chips still crunchy in the middle but only a couple. Food was really good, nice balance of salt and vinegar as well, wasnt downing in it like some places do. Order was all correct and empty packets from all the family, very nice, thank you.

We live in Falmouth and Gem has always been our chippy of choice but recently the quality of the fish and its frying has deteriorated badly. Tonights’s cod was grey, thin and slimey. We won’t be going back.

Lovely fish and chips very busy little shop

Very friendly staff, the portions were smaller, but perfectly reasonable considering the quality of the food. Will definitely visit again. (in fact we visited twice!) The menu has something for everyone, including an excellent gluten free selection as well as lots of unusual, but very welcome sides (try the brie bites!) Well worth it and certainly more affordable than some of the more "tourist oriented" fish bars near the town centre.

I've just finished eating my takeaway halloumi fries and mozzarella sticks after been recommend them by a friend who tried them for the first time yesterday. I thought I'd come straight on here and leave while the taste is still fresh in my mouth. I'm a bit of a halloumi fiend, I buy it whenever I see it on a menu, But Gem's halloumi fries are amazing! I'm really trying hard to stop myself from going back and ordering a second helping.And the mozzarella sticks are marvellous too. I'll admit it, I do occasionally go to that fast food chain with the yellow 'M' logo just for the mozzarella dippers. But no more after visiting Gem's.
