We found this quaint, curious place off the market place and went in for a late afternoon cup of tea and a snack. We sat at the front of this establishment and were served by a couple of elderly people whom we took to be the owners. Two of us had the Evesham cream tea. This turned out to be rather strange. We were pretty sure that the thin scones were not that new and they crumbled when you tried to cut into them. But nonetheless they were edible enough when you heaped on the whipped cream and strawberry jelly jam. The tea was served in those awful stainless steel pots which I can never get to pour well without dripping everywhere. This was also curious as there were many display tea pots everywhere which would have been much nicer to use. Before leaving I made the journey to the top of some steep stairs to the first floor to visit the restrooms which were OK. Certainly OK for those nimble on their feet but no way possible for my aged parents. All in all, a strange experience - like some other reviewers have said - a little bit like going back in time...

Local café for local people. Like a time capsule of mmmm 1960's menu and service. Think wow filter coffee is a great idea isn't it. Decor and service has not moved on, and service was on the grumpy, "what! You want more salad than 2 slice tomatoe and two slices of cucumber with your baked potato" who would of thought of lettuce with that meal option. And then cash only payment. I suppose bad but good just for the trip back in time.

We had a lunch here when on a shopping trip to Evesham and I was really surprised to read some of the reviews on here when we got home. The panini was one of the best that my husband and had and my spinach and mozzarella quiche was clearly home made with lots of filling and salad on the side. The service was really friendly too. Would much rather support a local business than the chains. We sat outside in the square and it would have benefitted from a bit of a tidy but, having said that, the rest of the square was no different. Would certainly stop by again when in Evesham.

As visitors to the town we were looking for a coffee stop and considering tables were restricted to outside only there was a fair choice of cafes. Coffee was filter and served in small cups. The tea cakes were thin and a little dry, I did not really mind them being pre buttered, since the alternative is hard to spread packaged butter, often straight out of the fridge. There were no toilets available. Staff were friendly enough though.

We were recommended the pies by the couple sat next to us, who were on their second course of pie and custard. It was a great tip. I had apple and black current pie with custard ( lovely and hot- I hate lukewarm custard) my partner had chicken, ham and mushroom pie, with mash, peas and gravy. Both were lovely! I asked for more custard ( I frequently need more) which wasn’t a problem at all. The food was traditional English food and was lovely. I would definitely recommend the pies. COVID rules were in place. There were some really detail art - Mini replica of stain glass window ( presumably from the Abbey next door) and very detailed dolls house. The building is very old and as such the stairs to the toilet are quite steep. Manageable but it you struggle with stairs then worth noting. It didn’t put me off. Toilets were clean too. Payments in cash- cash machines in the square so wasn’t a problem.

Stopped here for a bite and it looks initially very nice, however there it stops. Mum had a tea cake, which was thin and already buttered. Myself and her partner had The Gateway pasty, which was nuclear hot (and no option to say if we wanted it got our cold) and was obviously microwaved making the pastry not very appealing at all. Some of the veg also seemed to be rather crisp though very hot making me think they're cooked from frozen. Finally the 3 lattes were all 12oz, though at prices equivalent elsewhere to 16oz large. It was incipid and not very good for a latte, and I couldn't pick the cup up by the handle because it was too small for my fingers and the rest of it was also deadly hot.

We sat there for a while and a young lad was going around serving and tidying tables so it was obvious he was a little busy. However the fact he didnt even acknowledge we were there was very rude..even when my husband got up and stood at the counter thinking it wasnt table service the lad still didnt even look or speak to him. We got up and walked out and mentioned to him how rude he Had been an all we got was abuse and a dont give a damn attitude, no appology or anything. Somewhat quirky service (perhaps unsurprising, as the elderly and barking-mad group before us had just asked for a glass of “apple and pear juice” (eh?) but our quiche / steak pie selections with salad were nice enough. I’ve lived in Evesham for 23 years and have never been here so I decided to try the cafe one day. Walked in and were hurried to a seat by the waitress who threw some menus at us. We both ordered scones but they weren’t fresh and the tea was of poor quality. The one waitress was quite rude. The gateway is okay, I’m glad I went, but only to find out that I won’t be going again. Also not much disabled access as the doorway is small and the floor is uneven and limited wheelchair space

After getting cold and wet exploring the town, we decided a cup of tea would warm us through. The tea room looks quaint and quirky. Everything is a mismatched but, that's not a problem. We were the only people in there, which did give me some cause for concern. We ordered a pot of tea for two and chose a cake. Couldn't fault the quality of the tea, or the cakes. Cost was reasonable. Waitress said it had been a very quiet day, but the weather wasn't really helping! On reading some of the reviews on here, I can see why some of the comments were made. Yes, it is dark and dreary, but it felt like it was how it would of been many moons ago! We didn't use the toilet so can't comment, but did see very steep stairs. Probably wouldn't of called here if I had read these reviews first, but we did and we enjoyed what we had.

What a shame - this could be so much better. It has charm and character and some reasonable staff. Sadly Evesham seems to be deadish on a Sunday so trade not good and therefore the footfall is not there to warrant more effort. The tea was fine and coffee passable. The toasted tea cake was buttery and fresh but probably not home made. Other food in the counter display looked a little tired and possibly carried over from the day before - certainly not tempting. I noticed most other people just had hot drinks. They seemed to have some loyal locals greeted by name. There’s other places in the square which we might have tried but we wanted to support the oldest cafe. I hope it gets some investment soon otherwise I fear it’s on a downward spiral.

Back in the day when the fruit scone I ordered was fresh it still would not have been very impressive. Measuring about 2 cm in height and containing the barest minimum of fruit, it was very disappointing. Added to this it was bone dry on one side and rock hard on the other. It was served with a little pot of extremely soft butter which tasted as though it had been left out of the fridge at least all day (waxy and almost rancid) and therefore inedible. I did point this out to the very young and pleasant server who apologised, but did still charged me for it! The rest of our order was very average. This cafe is in a very pleasant and I would say, privileged, location and is in a lovely building and I would expect that in an age where chain coffee houses are springing up all over the place, it should be a priority for smaller independent cafes to make an effort and take some pride in their business. Needless to say that if we are ever in Evesham again we will give this place a swerve.

Called in for a snack after a much needed relaxing time visiting the churches and sitting by the river to be suddenly full of angst following an outburst/verbal attack by a member of staff. I had commented to my friend that she hadn't returned my smile on entering but made excuses for her. We never know what others are going through. However when I turned to my friend to ask if she thought what I had with my scone was cream or butter (after dolloping a blob on top of my jam..lol), the waitress shouted across the room that 'if I'd looked at the menu, I'd have seen that cream is served with the set afternoon tea'. It didn't say butter on the alternative, but that's by the by...I didn't need to be snapped at when I wasn't even talking to her. Disputable. She had retreated to the back room without response to my shocked explanation. So we put our money on the table and left our food and drinks to find an alternative venue. After we sat down at the table the woman who served us was really quite curt and offhand throughout us ordering. We also noticed a table of 3 next to us who had also just arrived were ask what sandwiches were available, the waiter rudely pointed to a menu on the table and said 'it's all on there' whereupon the three of them looked at each other in amazement and got up and left. The food was reasonable when it came but I went down to the back of the place after looking for the toilet(no signs) and a man came up behind me and said 'you looking for something' (again quite rudely!) I asked where the toilet was and he just pointed up the stairs. The stairs were extremely steep and were covered in a filthy carpet you had to hold both wooden rails to get up there and these too were caked in grime. The toilet room was tiny and hadnt been cleaned for years by the looks of it with a small dirty towel to dry your hands. I did wonder how clean the kitchen was after seeing this! Looking now at other reviews it seems these points have been raised before but absolutely nothing has been done about them!

Decided to try The Gateway for lunch, after looking around Evesham on our first visit to the town. Attracted by its promotion as a family-run cafe etc. and its proximity to the lovely area around the abbey/church. We had 'vegetable' soup, chilli, and a baked potato with quiche. It's been a very long time since I have been served soup that just tasted like 'packet soup' in a cafe: these days, it is usually home-made and consisting of a discernible type of vegetable. This just tasted artificial, with an unpleasant texture. The chilli was completely without flavour and the quiche very ordinary. All served with a lack of charm and in a cold cafe. The toilets were under-par too. A cafe to be avoided unless they seriously improve the quality of their food and service.

Interior is cramped dark and dirty, I dropped my coat on the floor and it came up covered in a tumbleweed array of muck. We had quiche and jacket potato. The pastry on the bottom of the quiche was raw in places, and, although it had obviously benn nuked in the microwave, was still cold in the middle. I didn't fare much better with the spud - hard to get wrong - but it was tasteless and once again, raw and cold in the middle, and all served on a plate more suited to a dolls house! Had planned to have dessert, but decided to pay and get the hell out, never to return! So sad, as they have the potential for customers a plenty in the dog owners that visit the town, but hopefully, the dog owners will read this and pack a picnic instead!!!

Ambience is "olde worlde" and cakes out of this world. The busy staff coped with our large party efficiently. But - and I am sorry to say this - it needs a very deep clean in the downstairs tea room. Things felt sticky! And upstairs there is a single unisex toilet in a very poor state.I probably won't be going again sadly as the cakes are good.

We visited as a family and entered into a very empty tearoom. There was one other table occupied. An unsmiling and unfriendly member of staff came into the room from the back to greet us. We asked if there was a highchair available - this was followed by a grumpy "no". No explanation, apology or offer to try and accomodate us. So we presumed if the service was an indicatio of food quality - we would simply go elsewhere.

Just a little stop late on a Sunday afternoon for ice cream, coffee, flapjack and pasty. We had our 2 dogs with us and assumed that we would have to sit outside, which we did, but they are dog friendly and we could have gone in. There was a bowl of water from them and waitress also came out to give the dogs a treat. We did ask for takeaway drinks and the staff were very accomadating in finding us some plastic cups. They were very friendly. Coffee was warming, flapjack was homemade and very tasty. My hubby said that the pasty was the best tasting in a long time. Lovely position tucked into an old part of town, lovely old building. Great experience would definitely return when in Evesham again.

First impressions, this little Tearooms looks very inviting, however, what a disappointment, and i have written many reviews and generally good, sadly the same can't be said for this little place! We weren't at all impressed with the service or the food/drinks, you would think 2 hot chocolates a toasted teacake and and a flapjack would have been simple enough wouldn't you. The hot chocolates were very dark and strong and not actually 'hot', the flapjack was actually inedible, I noticed my daughter wrapping it in a serviette and saying she couldn't eat it, it was dreadful, as for my toasted teacake, a gentleman served it to me having already been sliced and buttered, that's a first, normally the butter pats would be on the side to spread yourself, there was hardly any on the teacake and it was as dry as 'chaffe'! This is one place we won't be returning to!

Visited and should have left. Grubby carpets. Hole in ceiling. Dark and dingy and the back. However, on a brighter not the staff were friendly.Food okay. Tiny plates and panini burnt but girls enjoyed the hot chocolates. I can't believe they charge 30p for lukewarm tap water! 30p!!!!!!!!!! That alone put me off ever coming back. They also only accept cash so had to dash to the cash machine. Overall, not going back. Nicer cafe around the corner which would have gone to but they were full. Unlike this place.

My fiancé and I have visited this cafe before for cream teas and never had any problem, although we've never needed to use the toilet! Yesterday's lunch was another matter. I ordered a salmon sandwich, having asked the waitress whether it was smoked, as I do not like cold unsmoked salmon. It arrived and was not smoked. I made an attempt at eating it, but struggled as it was so blatantly out of a tin. I didn't mention it, as it wasn't really worth the fuss, but then at the end of our meal she tried to significantly overcharge us because she misread the menu for prices.

The good? It was open on Sunday when most weren't. Evesham has become dead on Sundays in the last two years. The bad? Read on.The two young women serving whilst very pleasant, didn't know their way around. This is the ONLY cafe we have ever been in to charge [30p] for tap water [warm, tasted like petrol]. Service was very slow. Asking for soya milk was like asking for a free meal. The baked spuds were average, the fillings good. The 'garnish' wasn't. My 'cappucino' was the worst I have ever had. I think they missed the cup when putting in coffee. Quirky yes, tired certainly. Perhaps a clue as to why this place survives could be found from the couple on the next table. The woman criticised her first course quite strongly, then ordered more! Stay away unless you want surreal and hideous liquids.

The toilet in this place could do with a good cleaning! We both ordered meat pie. My husband chose jacket potato. I chose vegetables. My husband's came with a very small potato (a skimpy meal) but mine was a good size with new potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, gravy, and carrots. All was fine except the carrots, which were old, limp and dried-out. I left them and when I mentioned them to the waitress as we were leaving, she LAUGHED. What an attitude! We will not go there again.

Wow, glad I didn't read the TripAdvisor reviews or we'd never have tried The Gateway. We needed a late lunch. Stepping through the door is to enter a timewarp. There a counter near the door displaying an array of snacks - cakes, sausage rolls, yule log etc (all looking reassuringly homemade - not sure if on the premises, though). Nearly all the tables at the front were taken except for the one big one in the window. I assumed it hadn't been cleared because it was littered with cups and saucers - but actually that's how they roll at Gateway - there are cups on the tables, one per cover, like breakfast service in a hotel. We chose a cosy table at the back. It was daylight outside but you'd wouldn't know it sitting at the back. This is a cafe to hide in. And, as another reviewer remarks, there are signs on the wall saying 'Turn off your mobile', which I rather like. If you want to enjoy some quiet time, alone with your work or a book, this is ideal. Costa Coffee it ain't. We ordered tea - I asked for a pot of hot water and the waitress (older lady, dark shoulder length hair) helpfully explained they normally put 3 teabags into a pot for 2, so should she just do 2? Yes please. My companion ordered the special: chilli con carne, which we heard being microwaved (which is totally fine), and it arrived with rice and a bowl of tortilla chips. It was tasty rather than spicy-hot, most enjoyable. I ordered a toasted tea-cake. It arrived with one half burnt. Actually black on the whole of the underside, and charred on the cut side. A male server (older man, silver hair) replaced it straightaway, 'I'll bring you another one.' Which wasn't so cremated. Both arrived buttered though, which we thought was odd. I'd rather do that myself. Maybe it was margarine...? After reading these reviews, I'm glad I didn't peek into the kitchen or need to use the loo. But we did enjoy the chunky old furniture, decor that could be straight out of a theatre set, and quirky models (Amiens cathedral, cleverly lit in a alcove and a doll's house) set into the wall. The Gateway is about as far away a cafe can be from a chain cafe. But that's exactly why it's worth a visit. No beeping mobiles, no yamping brats - instead a simple menu and a timewarp theatrical experience for the price of a cuppa. Marvellous.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We visited Evesham for the first time today. We saw what looked from the outside as a quaint tea-room in a very old and interesting building, so we decided to call in for lunch. I probably should have turned around when I saw the sign near the entrance that said, "Dogs welcome, but children on leads". I was there with my other half, our three children(9,7 and 5) and my brother and sister-in law. We decided to sit at the back so that our children wouldn't be in the way. We passed signs that told us to turn our mobiles off and one that said that something nasty would be done to unattended children! Inside the decor was supposed to be in keeping with the age of the property, but was actually dated, dirty and in need of refurbishment. The carpet on the floor at the back of the tea-rooms was really dirty and there was obviously a leaking roof above. But as long as the food is good you can live with dated decor. The tea cups (those mass catering steelite variety) were already on the table, which was unusual and several were dusty and crumby. Sugar was in open bowls on the table, which was a huge temptation to our children, whose fingers went straight for them (how many others before?).We ordered tea to drink, bacon/sausage baps (when asked how big the baps were, we were told average size!), a tuna sandwich, some fruit juices and a cream tea. We discussed the ordered in which my B-I-L and S-I-L would like their baps and scones with waitress. In the mean-time I took one of my children to the loo, which was really dirty. I don't mean the toilet itself was dirty, but the floor had not been cleaned and and the sink was scummy and uncleaned and everywhere was dusty and cobwebby. It looked neglected and that no-one had cleaned it for a week or two.We then got the food which was very average. Obviously cheap rolls, cheap sausages, no nice garnishes with the sandwich, just very basic with no extra effort. My daughter said she didn't like her sandwich and so I tried some. I had to spit it out, it was the worse tasting tuna sandwich ever! I don't know how they did it!On finishing their baps, my B-I-L (helpfully) told the waitress that they were ready to have their cream tea now.For which he was told that they were very busy and under-staffed and they would come, when they come. Which was a very defensive reply to a neutral remark. We paid up and left. Afterwards we checked the Trip Advisor reviews and realised we had made a big mistake going there, as others had the same experience. It is a real shame as the tea-rooms are in a prime location and were obviously good in the past but now they are neglected and poor in standard. Someone with a bit of hard-work and vision could really turn them around.

I went here for a light lunch. The staff were really lovely and friendly and served us promptly. We had paninis which were good size, were served in good time and were very tasty. However, the interior of this restaurant is so outdated, shabby, and dirty. The toilets are horrid and up a really steep flight of stairs, which must be a particular problem at this tearoom since its clientèle seems to be very elderly locals. Despite going to a tearoom, I am glad we didn't have tea. The cups sit out on the tables permanently (and have done presumably since the place was built judging by the state of them) and are filthy. The sugar bowl was really disgusting too. Needless to say I will not be returning.

My family and I visited this café today, just for a coffee and slice of cake, well how disappointing. Where do I start, the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. Firstly we had all our drinks, absolutely ages after we ordered and there were only two other people in there, then my daughter received her flapjack, she waited a while then decided to eat it, she ate it and we still sat there waiting for ours, then I received my pie, and my son in law received his BURNT treacle tart, we called the waitress over and told her and all she could say was 'erm', we then had to ask her to replace it, my husband had only ordered carrot cake and he was still waiting for his, I wouldn't mind but the two that had to be heated arrived before the cake,... and we had to ask again for it. If you want to eat in different stages, and be served by staff who don't know what they are doing, then this is the place for you. If you want to eat in a professional establishment then avoid this one.

On a brief lunch stopover we called at this tea room by chance. I wish we had seen the trip advisor reviews first ! From the outside it looked a quaint tea room, once seated inside it was clear it was shabby and in need of attention. We ordered a pannini (which was ok) and soup which appeared to be straight out of a packet/tin (it may not have been but certainly there were no vegetable pieces evident) and served with a defrosted bread roll. Service was functional, not warm or welcoming. We would not revisit.

Looks nice from inside but my god. The glass lampshade on the table had a thick layer of dust on it. The toilet was diabolical and the towel needed a bloody good wash. There's a sign saying do not use your mobile. I was using mine as no one tells me what I can do. The look I had from the waitress...well. She chucked my cutlery at me. My cake was stale, so I left it. The whole place was dirty and how it got a 5 star rating is beyond me. I think health and safety need to make a much needed visit! Avoid this place for your own safety!

Very poor value for poor quality food. £3.60 for a cheese sandwich which turned out to be mainly pickle with a few strands of grated cheese. There was the option to pay an extra £1.25 for a salad garnish!!! A "warm" cheese scone was a disgusting over-peppery tiny scone which had been nuked in a microwave, as had the sausage roll. They even charge for tap water. Several staff stood around doing nothing, or reading the newspaper, and yet cobwebs everywhere. When we asked for the bill we were just told the total. Glad to get out of there.

We had a lovely night away in this beautiful hotel, with an extremely comfortable bed in a room in the main house. We had drinks in the bar before exploring the gorgeous gardens and meeting Charlie the kitten amongst the roses. Our evening meal was wonderful. We were offered complimentary Prosecco each (it was our fortieth wedding anniversary) and we started with homemade sourdough and pate which was delicious. For the mains, I chose the lamb which fell apart under my fork and my husband chose the chicken which was moist and delicious. Breakfast was equally fabulous, with a choice of cereals/juices/toast and we had the full English - one with poached egg and one with scrambled - all cooked to perfection. Great place, great food, great service from lovely, helpful and smiley staff - we will return…
