Generous portions but the halloumi baguette had a very weird taste and the coffee was like lukewarm dishwater. Nothing like a capppucino, they clearly don’t make proper coffee.

I’ve been to this pub several times over the last 6 months and the service is always quite slow, and when I last visited with a group of friends and our children, we felt like we were inconveniencing the woman behind the bar when we wanted to order food. She was quite rude, as was the chef when he brought some of the food outside to us. The menu has also changed recently and there’s very little on it now. I won’t be in a hurry to visit again anytime soon.

The Gate Pub is in a beautiful location surrounded by hills and fields. We hired the function room for an evening in order to hold a special family gathering. It has access to a private garden area and has a private bar. We wanted a relaxed atmosphere with people able to move between the function room and the garden as they pleased. It was perfect for our needs. The owners of the pub were friendly and accommodating. They let us decorate the room the night before which helped us tremendously. During the evening the staff were friendly and attentive. We’d ordered a number of pizzas in different flavours for everyone to share and they were delicious. The evening was a great success thanks to The Gate Pub.

We were delighted to find somewhere still serving food on a Sunday afternoon and had optimistic expectations as this pub looks good and is located in such a beautiful setting. We ordered a nut roast and a lamb shoulder which were both served luke warm. The portion sizes were underwhelming. We mentioned that the Yorkshire puddings were literally cold so the dishes were taken back and re-served with new (cold) Yorkshire puddings! By this time everything else on the plate was lukewarm. I know we arrived late but the food was really stale and at least needed to be heated through properly to be considered passable. The nut roast was dry and flavourless. We were hungry so we ate. In terms of the service the staff/owners did not smile or engage with us at all. The park area was unkept and dilapidated with dirty equipment that is not safe for kids. For £57 for dinner for 2 plus 1 toddler with soft drinks, I expect better. Like hot food and service with a smile. I don’t think it’s much to ask. We will not be going back.

We booked a table for 2 for 5pm. The person taking the call must have misheard and thought we were a party of 5. They confirmed they were expecting us for 5pm. No matter. We then asked what the meat was in the 'Pie of the day' and was told it was beef so that's what we ordered. The menu clearly stated it came with gravy but when it came out we had to ask for it. And to our surprise when we opened the pie it was chicken. I think it came with mushrooms and was flavoured with Tarragon. Now some people might not like that flavour. When we were asked if everything was OK we mentioned the fact that we were expecting beef and the person said that the pies must have been yesterday's. Well I didn't want yesterday's pie - but, by that time we had started to eat the dinner. So why can't the pies be labeled 'beef' or 'chicken'? My other problem was the grilled vegetables. They were far too undercooked. I like my vegetables with a bite but these barely saw any cooking. OK, I should have said something to the waitress but when you go out to dinner you don't want to spend time complaining. The proprietors are trying to make a go of it putting on a free band for the evening and a reasonable children's menu for what I saw, with a large play area to keep the children occupied but when you're just out for a meal the meal itself is an important part of the experience.

The staff have gone above and beyond to ensure guests feel safe, comfortable and relaxed in this pub. I have never seen such a gleaming clean pub. On arrival at the bar there is a table with plenty of hand sanitizer and a guest book to add your contact details. The tables and seating areas inside the pub are well spaced so you feel very comfortable if the weather isn't good enough to sit outside. The garden is absolutely amazing and enormous with two separate gated and fenced play areas for children. Perfect for kids to play, at last!! There are loads of tables all perfectly spaced and table service makes you feel even safer as you don't have to keep going inside. The staff have thought of everything - even down to salt, pepper and sauce sachets rather than their usual pots and bottles. There is even a purpose built outside bar!We visited as a family for Sunday lunch and felt perfectly safe, comfortable and relaxed. We ordered the children’s meals first whilst we had some wine and chatted and they came out with wonderful portions and good quality food. Plates were cleared by the four children. We then ordered steaks and pies for the adults. All of which were wonderful and were truly enjoyed. The Gate is a wonderful local pub. Visited tonight for a family meal. Lovely pub, great staff and service but unfortunately the food was very disappointing. Only one plate when back nearly clear (the scampi) the rest went back with more left on than eaten so the chef must be aware that the food wasn’t up to scratch but then we didn’t say anything either to be fair (too polite to make a fuss)!!! But in returning home and after spending £170 wish we had said something. The steaks (just shy of £20 - which of course is what you would expect to pay for a half decent sirloin steak) were full of gristle and tasted of what I can only describe as fleshy. The sausage and mash (a simple classic) went back untouched. Sausages we’re under cooked, the mash resembled school dinners and the gravy was like one big lump of jelly. I wish we had said something on reflection. I’m sorry to be writing this as the pub itself and the serving staff were really great. I fully appreciate this is pub food and not fine dinning but I couldn’t even class what we received as ‘good pub food’ which is what I’d expect for what we paid. You can’t fix things of people don’t tell you what’s wrong and I’m at fault for not saying something at the time. I work in a customer focussed business on the rare occasions we revive negative feedback I always think ... I wish they had said something at the time, I couldn’t have resolved that there and then for them, now I’ve just down the same thing and not given the venue a chance to perhaps resolve or make a mends.

We held our annual Summer Party at The Gate and the theme this year was the 75th Anniversary of the AAS so there was a brilliant Musician to keep us entertained with mostly Austrian and Bavarian tunes. It is fair to say that Phil, Louise and the team pulled out all the stops. The food was amazing and it was definitely the best Wiener Schnitzel I have ever eaten in the UK. I also loved the venison, which was cured by Chef Mariuz a couple of days before. I don't eat puddings but one or two people were a bit disappointed with the Apple Strudel. An amazing effort by the kitchen to get all the food out at the same time as there was 36 of us.Of course, I would also like to thank Sharon and her team for the excellent service provided. Heard te news of changes down at the gate in new people and changes to the pay out inside. They have indeed opened up the pub which has barely changed in decades. Super job, keep the original fire an surrounds plus opening the two rooms [ public and saloon ] into one. There is also a lager dinning area at the back for parties. My what an improvement . A coat of paint and sympathetic refurbishment. The gate has a lovely position in the valley and is now so much more worth a visit. The menu is short and to the point -- simple things done well with very good value for money. We settled for the fish and chips and ham egg and chips. Old faithfuls they may be but very well done accompanied by excellent service. Lovely friendly atmosphere and at last some room . well done .

There were 14 of us and we booked well in advance. We had the roast, but was very disappointed as the potatoes came out tasting of washing up liquid with a really horrible twang. They were not edible and ruined most of the dinners, which also were not eaten. Only about 5 of the dinners were actually finished, even though chips (with a roast dinner!!) were bought out the taste ruined it for most people. Someone on another table actually left with stomach ache due to it. But it was more the attitude when we refused to pay for the dinners they were angry with us and the owner was actually heard saying that he would loose it with us if they came out to speak to us. We paid for all our starters and drinks but wasnt going to pay for food that was not edible and had ruined our family lunch. Will not go back there again. We arrived as a family for a birthday lunch on a Sunday. It took us a while to be served to order food. A family member wanted a roast but we were told there was no other meat, only pork. Another family member wanted a trio and asked for three lots of pork, a staff member with short hair and a fringe was extremely rude towards my family member and told us “no, you can’t have that” it was extremely rude in my opinion. She then said that they had beef but it would take a while. The food came out but there were no Yorkshire puddings, on the beef roast even though on the menu it states it comes with it, again the lady never informed us about this and was again extremely rude towards a member of my family, after complaining to the same lady, she then tried to explain that she did tell us they didn’t have any and had “run out”. This however is a lie and did not happen. I cannot fault the food it was lovely. However our experience was ruined because this one member of staff continued to be rude and lied about telling us about the fact they had run out of Yorkshire puddings. There was also no apology given either which again is disgusting. I cannot fault the food at all, it was very good but the one rude member of staff and her lack of manners ruined the experience for all of my family which is the reason for the poor review.

There's a good selection of beers, ciders and lagers, including one of my favourites, Old Rosie cider on draught. My ham eggs and chips was good, everyone was happy with their choices. Prices are very reasonable. The interior and décor is absolutely traditional. There's a garden area with picnic tables and a huge kids play area. This is what British pubs should all be like.

Visited The Gate again and had another lovely meal, excellent typical pub grub. Had burger and chips; homemade burger with cheese, salad, gherkin and "the Gate" sauce served in a delicious, what also appeared to be, homemade bun with homemade chunky chips, just couldnt fault it, definately the best burger I have ever had, in fact we all agreed on that point and 4 of us had burgers, the steak ale pie and scampi also went down very well and the brie wedges were huge! This is is the best place I have found for a Sunday roast also. Really friendly service too. Well worth a visit, we will certainly be going again.

Menu has been reduced and there was very little in the way of lunch time snacks. Only one portion available of the only ones that attracted us so we went in different directions. The pate was over priced and poorly presented. The welsh rarebit was less than appealing and the taste did nothing to enhance the initial impression. A fire would have been a nice welcoming feature. The beer was just okay!

We had an amazing meal but had the feeling that the landlord wanted to leave a couple of hours early. He was turning lights off around us, gave us the bill without us asking for it and he even locked up immediately after we left. We will not be going back EVER nor did we leave any tip.

Really poor management and the landlord lady is disrespectful and starts to question me and is rude to my face when I asked her why a drink had significantly increased in price since the week before. A week ago, the landlords gave you a special discount if you buy a bottle of wine without service however today this lady denied such thing existed and would question who served me previously.

We're huge fans of the Gate. Have eaten there fairly regularly for 7-8 years. The atmosphere is always nice and the food is always excellent, varied, unusual and plentiful, We thought we'd go and see how it was now under new management. We went on Saturday and noticed that the menu was now both limited and pretty ordinary. That's not really a problem, if the food is good. But sadly it wasn't particularly.I had fish and chips. The quality was good, but very mean. Portion control gone mad. I had 9 chips. Seriously! They were "chunky chips" but really? I felt the need to count them. The fish was the smallest piece of fish. Any smaller and it would have been mistaken for a fishfinger. My wife had Turkey Casserole with Bubble and Squeak. It was served looking like an un-appetising school dinner. The Bubble and Squeek was not bubble and squeak at all, but mash with peas and carrot mixed into it - and was slopped onto the plate. And the portion of cassreole was very small (and very dry and bland). It's sad. We like going there. We go there with friends. But not so sure we'll be going back. I really hope that was a one off, but not sure we want to waste money going back to see if it was. We did ask if the Chef was still there, and was told he was. So it's possible he was not in, and we just went on a bad day. We'll be keeping an eye on the tripadvisor reviews.

There is a new landlord and I think he has great plans for the gate. Having patronised this pub for thirty years and had dozens of lovely meals with my husband and my sons who are now twenty five and twenty seven it is always a worry when things change. No need to have worried. Went today with one of my sons and a friend of his and the food was excellent.Very good portions and as always served by the genial Illya. The pub was warm and welcoming warm being the operative word. Over the last two months my son and I have being doing a survey of our local pubs. Roughly within twenty minutes away from home Prestwood. We have done a spreadsheet and valued them on location, service, value for money, seating and comfort etc. It has been quite an eye opener. I think any local landlord would be interested in our honest results. The only criticism today was that we had to wait for about three quarters of an hour for our meal to arrive. No problem for me but for two hungry twenty five year old guys it was much harder.Lovely meal, warm environment, look forward to the next thirty years. Thank you.

Well known local pub always popular with decent variety on the menua and friendly ambience with good outdoor facilities. The food was good with chunky portions and no problems but then nothing really outstanding either. Does what you expect and well and has a reputation for reliability.

Attended with my wife and 2 year old and met with friends who also brought their children. It was so ideal for the children, a large contained play area with slides, swings etc. The play area was kept seperate from the outdoor dining area although there were a few tables and chairs to allow for you to eat while they played. We had the Sunday Roast which was just ok, meat was a bit chewy! The good rating is for the play area and setting really so will be returning.

Set in the Chiltern hills, so a good pub to stop at to quench your thirst after a bit of a ramble. Garden is quite large and there's a children's play area. Pub is very dated and dark. Staff are very friendly.

We booked the function room for my sisters christening. We paid for a buffet to feed 40 people but when it came out 8 people didn't eat. No apology was given for this and it is £12 per head. The lack of food was then pinned on the kids eating lots when the kids ate hardly anything. The staff are rude and unapologetic and took almost £100 of cash they didn't deserve. My mum spent so much time and money and was in tears at the end. I am disgusted. We won't be back.

The title is the location, not a Buckinghamshire Delicacy. I suspect many people would not associate this pub with Great Missenden as is a fair few miles away. Worth looking out. Has an 'Olde worlde' charm and is situated in the countryside, lovely views and walks nearby. Lovely fire in the winter and outdoor space for the summer. Great food and Beer.

I had the chicken Korma which was absolutely gorgeous, what I didn't like was the fact that when the meal was brought out, I was not forewarned that the ceramic bowl holding the curry was red hot and subsequently ended up with blisters on my hand.Partner and friends all had pies which were apparently nice.Cheese board was not really liked by either partner or friend but that is more than likely due to their own tastes. For a Saturday night in December, I would have thought there would have been more people but by approx 9 - 9.30 it was empty.

A truly proper pub. Local feel, friendly staff and excellent customer service. So novel to have bar staff actually look up and say hello and give customers a true welcome- the old school way. Pub grub so Dont expect gourmet cuisine and frothy champagne foams. But excellent pies and beers. remarkable gluten free capabilities as well. This is a true British pub at its finest! I saw it is up for sale so sincerely hope it doesnt change too much.. for the locals sake. it's a gem!

Nine walkers started their walk and finished at this very traditional pub and stayed for lunch. We were not disappointed with very friendly greeting and prompt service. The menu is extensive and also they have a "bus pass special menu" which is fantastic value. At £8.50 the meal is plentiful plus a choice of pud and coffee. Their burgers are excellent and the soup of the day is a meal in itself. The food is not nouvelle cuisine but substantial pub grub and good value. Large kids play equipment area outside and walker friendly. Overall a great country, traditional pub with good honest fare. Well worth a visit.

Have eaten here a few times over the year and food has always been good but today's Sunday roast prompted me to write a review. The food was really good, maybe a tad more expensive than other establishments but well worth the money, definately the best Sunday pub roast we had eaten, not a single complaint from a party of 8. Desserts were excellent too and service was friendly and efficient. Will definately be back!

I booked a Sunday lunch here for 7 adults and 3 children on the Bank Holiday weekend. I booked The Gate primarily because of its great play area but was slightly worried when my youngest son expressed surprise at my choice. He had memories of a mis-spent youth with friends in that area and thought of The Gate as more of a drinkers pub.I needn't have worried. It worked out really well. The play area was a big hit and our toddlers had it all to themselves for the duration. It is a really good space with 5 different slides, various swings and a little playhouse. The meal worked well too. The staff had set up the table with highchairs ready for our group, although the dining area is a bit cramped and we were thankful that, because we were having a late lunch, the pub had quietened down. They were happy for the little ones to share a child's meal and even provided children's cutlery. The adults were well catered for as well with a very enjoyable Sunday roast and delicious desserts. All the staff were helpful and made us feel very welcome. We would definitely recommend.

Location - greatFacilities for kids - greatEverything else - all just a bit dull unfortunately. The thai veg curry was extremely spicy - too spicy for a pub, and almost certainly an indian curry recipe! There was no coconut milk or stirfry veg - it looked like Beef rendang actually! My fish dish - just detailed on their board as Pollack with Ceviche - which i was told was a white wine sauce - was frozen breaded pollack with what tasted like a roux. I've googled ceviche since and this wasn't that! Maybe it's just me, but I expected fish on a menu to not be breaded unless stated. I wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. I can do that type of oven food at home. What sounded exciting was a disappointment ....you don't want your clients left disappointed when the food turns up so a little clarity would be valued.Dinners arrived at different times after about 45 mins ..... further 35 mins for desserts. That's just a bit too long and they weren't that busy. I saw the roast dinners and the pies - they looked fabulous - wish i'd had one of those!Sadly, we won't be returning. I hope they make just a few changes to move up from ok to really really great.
