This cafe offers tremendous value and good food. They have a good selection on offer for lunch from all day breakfast, sandwiches, baked potatoes and full meals - eg steak, mash and veggies. And proper pud with custard. Baked potato I had was served with a nice salad accompaniment. Really nice, traditional cafe.

We normally go to Betty`s when visiting Northallerton, but Trip Adviser guided us in to this little gem! Had teas and fabulous cakes...delightful. Everything was fresh and cakes were home made. Got talking to the staff - such friendly, nice people. They made the visit great. Would recommend this place and we will definitely be back.

We stopped in for some lunch the other day when we were visiting Northallerton and thankfully found this place which is an absolute gem. Everything is made with real care, by people who you can just tell love food and take care in every single thing they make. The prices were incredibly reasonable and overall I could not find fault at all. Well done, you've got it absolutely spot on.

Good value for money, good varied menu, pleasant service. I'd take off 1/2 a star for forgetting we'd asked for the teabags to be left on the side of my teapot - even with the pot of hot water I wasted some of the tea as it was just too strong for me - and for putting rather too much mayo on my BLT: the bacon was good though and the bread was delicious.

Came across this cafe by accident, just wanting a quick lunchtime snack. A simple straightforward menu, we chose a cheese toastie and the Yorkshire rarebit. The food arrived very quickly, very tasty and good value. Don’t judge a cafe by its decor, if you do you will miss a treat.

We stopped off in Northallerton on a coach trip. The four of us looked for something to eat.The first restaurant we went into had no toilet so we wandered into the Garthway. It was full so we asked if they had a toilet. Yes, and they had an upstairs with spaces. Much relieved we went upstairs and helped ourselves to a table. The first item on the specials board was steak pie. What does it come with? Vegetables. Gravy too? Yes. So we ordered. After only a short wait the food came. Large platefuls with lots of vegetables and gravy. The steak pies were superb with rich pastry and lots of meat. The meat was tasty and tender. We had no room for puddings as we were all full. We have no hesitation in recommending The Garthway Tea Room to anyone wanting a reasonably priced lunch.

Ordinarily I would have walked past a cafe like this. The decor is tired and the counter displays unappealing (things on plates wrapped in cellophane) however we were at the end of our treck and the family were peckish. I'm so glad we stopped by! The staff were super friendly and the food was delicious! The kids had a sandwich each which was simple, fresh and tasty. They then shared some shortbread which was very nice. My husband had a lovely homemade cheese scone and I opted for carrot cake which was homemade, generously portioned, moist and extremely tasty. I would definitely recommend this cafe. Don't judge a book by its cover. The staff were friendly and service was great, the food was reasonably priced, fresh and delicious. We will definitely return when next in Northallerton. Who needs Betty's!!Top tip: the cafe is cash-only my

Ordered three panini sandwiches and two drinks, and sat down for an extremely lengthy wait. Sandwiches, when they arrived, were of average quality and served without the coleslaw as had been stated on the menu. The menu itself contained lots of basic spelling mistakes. The ice cream menu was extensive but we were disappointed to find only the basic chocolate, strawberry, etc options were available. When we went to pay the bill we had to relate everything that we'd ordered as the poor guy obviously had no record/couldn't remember.Overall, a distinctly amateur feel to the business.

Looking for somewhere inexpensive for a good hearty lunch then the Garthway Tea Room fits the bill. I had not been there for several years but was passing and it was not too busy so my wife and I went in for lunch. The menu choice was reasonable but we were attracted by the specials. We both had homemade soup which was superb, with lovely bread to accompany. I had the homemade mince pie - wow, what a plateful of good food with plenty of vegetables, whilst my wife had a wonderful tuna sandwich, which was too much for her!The service was great and very friendly plus the prices very reasonable.Only small criticism is the lack of space between tables when the tea room fills up, can become congested but then again less tables would deny some people the joys of the food quality.....Definitely going back again!

It was quite busy downstairs so we headed upstairs. We were served quickly. My hubby had full english breakfast with coffee and I had a bacon bun and fresh orange juice. The food arrived within 10 minutes. My bacon roll was tasty but could have been a little bigger. My husbands breakfast looked good and he said the sausages and bacon were good quality. Drinks are cheap even though they come in a can with a glass and the milkshake is simply powder stuff. The sandwhich was ok with a few pringles on the side. But something you could make at home. Okay for breakfast. Not okay for lunch.

Every so often we visit Northallerton on market days (Wednesdays, with Farmers' market on the 4th Wednesday. There is a large car park behind the Main Street, and we found this small cafe in one of the side streets between the car park and the market. And now we always go there. There is quite a large menu for a small place, very homely food and drink in traditional style - for example there are only 3 types of coffee. The food is good, but for me the best thing about the Garthway is the authentic Yorkshire small-town 'vibe'. If anyone has friends from places like the USA visiting, this is where they will experience the 'real' Yorkshire. In a previous review the writer found the staff sparing of speech, but this is the local way and I am sure they did not mean to be rude. The majority of customers were middle-aged and quite a few seemed to be regulars. There are a few tables outside too. Looking forward to our next visit.

On the first approach the garthway looked like an appropriate stop off point before exploring the town further!I was with friends and two of us ordered paninis and one of us baked potato! Our food was relatively tasty and came quickly. However, the experience was spoiled by the severely unfriendly and verging on rude service. Our waitress said around 2 words to us the entire experience and was extremely aloof. Upon paying we got the words 'five pounds' - could it have been better to say 'Hello there, is it just to pay? That will be five pounds please' Definitely need to improve customer service!
