A cut above your normal Sunday pub lunch. Excellent presentation and really tasty. Not the normal boiled veg. Very good.

Lovely food. Fantastic warm friendly greeting and service Lovely atmosphere send 10 out of ten for customer service. I would of liked a larger portion ,perhaps I should of asked for more. Would definitely visit again.

Made a reservation but when we arrived we weren't hungry so decided to order Sunday lunches to take away. Gorgeous village which deserves this wonderful village pub. Thoroughly recommend for either food or drinks the hospitality from Nikki and Neil is in abundance.

Dad and I turned up without a reservation and were very lucky to get sat down for a Sunday lunch (word of mouth brought us here!) From the minute we walked in, we were made to feel very welcome and the service was outstanding from start to finish - the staff were very friendly, polite and attentive. The food did not disappoint either! We both had the sirloin beef and it was cooked to perfection - medium rare and extremely tender! The accompanying veg, homemade Yorkshires and gravy were spot-on too! What a cracking little pub with superb food and hospitality - we’ll definitely be visiting again! Thank you :-)

We were lucky to stay near this pub on a short break to York. How a village pub should be, all the staff were friendly & welcoming, and the food was superb, I had the nicest lamb dinner ever. If you are thinking of visiting do not hesitate, you will not be disappointed. Just wish it could be our local!

Arrived without reservation and were fortunate to get a table as the landlord was soon turning people away so he could concentrate on his quiz night. Nice village pub with a community feel to it. Food was of good quality nicely cooked and well presented my soup was good and my steak cooked to my liking with nice vegetables and proper chips. Good beer the Leeds pale excellently poured and was Devine. Service was in the main good but we were starting to feel a burden as the quiz time got closer, but more than willing to give it another chance if passing but would make sure it wasn’t quiz night.

Called in on off chance early evening whilst on holiday and on way back from moors. Very welcoming landlord and lady. Nice beer, great food. Very enjoyable.

I understand pet friendly, but owners of excitable barking dogs, should take control;! Celebrating a birthday and on our first visit to the Rose and Crown, we found the service second to none, very helpful, polite and attentive to each quest. The menu offered plenty of choices and had something for everyone's taste! My husband enjoyed his pint of beer , especially the price!! Well done the Rose and Crown.

What a lovely friendly pub! 😃We enjoyed the steak night deal ( Thursday's) and our daughter had the whitby scampi, the food was perfect and the staff were all so friendly and service was awesome. Visited for a meal on a wet and windy Tuesday night. We were made very welcome on arrival, and shown to our reserved table. Our drinks order was taken promptly and we were left with menus. Some menus just seem to fit you really well, and we all took a good while in making our choices, as we could each have happily ordered several of the dishes listed. In the event, we were all well pleased with our choices, and the quality of the food and service was uniformly good. The attentiveness of the service even extended to the host warning us just how the weather conditions outside had got even worse, and to warn us that the path outside the pub would be slippy in the wet. This was our second visit to the R&C in recent weeks and we have not been able to fault a thing. I hope the young barman passed his driving test the next day!

We came here with our spaniel puppy for a Sunday lunch - the food was awesome, the staff were really friendly and down to earth (our puppy was given a bowl of chicken as well!) and we would definitely come back if we’re ever in the area again. Thanks a lot for your kind welcome!

A very warm and welcoming place. We were made to feel like friends by Nicki, Sophie and Neil. The food was fabulous, proper chips👍 the sticky toffee pudding and custard was to die for, thank you Neil for recommending it. Definitely recommend this pub if your in the area. This is a traditional pub, the staff were brilliant, considering how busy they were. The menu was spot on, just the right amount of choice, and the food all home cooked. Portions are generous, especially the child ones. My grandson ate all of his and a dessert afterwards, and he can be a bit picky. The roasts and the steak pie were all delicious and a good range of veg. Big bonus - extra gravy without having to ask! Exceptional value for what we had. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and t5he garden at the back was great. Will definitely be back

Very pleasant first visit for Sunday lunch today. Limited Sunday menu but that’s not a bad thing. Couple of roasts, chicken, pie and a couple of other options for mains. Good vegetables and gravy. Starters good too. Service wa# friendly and efficient. We will come again.

Ate here on 18th May to celebrate husband's birthday with four other friends. Had a really good night. Food was plentiful with lots of choices - just sorry I couldn't manage a pudding. Staff could not have been more friendly and obliging. Would highly recommend.

we were visiting for the weekend and needed somewhere to eat so decided to travel and pick up a takeaway from here. The lasagne was fresh and tasty and the gourmet burger was meaty, hand made, succulent and juicy. I wasn't too fussed with the chips but if they'd have offered sweet potato fries i might've enjoyed them more. Also the salad was a bit hit and miss as it was hot from my burger.If we come back to the area, i'd maybe ask for just the burger next time. Otherwise it was lovely.

Just had fish, chips & peas for two and it was absolutely delicious - lovely batter on the fish and the small pot of tartare sauce was a nice touch. Given the current lockdown, I was reticent about using a voucher that I had been given as a birthday present last year, but the lady I dealt with was so completely understanding and friendly. Very impressed.

Known the pub for 50yrs.under these extreme conditions neal and his wife and staff provide an excellent choice of 1st class food and drink. The beef curry was superb. Great people Great pub. I highly recommend it.

What a lovely place! The food was amazing staff very friendly.We had Tempura prawns & Garlic mushrooms, followed by Lamb Shank & Cottage Pie, all absolutely faultless.Loved the jugs of gravy too. We couldn’t manage pudding.... but next time A great atmosphere and super evening thank you

We visited for the first time last night, to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We had a lovely evening, and the food was delicious. We immediately liked the place - tastefully furnished, cosy but spacious - tables well spaced apart. Very warmly welcomed on arrival, and made to feel special, even though we didn’t mention until ordering our deserts that it was a special occasion - and then they brought our deserts on plates decorated with fruit coulis heart, with a complimentary small bottle of prosecco each! Will definitely go again.

We visited on a Thursday for Steak night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service, food and ambience was spot on! We thoroughly enjoyed the food and will definitely be coming back again soon, as well as recommending others.

We visited here as a family of 3 (with our 10 year old daughter) for a meal whilst on holiday in the area.Full COVID measures in place. Very friendly landlord (a real happy chappy!) who didn’t mind that we had arrived 10 minutes early for our pre-booked table (booking essential due to its popularity). Our order for drinks and food were taken quickly. We had a short wait for our food but we didn’t mind at all as it’s homemade and freshly cooked. All of the food was piping hot, generous portions and absolutely delicious. We can recommend the curry (Wednesday night is curry night), the cottage pie and the children’s macaroni cheese. We also couldn’t resist a dessert! The apple pie was “spot on” and our daughter loved the ice cream sundae from the children’s menu. The prices are a little higher than your “average” pub but this place is definitely not “average”. It’s exceptional! The fact that it’s homemade food matches the prices - it’s worth paying that little bit more when you get such amazing food and service. The waitress (Sophia?) was welcoming and attentive.

Visited on Friday evening and had the fish and chip deal £20 for 2. It was delicious, fish was perfectly cooked in a light batter. Also was an offer on for 1 free drink each. Service and staff were brilliant. Would definitely return.

Ok best dog friendly pub ever even get there own dinner. And as for us you get the warmest of welcomes and the best pie around came back 3 nights in a row very clan and safe there all so good at there jobs well done

We were looking for a pub close to the holiday park we were staying at and discovered this little gem, just a 5 minute drive away. The staff were very welcoming and polite. The menu had a great choice of meals, including those for children. The food was excellent - all freshly made. I had the chicken hanging skewer which was amazing. The children had the battered chicken which they both really enjoyed. Desserts were delicious too. A really lovely family friendly pub. We will definitely return on our next visit to Yorkshire.

Fantastic service and really lovely home cooked style meal - would certainly recommend the steak pie!! friendly for the children - went in poor weather, but it had a good garden and backs right onto a park so would think it’s great in good wealthier!!Good value for what we had too - Highly recommended!

Like the previous reviewer, this was our first meal out since the beginning of lockdown in March. Still a little apprehensive about going into centre of York we checked on Google for somewhere to eat not too far from home and we were not disappointed with our choice of the Rose and Crown.A country pub with friendly welcoming staff and a traditional pub food menu well presented and at reasonable cost best describes the Rose and Crown.Thank you for an enjoyable evening.

We had a lovely evening meal on Friday on the last day of our holiday. The staff were very friendly and attentive, even though they were clearly busy. Lots of thought had been given into safety measures with a one-way system, hand sanitisers on tables etc. The food was delicious; my husband and son both had the steak and ale pie, which they said was fantastic and very meaty. Would definately recommend.

We visited the Rose and Crown whilst caravanning nearby, partly on the recommendation of the steward where we were camping but also as it's the only pub in Sutton on the Forest!! Must say that external appearance isn't stunning, but the interior is beautifully presented. Very welcoming staff on reception when I called to view the menu, all in face masks and shields, made me sure we had chosen a good place and so it turned out. Very pleasant serving staff, excellent food, a good range of gins and a good pint. Pub offers specials night's several nights a week, we visited on Fish Friday but declined the £20.00 for 2 offer, but must say they looked enticing. As I said in the title this was our first eating out experience so we were very wary of the safety arrangements. Rose and Crown scored highly for face masks on welcome (though not on serving staff), well protected bar with quality perspex screens, excellent table spacing, track and trace contact details recorded, individual hand sanitizing on the table. All very reassuring.

What can I say, we have visited whilst on holiday in stillington for the last 2 years with our dog Oscar. We cannot fault the food or welcome we have received. Nicky is not only the chef but has made not only us welcome but also Oscar our Cockapoo. Although she is so busy in the kitchen she has taken the time to give Oscar her time and food. Staff are lovely and food is excellent, home cooked and quick service. Brilliant gluten free choices including deserts. Our dogs were welcome, so we could relax and not worry about leaving them to eat out. They were busy, but several tables were left intentionally empty, so nice spacious environment, one way systems, screens, visors...basically everything you expect to make you feel comfortable in these times

Lovely visit to the Rose & Crown yesterday. Got the chance to sit in the garden to eat due to the lovely weather. Decor is really nice and staff were very welcoming. Garden area is great with connection to a playing field behind which is perfect for the kids to burn off some energy! Food was really good, the chicken skewers were delicious. Portion sizes were great and everyone enjoyed their meals. Very Covid safe which brought only downside of needing to visit the bar to get drinks each time rather than table service. Definitely worth a visit!

The staff were friendly and passionate about their produce. They served a great Sunday lunch, even giving us the option to have pie as well as the traditional meat. The yorkies were huge and tasty, the extra gravy was delicious and finished it off a treat. The garden was beautiful with spaced out tables too.

We had a takeaway last week from here and it was delicious! Friendly service and lovely home cooked food. We went to collect it but found they also do delivery. We chatted to the owner (presumed) and all the safety measures which he is putting in place and it all sounded well thought out and very safe. We can’t wait to enjoy their garden, it looked so lovely! We will be back :-)

After looking for somewhere new to go out for dinner with our 2 young children (7 & 4), this pub is only a 5 minute drive from where we live, yet never been there for a meal. Staff were extremely friendly and wonderful with our 2 children from the off. There was a lot of choice on the menu and it was difficult to decide what to get as it all sounded lovely (good options for kids too). We were not disappointed, the food was delicious! I can’t believe this lovely place has been so close and we’ve not been there before. With what is going on in the world right now, it was nice to see that this place was still busy. Great testament to the owners. Certainly will not be our last visit. Looking forward to visiting again very soon.

Attended a birthday party on 7th March 2020. The food and entertainment were excellent. Well organised. A great night was had by all. Highly recommend this friendly local pub / restaurant.

Booked here for Sunday lunch and certainly weren't disappointed. All staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. My husband and I both had soup to start followed by Sunday lunch... All food was perfectly cooked and tasted great! One of the best Sunday lunches we have had. We will certainly return sometime soon!

Very good meal. Dont eat before you go! I had the hanging surf and turf and my boyfriend the steak. The chips were excellent and the onion rings were not greasy. Service was excellent, very attentive. Will definitely come back.

We had kids, dogs, the elderly!!! Didn't try the food but the menu looks delicious! Had coffee and some real ale! Played snooker/pool (I don't know the difference) and felt very welcome by the owners. Lovely pub!

Fourteen of us in a rambling group were booked in for lunch following a ramble around the villages of Huby and Sutton-on-Forest. We received a warm welcome from the landlords Neil and Nikki as we were escorted to our reserved tables. Within twenty minutes we had all been served our beautifully presented dishes of food. A mixed order from the lunch time menu, everyone of us delighted with the quality and quantity. Attentively served by Neil, ever polite and humorous, whilst Nikki tended to the kitchen duties. Everyone was delighted with the pub lunch. If you have not yet visited, do so, you will not be disappointed.

We were staying locally and could only get to visit at a lunchtime. A lovely country pub with a very small lunch menu which suited perfectly. Delicious lunch, comfortable ambiance and friendly, fun and entertaining owners. Proper Yorkshire hospitality. Only wish we could have returned for evening meal. Dog friendly too, massive bonus to us.

I came with family for the steak night and I have to say it exceeded expectations.The whitebait to start was lovely. The steak it’s self was cooked to perfection. The chunky fries were fantastic as were the onion rings. Have to recommend the salad, fresh and a lovely sauce. I’m never tempted with a dessert but on seeing bread and butter pudding I had to have one. Great service and friendly staff, will be back again soon. Thank you.

Yorkshire puddings were dried out as was the beef. The rest of the main course was acceptable. Drinks were overpriced - including a pint of orange juice and lemonade for which we were charged £5!

If you want a good value night out, there's non better then The Rose and Crown on Thursday's steak night. Twenty five quid for two inclusive of a bottle of good wine can't be bad. Quality and quantity with a warm welcome from the landlord. We have been twice in the past month and it has been great on each occasion.

After a hard day lifting up floorboards, we decided to go out to eat. Looked at reviews on TripAdvisor and so glad we called in here. Warm , friendly greeting, shown straight to a table by the landlord. Had steak night £25 for two (sauce is extra)including a bottle of wine , red, white or Rose. Hubby was designated driver so I had a couple of glasses of Rose’, lovely Zinfandel and was able to bring remainder of my wine home with me. Rump steak cut easily and melted in your mouth. Served with onion rings, which I actually wouldn’t have next time, nice but would have preferred an extra mushroom, a mushroom, three tomatoes from the vine,wonderfully cooked cabbage, carrots and parsnip, served with either new potatoes or proper homemade fat chips. Saw on the menu board they have Wednesday curry night and fishy Friday. Will definitely be making our way here again. They also have a full menu with lots of other food choices. Hubby had sponge pudding and custard, said it was very light not stodgy at all. I had meringue and fruit compote and dairy free ice cream. Which I have never had before and was lovely. We have visited the Rose and Crown quite a few times and have never been disappointed with the food or the service, our last visit was on a Thursday which is steak night, 2 steaks with chips and homemade beer battered onion rings and a choice of salad or veg AND a bottle of wine all for £25, everything was cooked as we asked and tasted lovely, the Landlord Neil is a friendly and attentive host. Well worth a visit

What can I say but Brilliant! Booked a meal for 6 for my husband's 70th Birthday whilst stopping at nearby Goosewood Park. We were advised if we rang the pub someone would pick us up and drop us back. Neil the landlord did just that. What a lovely friendly place and there was an artist on so the atmosphere was great and we all joined in singing. The bonus was the food was great as well Hope we get to return when we visit the area again,

Visited The Rose and Crown for a meal with friends food was a little slow arriving after ordering but the quality was good so no real problem.

Fantastic service, we needed to change our reservation twice, this was no trouble at all for them. More than happy to help and look after us.

We were delighted when we made our first visit to the Rose and Crown. The food was excellent, the environment was/is cool and comfortable and we felt welcome. The quantity of food was very generous but our rather ancient appetites could not manage it all.

Lovely place with great atmosphere. The food was very good and brilliant service. Our children were made very welcome. The landlord looked after us very well, even picking us up from the local holiday park and returning us back - thank you Neil for making our weekend very memorable and one we won’t forget in a hurry.

We are 3 couples who were up for my birthday weekend. The pub is lovely and friendly and the Sunday lunch was one of the best I've ever tasted. The staff are really pleasant. If we are up around the area again we will definately visit again.

We are renting a holiday cottage in the village and wanted a lunch for our group on a rainy Saturday. The landlord was so welcoming and excellent with the children in the group in particular. He made sure we had bus timetables before leaving. The lunch menu is a standard lunch menu but really nicely done. In particular the ploughman’s was very generous and came with 3 cheeses. Im sure there are a lot of nice pubs in little Yorkshire villages but would recommend this one because the people running it were so lovely.

On a weekend trip staying just outside York our group of 6 arrived here for a meal - had not booked but luckily there was a table available and the host immediately made us feel very welcome. Service was excellent, food delicious and good old fashioned hospitality made it a fantastic experience.

Last night we held a joint birthday party at the Rose and Crown what an amazing night, everything was perfect! The food, the staff, the entertainment , the service was first class! Would highly recommend.

We were staying in the area and were so impressed with our lunchtime visit that we booked for their Thursday evening steak special. we were not disappointed. It ticked every box- excellent steak cooked to perfection, served with great chips, onion rings and vegetables and washed down with a beautiful Rioja. Unbelievable quality and value at £25. The service was faultless and the owners are welcoming and professional. All in all one a great meal and service.

What a delightful find. Food was really good, but what stood out was the staff, very accommodating, funny and treated us all as we were a hen party stopping off for lunch after a scavenger hunt. Very glad we went x

Our club organised a rideout and evening meal. As usual the British weather was a bit wet. We got there and the owners couldn’t have been more accommodating. They even organised an area for our wet stuff to go. Service was excellent , but the food here is really outstanding. Our motorcycle club the Elite which has 270 members. Will be certainly calling back in. Though not all at once lol. I can’t recommend high enough. Was a great evening with great food.

We decided to eat at the Rose and Crown after visiting Sutton Park nearby, which is also well worth a look. Although we were slightly early and arrived before the official opening time, we were given a warm welcome and shown to a table in the garden (it was a warm day). We happened to visit on a Thursday which is the steak night, so we chose the 2 steaks plus house wine for £25. I was surprised to be given a choice of several red wines from which I chose the Malbec, which was very good. The steaks were thick and juicy and perfectly cooked, as were the vegetables and the 'trimmings' and I was even given a choice of chips, mash or skinny fries. The service was quick and attentive and the staff, including the landlord and his wife, very friendly and accommodating. I can thoroughly recommend this pub/restaurant!

Great food and excellent service from our hosts. We enjoyed the Thursday steak offer and our 4 year old had the kids fish and chips (proper piece of cod not processed). We ate in the light airy conservatory overlooking the nice garden (next to a good kids play area). Would highly recommend for good pub food and genuine hospitality.

We went here as we staying at Thrush Nest Cottages,which are half a mile away. The food was lovely. We the steak & ale pie and off the special menu apple & pork sausages and mash. Really delicious. They were both around £14 so a bit pricey,but really good quality ingredients and tasty. Attentive and friendly staff,so all round would definitely recommend.

We have always been overwhelmed at the service, food and atmosphere at the R & C. From the minute you walk in you are made to feel so welcome and made to feel like one of the locals. The food always impresses which is a testament to the chef and all involved. This is why we keep coming back time and time again.

Lovely local pub, very dog friendly, willow felt very at home! lovely fresh cooked food, (pic of kids meal) log burner, friendly staff, free WiFi a must visit if in the area! They pick up and drop off people from the local caravan park I understand, Altho so far not used the service! Excellent all round!

From the minute we set foot in the bar, to the time we left we were made to feel very welcome. Staff greeted us with a friendly smile, and nothing was too much trouble. The menu is varied and suits most tastes, and the food was to die for. The mix of customers was multi generational and all were friendly. This Pub seems to be a centre of life for the village and hosts quiz nights, and communal activities.

Had a meal with my partner and a couple of friends. I had a starter of whitebait which were good. For the main course I plumped for the hanging chicken kebab. 2 large kebabs which were well cooked with vegetables in between the chicken. Served with handmade chips and dressed salad. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough sauce with the kebab.

Very friendly welcome from the hosts. Wheelchair accessible. Great menu, much of which is available gluten free. Dogs very welcome, in fact little Wilf was provided with a rug to sit on, his own bowl of fresh water and when our meals arrived, his own bowl of complimentary chicken! Meals fantastic and great value. Will definitely return soon. Highly recommended.

This is the first time visiting for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent and desserts to die for. Service good. Very friendly staff will definitely be returning some time in the future.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here with my sister and brother in law who were staying for a few days. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was beautifully cooked and served to order. There was a very pleasant atmosphere and we were treated like old friends. Highly recommended.

From the moment you step into the pub you are greeted by the staff or by Neil or nikki who all make you instantly welcome.

What a fantastic evening. We tried this after a glowing recommendation of friends. We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding, the service was flawless. Despite this being our first visit we were made to feel welcomed and greeted like we had been going there for years.

Called here on spec having been close by - arrived early doors but given a very friendly welcome- informed that a Thursday was Steak Night - so we both took advantage of a very good offer - 2 Steaks & a bottle of wine -£25 - excellent deal - steaks cooked perfectly, very tasty & great accomplishments - onion rings, chips & roasted veggies - definitely worth a visit- as there very early unable to comment on atmosphere etc as the only ones in the pub at the time but a warm friendly welcome & good food are an excellent reason to visit.

First class lunch - beautifully cooked roast beef; not overcooked! Tasty veg, superb Yorkshire pud and lashings of gravy. Served quickly with a smile. Very dog friendly pub,with water & a bowl of beef for the dog and a log fire to lay in front of. Would have loved a dessert but too full after my main course.

Four of us went for a meal last Saturday and what a lovely meal it was. The welcome was warm, the drinks were good and the food was excellent. Added to this the price was very reasonable, it is somewhere we are happy to recommend and a place we shall be returning to.

This is a great local pub, doing extremely good food, and providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike enjoy well-kept beer and a wide variety of spirits, including locally-distilled gin.

We had a lovely meal at the Rose and Crown. The pub was warm and welcoming.... the customer service was second to none, nothing was too much trouble and the team went over and above to help us. We had two newborn babies and a dog so had our hands full!

We booked for a family Sunday lunch with Hector our assistance dog and were made to feel very welcome by all of the staff. The service was exceptional throughout our visit. There was an excellent choice from the menu and as we had two elderly Great Grandmas in our party with not enormous appetites they were both offered the choice of a smaller portion sizes. This was very much appreciated and we all enjoyed scrumptious desserts after a fantastic Sunday roast dinner. A first time visit but certainly not our last and we look forward ti visiting again with family and friends in the very near future.

Entering the Rose & Crown you would be forgiven for thinking this was just a well supported village pub, but venturing into the dining area, you will experience a very much elevated dining enjoyment. Welcoming Staff, comfortable seating and good quality, plentiful food - but these are unadventurous dishes (beautifully presented) and underline the fact that the menu is "Pub Grub" - saying that we shall return!!!
