Friendly atmosphere, friendly customers, a great village pub

Owners must update Google page to show that they do not serve food anymore. This is misleading for people searching for places to eat.

We parked our camper van in the car park and stayed the night, great location for the caves, within walking distance, and very quiet night, even though they were busy with customers. We phoned ahead to check that they had space for us and spoke to Becky, who was very welcoming. When we arrived we let the staff know that we had arrived, they were expecting us and also made us very welcome. Currently they do not have a restaurant, but we did have a drink. It was Becky's night off, but she did deliver sandwiches for the darts teams and made a point of coming to speak to us and again made us feel very welcome. Hope you enjoyed your wine Becky. We would definitely recommend staying here if you have a small motor home or camper van, and hope to return again.

Having had a meal there a couple of years ago, on our way to holiday in Devon, we thought it would be nice to stop off and have a meal and a few drinks because we enjoyed it so much the last time. I rang a few times to try and make a reservation and when I finally got an answer, I asked if I could book a table. The male who answered the phone told me very abruptly, ignorantly and in no uncertain terms that they had not done food since last August. Not having been down there for a couple of years, I wasn’t aware of that and there is no mention of it on their Facebook page that they no longer did food. But there is still a page showing their menu ! Because of the way I was spoken to, I won’t darken their doorstep as we were considering calling for a few drinks but having been spoken to the way I was, I very much doubt it. I would be interested if I got any response to this post !

Visit this pub twice in the week we were staying in cheddar, Great friendly pub, of the Beaten track but had peroni a very good pint I might add, very clean place and staff very welcoming, would return when visiting cheddar again !

A few pints sat in the sunny beer garden.....what could be better. Good - and friendly - service at the bar.

Only drinks ATM, welcoming to motorhomes (£10 per night) quiet.

The pub looked great, but we wanted food and they don’t serve after 7pm They recommended the White Hart

Does not serve food anymore so owner should update this for accuracy on their page here for people visiting cheddar, so 3 stars because of accuracy of reviews. However the pub has lots of character, dart boards, comfortable sofas and the staff were lovely, had an open mic, seems like a lovely local pub just serving drinks.

Not serving food anymore, such a shame as was a really great food venue. My earlier one star review re this pub was specifically attached only to the criteria relating to food provision, but agree that didn't present clearly i.e. not serving lovely food like the last time I stopped off (now a pub only, so it has changed in character). It was not a general comment on service or atmosphere - as just a pub I am sure it is fine for drinks, usual footie TV and pool table

Only went for a couple of drinks and to pick up a mate ,it been a long time since i was there last , the pub has change some much and it is a great pub .great seeing some old friends there too

Every was top notch from check in to checkout. Very quiet during our stay and throughly enjoyed the breakfast I would definitely stay again anytime I am in the vicinity. Highly recommend

Stayed at the Locust Groove location on our way south. Hotel is very pet friendly and the rooms are super clean. Breakfast was served hot and included biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, two types sausages and other assorted breakfast items.

We turned up in our Motorhome and hadn’t booked, but a lovely lady said we could stay the night! Unfortunately we picked a night when they weren’t cooking, but had a few drinks in a very pleasant beer garden. We walked into cheddar and picked up a Chinese takeaway, which was lovely. Thank you for letting us stay we will be back for the food! X great place!

Popped here for lunch and was blown away by the food. Had the seafood platter, it was epic. Staff were very friendly, the chef is a genius.

We came here after working in the area. Rang ahead to see if we could book a table and stay in our campervan for the night which wasn't a problem. Lovely local pub with the most amazing restaurant food. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the food was some of the best we've had. I had the Thai mussel and Monkfish curry.. Wonderful! Paul had the rib eye and it was cooked just as he asked! Fantastic chef (s) We will definitely be back if in the area. Thank you!

The best Sunday dinner I have had when dining out in a very long time. Plenty of food and a nothing was too much trouble for the staff. I shall be having a return trip

An ordinary looking pub but with extraordinary food - exceptionally good. Highly recommended.

This Pub was an absolute gem. Very dog friendly - we turned up with 3 large dogs and it was no issue, the staff were happy to fuss them. Staff were so friendly, service was great. Food was incredible!! I'm also Gluten free and they will adjust almost everything on their menu to a GF option, the bread I had with my starter was the best gluten free bread I've tasted in the 16 years I've been GF. Will definaltely be back. Thank you!

Sunday lunch - what a stunning meal! Beautiful meat and a selection of superb vegetable dishes - everything cooked to perfection and so tasty! We didn't even have to ask for an extra jug of gravy, it was brought out with all the veg. Before we left I booked Sunday lunch for the whole family in a week or two. Delicious!!

Arrived Thursday went for a drink in bar lovely staff and decided to book for food following evening. Greeted on arrival shown to table served drink straight away menu and specials board plenty to choose ordered starters and mains. Absolutely fantastic food flavours and size portion was excellent value for money! Rebooked for tomorrow evening another meal! Gem of a pub defo worth a visit you won’t be disappointed! This is the best pub food in Cheddar by a long way , its a bit of a walk out of the village but we'll worth it. All cooked to order , fish and chips were lovely and fresh

5 Min walk from the chaos that is Chedder Gourge. Nice and quiet, with outdoor seating front and back. Simple sandwich menu but good us well done.

Quite simply, by a country mile, the best food in the area, superb food, great value. All delivered by the accommodating, helpful and friendly hosts! No hesitation in giving this place a 5 star review! As a local I’d like to keep it a secret, but food this good has to be shared.

I've had Sunday lunch here twice in recent weeks and the food was staggering good!!!!!

We visited this pub for the first time and had a reserved table for Sunday lunch. 2 had the roast sirloin of beef and 1 had the chicken, these were accompanied by a good selection of vegetables which you could help yourselves to they included; roast potatoes, roasted honey glazed parsnips and carrots, shredded leek and cabbage, red cabbage, cauliflower cheese all were cooked to perfection, plus a gravyboat of rich meaty gravy. The main meal was exquisite and everthing was piping hot !!!! Of course we couldn't resist, trying some of the desserts out. 1 had three scoops of ice cream various flavours, all of which were nice and creamy snd full of flavour; 1 had Chocolate brownie with white chocolate sauce and a scoop of ice cream, this was truly delicious; 1 had passion fruit panna cotta with raspberries and a coulis, this was light creamy and full of beautiful fruit flavours. Too be honest the whole meal was gorgeous and value for money. The table service was friendly, polite and efficient. I would recommend that you book a table, they seem rather busy on Sundays and I can understand why!!! A definite 5 🌟 strars, highly recommended.

Went to the pub down the road and wasn’t serving food…. So thought what to do…. Drive down a bit further and our saviour The Gardeners Arms was there with a great welcome from all the staff super friendly helpful. Covid aware, scan app and order great idea. Although it was a Sunday, we didn’t fancy a Sunday roast, but OMG so pleased we did my photo doesn’t do it justice, it was - - Superb local produce. - So tasty, moist not dry. - A little thing I have to always ask for is an extra pot of gravy and your sat waiting whilst dinner goes cold….. Nope got it covered comes out at same time 👍 - Very big but no quality lost. - Best roast I’ve had, but don’t tell the wife 😂 Don’t drive past drive in !! Enjoy 😉

My wife and I had a meal here on Saturday. The food was superb, my steak was cooked perfectly and the chips were to die for!! Amazjng staff and landlady too. I'd definitely give this place a visit

A lovely pub that's tucked away from the main village. Food is absolutely top notch so good I ate there twice. Friendly staff and good service. I will most likely visit this place when I come back to visit Cheddar again.

Sunday roast was out of this world and the service was second to none they deserved a big tip all 9 of us was happy a few weeks ago

We had a lovely meal at the pub- we both had the specials and they really did feel like special meals with generous portions and nice presentation. We found the pub was quite busy so we decided to move into the bar area for drinks afterwards to avoid the business of the main restaurant area The pub was friendly and welcoming- we were very happy with this find!

We were a group of 9 and had a wonderful meal at the gardeners arms. Service was fabulous even phoebe on her first night was excellent. A very welcoming and accommodating pub serving excellent fresh food. A little treasure on the outskirts of Cheddar village, would highly recommend

We had such a lovely experience at The Gardeners Arms, staff were polite, professional, and friendly. The service was great as well. We were in quite a large group, so we sat outside. The food was just excellent, well presented, delicious and plenty of it! I'd definitely recommend it!

After walking the gorge, we knew our large group would need a good meal, but didn't know if the pub would accommodate us, I rang ahead and they were so lovely! We arrived and they had laid out a long table in the sunny beer garden for us. Service was speedy, friendly and excellent. The food was absolutely incredible, a good selection, well presented and full of flavour. The chunky chips were so crispy and everything was evidently fresh. They brought out the kids meals first which was really appreciated and they were happy to add to the order when we realised we needed more of the delicious onion rings! The loos were super clean and lovely, and the whole place was well kept and welcoming. So glad we went there, we would holiday in Somerset again just to make a return visit! Just a short 8 min walk from the main gorge shops etc and so worth it. A real hidden gem.

We arrived just as they were stopping serving food for the evening, 8.30pm. The staff were brilliant - welcoming us in and asking the kitchen to stay open a little longer to fit us in. Really impressed with the quality of the food.

Great village pub with good food and drinks menu

Booked a table based on reviews. Staff were pleasant and the place was cool even on a day with 30 degree heat. Menu is limited but the food was very nice and reasonable for the area. There is plenty of parking at the rear and a decent beer garden. Overall very pleased indeed

A very lovely welcome, a small menu but the food that we had was amazingly good, my husband had a steak and he was very impressed. Would highly recommend it.

I phoned ahead out of courteousy. Set in a lovely village and a 5 minute walk to Cheddar. Parked up in carpark for day and night. Staff more than welcoming and friendly. Had evening meal which was excellent. Decor fresh and modern but still maintaining the old world feel. Highly recommend to motorhomers as stop over. Please use facilities. Well worth a full belly!!

We were told about The Gardeners from the owner of our B & B, as it is a little off the beaten track & we wouldn't have found it. Received a very warm welcome & it was great to see groups of people chatting away - like pubs used to be. Went the following night to eat & the food was plentiful & full of flavour. Highly recommend the mussels ! If you visit Cheddar it is worth hunting it out

Excellent food at a pub restaurant away from the main centre of Cheddar.Very nice friendly waitress & good service.We turned up without a reservation and were lucky to be seated, the only table available was outside, but being a sunny evening that was good.I’d recommend that you book ahead.Well worth seeking out.

We arrived having not booked but the staff were very accommodating in finding us a table and fitting our order in between some large groups. I had the chicken Caesar salad which was very good. Lots of moist chicken with crispy croutons. Really enjoyed it. My wife had mussels in cream sauce which she ate in silence which is always a good sign that the food is good. No complaints and we would both recommend a visit.

The revamped Gardener's Arms is now the best pub to eat out in Cheddar. I was impressed by the pleasant, happy atmosphere, the good food & friendly service.

What a fabulous meal we had ,on Holliday four of us, if any of us had to be picky we honestly cudnt find one. Would definitely go cheddar again and would definitely recommend and revist to have a meal here.

Family lunch with 4 generations of family. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful as we had a couple of non menu requests. Portions were massive and all the meals were delicious. Pub has a ice garden. Great venue for a traditional pub lunch.

We visited yesterday as a group of 8 with 4 young children. We were on holiday so chose this based on reviews only. They reviews were right and we are so pleased we visited. On arrival the staff were so friendly and accommodating. We sat outside and the children loved running around in the beer garden. The food we ordered was absolutely delicious. We ordered mussels, fish goujons and fish and chips while the children had Ham, Egg and chips. It was all well presented and very tasty. Would definitely recommend.

We stayed in the pub car park in our motorhome, you can stay for free when you eat in the pub. Really welcoming and lovely owner and staff, fantastic food and only a short walk down to the Gorge. Even let us use his water and facilities. Highly recommend!

After a long walk along Cheddar Gorge we were delighted to walk past all the High Street cafes/restaurants to eat at The Gardener's Arms, tucked away down a side street. Delicious food, generous portions without being wasteful. Great ambiance helped by the pub's choice of background music, liked by us all aged 16 - 54!Well worth a visit.

Stayed in Cheddar for a few days and tried this pub. Very friendly staff and very light and airy pub. Food was great as was beer well keeped. It's a great friendly pub that you must try. Ring to book as gets very busy

Same comments as last review as we were together. Didn’t get to see any starter or desert menus as these were not offered. Never got offered a wine list to review.At our table all we could here were the staff talking about how they were going to have their nails done and what nail varnish to use. There must be some work that needs to be done.

Having seen the high ratings of this pub on trip advisor I booked it while we were visiting Cheddar. First impressions no one way system staff were not wearing masks, 1 I saw had an exemption lanyard, no other staff did. The waitress was still in training and was really lovely. We ordered the nibbles to start and they were very nice but the bread was covered in pepper!! The goats cheese burger was amazing but the chips had to go back as covered in pepper and either paprika or chilli powder. The eggs for the ham egg and chips covered in pepper. The special of the night the plaice was also covered in pepper. I think people should be asked if that much pepper is going to be used and also an explanation about why the staff were not wearing masks.

We went here for the first time on 21.5.21 in the evening 6 of us for family meal each ordered different food it was excellent steak was cooked to perfection as was the lamb and service could not of been better very welcoming We will be returning very soon can’t wait to try the Sunday lunch

Visited on a Saturday afternoon when it was busy. Small seating area to the rear, thankfully we had booked. Staff were very friendly, my girlfriend ordered the curry not something she would normally do at a pub, but I have to say it was very good and the prices were reasonable. Just surprised none of the staff wore masks.

Was given a table at the front of the pub where it was peaceful. I had fish and chips; partner had the burger. Was so so tasty and staff were friendly, polite and attentive. Would recommend and would go back.

Fully refurbished, service excellent, food the best in Cheddar, separate bar with big screen for sports. Nice seating area outside at the rear. Great pub.

If you want excellent food, cosy pub atmosphere and great service, this is the place to be in Cheddar. We enjoyed a beautifully cooked plaice, tender burgers and a generous and tasty fish platter. Definitely worth a visit and great value.

Having been to cheddar a couple of times we exhausted the cafes and restaurants in the main areas, stumbled across this pub which is still a very short walk from the main village and what a gem, amazing and very varied menu choice, friendly staff and recently refurbished to an amazing standard. We booked to come again the next day when we left. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We visited the Gardeners Arms for Sunday lunch after a quick search on trip advisor. The food and service were both fantastic, and the prices very reasonable considering their high standards. Highly recommended.

I like to eat Sunday lunch out. Today, at the newly refurbished Gardeners Arms, I had the best roast, veggies, etc ever. You won't get a better Sunday lunch. The staff are nice and friendly and of course we'll be back.

Excellent food and service. Such a delicious meal in a gorgeous restaurant. Totally recommend this place. We visited with our boys for a lovely family meal, it would also be fabulous as an adults only evening.

We hadn't booked and were chancing it by rocking up on a Sunday around 1pm! We were seated amongst the other diners in the restaurant area. Very happy customers and would highly recommend.

We have been a couple of times with neighbours also New Year day breakfast !! each time food very good and Landlady and staff brilliant welcome each time. Nice pint also.

Entered pub to have Neal to be net by underage children being served ... and offered cocaine in her toilet !! Do not eat there - landlady was fuming when I told her if the drug issue - asked me to leave - reported to brewery and police

Took my kids and grandkids here for Sunday lunch while we were staying locally in a lodge. Lovely walk to it along quiet country roads and when you get there the landlady is really welcoming.Shed had a power cut the evening before so the card machine wasn't working and I had no cash so she let us open a tab and I paid the bills by BACS when wed finished.The meal was fantastic, home cooked and huge. My grandkids are all below 5 and there was no issue with them being kids as you get in some places.. knocked over water and the odd spud on the floor was quickly cleared with no fuss.The whole experience set us up for a lovely walk around cheddar gorge in the afternoon.Thanks for you hospitality.

Excellent pub!Perfect spot for a post-walk meal. Very friendly, non-pretentious atmosphere. Drinks were lovely, I had a beer and my girlfriend had the house red - both surpassed expectations. Food was 10/10! Hunter’s Chicken has loads of Brie and Cramberry, and they didn’t mind me switching from New Potatoes to Chips. Steak was good, Stilton sauce was delightful. The pub is a bit out of the way so happy to review it so it gets some more attention.

Called in here for an early evening meal and really enjoyed the food. Not many dining but probably because it was so early (5pm), the staff seemed to move between bar and kitchen but the chef definitely knows how to cook a great steak. I had fish and chips and other half had surf and turf. My fish was immense, overhanging the plate both sides......delicious. One small improvement would be to replace the use of paper tablecloths with place mats (even paper ones) as the paper cloths don’t look very appealing.

My boyfriend and I came for his birthday, as we were staying in the lodges just up the road. We received such a warm welcome from Linda the owner, which was accompanied by some amazing food and great service. A real classic English pub - would recommend to anyone.

It looks lkike an ordinary pub, and the menu looks like ordinary pub grub, but the quality of the food is exceptional. We were impressed that the chef came out to find out if we were happy with the meals, and was genuinely interested.Recommended.

We had hoped eat here tonight but after seeing cash only sign on front door went to cash point and returned .went thru the back lounge door where restaurant was in semi darkness and noone there. Waited by bar for owner to spot us but was chatting to customer who had seen us but after waiting few minutes we decided go elsewhere .had hoped to try out the meals as reviews seemed good but doubt anyone knew we had arrived .can't say anything about food as didn't stay.

Brilliant place, really friendly and genuine staff with a cosy relaxed atmosphere. My partner had the Sunday roast which was really generously sized, with proper decent cooked food, he was very impressed and we're very pleased we wondered up the hill instead of the carvery in the main village part. All you could ask for in a pub ☺
