I called in as I had heard so much about the breakfasts here cooked by Kara’s Kitchen. The whole breakfast arrived promptly from being ordered. It is simply the best breakfast in Retford. The hash browns were delicious and homemade. All the ingredients to the breakfast are very high quality. For £9.50 for an English breakfast with tea and coffee a £1.00 extra, it is excellent value for money. The staff are extremely warm and welcoming and I look forward to many more breakfasts here.

After seeing this pub go from one chef to another and do one breakfast menu bring after another, they seemed to just be the average pub breakfast. BUT NOT ANYMORE! Kara’s Kitchen is now occupying the kitchen and WWOW is the only way to describe the food. With her street food stall under her belt and winning awards every year, she has gone to town on transforming the Galway arms from the average pub breakfast to now a “book early order miss out” as it is by far the best breakfast in Retford town! And they also sunday dinners which are amazing!

During a short break in Retford (nice place) we sampled several pubs and, if you add up all essential positive requirements for a pub, the Galway Arms probably came out top. It is a non-trendy pub. But it is smart and up to date. The decor and furnishings are simple and understated, yet it is very smart. It does food but doesn’t try to be a gastro-pub. It has a regular clientele and feels like a true local pub. Beer was good and service likewise. And another bonus - despite the name, it isn’t one of those awful Irish pubs! In short - nothing not to like - really good pub.

Im currently in touch with bassetlaw trading standards and licence for discrimination and not following covid guidelines and standing directly next to customers...

I LOVE this pub! In a world of modern bars and generic 'gastro' pubs The Galway Arms has remained true and nowadays it is one of the only 'proper' pubs left in Retford which in itself makes it a rather special place. On a Saturday and Sunday you can get the very best brekkie for miles around (in my opinion). Choosing either full English or full Scottish as well as other options, the price is very reasonable and the portions very generous but most crucially of all the quality of the ingredients is top notch and you can literally 'taste the difference' (sorry Sainsbury's! 👀😆). Good beer; on draught or otherwise and a great atmosphere with live music a regular occurrence as well as numerous large and smaller screens broadcasting sports. Outdoors there's a pleasant and well maintained patio and smoking area including under cover areas and snug, comfortable seating with heaters as well as plenty of parking available. What's not to love? I'd give it more than five stars if I could!

Ordered some food there to find out me and my friend didn’t even get half of what we asked for and the chef actually came out to actually argue with us as if we were wrong and read what we ordered which was correct and then she stormed off! Honestly worst thing I’ve witnessed! Apparently she’s done this a few times as well.I do have to admit the young barmaid was helpful as she offered us all a refund because of her attitude. We didn’t take the refund but it was a very nice offer! The food that was then brought after was all cold and I didn’t even trust the sausages!

What a wonderful experience, everyone was so excited when I visited AT FIRST. There was singing apparently someone was parcelling up a round piece of sports apparatus and then it was being sent back to its place of origin. That was up to about 2100hours then it seemed the package wasn't being sent back to its point of ORIGIN. If indeed it was coming home then someone should have notified the residents of Partick in Glasgow which is in fact the home of what the excited masses were singing about.

The Galway Arms is already well known for live sessions and their excellent breakfast. We decided to hold my granddaughters baby shower there, with the two godmothers doing the arranging of the function. The landlord was spoken to about the date, food and the area required for guests. It was promptly forgotten about with various holidays and other commitments taking place. A few days before the event it was at last remembered and the landlord consorted with apologies. Luckily he was great and didn’t see any problems with the late confirmation. The food was an excellent array of various sandwiches and half rolls, variety of quiches, sausage rolls, pork pies. pasta and chicken bites were complemented by coleslaw, potatoes salad and dishes of olives with sun dried tomatoes and feta sides completed the scene. We had already said we would be bringing the cakes with us or they would have supplied those as well. The usual forks and paper plate and condiments were also supplied. The food was well made and well presented certainly to keep any guests happy as ours were. Drinks are available at the bar and as usual have a great variety to offer sometimes missing in private areas with table bars. I would highly recommend you try the Galway for a private function and indeed just for a visit or to sit in the delightful outdoor area. The landlord and his staff were extremely welcoming and helpful making for a stress free event. We will go back again for our next planned event. When you find a gem like this on your doorstep you need to use it.

After seeing the quality of the food in the photos and hearing it is a popular place, I decided to book in on bonfire night. There were me, my wife and 2 children. For starter me and my eldest ordered the scotch egg. I've never ordered a scotch egg before so didn't really know what to expect, but a dry egg and over cooked outer coating crunchier than a pork scratching wasn't what I expected for just short of a 10a each! The wife ordered camembert cheese with chilly dip and bread/toast. I'll be honest, it was quite pleasant to eat when you found the chilly dip amongst the cheese but other than that I suppose it's an acquired taste, like marmite, you either love it or hate it. The bread/toast though was that dry and hard, I'm sure Cemex would have been happy to supply it to persimmon builders as footings. The youngest ordered cheese garlic bread, he's 4, they forgot it! If any of you have children around this age you would know that, when everyone is eating and they're not, they produce words/noises that haven't been heard since Mr blobby was on the tele. After prompting, they finally brought the cheese garlic bread, it was one piece of sliced bread with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese which hadn't even been melted, and cost around £4. We're talking professional chefs that can't melt cheese. We sat for half an hour to be asked what we we were waiting for, obviously we were waiting for our mains. It felt like we were being pushed out. So the mains. I had chicken and chorizo gnocchi. chicken thigh, on top of gnocchi in a sauce, with chorizo pieces. chicken thigh was brilliant, nice and juicy, crispy skin, nice! The rest of it was so, so salty it would have been more enjoyable to drink from the Atlantic. It got left... My eldest had bacon steak, he left that as it had more fat than Gemma collins. The wife had a chicken burger, I mean, you can't mess it up, can you? Well...the bread bun, which hadn't been toasted by the way, was that dry and crumbly it could have been mistaken for your grandparents slipper. I folded it in half and it broke and turned to crumbs! The burger itself tasted off, and probably worse than the slipper...it got left also. The youngest had mac and cheese, there would have been more taste in that fore mentioned slipper. Bad, bad experience!! Maybe the fireworks were to blame, and they were too busy, but if that was the case, I personally would have shut this side of the restaurant for the night. The bill came to £130. So make of that what you will for that type of food, and messed up the complete order from start to finish. They knocked of £60 as an acceptance of the poor experience we'd had. So still cost £80 for meals that never got eaten. Honestly, I like to give the benefit of the doubt, but this took the biscuit, so won't be getting another visit.
