Came for lunch in the middle of the week so it was pretty quiet, food was okay and staff nice. I would go again if I needed a hot meal whilst in the village

Lovely carvery with the family today in this great country pub. Carvery was well presented, hot and tasted lovely. Absolutely amazing deserts, which made the meal relaxing. Would we go again, yes we would as we’re looking at going for an evening meal and trying one of their specials.

The Carvery has changed so much since the current owners have taken over and it’s become amazing and tasty again. When the new owners first took over the friendly spirit the Sunday carvery’s was really nice but then all of a sudden it started to go down hill, so we stopped coming for our Sunday lunch due to this. A friend told us how tasteful and amazing your Sunday carvery’s was - so with a lot of hesitation we chose to give it another try. All I can say is we will definitely be back again!!

Ordered a takeaway roast and wow it was beautiful, so much too, the meat just fell apart Also had a desert and was so tasty, we definitely will be back Staff where so friendly and helpful Overall a brilliant experience

Fantastic Pub. Car park is a bit tricky to find at night but it's a safe place away from the road.

Wonderful venue, lovely atmosphere and excellent food. Nothing was too much trouble.

They made me a special main meal....my favourite prawn cocktail salad and chips. Thank you it was delicious 😋

Went for lunch as a four the other day and sat outside on the benches. We found the food to be really good and in decent portions. Great selection of drinks and the staff were helpful and organised. The pub itself seems to need a refresh but it wasn't offensive.

Tuesday lunchtime,walked in sat at table . Went to bar waited 10 minutes only one member staff and was taking orders at other bar . When she came to serve me I orders drinks and food at the same time. I was told shouldn’t have sat at the table but to wait. No signage telling me that .ordered two ploughman’s waited 35 mintues.the quality of the meal was poor, two small bits of tomato,warmed up pork pie must of been frozen,bread baguette was hard to cut looked like frozen and not warmed up correctly.cucumber was look like the middle of it cut out .egg was pickled.couple pieces of red onion.no chutney.I visited this pub as owner has another pub which is good quality food, this pub is poor .

Our Waitress was really friendly and kind and all gave us a splendid birthday meal for my Mum.

Couldn't fault the place from the moment we arrived , plenty of parking , lovely big play area , walked through the door to a lovely smile and welcome , took our food order from our table , food arrived looked and tasted fantastic, i had a JD burger , homemade coleslaw ,salad , jD nuggets, onion rings ,Couldn't eat all of mine lovely big portions ,my partner had the rib combo all the above sides and corn on the cob ,staff very good , very clean pub and toilets , will definitely be returning. Very friendly atmosphere.

We were a family of 12 who hadn’t booked as it was a last minute decision to eat out. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Would definitely recommend.

A great pub great food and service

No alternative parking available as car park was full, Food was very nice however, Service could have been better although they were exceptionally busy Toilets need to be updated as you need to double flush the toilet, the cold water tap did not work, no information on how to use the hot water, and the hand dryer didn't dry your hands, with no paper towels as an alternative, But to be truthful although the food is good, It was not much better than Boss cafe in Bridgwater which is better value for money with better toilet facilities and a public car park.

Came across here and it was a nice place for a few drinks. We wanted food but they had closed the kitchen early

popped into the friendly spirit for a carvery today due to out local combwich pub not serving them and OH MY!!! Probably the best roast dinner i have ever eaten… - Pink beef - crisp but fluffy roasters - fresh veggies - gravy that made me think of my mum The mocha cheesecake was also outstanding!! Young waitress with red hair was attentive and polite The young girl carving and cooking was so polite but the fact she also came to check we were ok shows she cared, up leaving we found out from an older couple she was in fact on of the managers and that was a delight to see her so hands on. We were hesitant after reading some of the reviews below but it for sure wasn’t like any of them portrayed! Only moan we have is ive wasted a day as going home to sleep this off Well done friendly spirit - lovely to see our local thrive

We visited here on the 24th of May for their first ever bike night. Will definitely go again

First items we ordered we were told after a while were unavailable so reordered. Waited a long time and when eventually the meals arrived one wasn’t as ordered so one of our group received (which had items missing) and ate their meal after we had finished ours. Food at very best ok, would we eat there again - NO.

Had an amazing meal here with the wife and friend. The BBQ platter was amazing I tried to eat it to myself but couldn’t manage the chips or salad. The chicken wings are to die for. Well done to the chef and team

Waited 40 mins for 2 ploughman's which did not arrive so paid for drinks and left. Only two staff on duty one behind bar and one in kitchen. 15/05/2024 Arrived 12.15 left 13.00 Gerry

This is our local pub and we went for a ploughman’s lunch. Waited for 45 minutes and the kitchen couldn’t produce any food. Not a problem had it been busy. I can lay out a cold platter in under five minutes-not sure what the problem was? Needs addressing to retain customers I would say

Music was annoying and loud but it was turned down when we asked. Food was okay it depends on what you have but quite pricey for what it is and the amount you get. I had a fruit knickerbocker glory, the strawberries tasted awful like onion I think they'd been cut in a board which had been used to cut onions. I did mention it when I paid but was met with a blankish stare and not much of an answer . The waitresses and chef were lovely though. It definitely all needs tweaking and separate boards used for cutting!

I have in the past visited this public house and enjoyed their food and beers. My recent visit on Thursday, 9th May 2024, was extremely disappointing. Having booked a table for 4, we ordered our meals and then had to wait nearly an hour for the main course to arrive. The food was extremely basic and very average in quality. We then ordered puddings and had to wait a further 38 minutes and had to change one order because their ice cream machine was not operating. One of their draft beers was not available and had not been replenished for 2 days. Their restaurant was not at all busy on our visit. I will not be visiting ever again.

Was a good pint, friendly atmosphere, barmaids were attentive and even willing to learn to speak French to the overseas visitors, fun times were had by all

First visit since the Friendly Spirit changed hands Menu good & good prices Food was nice I had steak & was well cooked - nice desserts My issue is we went mid-week and including us there were only two tables eating, bar wasn’t busy but it took ages to be spoken to at bar & we then were just told to sit anywhere Staff openly huffed & puffed all the time, everything in a quiet pub was a lot of effort/trouble for them I like to go out to relax & feel spoilt I actually felt quite stressed by the end due to all the huffing . There was a lot of dashing & rushing for no apparent reason You cannot order drinks at your meal table, food arrived & we had to go to the bar to order your drinks, wait a lot, be huffed at your food go cold Despite lovely food would I go back I doubt it as left feeling tense & slightly annoyed with the experience

Excellent service staff are not afraid to have a joke 🤣 the food was delicious 100% would recommend can't wait to try more of the menu

Popped in for a couple of beers and was pleased to see the new landlord had already improved the pub. Good beer and service, will be back to eat soon.

It’s a really good pub in a great location with a large beer garden, where the previous owners didn’t do the place justice. But happily, there is a new family in place to manage the business now, who have great experience and are local to the area. We (3 adults and 2 children) visited on the re-opening evening and had two-course meals. The meals were excellent quality and although the kitchen was quite busy, there was very little waiting time. The waiting staff were attentive, but not overly so, and although casually dressed, were very clean and smart. Noting that our visit was on their reopening evening, the decor was very clean and fresh. The lounge bar could do with ‘dressing’,as it seemed a little ‘unfinished’, but I expect this will develop over time. I had no call to use the toilets on this occasion. We visited in the evening, so didn’t get a good look at the outside areas. However there is a reasonably sized car park, which appeared well lit. However, the walk from the front door of the pub to the carpark, is not particularly well lit, and needs improvement. Generally the outside appearance needs sprucing up, but don’t be put off by this, as a warm welcome awaits.

Sue, Mike and family have run this place for 5years and made it lovely n homely. Altho its a village pub off the beaten track it was always worth the effort as the food n service were 2nd to none. We would celebrate family birthdays etc n always were 8-10 of us. Sadly they have decided to step back n make more time for family. Their familiy's gain is definitely our loss. Good luck to sue n Mike n family Let's hope the new licensees will keep the standards as high. Generally speaking theres plenty of seating and parking here, and a lovely garden with lots for the kids. Out the front there's a pretty little stream along the edge of grass. Lovely village-y feel.

The management here are absolutely clueless and vile, they had no understanding of what they had available on their very limited menu, food was disgusting and staff were verbally abusive. We will not be back

Horrible experience here today. Had a couple friends who drove 4 hours to come visit me and my new baby. Decided to go for a walk down to the (not so) friendly spirit. We sat outside while our partners went in to get a drink, not realising it was closed off. Im not sure who the bloke was who came out and rudely told us to move but he honestly made us so uncomfortable. He then accused us of “not even buying a drink”. I was so embarrassed that I’d chosen that pub to take my friends to, I actually won’t be returning anytime soon. He did come out and give us a half arsed apology once he realised we actually had bought a drink but it’s definitely left a very bitter taste in my mouth. Manners cost nothing.

We visited here recently and the staff were lovely and friendly. Overall the food was OK, nothing exceptional for the price you pay. There is a private carpark, but looks more like a dumping ground. Unfortunately one of their selling points by having a brook at the back of the pub, the grass verge was covered in dog poo!! Obviously this is local toilet for their dogs!! How disappointing!

Popped in for a carvery while on holiday, very pleasant staff and a proper MUMS roast dinner! Highly recommended.

Possibly the worst pub I've been in. Outside looks rundown and the carpark is a builders yard. Dark, peeling paint and wholly unwelcoming. Landlady seemed put out that we weren't locals and wanted serving. No prices , not charged until leaving and no idea what the bill would be. Asked if we were ordering from the seniors menu (we are both 56!) When we said no we preferred the standard menu,we were handed a hand written list on the back of an envelope. An actual envelope ,as pictured,without prices. Food was basic greasy spoon cafe standard but fairly quick though very overpriced.

Lives up to its name! Absolutely dead hard pub quiz. Embarassingly last - but we did get free roasties and ended up still getting a bag of maoam.

Totally devoid of atmosphere- miserable experience

Great local pub. Mike & Sue the landlords are always friendly and helpful. Food is simple but good pub grub with VERY generous portions. Nice beer garden with small child's wooden play castle, and a beautiful stream running right next to the pub.

Called in for lunch after a Coastal walk. Home made Steak & Ale pie to die for, a much have. Large than large 12"Pizza, which was delicious and a fantastic advertisement for their pizza night. Very friendly staff, I love using local traditional pubs. Keep up the excellent work, thank you.

Brilliant food great service good prices

Dropped in with our local mate for a quick bite. The beer (hand pulled Jail Ale) was exceptional as was the cider. We ate a nicely presented ploughman’s, ham sandwich and less appetising mushrooms in garlic sauce with crusty bread. Service was good and the pubis dog friendly inside and out.

A late Sunday lunch resulted in a poor standard of roast lunch. Runny soup didn't help at all, served by a grumpy cook but the bar service was 👍 We came here very frequently before we emigrated 10 years ago but standards have significantly dropped so we wont be heading back there again, especially as there are so many other places to go.

Friendly staff and cheerful staff. Sat in what could have been a lovely garden which was let down by neglect so everything was tatty and the grass needed cutting. Tables are crammed. Nice play area for children I would think up to about 7 or 8.

A beautiful pub in a lovely setting! We called last minute for a table of 8 and the staff were only happy to accommodate. Lots of choice on the menu including vegetarian and vegan options. Very generous portions and wholesome food. Fab little play area for the kiddes and a very welcoming atmosphere :)

Amazing food, family owned, nice staff, quite fast serving too. Chips are unreal

Food not too bad for a village pub, but evening completely spoiled by unruly children (3 young girls) running riot around the pub while we were trying to enjoy a meal and a drink. Playing hide and seek, and doing gymnastics next to other customers tables is inexcusable at 8 o!clock at night. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) the parents didn’t say a word. Unlikely to return, which is a shame as the staff were very friendly.

We were staying locally on business at Gurney Manor Mill and were recommended The Friendly Spirit for meals etc. It turned out to be a great recommendation as we visited every evening of our five night stay. The warmth of welcome and presentation of the establishment was our first impression. The bar service was welcoming and attentive. The food menu catered for just about every palate and the dining area comfortable and well presented. Table service was prompt and meals arrived quickly, beautifully cooked and served. We noted special offers such as Pizza night, Burger night, Grill night along with quiz night etc. I fully recommend The Friendly Spirit for food, drink, entertainment and a lovely warmth of welcome. A great place at the heart of the village.

We're staying locally and have visited three times so far for our evening meal. The staff are friendly and the food is tasty, well cooked and filling. We would certainly recommend. Thank you for your hospitality so far this week.

Really enjoyed our evening here. The food is great value and the surroundings nice and cosy. The car park is a bit dark and awkward for those with a disability. The staff made us feel really welcome. They were very polite and efficient. We will be going back.

Nice to be able to choose from the menu if you did not fancy roast. I had an excellent Sirloin while my Wife had her Sunday roast. Friendly, helpful staff and made welcome. Have already recommended to family and friends.

Great pub, friendly, lots of different areas, fantastic outside seating areas

Every meal I have had be it eat in take away and even Christmas Day have all be delicious and flawless. The landlady and landlord are also very friendly and helpful. Would recommend them every time. I am now waiting for 2022 Christmas Day menu

Family get together for a wedding anniversary. Everything was spot on, no delays, food excellent and very attentive staff. Everyone remarked how good it was.

First visit, definitely the LAST! Not worth 1 star rating! Sunday lunch visit. Service very slow, no check on us during meal, over 5 minutes for condiments to arrive and had to go get the member of staff ourselves. Steak inedible for both myself and my friend ordering the rump surf n turf, we were told 'butchers fault, weve known for a while they are bad'. Did not want to offer money off the bill, begrudgingly said £3 (meal was £21) on a £115 bill for 5 mains and some cokes. Argued with me I'd eaten half, yes the chips and peas as I was hungry, also the cheapest thing on the plate, not really worth £21! I asked for half off one of the steak meals, which I thought was fair and the owners attitude was worse than the meal and service! No manors and lack of customer service, the owner was vile and straight off offensive and attacking. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

A great little traditional pub I a lovely little village

As the name suggests the staff were really friendly and very attentive. We enjoyed a lovely meal with excellent portion size and a good range of ales and gins available from the bar. Would recommend!

Lovely location, absolutely fantastic little "village pub on the river" vibe. Drinks were reasonably priced for the area and the decor of the pub was spot on through out. The only thing preventing a 5 star rating is one member of staff unfortunately not putting the "friendly" in "friendly spirit", they had a "do i have to?" Kind of attitude to serving

Really really impressed . We went there on mother's Day . The food was lovely the staff were very friendly the prices were spot on and it's in a lovely setting . We will be going back
