This is a great local place for fish and chips. Owners really friendly. Covid safe measures in place. Fish and chips were really tasty and a good price. Highly recommended.

We've been staying the village and have had two takeaways from here, the food is great, staff friendly and all covid safe. If you don't like the fish and chips from here then fish and chips are probably not for you.

The Friary has done a great job of adapting during Covid-19. During the lockdown they provided takeaways with online ordering. Initially the booking system was a bit clunky, but they've worked it and now it's brilliant. The food is always prepared on time and fresh. Prices are really reasonable too.

This is one of those 'must visit' places when you are in South Devon and are hungry. Beautiful fresh caught fish and locally grown potatoes combined with cooking expertise by the renowned chef Chris. Always a joy. Get yourselves down there.

Been using the Friary since moving to the area 10 years ago. Always phone our order through and never had an issue until Wednesday 24th April!!! Phoned to place an order for gluten free chicken and chips. The young girl who answered the phone (with attitude) didn't appear to know what was meant by gluten free as she responded by telling me their chips were cooked in vegetable oil!! When I arrived to collect the order the "gluten free" chicken had been cooked and placed in the hot space next to breaded chicken and batter bits. When I queried why an order for gluten free food had been placed with items that were breaded and battered I was told they weren't touching (yes they were) and then to confirm my doubts they actually understood about gluten free the chap doing the frying threw 10 battered sausages into the same area for good measure!!! When I asked the young girl if she knew what gluten was she said yes, when I asked her if she knew what gluten could do to someone with Coeliac disease she gave me a blank stare, no point trying to enlighten them about cross contamination then!!. Needless to say the pre-ordered "gluten free" chicken languishing on a hot tray with breaded chicken, battered bits and 10 battered sausages stayed where it was. If this establishment has changed hands they really need to educate themselves about food allergies and as for the young girl - ditch the attitude.

We popped into this little viallge for some tea as we had been told about this chippy. Well, I would have to say that these were some of the best fish and chips we have ever had. In particular the cod was beautifully done and the batter superb. Chips with salt and vinegar in the wrapper are just great. Fantastic.

Super little takeaway. The fish was really tasty, as were the chips. It was very busy too, which is always a good sign.

Stopped here on the offchance as we wanted to sample fish & chips for supper before we got too far away from the sea as we were on our way back to Worcestershire via A38/M5. Lovely fish & pretty good chips, slightly too greasy for me but hugely so. Had to wait 5 minutes for our order but at lest everything was freshly cooked. Soft drinks there also. Recommended for food just a couple of miles off Mway & better than the services usual offerings. Food can be pre-ordered 01364 73933

All food is cooked to order but they do take phone orders so no need to wait. Fabulous food and great service. Parking can be a nightmare as it is street parking. The prices are very resonable and the portion size is great.

We sometimes go here if we want a decent take-away fish and chip meal. The shop is always busy and the food is always well cooked. There can be a wait for cooked food, but the quality is worth waiting for.

I am not a great person for queuing and so we order our menu in advance, and after getting a collection time of a half hour I wait at home till 10 mins before the collection time and walk down...at arrival there is always a queue and our order is obvious to see on the hot plate but despite telling the staff my name and order time I am forced to wait, while our food is obvious to see while every order in the chip shop is served...I.E. our order was placed at 6:15 for a 6:45 collection and in actual fact the order is ready for me at 7:15 which means that our food has been sat on the hot plate for a half hour after it was due for collection...not a good way to take or deliver orders...we have decided not to bother ordering our food by phone again and indeed whether to bother returning as this is just poor service, yes people have arrived and ordered but we phoned our order a half hour in advance and expect our order on time...

South Brent isn't up to much - fancy putting the only bench in the high street (there's a supermarket and a few shops) next to the biggest industrial waste bin in town! - but there's a gem of a fish and chip shop! Simple, perfect fish and chips served with a style. After a day walking on Dartmoor, the surprise of finding somewhere as good as this was delightful. The Friary was friendly and serves super fish and chips. What more can I say? 5 stars.

Chris and Tash are doing a fantastic job. I was worried that things would change when the business changed hands last year, but I'm pleased it's still great! Still the best Cheeseburger and Chips in the area. Thank you very much!

What friendly staff! The food we got was good. Didn't take ages and it was nice that it was actually cooked to order so I didn't mind waiting a few minutes for it to be Cooked. Much better than your average chippy!

The Scampi is fantastic as are the Cheeseburgers and Chips too. I try to go most Tuesday lunchtimes as Steve and Lynda are usually there then and they not only make the best food, but they're the friendliest people too. I love that everything is cooked freshly and unlike some other fish and chips shops, there isn't food sitting under the heatlamps for questionable amounts of time. Definitely the highlight of South Brent for me.

Only been here on three occasions as I don't live in the area. Visited last week and the standard was very good. Visited this week and the standard is very poor. Last week a lady was frying. This week a bald headed chap was cooking, who I believe was covering for the owner who was away. Someone needs to teach him how to cook chips. Burnt on the outside, not cooked properly on the inside. My first visit here, I had the same experience, so it wasn't a one off. Only visit when the lady is cooking and you won't be disappointed.

We would like to say that we have yet to experience the food at the Friary as unfortunately on both occasions have been let down. On our first attempt we pre ordered over the telephone and were asked for our preference in time, in order to collect and pay for our Fish & Chips. On arrival we were told that they were busy and that we would have a further 10-15 mins to wait , Needless to say we weren't happy with this. On complaining to the owner's we were told that the 'influx' of custom had been unprecedented on this particular evening and that they were 'sorry' , we grabbed a microwave meal from the local Co-op instead. Two weeks later we made a second attempt, rang them and pre ordered once again only this time suggesting that they were to give us a time in which to collect our order (we thought that this would avoid having to wait unnecessarily). We arrived on time and were again told that they 'weren't sure how much longer, perhaps 20 minutes' Needless to say we cancelled immediately and drove to Buckfastleigh where we were served with in 5 minute without pre ordering. Unfortunately the Friary has taken the 'Fast' out of 'Fast Food'

I have only eaten here once, when I happened to be in the South Brent area and found this busy fish and chip shop in the town centre. The queue was outside of the door, but despite this, I found the fish and chips only to be fairly average, and portions small for the price. It cost around £5.00 for haddock and chips I believe; both the fish and chips were cooked fairly well, with reasonably crisp batter, but there was literally only a handful of chips and the piece of haddock itself was small. I'm not sure the queue and cost merited the meal. That said, I don't think there are any local rivals, so, if you're happy to wait, and not very hungry, this chip shop is fine.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
