Really great fish and chips but the Korean food is outstanding - try the avacado and lime salad with spicy Korean chicken - really great. All the Poke bowls are fantastic

Went into the takeaway today Monday the 13/06/22 ordered a large battered sausage, chips, mushy peas and a can of coke £7.10 the chips were Frozen cooked on the outside hollow inside the sausage really bland absolute rip off worst chips I have eaten served by a guy who cooked the food he said I could eat inside while I'm eating my food a lady comes from out the back and gives the guy a hand I seem to recognise the lady from a few year ago I never forget a face it's funny how there is reviews about the quality of the chips then they change the name from The Friar to Big Fish bit of a weird set up Sushi bar on one side and Fish bar on the other side of the takeaway I'm convinced that's the same lady who has served me before they have changed there name because of the bad reviews.

Recently changed hands and not only does the BEST fish and chips in lewes but also INCREDIBLE sushi and Korean chicken. Warm and welcoming staff. Definitely going again ASAP!

They’ve changed their name to bIg fish and now offer sushi and Korean fried chicken as well. Really good and lovely people.

A little while ago, I said how wonderful the food from here was - fantastic fish and chips like it should be. Wondered if it might just be a lucky strike! Since then son Jonathan and I have been back 7 times for various pre ordered take out meals for three of us, mostly fish and chips (hoped to try deep fried cheesecake but they hadn't been able to get ingredients which was probably just as well!!!) and delighted to say every time has been just as good as the first! Really really good! Well done all at the Friars. Thank you very much.

Staying with son Jonathan, we wanted fish and chips for supper. We've tried other places which were OK but a bit disappointing. Gave the Friar a go and were certainly not disappointed! Phoned order of two large and one small cod, one large and one small chips. Ready for pickup in 15 mins and, only because it was busy, only a very short wait to be served. The large cod (served with two nice big segments of fresh lemon) was a good size, the fish beautifully cooked with wonderful crispy batter -not oily at all. Chips also were good, well cooked and plenty of them. (choice of vinegar availabe). All for just less than £20 which we thought was good value for the excellent quality. Will be going to The Friar again for sure!

Its ok, super quick friendly service and edible food. Not the best and not the worst quality chippy. Prefer my cod without the skin on but appreciate that might be a personal preference, was slightly on the greasy side otherwise. Also prefer traditional chippy paper than the boxes served here. Chips ok otherwise. Prefer curry sauce with onion lumps rather than the smooth stuff. Thanks

Never mind the other reports and the rather 'careworn' décor. We had Cod and Chips and it was the best we've had in a long time.

I used to use this place a lot when I lived nearby, basically because I was too lazy to walk to the better one ten minutes away. Nothing at all wrong with the food, though the chips could be crispier, and the people are always friendly

We got a take away from here this evening and I honestly wish we hadn't. While the fish was greasy at best we realised when we got home (a one minute walk away) that the chips were lukewarm and soggy. We'd clearly been served old chips that had been hanging around rather than fresh ones. An absolute waste of money, don't bother!!

there are better in Lewes, dirty menu, dirty service only 1 out of 5 for food hygiene, even public areas are dirty, what does it look like in the areas we cant see

I wanted to match your food standards agency rating, and wanted to make everyone aware that this takeaway has a 1/5 government health rating yet you don’t seem to advertise this (I wonder why...). The food is terrible, very greasy, staff aren’t great and it is like walking 30 years in the past when you go there

horrible nasty place, TERRIBLE FOOD bad chips ( someone needs to lean how to cook chips here ) CAPITAL LETTERS ---- FILTHY SHOP ! and i would actually call environmental health here if that is what they want ! NEVER IN ALL my findings of cafes or restaurants or even local chippys have i ever had the worse food i can NOT CONSUME ! I have visited more than most as I write books on the best takeaways or cafes ETC in the Sussex area, BUT THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING, lets see if they contest this comment ,, FOOD not good, warm at best and not good cooked ! service terrible, place dirty and looks like its ready for demolition ! this has been now sent to the local health and environmental agency as neither the food or the place was even remotely ACCEPTABLE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, we called here and only bought chips, well if you can call them that, CRISPY BITS ,, CRUNCHY, but no REAL chips . they also insist on putting their own salt and vinegar on them BIG MISTAKE AS they use more than McDonalds ever did, BASICALLY DISGUSTING !!!!!!!!! LETS SEE WHAT THEY SAY NOW . you certainly will not be top of the list in the book of GOOD TAKEAWAYS AND CAFES IN SUSSEX !!!!!!

This is a pretty standard fish and chip shop, but I've never had cause for complaint. Decent food, prices and friendly service.

Great fish and chips together with battered sausage. Piping hot and very tasty. An old fashioned chippy with friendly service.

Had a fab takeaway! Two large chips, a large sausage, a fish cake and a large battered cod. The fish tasted so fresh! It flaked perfectly and was juicy and clean tasting. The batter tasted like they had used new oil. Very impressed! Chips were yummy. Good quality, chunky, hot and squishy. Lots of salt and vinegar. The best fishcake I've ever tried from a chippy. Curry sauce was slightly spicy. I've recently tried all the local fish and chippys and the Friar was definitely my favourite. Recommended!

Sinceramente, es su antiguo chino chippy! ¿qué no? Patatas fritas crujientes peces propiamente dicho, y mi favorito, maltratadas, spam frito churro! No comas demasiado de ellos, usted morirá. La comida no es saludable, y que ni siquiera es bueno, pero es barato, alegre, y ese equilibrio justo de sabor y grasa. Esencial después de un par de pintas en los brazos en Lewes.

Lovely people who try hard to please. Tasty fresh fish in a good batter and chips that were ok, but a little bit soggy. Not an area you can park easily, but its Lewes.

The quality of the chips has improved since the last owners. I think they are cooking the chips at a higher temperature which seals the chip and stops them becoming soggy and sticking to the wrapper as much as they used to.

I wish i could say at least we were welcomed with a smile but i can't even say that. This chip shop must survive off the school lunch crowd. as a vegetarian, I find it very hard to get a good take out from any where local, but i sceptically tried the veggie burger and it was amazing. I totally recommend this burger, its not soggy or greasy and it tastes amazing!

Excellent fresh perky chips. Not too big. Not flabby. No nasty 'dead oil' aftertaste. Crispy batter on my fish. Not expensive. Huge improvement on the previous owners (see earlier poor reviews).

Fish and chips were soggy greasy and chips were cold. Very disappointing. Went the second time thinking the first time I went they were having an off day. Despite not being particularly busy its seems to take a long time. Putting an order together. It looks like chaos. Lots of flapping

Lovely cod & chips, I had a nice thick meaty bit of fish and my chips were plentiful, rounded off with my favourite pickled egg!! Very fresh & well cooked, and reasonably priced. Nice friendly, hard working people who run it. I've only recently moved to this area and have used it 3 times already this month. I'd recommend this fish & chip shop to anyone.

Dreadful... I judge a place by how it looks from the outside. It looks run down. Inside walls are stained brown with grease. Chips are greasy, fish tasteless and expensive. The place just doesn't look clean. Review is based on an honest account and the two occassions that I visited. Months later and nothing has changed.

Lovely family serving excellent fare. The fish and chips is consistantly good and well cooked. We have tried others but keep coming back.
