We absolutely love The French Oven. Huge fresh selection to choose from and amazing customer service every time. Cup cakes for Mother’s Day went down a treat with the whole family and we’ve recently been to a birthday party they catered for and the food was outstanding, everyone commented on how good it was. Definitely worth a visit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bought four steak & kidney pies from here, could not taste any kidney & very peppery, in fact all I could taste was pepper. My partner & myself ate two, but threw the other two away. Waste of money, but will not use again. Also customers are expected to wear face masks, but the staff at the French Oven do not.

Just need to point out that this is a shop in a market, and not a cafe or restaurant and there are no tables or chairs available. Usually visit on a Saturday and it is always busy. Quite a small shop but they have a very good choice of breads and pastries. Sausage rolls are the best.

Their Russian cake is a welcome reminder of my past. Cheap and cheerful, it has some of the taste, most of the ingredients but not quite the right amounts. Something missing and I believe it may be alcohol related!! Nice try and I will still buy until I find the original!!

Lunchtime place to go love the handmade pies my favourite is the mushy pea and mince closely followed by their cottage pie. I often take one home for my neighbours as they are an older couple they add veg and have them as lunch or dinner. Recommended

Purchased pies and pasties here a couple of times across the last month or so and both times left a little disappointed. First time purchased a steak and kidney pie pastry and gravy spot on but not a single piece of meat in there! However found myself in there last week and thought lets give it another go. Tempted by the corned beef pastie offer (2 for £2). First pasty absolutely lush, stuffed full with filling and definately up there. However the second one was a warm pastry balloon with a mere scraping of filling. Unfortunately (for me anyway 😅) I'd split the first one with my daughter. Tbh would have been satisfied with the total corned beef filling across both pasties. Would have been fuming if i'd had the second pasty only.

Fantastic little bakery in Grainger Market selling a huge selection of different breads, pies, cakes and biscuits. I bought four stotties for £1.70; they look huge but they’re the perfect size for sandwiches. Soft, pillowy bread without being too heavy or causing bloating, which most commercial breads seem to do (nice...). The girl who served me was very sweet too. Shame they’d run out of griddle scones, which are a must try!

Just purchased a sourdough loaf from Grainger market outlet. Driven 150 miles home to find they have robbed me off with a normal loaf but still charged £1.80. The loaf was picked from sourdough section , but it seems they don’t know what sourdough is. It was funny coming to write this n thinking I was being fussy. However see below n it seems this is a regular occurrence! Poor

I know I should have checked the second time but it is difficult when the bread is wrapped in plastic. The last couple of times I went to this shop I requested Sourdough bread. The first time when I got home I realised I had been given a white loaf though it had been picked up by the staff from the sourdough shelf. I thought it was a genuine mistake and let it go as the white loaf wasn’t bad at all. The next time I went we had a repeat performance. Asked for sourdough got white. I thought this might be a problem with someone placing the bread on the wrong shelf so wrote to the bakery to check. They have not bothered to reply but they obviously received my mail as I am now on their mailing list😤. I have not had their white sourdough before as it is always out of stock when I have tried but have had their Beetroot sourdough which is rock like but at least is sourdough. I just read one of their reviews where a lady says that their sourdough tastes like white bread so maybe they do sell white bread as sourdough to unsuspecting customers or it was a genuine mistake twice, but I will never know as they haven’t bothered to respond.

The French Oven is a bakery in the Graninger Market area of the city. The pastries of pies, pasties and other goodies are second to none. My favourite is the Cornish pasty which is filled with quality ingredients. I am not a sweet tooth person but if the cakes are as half as good as the savourys then they will be excellent. I can say many nice things about the French Oven but the proof is in the eating. Enjoy

We purchased a deal on Living Social and what a let down. The panini was tasteless, dry and uncooked inside. The cakes we were allowed to choose from were very limited and didn't include any of the flans which looked nice. We ended up choosing croissant which isn't what you'd normally have as a desert. The staffs attitude was awful although one of the girls was quite pleasant. They had to go to Sloppy Joes to get out sandwiches made up as they share stock. Really not what I expected.

Collected a box for mothers day which I had ordered in advance online, arrived in the morning to collect, I explained I'd ordered a box, the reply from the girl was simply "yeah, 12 pounds".....no please, no going to get my box just a demand for cash....thought that was odd but not the end of the world so I paid up, stood to the side slightly whilst the waiting queue was served, a few customers and 6-7 minutes later the same girl said "you do realise your box is going to be a while".....again no manners or customer service just a blank stare.....and no I didn't realise that as you didn't tell me that or anything else for that matter....the best was yet to come.....i asked how long it would be as I could go kill time in the market, the response....and this is word for word..."I literally have no idea"....I just didn't get it, she wasn't rude she was just completely unhelpful, i replied (getting a little irritated at this point) "will it be 5 minutes? 10 minutes? An hour?".....at which point i was informed it'd be 10 minutes so i went for a wander, returned fifteen mins or so later and collected my box. At no point was the girl who served me particularly rude i just found her incredibly unhelpful and a bit like speaking to the "computer says no woman" off little Britain and i couldn't see the point in me having pre ordered a box at all. Anyway l, the cakes and scones were very good, the sandwiches were ok at best, I'll return as the foods good, lets hope for better service.

I bought a Group-On deal for this shop because I had read so many good things about it and I must say I was not disappointed with either the choice or the taste. I concentrated on buying their pies and quiches because they were the items that had received the most praise in earlier reviews and they were all delicious. I wanted to try the lamb and mint pies, however, they were sold out (probably because they have been recommended so often) but I will make it my business to go back again. Lovely artisan breads and pastries in Grainger Market. Can't miss them, they're right in the nice middle bit with the cafes. The first thing I had here was a loaf of their bread that was wholegrain and full of yummy seeds. They sliced it for me which was great, and it was only £1.85. It's delicious bread that was wonderful with our breakfasts and dinners. It's a bit small to be sandwich bread (it's just not as "tall" as store loaves, so would just make very little sandwiches) but for morning toast, or serving with a saucy meal (mopping up the good bits from the bottom of the bowl) it was perfect. You can't use store bought bread for that kind of thing! They also do a really lovely black pudding bread. Sounds strange, but it's great with a savory flavor that will go perfectly with your breakfasts. They also had lovely macarons (I think I had the violet flavor - delicious) and we also enjoyed a variety of sweets. They had this little almond tart thing that was totally addictive. The fruit-filled slices were very good too. We've got a few pasties in our freezer, ready to bake on a busy weeknight. My hair stylist said the chili con carne pasty is amazing, can't wait to try it! They take orders ahead if you want to make sure they don't run out of stock. Great prices as well, and it feels good to support such a nice local business. I think they're about to start delivery too!! Only a £2 delivery fee, so go for it if you can't get into town.

I'm not sure why this is billed as a restaurant, because as far as I can see it is a bread bakery and patisserie. The rye bread is delicious and we buy this all the time. The staff also seem a lot more intelligent than the normal bakery/ lunch placed and serve you with speed but polite and informative.

Have seen this place loads of times but always thought I shouldn't indulge, although it looked lovely. I got a deal so I decided to finally visit and it was lovely. Huge selection of cakes and sandwiches etc and the food tasted great.

Amongst the maze of Grainger Market sits the French Over, delivering unreal breads and sandwiches.

Used a living social voucher for this visit. What a great little bakers. The service was excellent, girl serving us was very accommodating and helpful. Food was tasty, toasted pannini's with delicious fillings and the cakes (peach melba, muffin and cupcake) were nice. Will definitely visit again.

Fabulous breakfast. So good I went 2 days in a row. The French toast stack was a must have and melted in the mouth. The eggs Benedict were also superb.

Amazing steak night on Thursday. The steak was cooked to perfection. Excellent value for money. Whether you are on holiday or travelling for business I would definitely recommend

Excellent and seemingly authentic French. Best dauphinoise I can remember after a dodgy looking but really nice baked Camembert. Bougignon was very good though bavette was a bit on the tough side. Noted it would. Ll have been better served on hot plates….personal preference

It was my birthday on Sunday. A late Sunday lunch with family was such a good idea. Roast pork had sounded so appealing, especially considering that living alone nowadays means that traditional Sunday dinner no longer happens at home. Plus points: an amazing building, a warm welcome and most pleasant staff. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the meal was awful because of soggy crackling, hard and shrunken roast potatoes, one piece of carrot (!), cold greens and lukewarm watery gravy. And, I didn't like the block of stuffing, which, by the way, was also cold. In addition, we waited an hour for the main course to arrive. A disappointed customer.
