Barluga in Newcastle upon Tyne

It was my birthday on Sunday. A late Sunday lunch with family was such a good idea. Roast pork had sounded so appealing, especially considering that living alone nowadays means that traditional Sunday dinner no longer happens at home. Plus points: an amazing building, a warm welcome and most pleasant staff. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the meal was awful because of soggy crackling, hard and shrunken roast potatoes, one piece of carrot (!), cold greens and lukewarm watery gravy. And, I didn't like the block of stuffing, which, by the way, was also cold. In addition, we waited an hour for the main course to arrive. A disappointed customer.

Wow what an amazing Sunday lunch. The food is second to none. From the minute you step into the Barluga the service is amazing. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. The quality of the food is excellent and the potion size is fantastic. Really looking forward to our next visit. Keep up the good work it's greatly appreciated.

It was excellent, VEG food was outstanding!! Just music was too loud, little bit loud for my age I guess.

Very disappointing visit to Barluga Gosforth for Sunday lunch. Service was slow, when our lunch eventually arrived the only thing hot was the mashed potato, the veg, yorkshire and gravy were lukewarm. It didn't improve with dessert with the custard arriving cold and lumpy! We weren't the only customers to be unhappy today, unfortunately we won't be rushing back!

I’m going with 5 stars based on venue, atmosphere, food and staff. Absolutely gorgeous Sunday lunch mmmmmmm! Definitely go back.

The food was tasty and fresh and the staff were lovely and friendly I definitely will be back.

I had a lovely afternoon in Bar Luga in Gosforth with my friend on Friday 22nd December. The food was lovely but what made the experience extra special was the attention we were given by our lovely waitress Hannah. What a lovely girl! Hannah clearly loves her job and is so genuine and friendly in her approach. She made us feel like she was interested in chatting to us. We certainly received service with a smile. She is an asset and should be very proud of herself! We will definitely be returning! Merry Christmas and thank you Hannah 🎄❤️

Beware!!! 2 for £12 cocktails 😳 only includes certain cocktails but gives no indication of which AND MORE IMPORTANTLY which are NOT included in the deal, plus no indication was given by the bat staff at the time of purchase 🤷‍♀️

Excellent food, brilliant service, great venue. Have been a few times, it's never disappointed us. Highly recommend

Great christmas eve venue, music & people

Went for the Xmas menu with friends last night and the turkey dinner was abysmal. No one complained as we were on a Xmas night out and did not want to make a scene. Burnt gravy, hard roasties, almost raw veg..what has happened to bar luga. The restaurant was not even busy so can’t understand..sorry had to write this revie hence the s ore..we felt robbed, rather have gone to the job bulman, it would have been better. No score for us minus

Lovely surroundings tastefully decorated. Can be a bit expensive for drink as it's a local bar / restaurant. The service can be a little slower at busy times, especially at one side of the bar

I arranged for a booking of about 20 of our keep fit ladies class who enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Barluga. Everyone loved the atmosphere and the wonderful staff who were on duty.The majority of the ladies were over 80.years Old and were delighted with their Christmas lunch

Sadly as a chain this company have left their comfort zone and failed on an epic level. When Barluga opened food options were limited and they didn't cater for dietary requirements. While in the 21st century this is frustrating please don't offer what you can't deliver. Cocktails fantastic can't beat them but this is my second dining experience in a Barluga and the second time I left hungry. A single hard potato in a bit of pastry and a pile of still frozen sprouts is an insult as a vegan Christmas Dinner. I'd let the fact my soup initially came with buttered bread, despite stressing vegan, slide but the main was a catastrophe. I was offered a replacement by a very embarrassed waitress but when I'm eating out with friends I want to eat with them not 30 minutes later and we'd already had a huge wait for mains. The waitress suggested some olives and sides so I wasn't with nothing, I agreed. When I bit in to what I thought was houmous I quickly realised this was butter. Thank god I'm not vegan due to a milk allergy but having not consumed animal products in a decade this is upsetting. If this was a one off with Barluga I'd accept the rather feeble, we are busy excuse, but I had exactly the same at Barluga morpeth 6 months ago where my vegan risotto was served so raw the rice crunched, it had been drowned in so much black pepper it was inedible anyway, presumably in an attempt to hide it being raw. It was replaced but with an option containing dairy 20 minutes later, after my company had finished eating, leaving me to eat alone, only to find I couldn't because it had cheese in. Please either commit yourselves to finding chefs who care about dietary requirements or stop pretending to be in this century. Your cocktails are fantastic. Your food is awful and I really pity your poor waiting staff who are left dealing with an incompetent kitchen time and time again. I apreciate your attempts to smooth things over but future customers need to be warned you are an anti dietary requirements establishment. Go back to what you know bog standard meat and veg with a cocktail or beer and leave it there. I'd much rather eat before I come out than risk being poisened which to date you have a 100% record of doing across multiple venues.

Impressive place in an old church. Two levels. Can't comment on food as we only had drinks. 2 for 1 cocktails recommended

No under 18's allowed after 6pm if it was down to me i would cancel the table

It took an hour for food to arrive and when it did it turned out they'd completely forgotten our starters. Food was average and the fries were like the dregs of a batch and way too much salt

Delicious meal here, first time to Barluga, the interior was amazing, it used to be a church, service excellent and food really tasty. Got the three course Sunday lunch for £23 pp. Or 2 courses for £19.00 if you don't fancy the pudding. Amazing tasty food as a treat on a sunday

It was very quiet so not really any atmosphere. Also the website says the regular menu is available on a Sunday along side the Sunday menu, this isn't the case I really didn't go for Sunday lunch/dinner. The service was great & some food was lovely but some dishes were just ok.

Stunning venue. Food was nice but a bit too salty. Would go back but just for drinks next time..

On entering, no staff to direct you to your table, we had booked ours in advance, though the place was very quiet for a Friday night, I ordered the soup of the day ‘minestrone’ when it came it was so thick it was like trying to eat porridge, no way was this a soup! I did not finish it and even the waitress agreed with me and told me she would have it removed from the bill (no alternative offered), my main course was Spanish mussels cooked with chorizo, again very thick with no liquid at the bottom of the pot, in fact the mussels I left were stuck to the bottom! Not impressed, we will NEVER go there again and it has us doubting the Barluga group standards.

Decided to go on a whim and didn't regret it. Food is awesome and the staff are lovely. Wasn't too busy either which was nice

What a lovely afternoon spent here with one of my friends! We were welcomed on arrival (great touch) and received lovely service from the female member of staff in today! We got a round of coffee, myself a large white wine, 2 mains which included the cheeseburger & thick cut chips, the fillet steak surf & turf along with a side of (gigantic) onion rings. The only criticism would be that the onion rings were probably TOO big lol. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful - by far my favourite Bar Luga setting out of the 3 I’ve visited many times. It is slightly more pricey than other choices on gosforth high street but it’s a much nicer setting inside in my opinion. We received fantastic service along with 2 plates of amazing food - what more can you ask for! Other than maybe some decent music playing to create a bit more atmosphere. Highly recommend and will most definitely return

Slow service for drinks and food

Fantastic roast dinner, in a lovely setting. Great sized portions, between us we tried one of every Sunday lunch option and none disappointed! Would highly recommend.

Lovely place to have a meal or even a drink in a restaurant located within an old beautiful church. Definitely a place to visit.

Food was very good. Our waitress was amazing .. we were a party of 6 on a Saturday being a bit dithery & she was very patient & helpful with menu choices. Just don't go expecting a cheap meal with drinks ... it's a little pricey ....

Often come here with friends. Always high quality customer service. One of the rare places that serves alcohol-free Stella so I often have this with the nachos - would definitely recommend. The building is lovely and if you come earlier in the day, it's not too busy. Music is played at a decent level too.

Cosy warm decor, comfortable seating options Food was nice and tasty. We had excellent service and attention from Kirsty from the minute we sat down. Thank you. I would definitely recommend a repeat visit!

Beautiful place. Our son lives in Newcastle and we were visiting him, he'd wanted to try here for a while. Not the biggest menu going, but the quality of the food was excellent. I got the burger, which was big and tasty, my wife got the Sea Bass, which was fabulous, my son got the mushroom Wellington and his partner the feathered beef, both excellent meals. The staff were very attentive and efficient too. Overall we had a lovely night.

Out for a Christmas meal with friends. As usual, exceptional customer service, friendly, nothing is a bother! We love this venue.

Amazing afternoon lunch and service 🎉

Great food in an absolutely stunning church conversion. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was great. They did make a mistake with a dish but it was rectified immediately and removed from the bill (without us asking - and we'd have accepted a drink). It's not about problems, but how you deal with them and they went above and beyond. One star off because we ordered some glasses of port which came as a single 25ml measure, as did a glass of Bailey's. Which is weird. No one does that.

Had the trio of meats Sunday roast. Pork, beef and chicken perfectly cooked, as was the veg. Nice yorkie and gravy very tasty. Certainly be back.

Absolutely incredible evening for some post work drinks. Our food was absolutely delicious and the cocktails were top notch. Special shoutout to Sam who was the friendliest and loveliest waiter we've met for a long time. Really made our night! Would come back just because of his wonderful service ♥️

Stunning. Food was excellent, service excellent, beautiful interior but hands down one of the best Sunday roasts going in Newcastle. Mussels in white wine and cream sauce some of the best I have had outside of a dedicated seafood restaurant. League of their own. Well done!

Impeccable Sunday roast in a stunning converted church. Highly recommend!

Nice place, started with a cocktail, but there was so much ice in it, that it took the flavour away.

Lovely Sunday roast, I had the chicken supreme which was cooked perfectly. Everyone from our party of 8 chose a variety of dishes from the menu and everyone cleared their plates. The waiting staff were great and no pressure to order in a hurry I think we were there at least a couple of hours and it was very relaxed

Nice place, but we'll over priced on the cocktails they serve. Waited a long time too, to receive drinks, not to be served.

Chips were way too salty so if you have high blood pressure issues, ask the person taking your order to ensure the chef doesn’t add any salt to the chips and just use the table salt provided. Puddings to die for and rest of meal was fine. Really loved the new decor and would go again.

Stunning building with great atmosphere Staff were very friendly and helpful, couldn’t have asked for better. Food was exceptional and we thought overall very good value for money. Will definitely be back.

Nice place with great food. We had 16 in our party and they did a great job of getting all the food out at the same time. Attentive staff without being annoying. Everyone ate well and not an empty glass to be seen.

Booked for a Friday with two other couples for lunch at 2 pm and got a table upstairs as there are only booths downstairs. We ordered from the a la carte menu as there is no set menu here. I think this is a fault that should be corrected. The meals and service were super and we would highly recommend this venue.

This was our first time at Barluga Gosforth. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the novelty of being an former church. The staff were friendly, professional and the food was first class. This won't be the last. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.

First time in Barluga in Gosforth. Building was lovely. Service was a little slow. We had Sunday dinner, very disappointed as it was all cold and roast potatoes hard, no flavour to the beef or gravy and medium beef was raw and my medium raw was just not cooked. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious. So disappointed, we will not be back.

Our 4th time visiting, always get lovely service by Anna. Building is gorgeous, perfect for both Sunday lunch and special anniversary dates alike. Will be going back soon for a roast as it was incredible last time.

Hit this bar on a Sunday afternoon. Nice and quiet with no lunatics in of note. It's a very attractive looking building inside indeed. I've not tried the food yet so no five stars, although if it's decent then five it would be. As always this is an expensive stop off: five GBP's per pint or thereabouts. The newest of the Barluga venue's this is, it's in a perfect location. I imagine it will very quickly and easily capitalise on the good local Gosforth folk who have wedge to spare, and want to visit the latest branch of an already very successful venture.

After a really disappointing and poor start to our evening at a nearby restaurant (we left as a result of poor service), we arrived 1.5hrs early for our reservation.In addition to our early arrival we asked to change our reservation to incorporate food (it was originally booked for drinks).We were fully prepared to be told there wasn't availability, yet we were pleasantly surprised, met with a very warm welcome and shown to another area where we could eat until our table was ready.Throughout our time at Barluga the staff were exceptional and made the experience for us. Our glass wasn't empty for more than a few minutes before a staff member came to take an order. Food was lovely and reasonable.It was at the end of the night though where the restaurant/bar really shone through, when we were unable to get a taxi. They not only managed to get us one, but they wouldn't shut the bar until it had arrived. As two young women this is just first class service and Barluga (Gosforth) now have a loyal customer who will return.

Beautiful place, service from start to finish was brilliant, can’t fault the front of house staff! The food wasn’t the best, the steak was so over cooked, I asked for med but it was well done & so chewy. Big disappointment, as we were really hoping for this place to be good, the hubby did enjoy his fish, but our friend didn’t enjoy her steak to. Maybe we’ll give it another go & stay clear if the steak next time. I have say, again the staff dealt with this problem straight away & too mine off the bill. They did offer us pudding on them but we were being, a drink would have been better lol.

Hadnt booked a table.girl on the door whent overboard to get us a table.it was only for 1 hour but then moved us to anothet table when the hour had expired.great experience to be feel wanted as a customer

El servicio de mesa fue muy eficiente por nuestra encantadora señorita. La comida en el piso de arriba era realmente buena y el joven camarero, que se desquició y parecía estar trabajando solo, fue educado y no fue una molestia traernos vasos de hielo adicional, salsas, etc. limpios y listos para que disfrutemos el resto de la noche, nuevamente con un servicio excepcional. Me sentí seguro y relajado en estos tiempos extraños ya que todos llevaban una máscara cuando se movían por el edificio y estaban socialmente distanciados. Buen tiempo en general.
