Many years ago (too many) I visited The French Horn with my wife but at that time you were not sure if it was a Pub or Restaurant, Boy has that changed, Great Food served on hot plates..Great friendly service and the young man serving us understood the needs of myself and my guests all of us over 75. The food arrived spot on and quickly which surprised us seeing as the Restaurant was rammed. We all had the Sunday Roast Beef (£17.50) which included Cauliflower Cheese..Vegetables..and 3 or 4 slices Beef..excellent Roast Potatoes along with plenty of other veg. Timothy Taylor at £4.70..Stella.£5.00 followed by Coffee at £2.50 and £3.45 Latte the bill for the 3 meals and extras was £73.15 more than acceptable having had an exceptional meal. A really cosy efficient Pub with friendly staff. We will return to what, in my opinion, is the Best Sunday Lunch in the Alton area. Thank uou very much

Update Friday 05th April 2924. I visited with my parents again (I don't live in Alton). We had the same meals as last time, the Horn fish pie and the chicken curry, which were once again, delicious. My Mum tried the Moss Forest cake which she really enjoyed. Harry is an exceptional waiter, really enthusiastic, professional and friendly. All the staff are very welcoming. Highly recommend. First review:- I visited here with my parents a few weeks ago, this review is overdue. We had a warm welcome by a very friendly young man who was very attentive, despite being busy. We had a lovely lunch in a pleasant atmosphere and will definitely come back. If I lived closer I would go to their comedy nights too.

Wasn’t feeling too well this evening and really fancied a roast dinner but didn’t want to make one or go out. Saw that the French Horn were offering free delivery and they had Roast dinner on the menu! I ordered the chicken one and a dessert for afters, to be honest I wasn’t expecting wonderful being a delivery but I was so wrong! The food arrived just half an hour later & was piping hot. It looked amazing & tasted even better! The portion was plenty too. The crumble I ordered for dessert was also unreal! Huge thankyou for the lovely food & quick delivery, will definitely be ordering from you guys again. 5 stars well deserved!

Because of special dietary needs we checked the menu before booking to ensure there was at least 2 dishes that were suitable. On arriving we found that there was only the Valentines fixed menu which had no suitable dishes. Fortunately the kitchen found one of their usual dishes they could serve, but when it arrived the mashed potatoes were cold. They took the dish back and reheated, but then the meat was overheated and dried up. The staff were fantastic in trying to accommodate our needs but the food fell short of our expectations. We were not the only guests that were caught out by the menu change that night, they decided to leave rather than choose from the very restricted Valentine menu. Perhaps the online booking needs to be changed to make it clearer when a restricted menu is the only option. Diners should check when booking which menu is available for the date of their booking.

What a shame! This pub has so much potential, but somehow it's just fading away through lack of interest. The shorter hours and the possibility of earlier closure are obviously off-putting, but the unfriendly barstaff are another negativity. We often visit this pub in an effort to try to help them out, but come away wondering why we bothered.

Booked for a lunch at 1 pm , still waiting for food at 1-45 pm , when we asked how much longer would the food be we were told at least another twenty minutes!. Other customers had also been waiting well over the hour, totally unacceptable. If we had been told from the start that they were running that far behind,it would have saved us waiting so long before making the decision to leave.

STROPPY OVERPRICED SERVICE Stopped here for an impromptu lunch. Was very happy and greeted and shown to a table. order taken very promptly by a young girl. After chasing our food order of an open sandwich after 40 mins. Food was plonked down on our table. I was obviously visually impaired but I didn't even know she had left. I required condiments on my single thin slice of sour bread with a few measley defrosted tasteless prawns but alas my carer had to hunt down a staff member to ask. Ordered a handful of chunky chips to share and omg they weren't wrong with the description... a couple of chips each. Bill was incorrect and again, luckily carer spotted, I had been charged 3 sandwiches Went to the loo before leaving, toilet leaking, floor soaked, no handrier. Overall terrible service, not good quality, and overpriced food (£35+ for 1 slice of toast each) Do not recommend.

Living locally I've heard a lot of good press about the French Horn, I was surprised that it is pretty average and not really much of a threat to the more established Alton Gastro Pubs. Its a cold dining room, and always has been, the bar seems much more comfortable, the lunch/brunch menu is kind of limited - avoid the Sea Bass it was cremated when we visited, the open sandwiches are fine to good, but the fries had been cooked longer than the fish and still arrived cold, the Polish breakfast has great content but you don't get much - defo want to add black pudding both for flavour and bulk. Saturday lunchtime Guinness was on the wrong side of average

Wow where do I start. I have noted the other reviews so am aware we may have caught them on an off day, chef may not have been in / I chose the wrong dish. My wife and I go out nearly every Wednesday evening and have done so since the reponening of the last lockdown. Needless to say we have been to many local pubs many times and realised that we hadn't given the French Horn a go. I had pushed to visit a few times as I liked the look of the menu especially the polish slant. Before I detail, I would just like to say that the staff were amazingly friendly. Two items were not on the menu, the soup and the butternut squash curry which limited my wife's choice dramatically. She had two starters as her main meal which she enjoyed but it was average at best. I had a prawn starter which was again nice but average and then out came the polish dumplings. Well I have no words. OK so I have never had polish dumplings before but have had dumplings via other cuisines and countries before. The dumpling itself tasted like uncooked pancake and the meat was just tasteless. It was all swimming in what seamed to be cooking oil, covered with very greasy and fatty pancetta and the pickles and other accompaniments frankly looked and tasted like they were out of a jar. I note an earlier review stating the same thoughts with a reply from the French Horn saying that everything was fresh. I assume this does not include these pickles etc.. I simply could not eat this meal. Anyway my gist is this. You go out to hopefully have a meal that would be on a par with other places, that you could probably not cook yourself either at all or as well as the place you chose to eat at and so on. Our meal cost £63.00 which included a bottle of wine and 2 pints. When we go out to other pub restaurants our bill is usually between £60.00 to £80.00. We recently ate at a Thai. The food there is awesome and often have to take a doggy bag home. Including wine and pints the meal cost £65.00. Again recently at another localish pub restaurant, the bill was £73.00 with the same alcohol content but we both chose specials that were a little more expensive than main menu stuff. The meal was off the charts good. I could rattle on about other pubs and their good points and as important is how consistently good they each time we visit but this isn't the reason really for my review. As a independent business owner I need to know how I am doing so any review good or bad is welcome and needed. I do hope that I just made a bad choice on the day and that the quality issue was a one off / me being crazy fussy. We will go back to the French Horn to give the benefit of the doubt and would be pleased to report back in a more positive way next time. Oh as I side note, I am not sure if the French Horn are planning on a litte refit as the restaurant area is really very dated. Many of the local pubs we are visiting have recently updated which I think is a must apres Covid to entice keep clients, attract new clients, increase recommendations and not to lose out on the competition. Watch this space.

Having recently moved to the local area we popped by to the pub for drinks a couple of weeks ago. Upon our initial visit we witnessed the roast dinners being brought out to other tables and had immediate food envy. We promised we would come back for our own Sunday roast. The selection of roast dinners was good with pork, chicken, veggie or beef, all served with cabbage, roast potatoes, massive Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese and honey roasted carrots and parsnips. We ordered a starter of the chilli garlic prawns to share and wished there were more as they were very nicely cooked - in hindsight just as well that we shared our starter as the mains were HUGE. I was really grateful that the staff were able to cater for my dietary requirements of strictly no gravy - TOP MARKS FROM ME! The roast was lovely and great value for money. The roasties were large, crispy and fluffy on the inside, the veg was tender and the beef was moist despite myself having no gravy. Cooked perfectly. The portions were huge which unfortunately meant no room for desert - we will have to try out the desert menu on our next visit. From what we could see from other tables these also looked nice. We reserved a spot and requested to sit in the outdoor marquee, we were very grateful for the heater being turned on. It made the alfresco dinning experience much more comfortable. I was particularly impressed with the service, perseverance and determination of the waiting staff in today’s very wet weather conditions. Whilst we were sat in the dry of the marque the poor staff members were getting awfully wet but still served us with a smile under their facemasks and in good spirits despite the adverse weather. It was also particularly busy, and the staff were very prompt in serving us. Nothing was too much trouble!

We went here on a cold Friday evening and the heater wasn’t working. We ordered crab cakes and the calamari. What can I say? A travesty! Crab cakes mushy with bright yellow sauce and as for the calamari, seriously, words fail me - constituted paste in a batter coating! Main course a very overcooked, dry burger and a tiny sea bass fillet with a sauce which again words cannot describe. On the plus side, the wine was nicely chilled and the young waiting staff were excellent. Feel very disappointed because this pub is local to us and we would love to be regulars. Will not be going here again!

Sorry to be negative but:I could not discern crab in the crab cakes either by appearance or taste, just very soft pureed potato. The accompanying saffron mayo was colourful but tasteless. The Polish sausage was certainly Polish but just one, not very large, for £13.25 seemed a bit steep - a second sausage is offered for £2 extra. Sauteed potatoes and onions were greasy and rather short of onions. Mustard mayo looked and tasted like the saffron mayo (see above). The red cabbage salad was really just garnish rather than a significant contributor to the dish.

My sons southern fried chicken he said was OK, this is unusual for him as its one of his favourites. My vegetarian burger was tasteless and burnt. Roll was hard. No salad with burgers either. Called into the French Horn last Friday on a busy, sunny evening. We asked if there was any chance that we could order some food. The garden tables were all fully pre-booked but they did manage to seat us in the restaurant area. Tables were well spaced and the young waitress was very pleasant and polite. Covid regs all in place and track and trace was the first thing we were asked to complete. Well done on that as we had had to ask for it in another Alton pub! There was quite a wait for the meal to be served but this is not a pub-grub place and food was all prepared fresh to order so that was to be expected. We had both ordered steak which was cooked to perfection. The pepper sauce was the only let down as it was quite runny and at £2 for a tiny pot it wasn't as expected. It did get changed but the second was not much better. Perhaps that is how they serve it? Hubby chose stilton sauce which was perfect. All in all the meal was very good. I even asked to alter some of the accompanying sides with it and that was no problem at all. Well done French Horn. We had a lovely meal in nice surroundings served to us very politely.Would we recommend? DefinitelyWould we return? Yes, if we are ever in that area again. Thank you to all at the French Horn for a very enjoyable dining experience

The clearly didn’t have enough staff on! management fault!! The young friendly staff were left to face customers and were laughing that they’d started well, on this evenings track and trace but had forgotten to continue! (Not good enough within a pandemic) The pub was a mess with tables not cleared. More importantly there wasn’t any hand soap in either male or female toilets! The staff were told but nearly 2hours later still nothing. We were really disappointed as they seriously seemed to have slipped on cleanliness. I hope they start to take things more seriously as this has always been a lovely pub but sadly very disappointed this evening.

Went in there for a soft drink after squash with a mate at the local sports centre, got charged £6.70 for two pints of tap lemonade - that's pint-of-beer prices! It's a shame, I live just round the corner and the food was always pricey but drinks (especially soft) were reasonable. Would not be surprised if two pints of beer cost £11 and up with what they charge for soft drinks.*This was six months ago*

Friendly staff, great food too and lovely atmosphere. Nicely spaced tables and clearly trying hard with current regulations. Will definitely visit again.

Delicious lunch last weekend. Some us tried the Polish specialities, and some went with traditional Sunday roast. Everyone was happy. The food was simple and very well done. Just what we wanted. Good Covid measures in place, and very helpful welcoming staff 😊

As a shielded house we're only sad we found out about this so late in to the lockdown. We had the Polish Sausage, Chilli Prawn Spaghetti and a kids cheeseburger and fries. It was hot, bang on time and very tasty. The staff both on the phone and in person delivering were very friendly too. Our only complaint, which is a sort of compliment, was portion size/content. Like Oliver, we wanted more. The sausage was so tasty but for c£11.00, and as the star of the dish, it was the size of a good breakfast sausage. I know, size isn't everything guys but think two would have been perfect. The prawn spaghetti was also just a tad lacking on quantity of prawns. Kids meal was spot on.Anyway, all in all, bloody lovely and would definitely recommend. I hope The French Horn continues to deliver as long as they can after they reopen as I fear I'll have to 'shield' for the rest of the year at the very least.Sunday roast next :) Well done x

Not usually takeaway people, but have always enjoyed dinner/lunch at the French Horn. Excellent food & always welcoming friendly owners & staff. The takeaway did not fail to impress, definitely up to their usual high standard.

Great "olde wolde" pub with modern cuisine & friendly staff.Throughout lockdown the Owners went above & beyond to serve the locals... All with speedy delivery with a distant friendly smile. Love the polish dumplings, Sunday roasts, stroganoff.... Still working our way through the menu. Try for yourself.... You won't be disappointed ☺

hannah was the perfect host. made us feel welcome the moment we walked through the door, even with a grumpy boxer dog in tow. food was top notch. had the sharer of bread, olives, salami, camembert, Parma ham and salad to start. mains were sausage and mash with onion gravy and my wife had a blue cheese burger (cooked medium well) and we both throughly enjoyed them. thank you for your hospitality, we will be back

Visiting on a Wednesday evening with senior family members, we were delighted to be welcomed warmly into this traditional Inn. It was busy enough to have an atmosphere but not crowded. The menu served traditional fare as well as some Polish specialities... some of which follow the Host's mother's recipes. Between us we chose, fish pie, vegan burger and Polish dumplings with trio of salads: each meal was of a high standard and was thoroughly enjoyed! The staff we met were friendly and helpful and we will certainly be returning!!

A little bit of Poland in Hampshire, we stayed over night in one of the chalets and ate twice - evening meal & breakfast. All the food was good and we found the service prompt and attentive. I had the scallops & the pirogues, which were delicious & filling. The Polish breakfast was also well presented and tasty. The room was small, but had everything we needed, it was clean, warm and quiet (which we were concerned about, seeing as it is basically in a pub car park). Would recommend and will stay again.

Had lunch with friends, 4 of us. Friends were on a special diet and not eating meat and I am a pescatarian. Menu had quite a few options for both of us which made a nice change. I had the chickpea and walnut burger, it was a little dry but I ate it all with some extra mayo and the sweet potato fries. Hubby had a burger and said it was fine. Friends had the perogi’s and said they were good. I usually rate a place in whether I would go back and yes I would to try some of the other options, maybe not have the burger again.

Went recently with a group of friends for dinner. The service was excellent, the waitress could not do enough to help us. The food was tasty and well priced - we had a main course and a dessert each. It was a shame the place was so quiet as the food was all really good and we all agreed we would come back again. My only feedback as someone who is disabled is - there is no disabled space but thankfully I was with a friend who dropped me at the door.Thank you for a great evening.

Stopped here for lunch on a very busy Saturday. Overall lunch was okay although disappointing that because it was the weekend there were no sandwiches on offer and alternatives were a bit limited. Loved the dead solitary daffodil dutifully placed on each table too!!

Very nice pub with an interesting menu, but slightly disappointing lunch. The service was great and the place was vet busy on a Sunday. For personal taste I’m not a fan of very thinly sliced roast lamb, or slightly thin gravy so the meal was a slight disappointment.
